Dec, 2016. I wish I could give Underground Atlanta a better review. I live within easy walking distance. It has great name recognition and is within a few blocks of a number of major Atlanta attractions. It's also adjacent to the intersection of MARTA's two lines What is Underground? In the 1800's the area was on a level street grid with the railroads that built Atlanta running through it. Over time sections of street were elevated over the tracks and the streets on the lower level were abandoned. What had been the first floor of building essentially became the basement and the area was vacant. As a result there was an "Upper Alabama St" with a "Lower Alabama St" running under it. "Lower Alabama" eventually became Underground's main concourse and the original storefronts from the 1800's became the new shops. In the mall's first iteration, from the late 1960's through about 1980, it was primarily a nightclub destination. Atlanta had more lax alcohol laws than the surrounding area so it was the regions premier nightlife destination. As laws changed people stopped coming and it shut down in the early 1980's. It was redeveloped as a "festival marketplace" / mall and reopened about 1989. It had a variety of souvenir stores along with mainline stores like the Gap, Champs and Sam Goody. With Rich's and Kessler's Department stores and the World of Coke nearby, it initially did well. Unfortunately the department stores and the original World of Coke closed and it's no longer anyplace I would take my family or in-laws when they visit from the Upper Midwest. Nor is it anywhere I would recommend single women or children visit alone or anyone visit at night. I don't know that it's actually unsafe, but it absolutely has the feeling of a place where petty crime could occur. Particularly on the section of Peachtree that runs beside it. If you've ever exited customs in a third world airport it has that element of "watch your luggage " to it - particularly outside What's left today is mostly on the Lower Alabama St side - the "Underground" area. It's a collection of athletic shoe and urban wear shops, with a few jewelry and tourist stores thrown in. It's probably 60% occupied. There is also a large, mostly vacant food court with "Chinese" restaurants selling deep fried chicken bits covered in goo, a mostly vacant "Upper Alabama Street" area (the above ground and outside stores) and an entertainment street that is empty with one notable exception: "The Masquerade" - a notable live music venue - has moved in on a temporary basis after it lost its longtime home to condos. Although it has been years since it was a genuine tourist attraction (its irreversible decline began when the World of Coke moved to Centennial Park and Underground lost its last anchor), when I first moved downtown it served the purpose of a legitimate urban shopping center with shops for the less affluent. However, in the last few years many of those have closed. It was probably as a result of a pending redevelopment and a desire to keep the spaces vacant for whatever comes next. And that's likely the future of the complex. A developer from SC is expected to close on a deal to buy Underground in Jan, 2017 which will include adjacent parking and the cross streets within the complex. A couple blocks of Alabama and Pryor street were recently"abandoned" by the City so they can be added to the package. That gives the next project about four city blocks of private land to play with, and combined with a related developer who has acquired most of the adjacent properties along Peachtree St, it seems the area is likely to gentrify. The project is expected to include a grocery store, student housing, apartments, and possibly even retail. That makes Underground's future as a tourist attraction seem unlikely. The latest proposal I've seen has even included removing Upper Alabama St and exposing the lower lever to daylight again. Time will tell, but Underground's days in it's current layout seem numbered. I hope.
Don't visit Here. It is no longer a Thriving place to Visit, Eat, or Shop. 99% of the Retail Stores, Souvenir Stores, Food Court, Bars, and Clubs are GONE/CLOSED. UNDERGROUND ATLANTA is now a Ghost Town. This used to be an amazing place to Eat, Shop, and more. Now, all the stores that were located down inside Underground Atlanta are CLOSED. Down inside Underground Atlanta only 2 business are open. One is a very small space where Punk Rock or Heavy Metal bands perform (standing room ONLY). It looks like a scene from the Movie Blade ♂️ . I like the Movie Blade, but not in real life. The other business is a equally weird looking place. I didn't even bother to go inside there. My instincts told me don't go inside. The Bathrooms that were located near the Escalotor/Elevator/Stairs was open but pitch black inside and gutted. I wouldn't recommend going in there either. You'll never been seen again. I had to use the bathroom really bad. So, someone pointed out another set of restrooms a lil further in. I went in there at my own risk. Very UNCLEAN. It was more nasty and potentially dangerous than any Subway/Train Station Bathroom in New York or Chicago. They also have the majority of Underground Atlanta (down below) Fenced/Sealed Off. The entrance that once gave everyone direct access to MARTA Five points Station is also Closed/Fenced/Sealed off. Outside was once very clean and beautiful. NOT ANY MORE. The Water which used to cascade around the sides of the Underground Atlanta sign is permanently turned Off including the Fountains below. The water is now full of Green Mold, Rust, and waste. Atlanta's Homeless (God watch over them) are all around Underground Atlanta. There used to be alot of Students, Business Men and Women, Regular Passersby, Working Class Men and Women, Families, Tourists, Stores, and more Topside (Upper Level). Those Business are GONE too. A few business are located on the street level. But, if things dont improve soon, they might have to Close and relocate. Now, if you're from the streets, and you've got your head on the Swivel, you can spot multiple Hand-2-Hand Drug transactions. This place is NOT SAFE at ALL. DO NOT GO HERE. DO NOT BRING CHILDREN HERE. Atlanta Police DO NOT patrol this area. If you visit Underground Atlanta, it will be at YOUR OWN RISK.

