My issue is with a security guard at the 4th street location named Bowman (Not even the manager knew his last name), who physically assaults people freely and without consequence or repercussion (myself included). He blocked my entry, claiming I could not enter the store because it was closed. Since I only needed ONE item and I had arrived several minutes BEFORE the 9pm closing time, I didn't think there was gonna be a problem. I didn't argue with the guard about not being allowed in the store, saying I would gladly leave, but could he please stop behaving so aggressively towards me. He responded with an even more hostile tone and reached out for the arm of my wheelchair as if he were going to grab it, At this point, I asked to speak with a manager. He denied my request, accused me of being a thief, and demanded that I leave. I repeated my request to see a manager and he responded by GRABBING MY WHEELCHAIR and DRAGGING IT OUT THE DOOR, breaking the foot rest completely off in the process. I was terribly traumatized by this event; and what's worse is I can't shop there anymore because this guy STILL WORKS THERE! He continues to abuse his position of authority by PHYSICALLY ASSAULTING anyone he chooses, the most recent incident occurred just YESTERDAY (another female). I used to love this store but now I get a bad taste in my mouth every time I hear the words "Trader Joe's". What a shame ☹️

I absolutely love Trader Joe's in downtown San Francisco! The store has an amazing selection of healthy foods that are always fresh and of the highest quality. It's so convenient to shop here, especially if you live in San Francisco, as the store is located in a very accessible location. The aisles are always well-stocked, and I can always find what I need without any trouble. But what really sets this Trader Joe's apart from others is the friendliness of the workers. They are always willing to help and answer any questions I may have, and they make me feel welcome every time I walk through the doors. Their customer service is top-notch, and it's evident that they truly care about their customers. It's such a pleasure to shop here because of the positive atmosphere created by the employees. Overall, I highly recommend this location! The selection of healthy foods is fantastic, and the convenience of the location makes it easy to stop by whenever I need to restock my pantry. But what really stands out is the exceptional customer service provided by the friendly and welcoming workers. I always leave with a smile on my face and a full cart of delicious, healthy groceries.

My wife and my 4 year baby wants to go to restrooms, we ask the cashier that help us his name is L, Robert, He told us to ask the manager that are in the computers, we went there as ask, Stephan for help with the restroom as my baby needs to go and my wife, He told us no their restrooms are close but they still keep receiving customers, we also as an associate Alvin and he told us that the restroom don't work, but when my wife told him about what the cashier told us he told us is manager discretion they are the one that has the key. At the end my 4 years baby did in her pants as she don't use diaper, and we have walk with her like that and she was cool, as paying customer we shoul be able to use the restroom, this action from this employees really make this to take my business somewhere is be aware if you go there and want to use for you or your baby restroom are not for customer. Only those that manager like. And the 1 start is cuz I can't give this employees 0 starts and the training the management give to this employees.

Well, my fellow Americans, if you find yourself in the City by the Bay, I must direct you to Trader Joe's on 4th Ave in San Francisco. Ah, you'll walk through those doors and think you've discovered the supermarket equivalent of the American Dream! The staff—why, they're friendlier than a small-town parade. They guide you through the aisles as if you were an explorer, setting forth on your own Manifest Destiny of organic produce and artisan cheeses. The prices? They're so reasonable, even a fiscal conservative like me can't complain. And let's talk about their snacks—oh my, you'll feel like you've won the Cold War against hunger itself! I particularly enjoyed their "Everything but the Bagel" seasoning; it's like diplomacy in a jar—effective, versatile, and a crowd-pleaser. So take it from the Gipper: Trader Joe's on 4th Ave is a national treasure. Five stars, without a doubt. God bless you, and God bless Trader Joe's.

I just love Trader Joe's in San Francisco! The staff is always so friendly and helpful, and the store always seems to be stocked with a great selection of fresh, high-quality products at great prices. I love stocking up on my favorite pantry items, as well as trying some of their unique specialty items. The store is also conveniently located in my neighborhood. With top-notch customer service and a great range of products, I'm always happy to shop at Trader Joe's! Trader Joe's vegan cookies are the best in the world! For a surprisingly affordable price, you can get a taste of delicious, rich, chewy heaven. They're great to satisfy any sweet craving, especially when you don't want to compromise on ingredients. Highly recommend trying some out!

