The Town Hall was built in the 1880s on the site of an old cemetery from local Sydney sandstone in the grand Victorian Second Empire style, and has been described as having "lavishly ornamented composition with focal tower and fanciful roofs". It remains the only non-religious city building from the era to retain its original function and interior. The building houses the Sydney City Council Chamber, reception rooms, the Centennial Hall and offices for the Lord Mayor and elected councillors. The Centennial Hall (main hall) contains Sydney Town Hall Grand Organ, the world's largest pipe organ with tubular pneumatic action, built from 1886 to 1889 and installed in 1890 by the English firm of William Hill & Son. This organ possesses one of only two full-length 64' organ stops in the world (the Contra-Trombone in the pedal). Before the opening of the Sydney Opera House and its Concert Hall, the Town Hall was Sydney's premier concert hall, and many notable performances took place there. Built between 1869 and 1889, it is one of Sydney's most elaborate buildings, a remarkable feat considering it was created by a succession of architects who strove to outdo each other with their own individual ideas of what the end result should be. The first was RJ Wilson who was replaced initially by Albert Bond when Wilson s design proved impractical. Bond completed the vestibule with its crystal chandelier, stained glass windows and ornate plaster work; the Bradridge brothers added the clock tower in 1884 and three other architects were employed to complete the Centennial Hall with its coffered zinc ceiling and mighty 8,500 pipe organ.
Sydney Town Hall is an absolute gem that deserves every bit of its five-star rating. Steeped in rich history and architectural grandeur, the building is a testament to the city's cultural heritage. The intricate design details and timeless elegance make it a captivating landmark. The interior of Sydney Town Hall is equally impressive, boasting spacious halls and stunning features that enhance the overall experience. Attending events in this iconic venue is always a pleasure, as the acoustics are superb, ensuring a delightful experience for concert-goers and event attendees alike. The staff at Sydney Town Hall consistently provide top-notch service, exuding professionalism and courtesy. Whether you're attending a formal event or a casual visit, the welcoming atmosphere and helpful assistance contribute to a positive and memorable experience. This iconic landmark stands as a symbol of Sydney's cultural richness and is a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. Sydney Town Hall remains a shining example of architectural brilliance and a hub for cultural events, earning its well-deserved five-star reputation.
Great Place and Great Ambience. Historic but well maintained. I like it at number one in Sydney Sightseeing. Sydney Town Hall, a magnificent sandstone edifice, has undergone extensive conservation efforts with the final phase commencing in 2020. The project's main focus is on refurbishing the building's facade, using local Sydney sandstone, and preserving the historic stained glass windows which included crafting intricate designs atop the clock tower columns and refurbishing old sandstone, involving the carving of new sandstone and adding seismic bracing for earthquake protection. The Town Hall's iconic clock acquired in 1884, has been fully restored, the grand organ, featuring nearly 9,000 pipes, underwent extensive refurbishment. In terms of sustainability, low-voltage LEDs, smart sensors for lighting control, and solar panels generating up to 48kW of power aim to reduce both energy consumption and water use ensuring a greener and more efficient Sydney Town Hall. Today I visited Town Hall on morning of Citizenship Ceremony and it looked magnificent
When we knew we would be in Sydney for a few days, the first thing to see was Town Hall. It has a world famous pipe organ (it has a 64' pipe that is only one in world). Unfortunately, they have limited access to the interior of the building, since it is a working building that is rented out for meetings and parties. But, we went to the building to inquire. The guard gave us a phone number to call. We spoke to the man in charge and he was very helpful. We went back the next day and told the guard that we only wanted to look at the organ. Even though they were setting up for a meeting in the room, we were able to see it. The guard that took us back also gave a brief tour of some other areas of the building. Very beautiful inside and such a history! They were very nice to us, since we weren't there at the ideal time!
