Quick transaction, reasonable prices (at least for books by funny philosophers), good location. Wasn’t bothered at all while browsing - even when I was milling around like a drunk ant, because someone hogged my favorite section - which is nice; not very fond of shallow convos anyway, as much as the owner palpably. So, overall a lovely place serving English books of all kinds. One thing though, I don’t know why the shelf with all the half-priced books is placed directly in front of the checkout. On the off-chance that the owner yearns for the sweat of broke but voracious readers, desperately scouting one last cheap book before the month‘s over… please do read less Marquis de Sade and Bataille.

Fine book selection. Personally I'd like more hardbacks. And I wish the books were better organized on the shelves. Many of the books are actually having their STRUCTURE damaged by being poorly shelved. I realize that with stock levels fluctuating considerably in second hand stores it's difficult but just a few bookends in each section would help immensely when stock is lower than normal. Note that this does NOT seem to be a problem in the main fiction heart of the store!!! That said I found four great books and spent 40 euros so I feel I did my bit. Thanks for a great experience. Fix the shelving issue and it's 5 stars from me !!

The Munich Readery is a wonderful place for buying used books in English. They have a great variety and I find some unexpected book treasure every time! Don't expect €2 books just because they are “used”, though. They are cheaper than new but usually not anywhere near 50% cheaper. What's cool, however, is that you can return the books you bought at the Munich Readery and get store credit for them to buy new books. That's a fantastic deal, especially for fast readers, and is good for the environment, too. All in all, I love the munich readery and will come back, soon. :)

Large used bookstore selling all English titles. There is a small children's section in the front corner of the store with a large but dated collection of books and a few baby toys to keep wee ones entertained. I'm assuming inventory of newer books changes hands fast so best to pop in often to see what is on offer. The prices are a bit high for used books of OK quality but they do have a buy back program. Return a book you bought there and they will apply 50% of the cost to another book of your choice.

I don't know how many books I've bought here across the last five years, but they must be in the hundreds. Their selection is unrivaled and the owner John is always helpful and friendly. I love browsing their store or having a chat with the owner, oftentimes resulting in interesting recommendations of new books / authors. You can also order online and have books shipped to your home or pick them up from the store. This shop is a treasure and a small local business worth supporting!

We went in try to find a book called where’s Waldo. We first tried to find it by ourselves but in vain, so we approached the staff to ask. The staff of this evening was a white woman with short blonde hair. She was unnecessarily rude. After reading other reviews, apparently this is not the first time the staff here being rude. Amazon is a good platform for second hand books in any languages, and Amazon is cheaper! (And amazon definitely has a database where you can search)

Favorite place in Munich! Definitely suggest all my fellow bookworms to go there. It is a warm environment, where you're surrounded by books. It is super homey and relaxing. There is a section with books suggested by the owner, which is a super nice touch. In addition, they make the cutest tote bags, which you can get for a discounted price (or free!!) depending on hwo much money you spend there. The books are in good condition and the prices are quite reasonable. 10/10!!!

I discovered this bookshop by chance nine years ago. Since then I can’t live Munich without visiting it even if shortly! However, the best gift I can give myself is to enter the Munich Readery without time pressure, browsing through shelves, asking the owner John for the most impossible books (beware! He knows them all!!) and reading some pages on its very comfy armchairs. What’s not to like? I simply LOVE this place! And the bus 154 stops literally in front of it!

  • Nicoletta Galimberti

I like the place, you can find there a lot of second hand books, even of the last century, really well preserved and about all possible arguments. The owner knows what he is talking about, if you ask for an author or a subject he can suggest what's the best choice. The owner organizes events during the year for the customers, for children, for adults, for Christmas not Halloween. Great place if you want English books and You want to meet English speaking people.

When I first walked in I knew I could spend hours in this place. The shop itself is exactly the way a bookstore should be, with big windows and cozy reading chairs in hidden nooks. I found so many interesting books and even some I've been meaning to buy for ages. You can also get coffee and just curl up in a chair. Wonderful place to go if it's raining outside. I recommend this place to every book-lover in Munich and anyone who's visiting!

Munich Readery is everything that you look for in a book shop. Well stacked and organized book shelves, cozy reading space and a friendly book keeper. If you are a lover of stories I strongly recommend you attend the open readings conducted every month. It provides a space for sharing your creative work, Lisa is an outstanding host. Seriously, it is as good as it can get. If you are in Munich do check it out! Delete review

This a very nice second hand bookstore, with a wide variety of topics. The books are in good condition, although second hand, even children's books ;) Lisa, the owner holds enjoyable storytimes for children and diverse workshops for adults. Also if you are looking for a specific book you can call and ask about it. If they don't have the book, they will give you a good useful advice related to the book.

