We went there with happy hearts and gave them a few books to get store credit on. The plan was to buy 1 book with our store credit and 3 others which were all under R30. The lady at the till then gave us a ridiculous amount and we kindly reminded her of our credit. After subtracting the credit, we asked her to look again as the total was still not adding up to our 3 books. She then rudly tells us we are in the wrong since she does this everyday and do not need a calculator. Finally we counted the prices up together, and the total came back more than 50% less than what she told us. Now realizing her mistake, there was no apologies or a friendly attitude. Amazing bookstore, but the lady with the grey hair should rather go spend her time at the beach.

41 Beach Road, Central Gordon’s Bay. This is my favourite bookshop and I could happily spend the whole day there. The first thing that draws your attention is the car on the roof of the shop. From outside of the shop you would never say that this shop is so massive! There are various rooms that you could find any book in any genre. Each room is more interesting than the last. For a bookworm as I am, this is heaven and I would recommend this shop to anyone. There’s a ginger cat who lives at this shop for years. The story goes that he was was knocked over and injured in-front of the shop and has been living at the shop ever since. He is the most friendliest and calmest cat because he obviously enjoys the attention he gets from all the customers.

It was always pleasant to go here until I was questioned by the white woman at the counter about why I chose to wear a mask. Not only is this a totally unprofessional way to engage with customers, but the fact she had enough audacity to believe I'd provide her a reason to validate a decision I make in regards to MY OWN body is insane. This woman's anti-mask rhetoric, which is evident by other reviews detailing her obnoxious and inconsiderate behaviour regarding public health, is what will drive consumers away. Not everyone should be in customer service, especially when they wish to impose their own beliefs on people trying to support their business.

Used to love going here, however my last experience I was disgusted by the behavior of the woman behind the counter (grey hair). She complained about dust on the books we brought in and kept spraying herself with sanitizer as if we were diseased. I took my mother here for the first time after only saying good things (her first outing after losing her husband) and she was faced with this rude behavior. We were told to stand on the side of the counter to make way for other customers when no one else was there, and had a fit when we told her we have more books in the car to bring in. I doubt I'll be back. What an embarrassment

It appears to be like many other second-hand bookshops until you step inside to be amazed by the amazing loads of books! Best bookstore I've been to all over South Africa! However, it is not a bookshop for the fainthearted. Categorized and alphabetized to a degree, it does nonetheless take more of an effort to find exactly the book you're looking for, which may frighten off some buyers, but for many, the need to dig out the perfect book is precisely what makes this book shop so unique! Do not drive trough the gorgeous Gordons bay without stopping here!!! If you love books, you'll fall in-love with this bookstore!

  • Gabbi Seegmuller

My favorite bookstore!! Books are reasonably priced, almost in perfect condition (99% of mine), and you can just do your own thing. Perfect location as you can buy a book, go next door to the best coffee shop and overlook the beach. Easy to navigate what books are where, people are really nice, its just overall a great bookstore that I highly recommend to locals and tourists. The smell of coffee, books, and the ocean? I don't know a better combination.

  • Mativo Mutisya

Nice place to get lost for hours. Books from varying prices R1+. Found a couple of lovely classics in great condition. Nice place for kids to get lost in books. They have a nice selection of children's books and learning charts. Other than that you can get lost in alphabetical order:). Classics and biography sections are awesome... If you need a trip to a tech free time this is the place to go and the staff/owners are very friendly and knowledgeable...

  • Anna Knipe

This bookstore has a lovely collection of a variety of genres. Other than some well known fantasy authors, I did not immediately recognise any of the modern authors that were there. However, the bookstores has quite a large collection of classics and non-fiction. The only problem is that there are many books, and it was rather time-consuming to sort through them all for ones I was actually interested in. Overall, I would rate this 4.5 stars.