Iconic Ancient Structure stands tall after 100 yrs. British architecture was very evident. Majestic lights, chandeliers inside the hall. Currently used for music concert shows. Place is strategically located and metro, tram, bus bays are walkable. Visit this and queen Victoria building which is adjacent to hall. If you walk towards right Hyde park n st marys cathedral will be there. Hence reach here and explore everything. Same way if you dont mind walking 2kms, you can walk on the opposite side to reach Opera house n rocks or take train to circular quay for opera
I received two complimentary oysters with lemon flavoured ice shavings. It was a nice touch. I had the wagyu steak. It was cooked nicely at medium, just the way I like it. The mushroom sauce was full of flavour. The chips was too much! I think should serve at most half of the bowl of chips that I was given. The place was very nicely decorated and very quiet. The steak took quite a long time to come out. I was told while I ordered, still it was longer than expected. Overall, very satisfied. I will definitely be back
Great place to have events. I don't believe the stone masons of the Illuminati had much to do bringing about this majestic building but the stone masons who did certainly did a great job. Events here are very obviously at a price range reflective of the status and location of this building but fun fact most protests on the weekends are normally held here so you get a 2 for one deal (event + protest) most times you come out to this venue.
Sydney Town hall is the second biggest town hall, after Brisbane, in Australia. Being completed in the 1880s. Sydney town steps are considered to be the most popular rendezvou meeting place in the CBD. Sydney Town was built on top of a cemetery. This wonderful building of government has many events held inside all year round. A must see, and great meeting place as you can't miss it, it's location is smack bang in the middle of our CBD.
We attended a City of Sydney Connect Occasion to support the forthcoming Yes Vote campaign to update our Constitution to grant a permanent right for indigenous Australians to have a "voice" **to** [my emphasis] the Australian Parlianent about issues that concern them. This is to right a historic wrong in our Constitution which clause was left out due to the colonialist mind-set of the founding drafters of the present Constitution.
I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful place in Sydney with my sister. The first impression was the church that stands elegantly. It was a beautiful sight to behold. The lights added to its beauty. One guy was playing a musical instrument around the corner. People doing their own stuff and I was just clicking pictures with my phone. I should have brought my dslr. Next time I will definitely click more pictures.
Sydney Town Hall has been a major landmark in the heart of the city for over 130 years. Renowned for its high Victorian interiors and rich decoration, Sydney Town Hall is the largest and most ornate late 19th century civic building in Australia. Conveniently located adjacent to Town Hall train and light rail stations as well as close bus and car parking options.
The largest and most ornate late 19th century civic building in Australia is renowned for its high Victorian interiors and rich decoration. Sydney Town Hall has been a major landmark in the heart of the city for over 130 years, with its steps possibly Sydney's best-used rendezvous point. Today it is a workplace, hireable venue and a seat of local government.
Gorgeous space with intricate details. Great for events as it has two levels of upholstered seating and many rooms around it. Easy access to stage with 2 wings and wide corridors between entry points. Large hall area at front. Short walk from train station, bus station, tram stop and many shops. Female and male bathrooms with large mirrors and many stalls.
A must visit location in the Sydney CBD, especially around festive seasons or special events (eg Vivid, Xmas etc). The front steps area is right in front of the light rail station, and is a popular meeting place for people. There’s a nice open square adjacent to the Town Hall as well. Look out for neon lights in the evening around Xmas and special events.
It’s located in the heart of Sydney. Town Hall is a popular event venue. There’s always an event happening almost every weekend. It’s close to numerous landmarks, train station, Queen Victoria Building is across the road. It has historical significance and the architecture is remarkable. Darling Harbour is a few minutes walk from here.
A wonderful place for a concert! The architecture is magnificent and beautifully kept up. Our only issue was the seating. The most uncomfortable seats after a takeout venue and not suitable for long periods of time. Otherwise it was a pleasure to spend time in one of the oldest and most important buildings in our country.
The city organist, Mr Robert Ampt, very kindly arranged for me to try the town hall organ, and even oriented me around the magnificent instrument and helped me to register the organ as I played various hymns and pieces. It was a truly amazing experience! I would make a trip to Sydney just for this again.
