Bartender JM (Janes MICHAEL) was the soul of this nostalgic tavern rife with so much effortless charm: I sat in one of these well worn leather chairs while eating my dinner by the fireplace under a massive stuffed real turkey thankfully that was the only turkey here. I ordered a drink I swear could jumpstart my electric car called midnight in Paris. Michael knowing his stuff told me that green chartreuse is 110 proof, and I’m writing this under the influence of green petrol. Oh geez o forgot to talk about my burger, ok I’m tough and spoiled and picky about my burger: the bun has to have real whole grain, (check) gooey Brie cheese actually melted, (check) sweet carmelized onions (meaning their cooked well but not burnt,) checkmate and I asked for a side of the best tasting brown gravy I have ever had. Only improvement, coffee, and don’t run out of bread pudding. Oh since this is also a bar JM didn’t water down my drink he was/is actually more like a barmacist (their charming word) then your average surly better then you bartender. Once again writing a great review and I will now have to fight you the masses off. I did my homework seriously and glad I did, plus bonus I !gasp! payed a 1/3 the price got twice the service, was served quickly and it was a beautiful presentation. I also loved the music of my misspent youth I’m 55. Your welcome, Terry Davis sent you. Oh hell yes I’m coming back, I’m going to order anything with gravy and an egg and avocado. Plus the French 75, which as their libations menu explained, that the French 75, was “...a powerful field gun used in World War 1, ...Soxiante Quince in French, was created in 1915.” See your smarter already. Sonte (cheers in French).

I love Backspace. Long time visitor, first time reviewer. If I'm in NOLA in the FQ, I am stopping in to Backspace. On my last visit (Labor Day Weekend), we went for dinner and drinks. Our group ordered a variety of appetizers and sandwiches as well as hand crafted coctails. A new visitor asked for suggestions on a drink that wasn't too sweet and was happy with our suggestion of the Berry Gimlet. For starters: we had the Brussel Sprouts with a spicy honey glaze that I wanted to mop up and the Boudin Balls which were the perfect size and came with a lovely remoulade sauce. For dinner: we had a few Backspace burgers (brie and bacon, YUM) and the Spicy Honey chicken (same honey as the brussels) and we kept the remouade from the Boudin balls to dip our fries in. For drinks, we enjoyed Berry Gimlets, French 75, Dark and Stormy, and Old fashioneds. You do have to order at the bar but this quaint spot means that is just a few steps (literally just a few steps) from your table. The kitchen staff is great and bring all food orders to your table.

Cool hole in the wall bar with full service bar & kitchen. Interesting find inside the french quarter, with so many other places pouring pre-fab cocktails out of a bucket. After a rigorous 2 days of activities directed by our commandant (my wife) our group split up & me & 2 of the adult children slipped into the french quarter looking for exactly this type of place... somewhere we could kill a few hours eating & drinking off of our feet. We did just that, we ordered pretty much every appetizer, all were good, before ordering burgers & sandwiches. All reports are that the burgers were excellent, as well as the Grown-up Grilled Cheese which I had. Interspersed with the eating, were several rounds of cocktails. My daughter (early 20s) has not had much experience sampling fancy custom made cocktails (while someone else is paying) with the attention & recommendations from the bartender. This was an excellent experience.

Unfortunately, I have to give this place one star solely based on them stealing from me. This place was conveniently next to our hotel, the bartender was great, the drinks were good, the food was good, but someone altered the total on my credit card transaction. I like to tip with cash instead of on the credit card (employee doesn't have to claim the entire tip) and I put a mark through the tip line. My bill came to $61, I tipped $15 cash, and put $61 on the total line. I got home and reconciled my receipts (I have encountered this in bars before and started saving my cc receipts), and they changed my total to $89. Pretty easy to make a 6 into an 8 and a 1 into a 9. I called my credit card company, opened a dispute, and they refunded the extra $28 that Backspace Bare & Kitchen tried to steal from me. I have started writing NONE in the tip line and if there's room I spell out the total like I would if writing a check.