Love to shop at this TJ location. More fresh & selection of flowers. So surprised to see lovely peonies there in decent price. Bigger than other TJ locations in SF with more check out lanes. Supplies always well stock in this location. Their chicken masala brand is so tasty & good bank for the buck. $4.99 & fill your stomach for lunch. Bought the new item: coconut red curry chicken. $.50 more than chicken masala without rice. Will see how it tastes. Hopefully delicious as the other one. Another favorite thing I always buy here is Free-range chicken. I have been shopping chickens here since I found out they carry free-range chicken. Their quality is unbeatable.

Good store, but was with my kids and heard some wailing upstairs. Security guard slowly wandered up as I took the elevator. At the top there was a late 20s or so woman who was on her knees with her bag contents slightly spilled out on the ground in the entryway. The guard was standing next to her not really making eye contact. She said "they attacked me- call the police" and the security guard just said "why don't you just use your phone?" She seemed distraught and started for her phone. Another person came over to argue with the guard. I had the 2 kids so I left, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

This location is usually very crowded in the evening, good thing all cashiers are super fast and friendly! Good variety of products and always clean and organized. Paper, recyclable plastic, and reusable shopping bags are available. Super convenient location at Powell BART station. They sell a delicious tangerine fresh squeezed juice! Update: Well, this store is now crowded with homeless and other people that think the store is a free buffet. There was a person on Tuesday night walking around the store eating prosciutto and having a drink, and when done with the meal, just walked out of the store.

  • Evette Williams

I like this store been coming here since it first opened but recently the security guards are a bit much, very profiled and harassing and unprofessional shouldn’t be working protecting citizens. I was accosted for no reason definitely grounds for harassment. The only reason this store has business is because of the tourist definitely not the locals they conveniently get harassed and chased out. Bad behavior on the part of these security guards. If there is someone that needs to be handled there’s a manner in which it should be approached and definitely not in the manner in which I’ve witnessed..

For any conference goers or workers, this location is a godsend. Close to the bart, reasonably priced, and with a lot of pre-made food, this location saved me from doing fast food/canned food while working down at Moscone West. Checkout was fast and friendly, quickly getting me out in under 10 min during the end of day rush. They also had silverware available at the end of the line, which helped because I was dead tired after a 13-hour shift and forgot salads required forks to eat. Seriously, if you are in town for an event, save some dough, don't eat out and go to Trader Joe's.

This is a good option if you’re trying to save money. Prices are significantly less than Walgreens or eating out. If you’re on travel , staying in a hotel, and trying to make money off of your per diem, then go shopping here as soon as you arrive. Don’t let yourself get so hungry that you binge and give into the dining out trap. Never shop for food or dine out when you’re getting hangry. Good selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Love love love the cocoa dusted truffles though. Several boxes are going home with me for the family.

Do the well dressed folks peddling Bible lessons on Market and 4th street not realize that Nirvana is just beneath their feet; while Trader Joe is subterranean, it is spacious, stocking basics at good prices; it’s style is plain, without airs or pretenses: what you see is what you get; their staff is gold standard for great service! My favorite items : olive oil, guacamole, spicy cheese , Pinot by Poppy. When you climb back upstairs to street level, there is a glow of neon light upon you; people will bow and pray to you.

  • Amberly

It was my only second time at a traders joes and I asked for a gentleman to help show me where things were and he was very polite and well mannered the prices were great and gave a suggestion of chips to buy as I left I told him I was on a 15 and if I could just come back later on my break and he said oh I can just help u real quick so u can get back to work and I just thing for a second visit at this store I had a great experience and was treated well I highly recommend shopping at Trader Joe’s and great prices too!!!!!

  • Aja Lawson

Great staff that's always super helpful and willing to go above and beyond to find information and products. Great example: I eat salmon nearly every day and I am obsessed with their BBQ cut, skin on, Norwegian salmon, which is often out in the refrigerated section if you go later in the day as this is a very busy location. On multiple occasions I've asked if someone could see if there was any in the back and have always had a staff member eager to check for me for this and other items as well. Love this TJ's!

  • Naz jawwad

My love for traders joe's is ever ending. I used to go this place for Lactose free Milk, they have one of the best lactose free milk but after pandemic trader joes is my one stop for my Indoor plants, yes you read it right "Plants". Trader joes get lovely variety of plants almost every month in very reasonable rates. I got my Monstera, Alocasia, Rubber Plant, Succulents, Venus Fly Trap & Pilia. Now I purchase gluten free stuff from them, they have a wide variety of gluten free food. Worth every dollar.

