As far as American train stations go, Chicago Union Station is an iconic landmark - especially for this city built by the railroads. Walk into the old station and enjoy the majestic view and grandeur of a time when architecture mattered. Walk over to the modern station where all trains take off to see the 90’s thrown up all over the walls. The new station, although voluminously efficient, is claustrophobic, always too warm even in a Chicago winter, and a general ethos that makes you badly want to get on your train and leave. Perhaps this is a design feature? Perhaps recent generations have ruined how we design an interact with space? Perhaps this is entirely irrelevant for your visit and you are wondering why you are reading this? Dear reader, because you want the truth. The truth is that this place is great for an instagram photo but the buck stops there. Don’t get here early. Spend as little time as you can and just get through and out of there as soon as possible.
The staff were mostly not very friendly.... Except at the saving grace of this station: the Chick-fil-A. There we were greeted and helped by a very friendly man named Trell (I'm sorry if I spelled that incorrectly, it was a unique name). The food court was great and included a cool looking bar. But it was not very clean. The bathrooms were pretty clean. The platform and the area immediately outside were frankly a little drab and depressing. There were homeless people inside the food court and immediately outside the station - I'm not judging them, I'm just saying what I saw.
I was here a lot this summer and never had any problems getting around. Staff are generally quite kind and will lead you in the right directions. Their trains seem to be well cared for. Only complaint is that when announcements are made in the Great Hall, it's super hard to hear what they're saying. Which is usually important because it's information about where to line up.
Great option for transportation to take if you are heading towards the O’hare airport. Pretty clean and many bathrooms (thankfully!) We lost our phone but it was returned to lost and found who helped us and gave it back to us! The staff are friendly and helpful :) multiple vending machine options, even a BOBA ONE!!!
Union Station is hustling and bustling with Holiday cheer! Great tree in the main hall and pay an extraordinary visit to the Polar Express! Who doesn't like trains and the magical story of Santa? Families will enjoy photos with the Polar Express and check the schedule for Santa. A must stop for the Holidays!
Very lovely, as far as Landmarks go. Very busy train station with a decent food hall. Would recommend stopping in if you have the time, but be mindful of others just "passing through." I expect some sketchy things happen from time to time, and It would also explain the large amounts of security.
Amazing place to go my first time riding a train probably when I was kid I don't know how long it's been but it was fun and amazing on he Amtrak Wolverine trains going back to my home state Michigan and coming back to my new home in Chicago loving it every minute I'm definitely going to ride again
Extremely disappointed that they’d put up advertisement installations that would remove like half the seating, and slightly less disappointed at the lack of any family bathrooms. Otherwise a very pretty organized station with good architecture and a good food court.
One of the most beautiful train stations in America. Besides being a hub of local and national transportation, the Grand Room offers a skylit respite from the rush and crush of daily urban living. Some major iconic movie scenes have been
Union Station is frequented by a broad swath of the population. While scary incidents do occur more frequently than in the suburbs, it's a unique experience to see and interact with such a variety of backgrounds.
Great location for visiting family members who do not own vehicles. They’ve said they feel really safe there even at night. And I’ve never had a problem picking them up outside. Could use a little more lighting.
If you love trains, buses, and architecture, this is the spot. It's a neat piece of history smack dab in the middle of cookie cutter glass and metal. If you need to catch a train or a bus, give it a shot.
Impresionante Estación de Trenes de Chicago, líneas sencillas y limpias en tamaño típicamente americano, XXL. Nada que envidiar a Central Station de NYC. Recomendable visitar
Beautiful architecture and kept clean considering the amount of people that come through each day. Easy to navigate and lots of attendants around to help if needed.
Historically beautiful!! Wish I'd had more time to explore this beautiful building. Opened in 1925- I walked the footsteps of thousands of travelers before me. I
They book "private" events and kick all the train passengers out of the way and off their seats. I found such action to be very offensive to us paying customers.
You can get to this bus hub through an exit in Union Station at the south concourse. It's really convenient to then travel to the rest of the city by bus.
Saw a video about a piano being played here, wishing there was a piano here to play. Add one and I'll play it, upload the video, and give a 5 star rating.
Its like walking back in time. I love these old buildings. The craftsmanship, the detail its grandeur. They don't make buildings like this today.
I looooove the Amtrak, good experience. There was once a bird inside the station and I feel as if that really enhanced my experience.
Beautiful station, easy to understand where the trains are, haven't been since the pandemic but before had plenty of shops and food
Great Train station. This station has a water fountain by the Metra ticket counters (downstairs from the food court).
Muy linda, el inconveniente fue que la cerraron por un evento que era mas tarde y no permitían sacar fotos
Passed through this magnificent building when I took the Amtrak train (my first ever) to Urbana-Champaign.
I went to Kansas City to pick up a family member and on the way back we stopped here OMG it was amazing
I am so glad that they built this. The buses are always on schedule in my experience.
Historical, terminal much like an Airport. Food court, waiting area, restrooms.
La scalinata del famosissimo film Gli intoccabili
Early morning view of Chicago's Union Station.
Not much to say. Lot of buses.