Went here for a gala ball.... Beautiful heritage, simple yet intricate details throughout make for the great piece of 19th century architecture that it is. Plus, although we didn't hear it, there is a large organ with fantastic pipes at the back of the main hall that I am sure would sound amazing too!
Sydney Town Hall is an exceptional venue where its architectural splendor serves as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural significance. The venue's central location makes it easily accessible for both locals and tourists alike. The place is undeniably a landmark worth exploring.
The function room below created a great space for public events, plenty of room for exhibitors, plenty of access for the public, and a great overall space. More impressive is the autitorium above for concerts and theatre. If you get the chance to see some of the halls history, dont miss out
One of the best features of the most beautiful city on the planet is the Victorian Architecture. Inside and out Town Hall has been an Icon for locals and tourist for over 200 years as it's literally central to everything in the CBD. p.s. Avoid driving, public transport is amazing in Sydney.
Went there to see the Body World Vital exhibition. A quiet and historical place. The exhibition is very educative even to the adults. But...a little bit creepy when you see the skeleton and muscle...you can hire a electronic guide for $5 extra to listen to more explanation of the items.
nice old building but its in middle of city. so its too much traffic you need to take care if you want to take some good photos. it was hard to take timelapse here for me because there is road work going on in front of it. other that its really nice architecture with good history.
Been here a couple times for concerts and shows and recently been here for my friends wedding. Absolutely stunning location for weddings so for all of your engaged people out there yes you can have a wedding at the Sydney town hall. Here's a pic of the food served that day.
One of the historical place of Sydney, and great architecture. During my first visit, I was confused if I was in a town or some UNESCO Herritage site. From any angle, you won't feel that you are in Town. Everything is just Awesome. And the water park is also so beautiful.
Such a beautiful building. The second concert we attended this year with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the air conditioning failed. This destroyed our true appreciation of the musical offerings. We love you Sydney Town Hall. You have to do better that this.....
This is nice and old architecture. The design of this building is really very good. In front of this building a small space is seen. You may find any street program there. Its just adjacent to the town hall station and the newly built light rail station.
Attended "The Good Old Days Concerts", absolutely fantastic. Having live musicians just makes music so good plus the artists, a fantastic day out. Do a google search and attend the next concert which is on the 24th Oct, "The Great Classics"
Attended Candlelit Orchestra - Best of Hans Zimmer at Sydney Town Hall. A wonderful night! The orchestra beautifully recreated Hans Zimmer's masterpieces. Sydney Town Hall sound system and the decor and candlelit ambience was just perfect.
Applied for my city of Sydney swimming pool confession card. $2 entry . Valid for one year 12 months consession .. took only minutes to process . The counter staff at town Hall were efficient friendly .. had had a great sense of humour. !
A grand, magnificent town hall. The perfect place to hold concerts or shows of any kind, the towering organs and luxurious interior design give the building an overall atmosphere of royalty. The acoustics are amazing, the enormous organ
My partner and I watched The performance “Best of Hans Zimmer”, performed by the Candlelight Orchestra. The performance was truly amazing, the artist playing have such an amazing talent, and the sound quality was amazing in the hall.
Architectural grandeur, amazing setup for music performances .. acoustics for vocals were mind blowing. Visited for choir and orchestra performance, perfect venue for kids to have their first performances and great exposure.
I have been living in sydney for 10 years, and funny that I had never been into the townhall building. I went in yesterday to enjoy the ultra violet party, and I was amazed by the interior. Such a great place for partying.
Beautiful and historic place in the center of the city. If you are a tourist looking for historic spots in the city, this is definitely one of them and you should take time out of your day to take some pictures.
A nice Town Hall building which is essentially the centre of the Sydney CBD. However it is lacking for real atmosphere both around it & inside and more should be done to make it open to the public and tourists.
Attended for a Candlelight Concert. The Town Hall was so beautiful all lit up with candles. The Attendants/Guide's help, and lift for Access was great. A gorgeous historic building with wonderful ambience.