  • Muhammad U-Khalid

Great store, nice salad bar , wraps, fruits, vegetables , breads, cakes, frozen foods yummy, low cost and nice taste , milk , eggs , juices, drinks , dry fruits , oils , spices , olive chips , chocolates , coffee, frozen fish n shrimp and many more , ice cream, meat , different varieties of cheese, protein bar , etc..... Today 05/21/19 I visit and saw many new things but my hearts was targeted beet crackers and aloe Vera juice because of health try it ( I already tried beet crackers it is nice )

  • Bonnie Brennan-Moore

I've always been impressed with the pleasant and genuinely helpful employees at this busy store. My last trip was the best,as I was waiting for the clerk to total my purchase,I asked him to not bother scanning a small bouquet of flowers as my total was more than I had. He said the flowers were on him this time, and my surprised smile was enough in return. Wow! So sweet! Made my day,and as I'm not sure it's appropriate to mention his name here, I will surely never forget it!

  • Quinn Calhoun

All of the employees here are so happy…what are they taking that makes them so happy? I want whatever they’re on. Anyways the staff are super friendly, approachable and know their products well and where to find these products. Cheap, affordable, across the street from Ross (Cross) Dress For Less, technically underground. It’s a good size, however, lacking in wine and other beverages. Besides whole paycheck, it’s my favorite affordable grocery store.

  • Bradley Russo

I feel good giving em five stars, TJ's is my rock! All of the employees I've encountered there have been helpful and usually outright friendly! As a vegan on a shoestring budget, I'm grateful for your kind customer service/management staff. Too many times I have carelessly bought items that looked so good, only to find there's something in it I don't eat. They always let me turn it in, partially used, (ugh!) for store credit. \( ̄▽ ̄)/

  • Yamina Roland

It's great that there's a #TraderJoes so close to a Bart station! Unexpected trip but so desperately needed to get my hummus fix! Harry G, my cashier, was the absolute best! Great smile, great chitchat, fellow hummus addict & packed my bags evenly so that I didn't hurt myself walking home. Exactly the kind of WOW experience Trader Joe's wants to give customers each and every time. Mission accomplished!

  • philip lindsay

A sweet little Trader Joe's in downtown San Francisco. Entrance is street level and the store is subterranean, accessible via escalator. Set up intuitively, the store pulls you through it with ease. Often very busy, check out will seem daunting as the line goes up and down several aisles before you get to cash registers. Fear not! The line moves quickly and I have never waited more than 5 minutes to pay.

  • Bob Morris

We went crazy shopping here. Living on the Big Island of Hawaii and in Cabo San Lucas makes us hunger for Trader Joe's. We spent a fair amount of money buying pate, creamy cheeses, baguette, frozen dinners and many other fun eating items. What a treat shopping. So, back in our hotel room with enjoyed a bottle of champagne with the pate, creamy cheese, sliced meat and baguette. Not so bad after all!

  • Frisbee Girl

A great mini Joe's in the city and right next to Cole's for easy access to last minute needs. It continues to be an awesome resource in that area of downtown. Professional guards handle shoplifters swiftly and discretely, making the store feel safe. Thank you!! The lines look long but move very quickly. There's always something weird and fun to find and try out and the staff is super friendly.

  • Jenny Adamthwaite

A great Trader Joe’s, but most of them are. The staff were so friendly and helpful. My only feedback is that they could have better organized the line. It’s a small store but the way people were lined up allowed a lot of aisles to be blocked unnecessarily and people were easily able to cut the line which, in a queue that long, felt frustrating. Otherwise, a great experience!

  • James Deperalta

Can't say nothing bad about Trader Joe's! Yeah the line can get unruly here but that's really more on us shoppers not being efficient enough. Still check out moves quickly. I like the options here, they have everything I need. The flow is good and the service is great. What more do you need from a grocer? With my local whole foods shutting down this is my go-to.

  • Robin Tauber

This location is pretty handy, not far from Powell Station. I find it handy when I've been downtown and need to bring home some groceries. I don't know how anyone could buy heavy or large items... Or really fill up on groceries because basically, you're gonna be carrying everything. If I need to get more than just a handful of items, I go to a different TJs

  • LJ Andres

I felt welcome and secure within Trader Joe’s. Easy to get to and an escalator ride down to the market. I didn’t find all my goods but it was well worth the shopping expedition for the items I needed~ variety of cheeses, cereal/granola, fruit juices and a good choline of fresh veges and fruits.