My recent visit to this bar was a delightful experience. The ambiance is chic and trendy, providing a fantastic backdrop for a night out with friends. The bartenders are true artists, crafting cocktails that are both visually stunning and delectable. The drink menu is diverse, offering a range of options that cater to different preferences. The attention to detail and the staff's passion for mixology shine through in every drink. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to this exceptional bar.

My first visit I was served by a bartender who really knew the craft of making a cocktail and provided terrific customer service. Food was good but not anything exceptional. Each visit following I had different bartenders. One less impassive than the previous. The last visit the bartender was asked to make two drinks from the specials board. She threw up her arms and said she was taking them off the board as she did not know how to make them and didn't have time to look them up. Of the two drinks she did serve, one was good (Raspberry kiss) and the other was eh (old fashioned). It was convenient to the place I stayed and made for a nice stop on our way in or out. Fairly priced.

Off the beaten path and away from the noise. Bartender was engaging and the food was better than expected for an 11 PM audible. I got a bacon cheeseburger that had a generous amount of brie on it. It was exceptional. The bartender helped 10 people make decisions while we were there and everyone seemed to have a positive experience. Also a local working at a fine dining establishment up the road sent us here. She was closing and when we asked where she ate late at night she had no hesitation.

If you're looking for food, don't come here. There is no website so we went off the menu on Google reviews and it was nothing like what we got at the restaurant. there were 5 meal options and the food felt like it was microwaved. it also took 40-50 minutes to arrive from when we ordered, and they didn't event bring it all together. It was only us and one other table ordering food. The drinks were fine, no beer on tap only cans and the margarita was weak.

This is the perfect place to dive into and take a break from the extreme New Orleans atmosphere. Everything is overpriced but Backspace Bar & Kitchen has good eats and drinks at affordable prices. I ordered the Backspace burger and it was delicious with crispy fries. My wife ordered the BLT and they don't skip on Bacon. I did not try the appetizers but I'm sure they are just as good as the sandwiches. The bartender was really nice and chill. I gave him a good tip because he had a large group in the back area and they have seen it all. Don't pass this up!

Looks can be deceiving……especially in Nawlins! Walked in 1pm on Friday for lunch. Place was completely dead and was about to turn around and walk out. Then thought for a moment and thought everyone deserves a chance. Well it was worth the change of heart. Pulled pork sandwich and Brussels sprouts were huge highlights. Ordered the house made hibiscus margarita, which was tasty but a little light on the tequila. Overall a great non-Cajun restaurant!

We stopped here on the evening of Sat. 7/3/21. We loved this place. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the best-we gave the drinks a 20! I don’t remember the bartender’s name but he knows how to mix a drink and he was beyond friendly. We also ordered food that was very tasty. Those brussel sprouts…OMG-the best! The chef(whose name we didn’t get either) was the “bombdiggity”-he talked to us before we order our food and after! He was soooo cool! The name of the bar-I love it-“Backspace”-with the display of old typewriters! Now that took thought and creativity! Definitely CREATIVE!❤️❤️❤️

Food here hits above its weight class. Really pleased with it. Wasn't overly expensive, even for the quarter. To kill some time one afternoon we stopped in for pulled pork loaded fries and a grilled cheese and loved them both. Bar service was fast, a/c blowing cold, and I love a good dive bar hangout overall. Will definitely pop back in for a repeat visit soon.

Great bar. Quite compared to Bourbon St bars but just as good if not better. When we came in it was early and not busy. When we walked in we was greeted and we got to sit wherever we liked. We ordered some food. The Burger and fries I got were both delicious and the ranch was some of the best I've had. She got Fish n chips and it was just as good. The drinks was really good as well. You could tell they put alchohol in the drinks unlike other bars in the area. Highly recommend you walk in and grab a seat order some drinks and food.

  • Sara Quiroz

This is a solidly great bar! I loved the theme and decor but it was weird that they had TVs on, you would expect a writer theme bar not to. They played great music; dinosaur jr, the cure etc etc. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. They had a nice selection of both food and drinks. I tried a couple of cocktails, my favorite was the old man in the sea. I also had a cuban sandwich which was delicious. There were a lot of regulars while we were there and I could tell why, if I lived in the area I probably would be too!

