We arrived on Saturday night for our booking at 7pm. The restaurant was busy but most tables seemed to have either already ordered or were eating when we arrived. We placed our order about 7:30 once we had all arrived (10 in total including 3 young children). After around 45mins the waitress came up and asked if we would like dessert....The answer was definitely a no and we advised we hadn't even received our meals yet. She laughed and walked off. Here we were thinking she would surely go to the kitchen to see when our meals would be ready....That will be answered soon with a big fat NO.We are not ones to push for meals as we know when a restaurant is busy they do take a little longer and we were simply enjoying the company of friends. It got to 8:30pm when we noticed the heat lights go off in the kitchen and the staff cleaning up. It was then we asked at the bar when our meals would be ready. (3 starving children by this stage). The lady behind the bar quiet rude advised there was no meals placed for our table. YES you read right. They had not put our order through. The waitress that took our order was the same one that asked about dessert and served us drinks at the bar. Not at any time did she check on us or our meals. We were advised they were sorry and will make them with 30mins. This was not good enough. The waitress spoke with the manager and he then took off down the back to the office area. We waited another 10mins thinking someone would come to us and apologies or offer something. Well we were wrong. We had to call the manager down from his office and all he could say was " He was trying to get to the bottom of it". Not once did he think to come and tell us what he was doing or make a personal apology. He stood there with the biggest carefree look on his face. Forgetting a table of 10 people is just unheard of and just shows that the staff/management of The Black Horse are very incompetent at their jobs and running what was previously a successful pub. We will not be back and have advised others of our horrible experience.

We had a really good lunch in the bar on Sunday. Chicken Schnitzel and Calamari main meals. The service was excellent. The venue inside had a good new atmosphere. We were really disgusted with the lack of any maintenance of all the outdoor parking areas and the ‘green’ areas, especially the green area at the entrance along Bulla Road. The whole place looks derelict. The ‘green’ areas are neglected, very over-gown, littered with rubbish, broken glass and rubble. The concrete driveways and parking areas are very damaged in with rubble, rubbish, debris, bottles and cans left to pile up and rot. In an area of the car park, where there is meant to be a walkway to the Bulla Bus Stop, a very large drain lid has been dislodged due to substantial damage to the concrete. The drain and broken concrete have been in this state for more than a year and is a huge accident waiting to happen. Where we had to park, around the back on the side of the pub towards the skip bins, the grass looks waist high, rubbish and abandoned furniture is left everywhere. I have photos of all except the back area because I could not stomach seeing the filth anymore. Yes, the outside of the pub is old and run down, at least remove the rubbish and tidy up the overgrowth. Have some respect for the Bulla area, customers and your staff.

Not happy customers. We ordered coffees for our table. Only 1/2 were delivered until we went up to ask for the others. They were made. Just sitting there. The meals arrived. I had to put aside my coffee to eat my meal. A pulled pork hamburger. It was that soggy with the amount of sauce, it disintegrated the bun. I could not manage to eat it through all the mayonnaise sauce. I informed them I was not happy. The manager tried to tell me that's how they are made....uneatable and sloppy and that l should have come up straight away. I didn't realise until a few bites in when I lost my top bun through all the sogginess. She declined my $$ back It's a shame too. All the other meals were nice and It's a halfway point for me and my family to meet. I am disappointed by the service on behalf of the manager. 12 years I worked in hospitality. My managers never allowed a customer to leave without a resolution met.

I can’t rate the meals we had tonight. Shortest stay we have ever had at this place. Meals were bland, childs bolognese had no flavour and was served with no cheese. The entre of oysters kilpatric were tiny, watery and not fresh, I had to spit mine out as I refused to eat it. My partner’s steak could have come from coles and the garlic butter veggies that were the side had no garlic butter and were only broccoli and cauliflower with 1 piece of carrot and 1 of zucchini. My vegetarian lasagne was bland and looked like they heaped cheese on top and heated in the microwave - the salad was the best part but nothing special. All meals lacked seasoning. It was far from busy with only one third of the bistro seated. This was a favourite place to bring all the kids and have family functions. I would not waste my money on overpriced meals here again. The wait staff staff were friendly and apologised when we explained about the meals.