  • Aaron Phillips

Standard Trader Joe's experience, in the basement of the building. Prices are fair for being in downtown San Francisco and not artificially raised just for location. We actually only stopped here for a cooler bag and they had a great option for less than $10. Convenient and staff are friendly.

  • Ushma Kriplani

TJ's is TJ's, amirite? Still randomly occurring supply chain issues apparently, that started in the pandemic. But nonetheless a staple of our lives. This store is well organized though compact, has friendly and professional staff, and even some parking, i believe, though I've never used it.

  • T T

Underground supermarket was huge with lot of variety of Fresh produce, groceries/ plants/flowers/ alcohol to choose from. Long queue To pay but it’s moving constantly. Lots of Xmas stuffs to buy. The customer service counter guy was very friendly and answered my queries on some products.

  • Michael Horton

Always a good experience. Good is very good, I shared a table with friendly people. 4 strangers at a table, in a short time, we were talking like old friends. It's a SF ICON that must be experienced at least once. That's enough to Get you hooked on a SF ICON. Good food & Lots of it.

  • Allan Cartwright

Reasonable prices. Amazing staff. Let's talk food, there limited edition fs tangerine juice is my guilty pleasure. U get hit with sweet. Then sour comes in and packs a punch. Quick jabs from tangy and zesty. It's a knock out. Absolutely delicious! Thank u for having this.

  • sergio martinez

I love this place because it's close to the market and on the way to my house. I can't stand that they dont sell individual beers like other trader joes because of some law about doing so on Market Street. Long lines after work, but staff is quick and line goes by quicks

  • Tahseena Kahn

This store is underground. I was shocked when I learned Trader Joe's was open there. I wondered how they found the space so big. Then I saw how creative they were and used the basement. Now every time I go there, the line is 3 isles long. Still they have good service!

  • John Emmett Patterson

The last grocery store in a ten block radius from home and one of my favorite places to get fresh flowers within budget and always great savings. The checkouts are fast and last grab selections are thoughtful. They hire happy emoyeez here. Keep up the great work.

  • Fritz Hinterberger

It’s been more than 6 months now that the bathrooms are closed. So - just hold it, okay… Update - it must be hard to find a plumber these days. This store is a money maker, always a line at the registers, so I wonder what keeps them from fixing the bathrooms???

  • Rajaa Muhammad

Only in California, I had to show my receipt at this location and was asked why I was returning the products. I've been to many other Trader Joe's throughout the US with no questions asked or give a reason. But they were very nice and good customer service.

  • Jennifer Pederson

It was quite busy with a long line waiting for a cashier to open up but it went by quickly. That's the thing about Trader Joe's they are very customer service oriented & of course the line moved smoothly. I bought a New York steak - it was delicious!

  • Hal

1st impressions aren't great. And easy quick fix: dust and vacuum around the escalator. The rest of the store seemed like a typical Trader Joe's. I just wonder how a manager can walk into work and not see anything wrong. What else is being ignored?

  • Roland Sf

I’m very disappointed when I shop there. I put my food in Trader Joe's wrap after paying, the cashier was very very rude & impolite to me he screamed at me and once I had paid he put all my groceries and my food on the floor. His face was

  • Micah Blumberg

I shop here all the time. There are usually good deals, and chill people. Trader Joes generally has a very relaxed atmosphere, its always clean, and Security isn't stressing anyone out. Can't say the same for the nearby Safeway.

  • Edgar Friendly

Ran into kid (like 20 something) rotating the pre-made salads. Very knowledgeable about TJ policy of food donations and was DOING HIS JOB. Line moved fairly quickly for a busy Thursday night. Always impressed when I'm at TJ

  • Mark Pengelski

Great items. Great prices. Great location....adding to this in 2023 that the snaking checkout lines go so fast due to the awesome cashier staffing. Thank you TJ for great people instead of Safeway or Ikea self checkouts!

  • Johan Kim

Its Trader Joe's. Although if you look like a theif the security will basically follow you around. I had 3 following me in different sections of the store which made me super uncomfortable. But hey its downtown San Fran

  • Samuel Cuadra

Great Trader Joe's. Lines are super long, especially in the afternoon after work, but they have a lot of cashiers so the line moves pretty quickly. Love their products; prices and quality of their items are great!

