I had a very bad customer experience. I shopped there on 07/22 in the morning and there was only one elderly woman “helping” customers. She kept chasing me through out the store suggesting to “help” but actually supervising me. She asked very assertively that I do not mess up closes as it is a lot of work for her to put it back even though I did not touch anything at that point. I picked up two t-shorts and went to a check out. At the check out, I realized that I got the wrong size and asked for a smaller one and she made such a displeased face is if I was asking here to bring something from the other side of Chicago. When payed for these two t-shirts, she scrambled my check and through it into the bag with a demonstrative disdain. It was very unpleasant experience.
FYI: It's a Barnes and Noble, that sells Starbucks coffee, so they won't accept Starbucks gift cards. The good: It's two floors full of books (and what a great selection!) records, apparel, school supplies, etc. with plenty of areas to sit and space to browse. Friendly staff, but they don't bother patrons who are browsing. Also, there's a cafe where they sell Starbucks coffee and pastries, plus a convenience store-like shop that has everything you need. The bad: My only complaint is the location of the bathroom, which is on the second floor, but can only be reached from the first floor of the store via a secluded staircase behind an EXIT door (or elevator) that leads to a dark enclosed hallway. I never feel quite safe if I'm there alone.
I purchased a lot of mulch which required and requested assistance due to my back injury. The sales clerk directed me where to bring my truck for loading and assistance in the storage yard. I waited over 20 minutes with no help. I watched another truck load, wait and leave frustrated without help. I walked back to the store and complained. A young employee, who was a working college student, told me he was just informed of my need for assistance and apologized for the delay I had experienced. He was very helpful and courteous - I wish him well in his future endeavors within the field of psychology.
It’s really small. Although it has two floors, I couldn’t find stuff I wanted (e.g., Mac adapter, simple poster cards, etc) that I could usually find in bookstores of other universities. Btw, the Starbucks on the same floor also always run out of items pretty quickly. I went there at around noon time with different friends and each time the first two to three items we asked for ran out (e.g., cold brew). Not sure if they just get less food and drinks during pandemic season.
The bookstore is nicely laid out, is in good working order, is clean and neat, has lots of good university themed gear and is well located. The staff was friendly and helpful. It is everything a good university bookstore is supposed to be. Ok, if you want to get picky, the art designs could be more creative, but they work and are restricted by decades of tradition. Just run with it.
You can buy backpacks , hats, hoodies, tees, sweatpants, water bottles, books, sketchbooks. Shop assistants are very friendly, they are usually the students of uchicago so u can even ask them about the uni . They will give you an advice and wish u good luck w yr application. The only problem is international SamsungPay doesn't work there, don't forget the physical card with you.
I visited during Family Weekend. The stock in the store is relatively light as the majority of the purchase period is over (textbook). Relatively clean, and I did found an item that I would purchase (U Chicago Fountain Pen). Item sold, especially apparel, are slightly on the higher side. My wife indicate that the fabric may be of lower quality.
It's at a very good location, which is why I end up going there more often than I'd like to. The cafe has a lot of options and there's seating & plenty of sunlight, but other than that it's not a very pretty place to be in. The Bookstore itself is okay, but it lacks the cozy atmosphere I like seeing in bookstores.
I would give 0 stars if I could! Extremely unhappy with the cafe!! They should seriously outsource the cafe and let someone else take care of it. They are always out of stuff, they got my drink wrong 5 times in a row. The quality has gone down like crazy. Their staff/students are extremely rude.
I'm Japanese. I visited to buy it to commemorate my study abroad. As the name of the store suggests, many items named after the University of Chicago are on display. However, some products were not properly inspected and had scratches. In other words, I think the Japanese inspection was polite.
Every time I go here, the “starbucks” or coffee shop portion is always out of things. It’s been like this for weeks. Sometimes its over more than one week at a time. The employees are often very rude as well. Some should not work in customer service jobs. I honestly think it should be closed.
We took a long walk on UofC campus today and made a quick stop at the bookstore. It was warm, cozy and smelling like fresh coffee, tea and baked goodies. Any excuse will do....we needed to "sample" the cookies and hot choc to make sure they were "OK" for everyone else....:)
Twice when making online apparel orders the items were out of stock. Also was told to go to the cashier upstairs when returning a rented book, after having read a sign at the counter that said to return rentals downstairs! Clearly poorly managed. Definitely a buy!
While this is a great place to get University of Chicago merchandise (in store or online) and some required textbooks are available here, there are better bookstore options in Hyde Park. As expected from a chain bookstore, it has a rather uniform, corporate feel.
A great selection of University of Chicago apparel and keepsakes in addition to a regular Barnes & Noble bookstore. There is a good selection school supplies as well. The attached coffee shop/convenience store make this a good stop on a visit to the University.
