The Werribee District Historical Society was founded in 1970 and is a non-profit volunteer organization which preserves and promotes the History of Werribee. Werribee Historical Museum houses a collection of historical artifacts. The collection of documents, maps and photos can be access by attending the museum on the above times or alternatively, an appointment can be made . Located at Heritage Building of 1893 which assumes a somewhat domestic character through the dominance of the single storey substructure by a high hipped roof (formerly terminating in a flagpole), and the stylistic influence of the Queen Anne Revival: the combination of this style with the fine Romanesque Revival entrance in three orders, and the tension between the symmetrical pavilion facade and the picturesque subsidiary massing, both reflect the flexible and innovative approach of the architect William Pitt (architect : Princess Theatre, St Kilda Town Hall, Queens Bridge, Bryant and May Factory, Wellington Opera House, Rialto Buildings, Olderfleet Buildings, Victoria Brewery.)
I shared some insight today with the fantastic map of Victoria and our connection to the Southern Cross. The artifact in window that we discussed, I believe it's a tool for wood carvings. I had a great time. Not sure of employees name, but I enjoyed my short visit. I'll be back.
The museum and historical society is a must for all that are wanting to learn about local history. It has a great team of knowledgeable volunteers and some amazing artifacts.