Haven't been downtown underground 5 points area in a decade. Looks great as far as ascetic improvements. What surprised and sort of made me uneasy was the number of disenfranchize men and women saturating every area. Like literally hundreds of seeming homeless, mentally challenged ppl all compiled around Georia State, the Underground area, MLK area... asking for money, sleeping on sidewalks, or circled fellowshipping. I also saw two different groups passing out food and toiletries, which gave me hope. Sadly, much of the packaging from the donations became trash thrown onto the landscape.... empty lunch bags, drink bottles just discarded on the ground when a garbage can was less than a few feet away. I realize life is tough for many right now; me included. I also realize that homelessness nor pandering equates to delinquency or criminality. Yet, and I questioned myself about this even as my antenna went up several times when I was approached, hollered at complimentary, I felt unsafe. I felt unable to feast on the beauty of the hard work the city has undertaken to make our downtown 2nd to none because of the need to watch my back. I recognize that those fears were not due to a real present danger but background indoctrination. That doesn't change that my internal instincts said, "Be on guard." I left from downtown feeling very sad for the ppl both who slept on cement, begged for food, walked around talking to invisible faces AND Atlantians and tourist who in order to experience our city, have to navigate through a maze of underserved souls, some of whom see them as an avenue to resources to survive the day. Again, the enhancements and renovations were impressive. There is so much to do, see in the downtown area. Do so, please....with antennas up!