  • Brande Mcclees

Backspace was such a vibe. One of my friends saw the typewriters in the window and we had to go in. Ordering was quick and easy. The atmosphere was perfect for a bunch of English nerds and photography lovers. Everyone loved their food. They offer a scaled down menu but it was perfect for a quick lunch.

This place is my speed for day drinking! Great and decent priced drinks, comfy seating with booth and high top tables and outdoor picnic tables right on the street so you can drink and people watch! Cool "Author" themed bar and while we were there many people raved about the food they were eating. If I was hungry I certainly would have gotten the fish and chips. Great service, great atmosphere and comfy seats. If you're not walking up and down Bourbon street come here for a relaxed time!

  • Monica Bastola (Elyse)

Nice looking bar. Okay drinks... I don't think old fashioned should get cherry juice, but was nice vibe... Go for quieter times from New Orleans hustle. Don't go there if you don't want to wait for 55 min for food. It's pretty slow .... When I asked for food, they said kitchen is overwhelmed sorry.... After 55 minutes and still no sign of food and I ended up leaving without the food because they said they couldn't make what I ordered due to ingredients not available.

  • Christian Wiergowski

Great place! A bar in the french quarter, that offers beer for only 2 Dollars is amazing. And the food there.... The Burger is awsome! One of the best burgers in the area, for sure. And those people here in the comments that say, that its so "pretty weird", that that they dont offer plant based food: Go and eat some leaves. Or the vegan burger at burger king or so. Here you get real food!

When I say it’s the absolute best burger ever, I mean it is THE BEST BURGER I’ve ever eaten. I skipped all the other restaurants in town to come back just to have to this burger, seriously. The drinks are great, too! Our bartender, Jay, was wonderful and made us feel like family. It felt like I was hanging out with old friends in the quaint and homey atmosphere. Every time I come to New Orleans, I will be back here. I loved every bit of it!

I had lunch at the Backspace Bar & Kitchen on my arrival in NOLA. It was my first place to eat as it gave me a sports bar vibe which it was and the drinks on tap were great with a selection of local beers. The backpace burger was the perfect lunch for me after a long flight and I would recommend this place

It was great to find a place with vegetarian options. This is a cool bar with a good selection of beers and bourbons on offer. It’s right on the edge of the French Quarter so really easy to get to on foot. I enjoyed my ‘grown up grilled cheese’ and my husband had a friend chicken and bacon burger. The barman was helpful and made good suggestions for drinks.

Got a pulled pork sandwich and a side of fries, it was awful. Bun was hard on the bottom, pork had a burnt flavor to it and had enough BBQ sauce on it that it almost covered that flavor up. Fries tasted like the oil hadn't been changed in weeks. Get a drink, you'll be OK, but definitely stay away from the pulled pork and fries.

This place is the best place in NOLA to kick back and enjoy a great drink. We found this bar in the last few hours of our trip and it was definitely a highlight of the week. Tina was our bartender and everything she recommended to us was phenomenal. We even got to name a new shot! If you are ever in New Orleans, go check this place out, ask for Tina and get yourself a B-Bomb. You will not regret it!!!

First time at Backspace and I loved it. The atmosphere is dark but inviting, cozy like a library. The menu is small but there's so many great options. We shared the chicken caprese on ciabetta and the blt with avocado. They were both fantastic but the caprese won out. Portions are huge and extremely well priced. The homemade chips were great. Service was fast and friendly. We'll definitely be back!

Stumbled upon this place today. This place is a gem just in the French quarter. Great service, the bartender took care to make my drink right. Came out perfect . Food I had Was amazing. In A Nutshell: -Backspace is a bar along Chartres Street in NOLA. -Situated w/ a couple of other bars next door, you can bar hop into this place if you are looking for more creative drinks like the sazerac. -The Sazerac is the official cocktail of New Orleans. -I tried it here & it was good, one is enough. Overall, this was a nice bar to escape the humid heat & to enjoy the Sazerac.