  • Mignon Labuschagne

My favourite 2ndhand bookstore in the whole world. Great selection and variety that is well organized. Fiction & non-fiction. Interesting misc items for sale. Very good prices. The atmosphere is serene and memorable. The shopkeeper knows exactly what is available and where it is. Ideal location and after picking a mountain of great books you can have an ice cream next door on the beach. Perfect for family outings, booklovers and dates.

  • Nikolai Swartz

Very beautiful shop with a very homey feel. You can find some hidden gems in amongst the books that are there. The only problem is that their sorting system is minimalistic. Also note that they don't take cards, so make sure to bring cash. But their prices are decent so make sure to bring a lot of cash because almost every book you pick up will make you say "That's not a bad price. I'll get it"

  • Markku Fleischmann

Although a landmark business with a lovely selection, my experience wasn't a good one. I came to donate books and was told to go and place it myself on the floor....I don't work here...you do. After relating this to a friend he asked if I got my credit to shop there. I was never offered one. This after I handed in near perfect books with a retail value of R1500. Staff needs a bit of managing.

  • Luke Ziegenhardt

My all time favourite book shop in the world! Well priced 2nd hand and almost new books on every possible topic imaginable! If you are on the way from.Cape Town to Hermanus and taking the scenic route then stop in towards the end of Gordon's Bay and save at least an hour to browse through this treasure trove of a book shop! I could spend days in there! Oh and it's cash only. Enjoy

  • Nicola Roos

This is such a hidden gem! Books are piled from floor to ceiling and fill almost every little nook and cranny in this old house. I've been visiting this shop for years and it never fails to amaze me. The book prices are also really good. Definitely worth the trip out to Gordon's Bay... Just make sure to take enough cash with you, because they don't have card payment facilities.

  • AR Rossouw

Always find some gems here. When you get the hang of how they are organised you will know where to look to find your favorite books. Met the owner during my last visit this weekend and he pointed out that they just got a bunch of books of my favorite author in that was still unsorted, and helped me find them. Love this place. They have 2 ginger cats roaming about too.

  • Turker Kurun

Absolutely pathetic. I have never met such an entitled person. We went to donate a crate full of books, some extremely valuable. I was greeted by the hag with grey hair and a horrid personality. She threw the books in vein and said she doesn't want it. Will never support this place ever again. Used to love going there. I'll definitely take my charity elsewhere.

  • Aleya Ramparsad Banwari

One of the best not-so-hidden gems of Gordon Bay! All books are usually below R50, and there is an amazing selection so there is something for everyone. I could easily spend hours in there, and even with my tendencies go a bit overboard on book hauling, I only spent about R300. Really recommend this place to any book worm. It makes reading affordable again.

  • Jo Anne

A definite favourite here amongst the locals! Bikini Beach Books is by far one of the best second hand book shops I have visited. Situated in an old house, there is a different genre in each room, ensuring something for everyone. It's very easy to spend a good few hours browsing all the books and extremely hard to not leave with at least one "new" book!

  • Preshema Sewpaul

A 2nd-hand book shop located across the beach in Gordons Bay. Books are quite cheap and sold from 50c upwards. Topics include literature, sports, games, classics, fiction Authors A-Z, parenting, various languages, travel, science, and many more. A great place for leisure books or if you want to buy a batch of books to donate to homes/schools.

  • Natalie Jordaan

This book store is definitely worth a visit. But you need a full day because it is like a treaure hunt and they have so many chests to open . Staff is very friendly and treats guests respectful. So many many books but still neat and clean. It smells of knowledge when you walk in there... so many teachings between covers! …

  • Danisha Gerrits

Such a large variety of books and it is much bigger than the outside of the building paints it out to be. I spent more than an hour looking around at all the lovely books and all at a very good price. I suggest you wait buying a new book and go to Bikini Beach to see if they have it there, because they probably already do.