Dear Google, UNDERGROUND is closed for renovation. At least that’s the story, I have not seen any workers. Concerning the fact that Five point station is - regarding where you come from - you spot to drop off or change line, it is a disaster. First I thought: is this the new downtown Detroit? Is this the setting for Mad Max 6? Or is it simply how Olympic cities look after the whole magic and fireworks are over, as in Athens or - for other reason - in Sarajevo? What makes it even worse is the complete in existence of any official information. Underground was the first thing I saw in Atlanta after dropping off my luggage at my not causing more enthusiasm hotel. I was really depressed after that introduction to town. But luckily there were a few shops open. Pity some sales person (working in a gift shop) preferred yelling into the phone for a quarter of an hour and let me stand besides or - even worse, a sneaker store that could have made tripple the sales with me easily but after some effort at the beginning none of the girls felt in charge nor did they listen or be aware that Tourist might might have some difficulties especially towards the South. Also a almost complete absence of a coffee or food store makes it a sad desert in the middle of town.
I had to dig up my google password so I could log in just to write this review. I have never in my entire 30 years of life felt as unsafe as I did at Underground Atlanta. There are DOZENS of homeless, mentally ill men walking the streets around this venue, and they are extremely aggressive and intimidating. The event sponsors did nothing to ensure there was sufficient space between the secured event space and where these men had access, making it damn near impossible to walk to our car without being harassed. Literally not 30 SECONDS after escaping one vagabond did we run into another and experience the cycle of harassment all over again. It felt like every single predator slithered out of the Atlanta gutters to congregate in this ONE PLACE. I hate to even have to say this, but DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE AS A WOMAN—EVEN AS A GROUP—without male accompaniment. It is extremely unsafe and downright terrifying. Please be safe, ladies!!!
I honestly can’t tell if this place is supposed to be open or not. It’s in total disrepair and almost entirely abandoned, and yet this place has an active Website and folks continue to post reviews online that suggest something that is still active and vibrant. A small number of people still mill about as well. A few of the attached business are open even if the vast majority are gone or closed. There was even a bathroom attendant who was very excited to direct me to his clean restroom, even though I wasn’t looking for it. I felt I was living in an episode of FX’s Atlanta. If you want to see something that will make you feel like you’re living during an apocalypse, this is it.

Nice place to go to and learn about the history. They have very unique brick sculptures and signs so that you can read the history. However when we were outside looking at the different attractions a security guard told us we weren't allowed outside, nor were we allowed to "loiter" around the train attraction that was there. It was disappointing that we were forced to leave as the kids were learning about the underground railroad. The mall it self is beautiful. Brick all around, and full of rich history. We loved learning. We went on a Wednesday at 1p when there was supposed to multiple vendors with samples, there was nothibg. Most the stores and restaurants were not even open. I wouldn't go for shoppibg, but it is amazing to see and learn the history, if they don't tell you to leave.
Honestly, I just love the nostalgia of Underground Atlanta. Took a nice walk with my man through the area. They have a parking garage very close. So that’s great! You can get some alright food in the area for what I have experienced so far, like “Chinese Breeze”. It was okay. But not too many places to eat due to the Underground Atlanta shopping center and things closed. I did see “Hookah Hose” which I still haven’t tried yet but heard a lot of great things from people. So I’m ampd to try it! So to the photographers and videographers, great area for a few shots. ️

You can see glimmers of this place when it was in its heyday in the design and architecture, but it’s clear that it’s now past its time. I really like the concept of an underground mall and have been to many around the world, especially Asian countries, where businesses are boomin’ around the clock (shops in the daytime, bars in the nighttime) but this was unfortunately the tail end of what was once clearly a city hotspot. The main problem are the homeless - there are just far too many both around and in the area itself, at all times of the day, and for that reason I cannot recommend this place.

I’ve been here a few times, but this Halloween event is by far the most fun I’ve had here. Underground Atlanta offers a unique environment different from anywhere else I’ve been in the city. You’re literally under the city streets! This event had a live DJ and the tickets were free! Every event I go to at this location always seems to be cheap and very inclusive with loads of side quest to keep you occupied. If you haven’t visited, I highly recommend and if you’ve been before consider bringing your friends!

Says it opens at 11 am but it was not open. I spoke to the custodian and he said they didn't open until 6 pm He also said there were no shops, restaurants, etc there anymore. Only art displays. I parked in the lot across the street. Don't think about taking the stairs. They were dark, trashed and as soon as you opened the door, the smell of urine hits you!! Nasty. Elevators weren't working, and the area around it smelled of urine. Don't waste your time.

I went here for the First Friday art event here. It was cool. They had nice exhibits, but I didn't expect the turnout it had. The line was super long for the people who had RSVP (Free ticket) ahead of time, so it took them over 30-45 mins to get in. I was not waiting in that line. So, I paid for the $25 fast line ticket. The drinks were OK but they didn't have a wide variety. I would suggest a better selection and more food for the occasion.