  • Tomislav Kuna

If you love books - go there. Simple as that. The selection of books is so comprehensive that I have yet to find a bookstore somewhere that can rival TMR. Prices are also very fair. And true bookworms know that a beat-up book has character. I always preferred second-hand books to new ones. Especially big hardcover editions. All in all my favorite place in Munich.

  • Philippe Bogdanoff

It’s a reader’s haven!!!! Lots and lots English language used books. All alphabetically categorized. Shelves and shells of treasure I was happy to come across such a place. Unfortunately, I was on my way to the appointment and couldn’t spare more time, but still, I just could not pass by such a place. If you are reading in English, this is a great place for you

  • John Friedmann

Yes, there still is a world where you can find more books than you can read in a lifetime in just one bookshop and it is not just the usual 20 bestsellers. And they are all in print. Best used bookshop in town! If you are looking for a great selection of literature in english this is the place! Enjoy and get lost in the world of oh so many great writers!

  • Sadhman Sadik

Yesterday I went to the Munich Readery on my friend's recommendation. It's a cosy place with lovely good conditioned second hand books. I totally loved the place. There was a dog, her name is Emma. She was there to greet me at the door. It was lovely. The lady owns the shop was very helpful. I liked her. I hope you find what you look for in the shop.

  • Antonis Maronikolakis

A beautiful little spot for bookworms! Offers a wide range of second-hand books, sorted neatly into either alphabetically or by genre. The shop itself is very visually pleasing, with twisting bookcase creating a maze you want to get lost in! And of, course, their selection is in English with fair prices. I very highly recommend this place!

  • Candice

The store is a generous slice of comfort pie! It feels especially welcoming in Munich where everything can be different and confusing to a non-native German speaker. You can choose a book from their extensive collection and even have the option of selling it back to them in the future if you'd like. I will definitely be going back soon :)

  • Alicia Lachaume-Richmond

Great selection of books, there's all kinds! But the prices are disappointing for second-hand books. The prices are almost the same as the original prices, one of the two books I bought was only 1 euro cheaper than the original price written on it. It's a shame, I would have been tempted to buy more if the prices were more reasonable.

  • Lilly Weeks

Lovely place, nice people. This bookstore is a wonderful place to go if you are looking for an English book. You can ask for book recommendations, drink a coffee and sit down in some big comfy chairs. Additionally they host interesting workshops, author readings, open readings and many other events! I enjoy being there everytime.

  • Chandana Goda

Its a Labyrinth of books. Possibly the only place in Munich you would get so many English books. Do not expect the new ones. As it says, it's a second hand shop. But it's s great place to find new authors. The people in the store are very helpful. A must go for every person who enjoys reading just for the Ambience

  • Katherine S

A lovely place to browse and find your next great read. Like a good librarian, or a book lover who knows his own books, if you ask John for a particular book he’ll likely walk you straight to it. If you love the tangible-ness of physical books? This is a dangerous place for your pocketbook. I highly recommend ☺️.

  • James Hamrick

Used to be one of my favorite places to go for books and events in Munich and appreciated the people who ran it. Don't know if it is under new management or just an incredibly unfriendly employee, but after my experience there this evening when asking about the credit/exchange policy, I will not be going back.

  • Lindsey Shackleton

We came for the children's books and were not disappointed. When you're an expat parent living in Germany with a bookworm for a daughter bookshops like this are a lifeline! We spent a while here looking and perusing and did not feel hurried. Good selection, although a bit pricey, well worth a visit …

  • Hari Govind

It’s a nice store with a good collection so five stars for that. The owner does however come across as rather rude and condescending. This might be a personal thing, or have something to do with which country you’re from, but it’s happened more than once to me so have to take a couple stars away for that.

  • Lara Bisio

I saw this library from the bus and i came back later that day to take a look. It is very well organized and the owner is very friendly. He speaks German too. Selection is pretty wide: music, classic, religion, teen age, kids, poem. There ist place to sip a cup of tea and a read a book: that´s amazing!

  • Peter Guy

This place is surprisingly full of books and in my two visits I left with armfuls of fiction for rainy days. It takes some time to wade through the shelves and discover a title you may be interested in, and the prices aren’t flea market low, but the staff is knowledgeable and the house dog a charmer.

  • Nima Pouya

If you like reading and prefer to do so in English, this is the perfect shop for you. It's a nice second-hand book store with a good collection of books, which satisfy a variety of tastes. The store itself has a nice vibe to it. You can sit there and read a bit as well while enjoying some beverages.