Stopped in for some gear while in town moving my daughter in for grad school. Giving 3 stars because they have a nice selection of apparel. However, some of the prices are astronomical. $80 for a crew neck sweatshirt. Yes it had nice stitching, but wow!!
Has a Starbucks inside. Run by the university so similar to a Barnes and Noble cafe. Cannot pay with the Starbucks app or redeem rewards. For Starbucks app there is another corporate run Starbucks in the CCD building. Great quick service here tho.
The quality of the selection is just atrocious. If you go visit bookstores at other top universities, you find thoughtfully curated arrays of the best books published in recent years. At this store, you find an entire display case of Twilight.
Just recently came here. Starbucks staff is astronomically rude. I asked for some ice earlier, the barista rudely told me to put the cups down, proceeded to pour the ice in, and angrily threw the cup. I always ask for water and I’m always
This bookstore is useless. I have tried to purchase the same book since April. I have returned 3 separate times and every single time an employee takes down my information, then says we will call you when it arrives and never does. It is
Pretty nice "bookstore". Lanyards are disappointing. Remarkably few"U of Chi Mom"/"U of Chi Dad" items. The nicest "little old lady" manning the register when I was shopping. Just the selection of merchandise was kind of, "meh".
The things here are very expensive and the quality of the products is not high. However, if you really want UChicago written clothes or school things you can buy from here, otherwise it will be waste of your money to shop here.
Fairly good selection. They had a dizzying selection of water bottles, which was what I was looking for. But some other things in there are ridiculous, a single subject notebook with a hundred pages costs like $8.
I was there on a college visit with my daughter. We stopped at the bookstore and purchased a UC sweatshirt with the coupon we received. Love a discount!! The ladies who rung me up were very friendly and helpful!
Sometimes it's the people who are truly wonderful instead of the merchandise. The cashier we had was so lovely and fun! So was the cashier at the coffee bar. I'd definitely recommend stopping here!
Nice selection of books and college spirit wear. Not only textbooks but books of general interests. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Lots of great items for UChicgo students, families and alum.
Amazing Admissions staff, accommodations were made for my group at the very last moment. The campus tour was excellent and thorough. Great place to visit and even better place to study.
Did prices on hoodies go up and I didn't know. Capitalism is tryna make its money up on its citizens everywhere and its ludicrous. No fault of your own U of C Bookstore! junebugnem.com
After Christmas they have a great, small clearance section. The cafe had a good selection. U C clothes are super expensive but that's to be expected. Nice general book selection.
This is where all my beer money ended up. If you attend the UofC, you will become a frequent visitor. Visitors: walk around the gorgeous campus—> you have your BN back home!
A great place to get coffee, snacks, quick lunch, and university merchandise. My favorite is the grad lounge on the fourth floor (only grad students allowed)
Wow. I bought my sweatshirt here and it keeps me warm from the cold temperatures in Chicago. this bookstore is AMAZING and very large!!!!!! Regards
Tried to buy a sweatshirt for my daughter due to sudden drop temperature and very windy on May 27. Don't have that much smaller size available
Good coffee and wide selection of snacks, sandwiches and treats... Plenty of logo "U of C" merchandise as well Stop in if you're passing bye
The store had an amazing ambiance and the bathroom is very clean. The staff is friendly and they have books on every topic and genre.
The coffee shop in the bookstore gets 5/5 for being the only place open on Memorial Day. Coffee ok, place ok, burn it’s open!
Love my Starbucks Crew! As a UofC employee I like coming here - it reminds me of my graduate school days and mindless banter
Thank you for cheap cap of University of Chicago! I wear this cap so much these days. And there is variable kind of books.
If you bleed Maroon, this shop is a must visit. A full collection of UChicago items. Hurry before "fun goes to die." Love
Bathroom is at second floor, through a door at the back of the convenience section. Wide selection of UChicago items.
Great place to browse and purchase the attire and books you want. And you can relax at the Starbucks located inside.
Cashier at the Starbucks was high strung and rude af. Felt bad for the poor barista working with him. Disappointed.
Beautiful campus and I bought this amazing bag! A little pricey as all college bookstores are. Starbucks attached.
Very nice place. It has a lot of items that keep the students from having to go off campus, which is a good thing.
The Starbucks guy is super rude. Also, I ordered a Mocha but there wasn't any chocolate in it! Disappointed!
I bought a cute sweatshirt here and I literally wear it all the time cause UChicago is my dream school
Starbucks had very few drink options and the outdoor seating didn't have wifi in range.
Not sure what was happening last week but this is what the person served me on campus.
my good friend bought a sweatshirt here and it turns out that he really likes it
We drove all the way out and checked the hrs beforehand, and it was closed.
The Starbucks coffee was good. The mens room needs a deep cleaning.
Good space to work or get books
Nice and clean store