I’ve always liked this restaurant. It has recently come under new management. My recent experience there on mother day was appalling. Food prices were ridiculous and the meals were practically tasteless. McDonalds would have been a better option on Mother’s Day. The steaks were obviously frozen, they come out dry, bland and not even cooked correctly. $32 for piece of chicken breast on top of some lentils, $39 for a small piece of previously frozen porterhouse served with half a handful of mashed potatoes. Steak wasn’t seasoned at all. The salad with my meal was okay but that’s probably the only good thing. There special Mother’s Day menu had 6 items. There menu didn’t even contain a garlic bread and you couldn’t even order a side of chips with any meal. I’ve been going to this restaurant for well over 10 years and will never be coming back again. The experience I would consider insulting

Bring back the old Bulla pub. Went there a few weeks ago, booked and was never told there were no chips (otherwise I would have went elsewhere). Arrived and was told we need to have veggies with our meals.. ok great. We were told the kids still get chips. Pretty upset with the kids size meals. $14 for what is pictured! Never have I seen a kids meal at a restaurant so small for the the large price. Didn’t include a drink or dessert which you would expect at that price. My 2 boys (6 & 4) aren’t big eaters and both finished this and said they were still hungry. Would have been cheaper to get them a 6 nugget meal from hungry jacks which is where we went to get dessert after. Disappointed as a local, haven’t been there in ages and won’t be back. Worth travelling the extra to go to a decent pub.

I am a local bulla resident who has been here for over 10 years. I always supported this pub, I would go weekly for their Parma and steak night deals. I would support the pub with my dad every now and then. But I’ve had a few bad experiences with the new management. The staff are not friendly and have attitude. They were disrespectful and they took their precious time on purpose so that my partner and I would lose money at the TAB. Today, they refused my partner and I from utilising the TAB machine as we needed to buy a drink or meal to use it. I have never been so appalled. Also, just to throw in there, I used to buy my alcohol from the bottle shop, even though the prices are ridiculous, I will no longer be supporting any aspect of this restaurant.

Came here for mothers day and the food and service were both terrible. Only 6 mains on the menu and nothing to really choose from in the way of appetisers. Was told I wasn't able to add gravy to my steak by the waitress taking my order even though I seen another table all get gravy with the same meal. After seeing this, I asked a different waiter if it was possible to get some gravy. He said he would ask but never did. We then went to the service area and asked again still with no result. Finally, after a 3rd time of asking someone, I finally got my gravy. Finally it made a dry steak manageable to swallow. Will definitely not be returning.

The only thing I found wrong was I had a gift voucher for $140 & had to spend all on the night. It was only that I paid for my Daughters meals that I found out that was your policy. I still had roughly $30 left on it. As another in my party was still there so I paid hers & got some drinks to cover the full cost. I won't be getting a gift voucher from there again. If you want to you can send me a message via my phone. I can't fault anything else Thanks Nell

This was a frequent for me and the work girls over the past 6-7years. However my most recent dinner experience was quiet disappointing. Ordered the fish and chips which I’ve had a dozen times from here and was very disappointed at how over battered the fish came out. After pulling off the batter on one piece there was uncooked flour in a cut of the fish. Considering the price I was paying for the meal ($28) I couldn’t let it slide and asked for them to redo the fish and to use less batter. Meal came back as ordered, and offered a free drink for the unsatisfactory first plate. Sad to say we most likely will not revisit for dinner anytime soon.

We dined at the Black Horse mid week for lunch as part of a 90th Birthday celebration. The food was great and the service even better. The food arrived promptly and was reasonably priced. You could not get a more friendly vibe from the staff - they could not do enough for us, including singing happy birthday with us as they carried our cake over to our table. A great place!

We were here a few weeks ago and I still can’t get over how awful the food was, we had no idea they had changed owners and if we knew we wouldn’t of bothered driving 45 minutes each way . Menu has completely changed and way overpriced there entree garlic bread and bruschetta felt like it came from a frozen pizza box. They have tried to turn a small town pub menu into a semi fancy menu that does not suit the town or there clientele. If you want to be successful stick to your traditional pub meals and find a better chef.

I like this place but it can be hit and miss sometimes. The service is reasonable and the food tasty (good portions) but the menu doesn’t really change (which is great if you want the same thing but if you go a few times and you want to try something new you can feel limited in your options). I know they get super busy and I can overlook plates not being cleared, even when the wait person has empty hands!, but the thing that irks me is having to chase things up more than once. When it’s good, it’s great but it is a relaxed place so expect the service to be the same at times.

If you want to get a little bit out of town but not too far then this place is for you. Only about ten minutes past the airport and you come across the Black Horse Hotel in Bulla. It has a great relaxed atmosphere and the friendliest staff. A great playroom for the kids and a really great selection of food. The calamari was fresh and so soft. Also check out their website because we also went to their special valentines day high tea and that was amazing.

