a breathtakingly beautiful place to visit! right next door to Casa Loma, and free of charge. guided tours available, with very knowledgeable museum employees, who can answer every question about the house history and the family who owned it (Austins). Currently (December 2022) there is Dis/Mantle exhibit: cited below after the official museum website: Dis/Mantle, an art exhibit inspired by the efforts of Black abolitionists, reimagines Spadina Museum using an Afrofuturism narrative: where Mrs. Pipkin, the formerly enslaved freedom seeker who worked as a laundress in the house is now the homeowner and the house is a safe haven for those seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad. On view until December 31, the group show includes soundscapes, ceramics and visual art by Canadian artists from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. you can buy snacks, beverages and there is a lovely gift shop.

I've always heard of the Spadina Museum, but never had a chance to go until I stumbled upon it during Open Doors. Though I only had a small amount of time to explore, I did enjoy what it had to offer. It was nice to learn about local history and get a sense of what it was like to live in Toronto, during that time frame. I found the staff to be very friendly and quite knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions I had. I was quite impressed that they had a good chunk of the original decor from the Austin Family. The house is restored to the 1920s time period, which make it great for an morning, or early afternoon stroll. The gardens in the spring/summer is also great to check out.

So much fun getting the tour and asking a million questions. My tour guide was so great and I was entranced the whole walk. I am so glad I got to check it out. I am excited to come back. Our guide welcomed questions about everything even when it was just silly niche stuff, like about all the tile painters. The fireplace was lovely!!! But those aren't even my favourite tiles! My favourites are in the sunroom with all the plants, they are behind the door! They are stunning. Sadly I was so excited by them I didn't take photos. You will have to see for yourselves.

The guided tour is interesting. They have an exhibit going to reimagine the past. That did not make much sense to me personally. The point was to show that those who were servants could actually own the house. But it displays portraits of nba stars that make 100s of millions and bank executives. Whoever came up with an idea missed the point that if they actually owned the house they would still had to commit atrocities against Native Peoples to own it, and would have had servants of their own. So this exhibit makes no sense whatsoever. The tour is still interesting as it talks about the history and you can ask questions and original art.

This more modest yet still grand dwelling, placed in the shadow of the palatial Casa Loma, is a wonderful place to visit on a beautiful day when the gardens are in full bloom. The interior is also worth a visit, but there is a fee to enter. It is fun to see how people lived in the recent past, with the interior reflecting the era of the early 1900's. They seem to have some fun events periodically as well. The gardens are breathtaking (and free on the day we were there, although I think you can also pay for tours of the grounds) to wander around, with flowers and a vegetable garden. So beautiful! Great for photographers!

What a splendid trip back into time, and I didn't even need a Time Machine. Spadina House is everything you would imagine. A sacred period in time preserved & honored. The house is in magnificent shape. It's history rich and vibrant. The grounds of the house are breath-taking. A lovely place to just sit and enjoy the greenery and all of the smashing parties, you know that the owners threw back when. The tour guides are especially friendly and extremely knowledgeable. This one tour & museum I will going back over and over again. There is no way you can ever tire of this gorgeous place in our City.

Beautiful Museum. We actually had our wedding ceremony at the Museum. The sunroom is perfect for a small, intimate wedding. The exterior for wedding photos are just beautiful. However, due to the inclement weather we had (the random snowy week in November), we didn’t get a chance to take pictures outside. The events coordinator is truly amazing. She is prompt with response emails and listened to every concern we had. She also made it so we could take pictures inside. The event staff are professional, and very experienced! Our day went smoothly and we are absolutely in love with the pictures.

I was able to visit this place as a part of Doors Open Toronto. The house is fantastic - they've done a wonderful job maintaining the historical finishes inside - to match the photos that exist. There was staff in every room, explaining details about the house. They had a video playing in the basement that went into even more detail. The grounds are even more stunning. They had little games like they would have been playing in the 1800s. The trees were flowering(!!!), the gardens were perfect... It was breathtaking.

We went there during the Doors Open and there was an exhibition related to Black History and Underground Railway and all pictures and portraits that are a part of the regular exhibit, but not related to the topical exhibition were either covered or turned backwards. While the exhibition was interesting, it was not what we came for and was a major downer (there was nothing in the Doors Open brochures mentioning the exhibition!). We'll have to come again when the regular setup is available.

Next to one of Toronto’s primary tourist attractions, (Casa Loma) Spadina (pronounced “spa-DEE-na, not “spa -DIE-na” - Like the street - I know. Don’t ask. Toronto’s weird that way with names) House merits a lingering few minutes of your time if nothing else to wander the grounds and admire the house and the stunning trees and gardens- linger a while under the spreading locust and oak trees and think how utterly upper class this would have been in the 1860s. The Baldwin Steps will take you back down to reality and Dupont station.

