This war memorial is an arrangement. Recovery material was used, namely the old columns of the former South Station, which have probably been here since 1932 and which form the background of the monument since 1956. The most important commemorative moments in Ghent still take place on this perk on Achtmeiplein. The purpose of this site is to commemorate all Ghent dead of both world wars. Not a single name is mentioned, so as not to forget anyone. The monument was unveiled on June 3, 1956. It is a design by architect Geo Bontinck. On the street side is a stepped platform made of Belgian blue stone. Bronze letters are affixed to the sides of the top step: '1914-1918 THE CITY OF GHENT HONOR ITS DEAD 1940-1945'. On top of this platform is a bronze sword, as it were with the point in the stone. Unlike the letters, this sword is painted to protect it from the elements. Above the cross-guard is a half laurel wreath enclosing the hilt. The frontal side of this wreath is decorated with laurel leaves, the lateral with oak leaves. On the sword is the signature 'VINDEVOGEL'. An 'eternal flame' in the form of an electric lamp in a bronze holder was placed in front of the platform in 1968. Between the columns at the back are 3 more recent memorial plaques. On the east side, near the end of the 'column pergola', there is a stone in honor of 'THE RESISTANCE / 1940 - 1944'. These letters are cut in irregularly cut bluestone and filled with gold leaf. It was made by the company Gebroeders Cornelis from Drongen. The memorial plaque was donated to the city council on 26 May 2004 by the Independence Front (Regionale Gent). In the south, in the middle of the pergola, is a stone in honor of 50 years of peace. The text, carved into the rectangular stone, reads as follows: '1945 - 1995 / 50 YEARS OF PEACE / This memorial plaque / was unveiled on May 8, 1995 / by the College / of Mayor and Aldermen / of the City of Ghent / Jean DUJARDIN / City Secretary / Frank BEKE / Mayor'. At the western end of the pergola is the memorial to the war volunteers. It consists of a horizontal base of bluestone, on which a bush-hammered plate has been erected vertically, which doubles at half a meter into two pillars. In between was placed a square plate (made of granite, with inclusions of labradorite), on which one reads: 'IN RECOGNIZATION / TO ALL / WAR VOLUNTEERS / FROM 1830, 1914-1918 AND 1940-1945 / WHO HAD SAFETY THEIR LIFE / FOR FROST , HOMELAND / AND FREEDOM'. These letters are decorated with gold leaf. Next to the word 'freedom' is a bronze badge of the Fédération Nationale des Volontaires de Guerre - National Federation of War Volunteers. On this one sees the abbreviations FNVG - NFOV under laurel branches and crown,

Als je GENT binnenkomt met de auto heb je op uw linkerzijde een Mooi groot Park, ik vind het knap dat het Zuidpark zo wel gekend is bij de meeste Gentenaars. Sommige komen er om te joggen, anderen om een praatje te maken, een X zag ik mensen met een frisbee, dus voor elk wat wils in het Zuidpark. Hier is het ook vrij proper ten opzichte van plekken in Gent waar ik persoonlijk een hekel aan heb. Sommige buurten liggen vol met blikjes, papier, plastic enz , DAT IS ECHT JAMMER. (Terwijl er vuilbakken voorzien zijn).

I love this park because it is well located in the city and in few steps you are directly in the centre. In fact this public garden is considered the lungs of the city in terms of being one of the largest Green parks. I recommend to everyone to go there, there is enough space for practicing sport, enjoying a picnic or even to disconnect from daily routine.

A long narrow park in the South of the City. Compared to Citadel, is much smaller, and the roads are very close, so it's more noisy and "less natural", let's say. But can be a good place to rest in summer, lying on the grass, and sometimes there are events located here, so it gets interesting from time to time.

Zuidpark zeer goede plek om even uit te rusten of om te sporten en ook pic nic is daar goede plaats voor . en dicht bij de stad .

Historische locatie in Gent. Ideale plaats om rustig te wandelen en te genieten van de pracht van het park.

Bomen kaal. Louter skeletten. Paadjes modderig. Toch heeft dat beetje frisse lucht mij enorm goed gedaan .