  • Frank

Love this location in downtown San Francisco. Lots of selection and always busy. Long lines at checkout but they always have plenty of cashiers so the line moves rapidly. Staff is always helpful and friendly.

  • Darryl S

Really nice store, with a lot of heathy options and selection. The layout and roomy and airy and it’s easy to navigate. The lady at my checkout was really friendly and helpful and it was greatly appreciated!

  • Mary Rose

Convenient location, but it's just like other Trader Joe's. This Joe's does not have the same stock as bigger ones. There were a few items I couldn't find, but had seen at my local Joe's in the East Bay.

  • Natasha G

We were in San Francisco and found it so expensive for food, luckily we found this Trader Joe's and managed to stock up on breakfast items, snacks....and great wine! All at a good price point

  • Steve Dunthorne

This area of Market is struggling a bit recently, so it's great to see Trader Joe's sticking with it. Great selection of 'stuff you need' at great prices. And served with a genuine smile.

  • Theo Chargualaf

Great location in the heart of Union Square shopping area right next to everything. Super efficient check out lanes. Staff was very helpful. Vegan chocolate chip cookies are excellent.

  • Leslie G Mallo Jr

I love Trader Joe's. They have everything you need. Their house brands are fabulous. Someone knows good food. 12/11 Just as tasty of a selection as before. Just keeps getting better

  • Suzette Watson

The have a coffee bar to purchase and a sample bar. You can also purchase machines, cups of any kind and coffee or they can ship it to you. It was nice to see in the city the "N"

  • Bryon and Carter Killilea

Besides your I'm a bomb shelter or underground cave.... staff is nice, and their lines seem to wrap from aisle to aisle. They do a great job at getting you out in no time at all.

  • Heather

The line is always huge, but it never takes long to get through it. Surprisingly goes pretty quickly for having so many people in it. Their cashier's are good at what they do!

  • Sena Guzel

As we know San Francisco is expensive. (sometimes is insane) If you want to save some money, buy groceries in affordable prices and good quality, here is the perfect place!!!

  • Matt Owen

This place is crazy busy but the checkout runs crazy fast to keep up with the crowds. Like every TJs the food is top notch and the staff are super friendly and helpful.

  • Dion Robertson

Saw a lady go crazy and started smashing things up. The security guard was polite to here but seems she had done it before. Shopping with a free show, would recommend.

  • Raleigh Swick

Usually crazy busy, line snakes up and down the isles when it’s rush hour after 5pm. But super convenient location, and friendly staff. Guard keeps out homeless.

  • Taylor Hoyt

No line should ever wrap around 3 aisles in the store in addition to the normal line space. This location needs to increase their staffing. Absolutely insane.

  • Chris Jackson

A little smaller than most Trader Joe's I visit around the country so slightly fewer choices. Staff move customers through the cash line very efficiently.

  • Hugo S

A good experience, always. My only criticism is that their fruit isn't at Costco standards. Though, once at SSF Costco, their own standards were trash.

  • Christopher Lloyd

Love Trader Joe’s! Great food. Nutritious, delicious food. Good prices. Friendly staff. Love Trader Joe’s. Oh, and convenient downtown location. A+

  • Goldie Bahamas

Solid! Well run store; usually kept well stocked! What I like best is, even at this very busy location, the check out system is highly efficient.

  • Victor Brunko

Over the years they still stuck with lots of sugary brands. No progress unfortunately. Also they keep focusing on low-fat too. Which is obsolete.

  • Paula K

Every once in a while I head into a trader Joe's. I like that you can use the restroom here also. Unique items at fair prices for the most part.

  • devenra tamata

Best store and very clean, organic food, fresh and well arranged. They have many billing counter so you don’t have to wait in queue. I lov

  • Joe Dimont

For an inner city Tjs this one does a good job at managing the chaos.would be nice if the cashiers were more focused on the customer tho.

  • Bukky

My first time in any Trader Joe's. First impression: 1. Lots of varieties except for raw rice 2. The staffs are helpful and nice

  • Steven Bortoli

Absolutely loved shopping at Trader Joe's during my travels to San Francisco. Amazing selection of products and great prices too.

  • Marty Foster

Considering what's going on outside it's pretty cool. 17 cents for water! Be aware of your surroundings and bargains will be had.

  • George Greene

Very good quality store items.(And fresh too!!.) Huge diversity of what the store has for shoppers to choose from & purchase!!.