  • Luiza Araujo

My favourite part about the Spadina Museum is the beautiful Spadina House garden. Open daily until 5pm- you can access the grounds around this house/museum for free! It’s a beautiful space nestled in one of the nicest areas of Toronto. It feels almost like a private park. In the summer they host outdoor events like themed fairs and yoga classes which are always a treat. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area or looking for a nice place for a picnic!

  • U L

Definitely worth visiting! This small historical place shows a bit of the past days from unusual perspective - it tells the story of a black woman who used to work for the owner of the house in 20th century. Each room and a piece of interior has a story to tell and you will definetely fill curious when the host start diving you in the history of this house.

Lovely museum that is totally worth a stop if you're planning on visiting Casa Loma. Not only is it a 2 minute walk from the main attraction next door, you even get a 25% discount if you show them the ticket to Casa Loma. Lovely home with extremely knowledgeable tour guides able to transport you to the era when this house was constructed. It's easy to tell the detail that went along with making a home so meticulously and with great finesse.

We took our mum here for mother's Day. We had a wonderful time learning about the house and history of the family. It's a gorgeous house wonderfully up kept and restored. Part of a bonus of coming here on mother's day was that they had a 1920s to 30s singer and piano artists, they were an amazing duo. Afterward we had delicious scones and tea! It was a wonderful event and I highly recommend you going next time they have one.

The guide for the August 31st 6PM tour (Tyber?) was wonderful!! We arrived 5-10mins before and the tour started with a short video. It was so interesting to learn about the Austin family and the ways that the different rooms and furniture were used. An incredibly informative and enjoyable tour for free! Would recommend. Thanks Tyber!

A must place to visit. David, who took on the house visit, explained so well that I felt that I was a part of that era... I came to know why the city was named Toronto, and before this, I didn't know the reason behind the name. It is a good place with a lot of mystery about Toronto. And on top of it, there is no fee.

Went to see Dis/Mantle - An afrofuturism exhibit that reimagines the house as if slavery hadn't existed and the owners of the home had been Black. Inspired by the efforts of Black abolitionists. The exhibit was amazing and very inspiring. Would recommend everyone check it out if they have the chance.

Open grounds to wander in and perfect for a summer stroll. Highly recommend since it is next to Casa Loma which can be pricey and packed to visit. This is a city run venue with a historical house and lots of area to wander or picnic in. There is a shop on site but it doesn’t carry a lot. We were able to set up a blanket on the grass and have a nice picnic lunch when we visited.

  • Maziar Mehrabi

The guided tour was very informative and the content was well presented. This place is full of well preserved history. I personally prefer places like this over e.g. Casa Loma. The shop has a lot of high quality souvenirs and NOT the common kitsch you find in other places. Oh, and make sure you try their homemade cookies on your way out (picture attached), it's only 2$.

  • Ingrid Y

It's a must see!!! Excellent!!! From now until December 2022 there are paintings by the artist Gordon Shanrach of Mrs. Pipkin and some of the Toronto Raptors. The museum is free ( donations are accepted) The staff at front desk are friendly and helpful. Guide Shan was amazing!!!

I had an incredible time at Spadina House today. The guided tour they offered free was truly wonderful. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly kind and willing to answer all of our questions. The neighborhood surrounding the house was also stunning. I'm already excited about the prospect of visiting again in the future.

I really liked this museum. Excellent preservation of the home with very knowledgeable guides to take you on a tour of each room. There’s also the beautiful, really well-maintained grounds where you can grab a drink, do some reading or just sit and soak in the peace and quiet. Highly recommend a visit, especially on a nice summer day.

A beautiful establishment and garden in close proximity to casa Loma. This place can get pretty busy during peak times but it's a wonderful location to learn some of Toronto's history or enjoy the serene gardens. Also an absolutely beautiful spot to take photos. For bigger shoots you will require a permit.

  • Gary Sharpe

A beautiful old house, so relevant to Toronto's history. Unfortunately they're painting over the true history of the family who lived here in the name of being inclusive. Very strange experience, indeed.

Beautiful house! Our guide, Tiber, was excellent, interspersing the tour script with anecdotes that made it more personal & memorable. Most of the historic house museums are restored to the 1800s, so it’s a nice change to visit one set in the early 20th century. More

We went to this museum on Doors Open Toronto 2019. The house is magnificent although visible signs of age (it's been here since 1866) are showing. There was a archeology dig in the basement, which is very cool.