  • Michelle

One of my favorite places in the whole world. Grab a cup of good take away coffee next door, say hello to the adorable ginger tomcat that resides there and spend hours trying to decide which treasure to take home. I've already have a whole collection of books purchased from them. A must do on a lazy weekend afternoon

  • Jessica Ruger

What a wonderful shop and place to visit. I can literally spend hours here, walk out with a bunch and books and magazines and hardly have spent much money. You can even return your books and get a bit of credit back to get more books. Perfect way to destress walking through this shop and browsing all the literature.

  • Kimi van Rouendal

Awesome bookshop. It looks small and quaint from outside, but is much bigger on the inside (like the tardis). It would take days to properly go through all the books. Any bookworm's dream and a paradise for second hand book lovers. Will definitely be returning. And there is a cute ginger kitty that enjoys attention.

  • Cindy Visser

Been coming here for almost 20 years. Yet I still haven't mastered walking out with just one book. It's just a magical place where you lose tread of time, and buy 6 books for less than a single new paperback at a retailer. It's a book lover heaven. Tip: It's cash only, and bring a sturdy bag for your purchases

  • Leonie Avenant

A wonderful experience to visit the bookshop. Good atmosphere and there are books for anybody that look for something specific. Once you are in the shop, you don't want to leave. Martha and her staff are extremely helpful. Excellent variety of books. Beautiful murial posters for teachers and children, too.

  • Wagner Traut

Interesting place. Books for every interest and more. Place can do with bit of a tidy up. Downside is stench of sewage overflowing in the road outside of a once picturesque setting brings one in hard contact with reality of collapsing basic services and infrastructure. I left feeling depressed

  • talip wentzel

An oasis to any bookworm so no matter material for the kiddos or you studying to be a masterchef believe me you will find a book to your liking and taste . Me and my kids could spent hours in there just being amazed by the sheer volume of reading at our fingertips and prices are fitting

  • annwen mazetti

Ive been visiting here for years and this time I noticed it really needs a good, thorough clean and maybe a fresh coat of paint. It's feeling quite grimy. I appreciated my mask for once to not breath in all the dust and didn't linger as long as I would normally.

  • Adam “MrAdam” Hellyer

Have been a couple of times and would certainly go again. Wonderful selection of all kinds of books at great prices. Our boys also found books they enjoyed. You must be willing to dig, as the shelves are long. But worth it if you like second hand books.

  • Mike James

Bought 3 books. Price at the till was higher than I had mentally added. Only when I got out and re-checked the marked prices did I realise the grey-haired "person" at the till had increased one of the prices by 50%. They won't see me or my fiends again.

  • Bernard Watson

Sometimes you know that for some strange reason you are going to find an interesting read, secondly the subjects from non fiction to fiction is ample and if you stay a little longer than normal you are bound to find that book that shouts out. .read me.

  • Anna Vorndran

Went there to see if they could buy very brand new second hand books, lady very unfriendly and receive not a good price at all. If she were at least friendly it would make it better, but such unfriendliness should nit be if you in the selling business

  • Katia Theron

I absolutely adore this bookstore and have since about the time when I was, I think, nine years old. You could usually find me cross-legged on the carpet, riffling through stacks of books. This was absolute bliss to me! Now, nearly 14 years

  • Matthew Engelbrecht

I love going to this book store. Second hand books all organised by Authors surname makes finding the books I like easy. There are also different genre sections which help as well. If you love book and enjoy a good deal, head to this book

  • Eugene smith

Its such a nice and quiet little book store. Walking in it seems like chaos, but then you start to realise there is reason behind the madness, books are sorted by category and fiction is sorted alphabetically. Every now and then we find a

  • James Marx

Very wide variety of books and located right next to the beach and coffee shops, perfect for casual browsing or if you are looking for something specific from fiction to educational. Can spend hours just browsing to find that perfect gift.

What do you say when you see a car on a roof and the front of the building looks very interesting and then you realise its a bookstore - and when you walk in your mind gets boggled by the sheer amount of books spread over several rooms.

  • Brenda Hendricks