It's not the same at all and it's very disappointing. It was sad to go there after not living in Atlanta for several years and to see that it no longer has the vibe and atmosphere that it once had when there were stores and vendors. It used to be such a great and big tourist attraction with lots of places to get souvenirs, take pictures, shop the boutiques, and eat in the food court / restaurants. None of this is there anymore. I hope the city does something about it soon because it was such a big staple for Atlanta in the community.
This place was certainly interesting... maybe it's because this part of the city felt rather unsafe to a tourist, maybe it's because it was starting to get dark out, but looking down the non-functional escalators and elevator it looked like something post- apocalyptic. There were stores and a few eateries downstairs, but the whole place just had a weird vibe. Maybe it's better in it summer. Maybe it's less weird when everything is open.

Cool concept and experience for events and such. I went to the Underground for my first time to check out the first Friday Arts exhibit. I enjoyed it. However, I give 3 stars because it’s way too hot down there which kinda dampens the experience for me, personally. It would be nice to create some air flow. No one wants to get cute, go to an event and sweat to death. That’s my 2 cents.

Now days, you go to Underground for the clubs. It is no longer the Underground days of old with the small shops and local eateries it used to be. With that being said, it is working hard to revamp and become something awesome again. The locations that are open are always a great time. (4 stars as a large part of me misses what it was and can't seem to let that go. There is nothing wrong with what's there today).

I went to the 50 Years of Atlanta Hip Hop Exhibit! It was a really good homage to ATL music royalty! I loved seeing the old equipment the producers used to produce some of our greatest hip hop hits!! The picture wall was amazing! We went in kind of early, and I got the impression it is still in its infancy. However, the staff were really nice and I met Dallas Austin!!

Underground Atlanta in 2023 is pretty cool. The A/C system needs work you will get hot.. and the fountains aren't on often.. but the artist studios are very interesting because they have rotating shows and events. First friday at Underground is my favorite. Free entry, make sure to check their site and RSVP if any special event is happening.

Went to a show there and should be better signage for anything other than Masquerade and the comedy club. La Maison Rouge was amazing!!! Went to the Fever Pirates and Rum Experience and the actors were terrific and the drinks were on point! We also went across the walkway to an amazing art installation and bought several pieces.

Before you attend an event here, look up who is hosting. Unfortunately, I find that some event managers are cold and very unprofessional. I would say that 1st Fridays are usually a great time! But the holiday events seem to be a bit trashy. This past Halloween weekend was pretty bad, lots of trap music which is whack because why would I wanna listen to that when trying to dance? So yeah double check event management before going!
Probably is way more fun and interesting when everything is up and running. The majority of the shops and businesses are closed I'm assuming do to Covid reasons. All in all right now during these times it's pretty dead with nothing going on at Underground Atlanta. Still gave it 5 stars because I'm sure if it wasn't during the Covid era that it would be much more to do as well as all or almost all of the businesses would be open.
Apart from the night life setting, I didn't see anything for a non night life person like me. The stars I have given are just because of the security and the nice security personnel I had met during day that told me about the underground Atlanta(.Though I didn't see some of the stuff he mentioned eg "the former slave auction place"

So, from my understanding after speaking to a security guard for the Underground Atlanta. It is more of a weekend event type thing. (Friday-Sunday, and Tuesday). There are no events on Mon, Wed, and Thurs. It is completely dead. Even though Google list it as open, it is not open on those days. Refer to the Underground ATL website for accurate information for when to visit this spot.