Sadly, once again the food was in edible. I did mention it to the waiter who passed on my disappointment to the manager (which I saw him do) and he didn’t even have the courtesy to come to see me. It was evident I didn’t eat my meal when I returned it. I was not offered a replacement. I don’t mind paying for good food, but this was no where near good. Sadly I won’t be returning for the food! Was passing by looking for somewhere to eat in the sun. The lady at the bar was delightful and mentioned we wouldn’t be disappointment with the food and boy was she correct! We ordered the Mediterranean delight (chicken skewers/cous cous) avo bruschetta and scotch fillet with mushroom gravy. This was the best pub meal I’ve ever had. My partner even said “you know when you leave a few chips after your meal.. that’s not happening today!” Extra crunchy thick cut chips. Great portion sizes. Very impressed.

We live in the outer Eastern suburbs and today we went to the Black Horse hotel at Bulla for an 80th birthday celebration. If the dine in menu is anywhere near as good as the finger food we had for lunch today, you are in for a real treat. All the food was delicious, plentiful, great variety and piping hot. Perfect. Staff were lovely, atmosphere great, plenty of room for us to mingle and great play room for the little ones. We will be back. Thank you.

Great pub food, was there Mother's Day and they managed to get all orders correct and out on the table at the same time. So kudos to the team there. Towards the end of the lunch as there were less people there the staff relaxed a little bit too much and I ended up taking unfinished plates to the counter. Apart from that a great lunch

Give it two stars as the food was ok and it is the only pub in town. The place needs a very good clean, carpark has bottles and rubbish everywhere. Ashtrays full and over flowing out the front. Used to be a great pub and hopefully it turns around soon but I doubt it.

Came as a family of 4 for lunch. Service was slow, paid 2 beers was given 1 and had to remind them, also paid for a tea which never arrived. No water offered. I asked staff if we could bring a miniature poodle inside, they said yes, so we came in, then another staff member advised we weren’t allowed, so we moved outside. No one came to check on us the entire time we were outside. Food was ok but wouldn’t visit again. Spent over 100. Takeaway containers $1 each.

I found it a bit overpriced for the food our table received. My partner had the chicken caesar salad, which he thought didn't taste right but didn't want to complain because it was our friends Xmas get together dinner. He ended up being sick. Besides that, the waitress was top notch friendly. Place is family friendly.

New ownership. Booked in to take advantage of their parma night but they no longer have it. Meals served in bar rather than bistro due to small number of reservations. We had a group of 8 and had cheesey garlic bread, parmas, pumpkin risotto, calamari, kids meals and the chili prawn linguine. Service was friendly and prompt and we all enjoyed our meals. One of the best prawn linguine dishes I've ever had! Will be going back!

  • Cassandra Sadler

The food was bland, portions were very small. I had peri peri chicken with sautéed mushroom and lentils... more like plate of cardboard pieces (lentils) with a side of dry chicken breast. The fact that that meal was 32 dollars is ridiculous. Came here for mother’s day and will not be returning. Should’ve chucked a frozen pizza in the oven and not bothered going out to celebrate mother’s day.

A local hangout, the facade is inviting, the bistro and bar are starting to date a bit. The menu was typical pub fare, minus bangers and mash. Meals, although a little delayed (couple of large groups were in too), were overall very nice. All staff i interacted with were friendly and very approachable - clearly liked their work and we're good at it. I would return again next time I'm passing.

  • Heather McLaughlin

Very disappointed. I rang and booked for lunch 2 days in advance. When we arrived we were told the bistro wasn't open and we would have to eat in the bar. Okay, we said. The menu was expensive for Bar food. Chicken Parmas $26.50 Each and you only got chips with it. If you wanted salad or veg it was additional $6.50. What a joke. Will not be back again. No seniors meals or real bar food.

  • Craig Jury

First impressions count! When you enter you are greeted by a wall of fake vegetation that looks cheep and a bar that is outdated. You can't help but to ask yourself is this a place I want to spend my money? The food was ok and the staff were inexperienced, but friendly. Sorely disappointed in this joint. The bigger girl with blonde hair who served my husband and I was extremely rude and carried the worst attitude. I brought it up to the management while she was RIGHT THERE (my mistake) and she lied to my face along with her boss’ face. Never let this girl do jury duty as she will just lie under oath. If god is willing he will fire her. Amen.

Revisited twice in last few months after a disastrous experience a number of years ago. Couldn’t find anything to grumble about. Meals were tasty and what you expect from decent pub grub. Staff were friendly and service was good. Was Saturday and they were reasonably busy. Prefer this currently over Gladstone Park Hotel or Westmeadows Tavern.

Excellent staff. Most of the food was good. The steak was cooked perfectly but one of the worst pieces of meat to ever grace a plate. So rubbery I had to send it back and swap it for a parma after two bites. I won’t bother with this place again which is a shame as there were some things of interest on the menu.