It's a really nice place to go for a concert or any other gig for that matter. Beautiful building, nice acoustics and easy to get to. I was there for one of the Candlelight Concerts. A great experience.
Stepped out from the station, I was reminded with Melbourne (somehow) when i was visited, I saw an artist (singer) performance. This area also near with a good looking Cathedral, Woolworths and QVB.
Great costumer service ! Jill provided excellent costumer service every time we had a question or needed assistance. Jill was always there for us. For this reason, I recommend Sydney Hall. Angie T.
One of the best buildings in Sydney. Try and get inside to see the pipe organ, it is a one of a kind. It is a working building so you can't go everywhere but Security and staff are very helpfull.
This is where everyone meets when you are meeting a friend, going on a date, going to a protest. lve even been to a Church Service here which was awesome ❤ Always something going on 24/7 …
Went there as a guest for my niece's citizenship ceremony considering the volume of recipients the Town hall staff were brilliant everything went like clockwork well done everyone.
The service of Pakistan embassy Sydney is very smooth and helpful. Sir Junaid is very helpful and cooperative. We need people like him. Thank you team for the excellent service.
Normally, I only see the exterior of this fabulous building. Tonight I had a ticket to an audience with Sam Neill & Bryan Brown. The interior of the building is exquisite too!
A sandstone building in central Sydney, Australia. He lives opposite Queen Victoria House, near San Andre's Cathedral. The steps of the town hall are a popular meeting place
Located in the middle of the city. Next to China Town and Queen Victoria Building. There is light rail, train and bus station, which will connect you around the city
What a delight. So unique and special. The music was masterfully performed and the atmosphere created by the multiple candles was gorgeous. Can’t wait to see more !
Vibrant place to be, a mixture of colonial and modern architecture adds to the aesthetic of the Town hall area. Best stop for shoppers looking for premium brands
Watched the candlelight concerts here- such a beautiful venue and experience. Town hall staff were friendly and helpful too, and the seats were comfy and clean.
Great stage for band performances and the organ looks amazing! Lots of seating and areas to have a look at! Would highly recommend checking it out if you can!
Great iconic building in the center of the city. Very beautiful and contains lots of history. Try to visit here during Vivid festival for a good light show.
Fantastic venue, great stage, lighting and the acoustics were outstanding. The atmosphere was mesmerising. Will come here again for other exciting events.
First time experiencing the SSO here and the acoustics were great! Highly recommend looking at SSO’s catalogue for upcoming events to visit here.
I was there because of the biggest Australian singalong. The acoustics was great but what I really liked was the building and it's construction.
Spectacular architecture. Been there for the Sydney Writers Festival and was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. 10/10 would recommend.
Awesome place. You can seat on the bench in front of town hall and enjoy the view ❤ Townhall station is exactly in front of townhall building.
We had an excellent tour of Town Hall one morning. It was really cool to see the inside and all the coordinating of events that happens here.
Loved the architecture and historical view from inside.. seen lot of private events and marriage ceremonies happening here. Now I know why.
Illegal electrical motorcycles are a pest in this area and a safety issue. Be aware because if they hit you, they will try to run away.
Beautiful venue! Had no idea it was like this inside. Came here with the primary school Proms concert in September.
We thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The musicians were first class. The venue was fantastic. Highly recommended.
Was there on 6th Sept 23 for UFC 293 Open workout session. It is such a stunning and well designed architecture.
A great place to visit especially during Christmas, winter light, the projections on the building will be nice.
“The Good Old Days Concert “ We’ll organise, great performance and music, I recommend this event ❣️ …
Wonderful to hear the SSO in concert at the stunning Sydney Town Hall, after the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020
It's great to sit on the front stairs at night and listen to the street musicians in front of Woolworth!
Fabulous organ astonishing acoustics. Comfortable seating. Have been attending concerts here since 1957.
This place is awesome. The detail and design is just some best vibes. Give it a visit for yourself.
It has so much character in it. What a grand hall. The pipe organ is magnificent. Must experience!