A lot of build up but nothing really to see. In the hour we were there we were accosted by three people behind for money, had an officer tell us there was a stabbing in the restroom, and quite literally tried to sweat to death because of the lack of circulating air. And as far as the shops go, there was almost nothing to see. At least half the store fronts were closed. Seriously, look at my photos!
The underground shopping is currently no more. We did get good deals on the streets but had to maneuver around the homeless. The homeless situation is very bad and it’s hard on shop owners. I’m sure it run away customers. The new owner needs to breath some new life in it. I’m not sure if art events only will do it. The homeless situation needs cleaning up. Is Atlanta doing anything?
After reading the other reviews I'm pretty confident we didn't just go at a bad time but it's always like this. If there is anything actually open here anymore it appears to be a far cry from what it once was and definitely NOT a tourist attraction

Went to the Masqurade for One Ok Rock concert and it was great!! The security is really tight with patdowns and checks of the contents of your pockets and bags. They're really strict so I wasn't worried about incidents inside the venue. The masquerade is intimate for a live house and the service at the bar was great!! I'll definitely go back and recommend it to all my friends
I went during the day, which I am sure would have been a different experience than in the evening. There was trash blowing around, ho.eless people sleeping and wondering about. It doesn't feel safe or particularly well maintained. I can't imagine a scenario where I would return here, which is sad because it obviously has enormous potential.

We were very disappointed when we arrived, the place is a ghost town and most shops are closed, the whole place felt so sad and even a little uncomfortable to be in just because of the unfriendly characters hanging around. I'm actually glad I had my boyfriend with me to protect me. If you're exploring Atlanta and not from here like me, skip this attraction.
Went here a few minutes ago — a lot of the stores are just closed and on the underground part there was nothing. There are only homeless people around and I wish I read the comments before going here. It is a wasted trip like another person said.

This place was so cool and beautiful, BUT it was super sketch. One of the locals even warned us that it was not safe. The idea of the Underground is awesome, but the crime makes tourists feel unsafe. I suggest visiting in the daytime because then it isn't too bad. The bathrooms were also gross and smelled like marijuana and booze.

Every thing is closing, but a homeless man told me they were going to make this place high rise apartments. He also said security and police bother them on a daily basis. He said he had been coming out there every day for 50 years with no problems, but now they can't even sit down without some type of harassment.
Fun night spot now!! Love the masquerade, and daiquiriville. Recently have seen a lot of improvements and work on the property. Tried the dancing crepe restaurant at the Underground they had the amazing lamb chops. For dessert there was an ice-cream place next door which sells roll-up ice creams. Amazing flavors.

I recommend only if going to a specific event such as the Banksy exhibit. It was a perfect location for street art exhibits. Expect to be approached by panhandlers and you may see some of Atlanta's homeless population asleep. This is just something that has been common in this area for years.
This place has charm, it's like an underground shopping mall. you can find food, knick knacks or just wander aimlessly people watching. I agree when various stores are closed it's a little daunting like walking around NYC subway stations but it's a must see in the heart of Atlanta.
Rip off club, they charge 50 dollars per person, let a couple of hundred people pay and then only let 50 people inside. Just pure scam, don’t buy any tickets online

On the top and also near Marta station , we shoot DMZ for HBO. Good and special good memories because it was one of the three productions I was doing before pandemic started and change everything!!! This was one of the first scenes we did before quarantine. …
If you want to visit the nostalgia, that's fine. The amount of homelessness around the building is depressing. The Underground isn't what I expected. Feels like a small strip mall that died.

We got there and were the ONLY people there. Everything was closed. Literally everything! It looked abandoned and scared my 9 year old. I went on a day it was supposed to be open. Really strange, and homeless people seem to congregate there. Super disappointed.

I went to Underground Atlanta for the Banksy exhibit. It was a great atmosphere. It was a very chill environment where everyone was checking the art out. The flow of things was nice and the staff was very helpful with any questions that we had.
The Banksy Exhibit was amazing! The location was perfect for his pieces! I would encourage everyone to visit while it's available. This artist is like a real life "El Barto". He puts his money where his mouth is, and I respect him …

A man there "Uncle Peanut" drew portraits of myself and my children. He's amazing and does amazing work. Well worth the wait. He's homeless, but he's a great guy. I love him. The area is rough, do not go down there at night.
Nice to see how things are changing and a place that use to feel abandoned now feels like it’s getting it’s second chance. It has become a really cool spot for events such as the Red Bull Unlocked Atlanta event last night.
As it stands, not a safe area after dark. Most of the suites are vacant. However, I understand a lot is coming to this space — looking forward to visiting later this year as they continue to grow.