Written about as “great late night eats” and when we walked in hungry ready to check out this spot it was closing… early. So who knows how the food tastes and it’s NOT a place for late night eats. Our beautiful exotic bartender made us a most delicious spicy margarita and we consoled ourselves by going to the Clover Grill. And it was open for late night eats!

  • Blair KC

Holy smokes, I didn’t know bar food could be so good. We ended up eating here twice because lots of places were closed due to covid and not updated hours on Google maps. You HAVE to get the pulled pork sandwich and a main order of Brussels sprouts. The cooks take such pride in their art and it shows!!! I don’t have any photos because we devoured our meals!

Horrible service. The lady who works there (she was wearing a ball cap) is incredibly rude. Zero customer service. Saw her telling off a guy when the guy was not being rude/disrespectful. I think she hates her job and takes it out on patrons. Waited 10 minutes at the bar for service then left. She killed the vibe.

Be warned: this is as much a literary bar as any bar is a literary bar. The "theme" doesn't really extend beyond the taxidermy on the wall, and it's kind of a dime a dozen bar on a block that has many similar bars. That said, the bartender was really nice and the seating was comfy for a nightcap before returning to the hotel.

The place looks nice and good music, cheap drinks, but I was shocked when they brought out my grilled cheese and it was just a cold bun with shredded cheese and chopped tomatoes. The Brussels sprouts were good but coated in sugar. Fries and burger were correct, but I wouldn’t recommend coming for the food.

Great bar! We were walking around looking for a place to eat and get a drink until our hotel room was ready. So glad we found this place! Food was delicious and you definitely got your money's worth! One of the best old fashioneds you're going to find in the french quarter. Served with a big cube in a unique rocks glass. Usually a quiet spot and next door to 2 other great bars. The burger is also very good when the regular cook is working, very important.

  • Lauren Prince

Awesome little bar with a good selection of cocktails and local beers. They played some good tunes while I was there - 80s 90s rock. The staff are friendly and happy to provide advice on drink selection. A good escape from the craziness of Bourbon St.

  • Tannen Baum

Like a real-life Cheers this Pub has friendly staff that actually remember you when you return, which is saying a lot in a tourist area like the French Quarter in New Orleans. The food was good the beer was excellent and the prices were affordable.

  • Rob Pearson

My experience was wildly different from one of the previous reviewers: my grilled cheese was very good and the brussels sprouts with jalapaño delicious. Bartender friendly and meal served in under 5 minutes. Would go back for a quick meal anytime!

The spicy fried chicken sandwich is good but too fried.

Decided to wind down after work and stopped here to get a drink. Got some boudin balls and fries also and they were delicious. The bartender is really friendly, too.

I did not eat here but entered an hour before closing and was rudely informed that the kitchen is closed. Nothing against this place but I think the hostess may have had a rough night.

Def more of the dive bar vibe but not fully dive bar status. My husband loves dives where I don’t so this is our happy medium. Good service every time.

We spent a couple mid-afternoon hours here as a good change of pace from other French Quarter joints. We enjoyed conversation with the bartender and his suggestions of local brews. Didn’t try any food.

Lots of stingrays. You can touch some in a big pool which is cool. Little sharks too. Nice rainforest room with parrots. Penguins! Otters outta town at the moment! Gonna cost it a star!

  • Mauricio Olivares

Nice place with a neat selection of locally brewed beers. Very affordable too and cozy vibe. They also have fantastic pictures of great writers that makes you feel in a different time.

  • Eric Kazda

Ask for Brandon. Tell him your favorite liquor and let him work his magic. It might take a few minutes on a busy night, but i guarantee you'll get the best cocktail you have ever had.

Surprisingly great bar, great (and hilarious) bartender. Great drinks. We don’t normally stay on this side of the quarter, but we’ll definitely be back to this spot.

Great little bar. Good food with normal drink prices! If you want to be close to the action but not the tourists... stop by this awesome little place