  • Polly Zubenko

My absolute favorite spot in Munich! I never leave empty-handed. You will most likely find what you are looking for or something equally great, whether it be a classic, a trendy bestseller, a graphic novel, or a rare first edition. When in doubt - don't hesitate to ask for advice! Happy book buying!

  • Max Heber

  • Uzair Mirza

Surprisingly to see such a gem for English book readers in Munich. The shop has a vast collection from all eras and genres. The owner was helpful. Pricing was just right considering you'll have a tough time procuring these books yourself in Germany. Would definitely go again! Highly recommended.

  • Delia & Johnny

Fantastic choice and selection, even for lesser known authors. The owner is exceptionally friendly and has recommended countless books based on my taste, without ever making me feel like I was being upsold. If you buy English books, please buy here and support a local, family-owned business.

  • Maitreyee Gupte

Highly recommend if you are looking for English books. The owner is real sweet and would have cool recommendations for you. If you are lucky enough you also get to meet their pet;) The place is clean, has a sofa to crash and read before buying yourself a copy which you probably will;)

  • Rida Sohaib

A labyrinth of beloved English books, a true treasure trove. Various nooks for sitting and reading for a while, even a small children's corner to busy the kids! Had all sorts of books and you could just spend an hour browsing through the titles! A must-visit for all booklovers

  • Luka Sachsse

  • Melody A Simon

I really like this cozy bookstore. They usually have what I’m looking for, and then some. Staff are friendly and helpful, and who doesn’t love the dog. I like the reading nooks. My only suggestion is to consider renaming the “chick lit” section - feels sexist and dated.

  • Ana Branco

Great selection of used books! The owner is extremely helpful and kind and will give you the best tips on which book to buy at any given time. Some of the books are in really good shape but I have also bought a pretty beat up one there - which was really cheap!

  • stephen benedetti

The Readery is an absolutely invaluable resource for English-speaking readers here in Munich. The selection is excellent, and the ambience is comfortable (the way it should be). My interactions with John Browner have always been both pleasant and professional.

  • Shouryadeep Singh

If you're looking to buy English books in Munich this is the only place to go. The owner is friendly and does his job to perfection. You can browse through the collection of books they have or ask the owner for a recommendation. Could not recommend this more!

  • B VAB

It’s a nice bookstore, a lot of titles , probably if the owner had a better character it would add to the charm of the place. Always nicer to buy a book in a bookstore but eventhough second hand, it’s not priced in that way. All in all a very nice bookstore

  • Mariella Ba

I can only recommend this book store. Everything is very organised and clean yet it feels like you can get lost in it. The service was very friendly as well and I’ve been there only once and came out with five new books. Can’t wait till the next time <3

  • Chaimaa Zegoumou

Felt like heaven going through all the sections and different genres. The bookshop owner is also very nice and helpful and told us some nice stories about a Japanese author I was interested in (Mishima). it’s the place to be if you love books …

  • Jessica Hawk

Beautiful and cozy bookstore with great selection of books in English - they are all in English! The selection of children’s books was far larger and more interesting than that at Hugendubel. Coffee drinks available so you can sip and browse.

  • Chloe

Lovely bookstore that I enjoyed exploring. The owner has carefully categorized the books which made it easy to quickly find books of interest. I would highly recommend this store to all English speakers who enjoy a good (used) book.

  • Lisa Binder

Great variety of books. Relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of cozy niches where you can sit down and read. It's not super cheap for a second hand shop, but I don't mind that so much considering how nice the overall experience is.

  • Alexandru Iosup

Nice layout, content, and people. They host a large selection of fiction, classics, and sci-fi. Found a well-preserved Nevil Shute, and started reading in their comfy chairs. Thanks, Munich Reader, I love your place.

  • Kissy Missy

The place is nice and cozy and offers a wide variety of books, but the prices are kinda crazy for second-hand books. I've bought 3 small books and it was like ~25 euros. You can actually buy new ones with that money

  • Beatriz de Toledo

Cosy secondhand bookshop with a wide variety of titles. Affordable novels and incredibly helpful service by the bookshop’s owner. If not interested in books, visit for the sake of the sweetest pup you’ll ever meet!

  • Phuong T.

Really cozy bookshop, where old or 2nd hand books can find a new owner! The cashier was also very kind and helpful towards me. They also sell some hot beverages while you read one of these books there!

The best English book store in Munich. Plus, you can get coffee there and drink it while browsing. Fair prices. Downside: I always buy more books than I can read. :)