This place is coool. So many art studios. When it's busy, it's a party. When it's not busy, it's peaceful and has lots of corners to hangout in. I hang out at No Tomorrow. It's a chill venue and pricilla is the best ❤️
It has changed a LOT since it’s prime. We had a hotel booked across the street and decided we didn’t want to stay there and found another location completely. Glad we found a different part of town for our weekend.
Cool project they have going on here. Loved the ice cream shop. Great service by a young lady there on Saturday. Also really loved the art of Mike Stasny. He was very friendly and I really enjoyed what he is doing
Can't enjoy your time here because of all the Dangerous Homeless people lurking about and making the whole area unsafe to visit. Not that many stores are worth visiting too either. It's not safe, Day or Night.

This is part of the real underground railroad, which slaves used to find freedom. Unfortunately, you must search to find any historical info at this site. Currently it's being renovated.
My sister and I visited years ago and it was nice then. We did some shopping and picked up a few treats. Lots of stores eating places and cool spots. Cool vibe. Very interesting city
Not going to the event - but big ups to the folks who organized the ball drop for New Years IN ONLY 3 WEEKS! WOW! Excellent Job! Respect is due. Thank you - everyone stay safe! More
Worth the trip. Interesting place with lots to see and do.

Kind of boring Don't let the pictures fool you, there is practically nothing to do here and a lot of the stores have merchandise in then that look like it's from the 1900s.
Nice place to shop around a lot of good stuff definitely recommend it you got to check it up and enjoy the magic of the heart of the city

Me and my friends came here on a Saturday. It wasn’t very crowded but they had allot of things for you to do in this area we had a great time! More
We really enjoyed the Peach Drop! There were no safety issues and we only had a five minute walk from the Underground parking deck. Happy 2019!!!
It is quite a night adventure. Different venues to visit, nice people to mix and mingle with, and the art is beautiful enough to get lost in it.
Sounds like a good crowd I've heard at least over 70 plus conversations during their good selection of music with great base from the outside
It had been 13 years, nothing change much. Less crowded than before, less business and my sweet and sour chicken shop closed. Pity! Pity!
Used to be a hip shopping spot, now the shops are closed, but it is a nice venue for events. The crowd around here can be a little shady.
It has deteriorated and changed in a bad way over the years. Needs to be revamped to bring more businesses and patrons. F.I.L.A. …
I had a great time at Underground Atlanta! I visited a few places on my visit. I made a few purchases and I can't wait to visit again.
Totally immersed into Alice in Wonderland's Madhatter Gin and Tea Party! You've gotta do this! Had such fun for 90 minutes
Definitely would not go to alone. Visited the Masquerade while there, otherwise place seemed very bare. Ample parking.
Under ground Atlanta has been a favorite place to enjoy artists, music, dinning, gallery entertainment and much more
It's work in progress but expect to be great again. Lots of investment to this area. Can't wait to see it . Thanks
It's not underground Atlanta anymore its just under the Ground as soon as I hit the door all I can smell Weed
This used to be a good place, but things have fallen into disrepair. The Banksy exhibit was great though!
Pretty empty and scary Needs to be revitalized badly. Homeless will harass you ever 5 feet.
Not gonna lie. This place is shady and a little scary. Music sounded pretty cool, though.
Nice place to have a good time at. The atmosphere is nice, and the drinks are amazing.
Underground has so much potential to be an amazing art/music space for local artists
Went to see Lavell Crawford! Had a great time!

The city needs to clean this up. It's depressing, and not safe for anyone...
