My girlfriend and I came by this afternoon - we’re both avid readers and having visited a few book stores around Cape Town we were excited to visit you. We’re from Stellenbosch and made the trip after class so unfortunately came near closing time, but we were excited nonetheless. We were not aware however that you were having a book launch event at closing time. When we got there the upper room was filled to the brim with a bunch of passionate readers attending the event. It’s an absolutely lovely store with gorgeous prints available. (See the photo for the most beautiful Meditations print I’ve ever seen). Well, as the launch event was starting and closing time came, my girlfriend paid for her book and we headed for the door. It was already quite awkward having to step over a bunch of people to get to the door while a respected author introduces himself - trust me, I didn’t want to have to step through the crowd either. What made it quite an appalling experience was what we were told on the way out: “She only came for the free wine and now she’s leaving” said to my girlfriend as a group of 40-something year old ladies made no effort to let us go past. Ironically, they all had full wine glasses in their hands; my girlfriend and I on the other hand don’t drink. We came there today because we have a love for reading, but because we are young we were scolded and labelled. The atmosphere was extremely pretentious and I was truly disappointed that such a lovely store attracts such a nasty community of snobs. I’ll gladly pay you another visit on a quiet day to buy that gorgeous copy of Meditations. I hope I won’t feel so out of place when I do.

Without a doubt, the BEST bookshop in all of South Africa (and I've visited bookshops alright, okay). This place fan-flippin-tastic!!! There are weekly interviews with prominent authors and contributors to book series. From Queer Africa reviews to Chinelo Okparanta to Ralph Matekga and Hennie Van Vuuren... You could literally be here everyday for most Monday to Thursday evenings to soak up and hear, from the horse's mouth a first hand account of what their experience was on writing the book. And then... weekends, they host a book reading session for the young ones. I literally never bother myself with anything to do with human beings below age 7 but this I took a keen interest to. So if you have kids, pop in on the mornings for some juice with your baby and a reading session. AND... if you subscribe to their newsletter, and you read it right to the very end; it tells you what each one of their staff members is reading ( super dope!) AND... if you arrive early for the book reviews, you could score yourself a complementary glass of Leopard's Leap( hey... it's free alcohol- don't complain!)

It seems cliché but this really is one of those hidden gems! The streets around the shop seem bland and dingy. Then you walk into the Book Lounge... An old wooden floor house that has been converted into a shop filled with warmth. The service is personal and the staff have a true love of reading. You are invited to buy a coffee, tea, hot chocolate and/or cupcake and sit down on a comfortable chair to read. For me it was the opportunity to read the first chapter to see if it grabs me before deciding on a purchase. While I do this in other book shops I feel it is somehow "wrong", that I have to scan through it quickly and have to stand by the shelf. At thr Book Lounge it is practically encouraged! Don't forget that they also organise events for launches and have weekly story times for children. I wholeheartedly support this wonderful treasure!

The best bookstore in Cape Town. This is the indy bookstore you love to frequent. Regular author talks, kids readings, a number of fun places to eat nearby and a fine liquor store next door! Did I mention that the best coffee shop in the world is a few doors down?? No? Truth Coffee always gets the nod... drop by with a few books from Book Lounge and order a flat white or something stronger. Walk further up the road and take in a show at the legendary Fugard Theatre and grab dinner at the equally legendary Diaz Tavern after. I have visited bookstores around the world, and always make time for my favorite Cape Town haunt!!!

The Book Lounge is probably Cape Town's premier book store. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the stock is carefully curated, and requests are dealt with very efficiently. Hard to find books can easily be ordered by email and you're kept up-to-date with the status of your order. Browsing the shelves is sure to lead to worthwhile new reads (and potentially a problematic number of purchases!) The Book Lounge also host book launches and discussion panels. These are often heavily subscribed so make sure to arrive early to snag a chair and complimentary glass of wine.

The Book Lounge is a lovely independent book shop with a wide variety of books spread across two floors. When I have needed a book that is not in stock, staff ordered it for me and sent email when it arrived. As well as books in the basement there are also a few chairs and sofa so you can chill out with a book. Tea and coffee is also on sale. Check the website for details of book launches and special events. In the past the shop sold very good documentary films and magazines but they are no longer available. Housed in a lovely heritage building in the centre of town.

  • Melindah Mkhwanazi

This book store is absolutely gorgeous and charming. They have a great selection of books, not isles and isles of books to confuse you. The store interior is absolutely gorgeous and the staff and are so chilled. I actually bought the first book I saw (Michelle Obama's book, obviously) but I mean the rest of the books were amazing. I went on a Sunday so it was nice and chilled, got parking quickly too! I love books and I love this book shop.

  • Fred Pheiffer

Probably the best independent bookshop in town, apart from Clarke's in Long Street. Several awards attest to the Book Lounge's excellent service to bibliophiles of Cape Town and beyond. Wide-ranging collection and diligent ordering service. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff who test-read and comment on new arrivals on an ongoing basis. Exciting launches of new publications, with wine and tasty snacks, loyalty club, kiddies club.

  • Muhammad Manuel

This book store called the book lounge is located in the CBD on a corner with lots of parking alongside the street and accessible to anyone. It has a large variety of fiction and non-fiction and is ideal for those looking to pop in a browse the many treasure the books contain. They sell other items like pens and calendars and also have smaller novelty items for kids. There is a kiddies section and many places to relax and read.

  • Sean Greyling

Please support independent book shops like this one! They support local authors. They reward you with discount when you purchase based on what you purchased before, so register with them. They have an online shop. They deliver. You will find the latest GOOD books here and books that stand and have stood the test of time. Books you struggle to find...you will discover them here!

  • kimberley canning

One of my favourite (if not outright) independent book stores. Enjoy the selection on offer. Beautiful space, friendly staff and good prices. Great discounts for registered bookclubs. Not just a bookstore... regular interviews and talks held monthly. One of the few newsletters I enjoy getting in my inbox to keep up to date with events, recommended reads and new releases.

  • Carina Lunt

The book subscription service is exceptional. Caron has sent me exactly the type of books that I enjoy, and has gone out of her way to be accommodating in every sense. Thank you for being such a special person. The excitement of opening a book surprise every month is so rewarding, an amazing concept - also special thanks to Mervyn for his generous spirit and kindness.

  • Amanda Manyatshe

I absolutely adore their range of childrens books and the fact that I can find books for my children with characters that look like them - representation matters. Lots of local authors. I enjoyed the book launches there when we could still have them. They have a wide range of authors from all over Africa. Great location. Covid protocols followed throughout.

  • simangele mzizi

This is an independent bookshop worth supporting. They have a wide range of books on offer and regularly host book launches, which are free of charge. Another great thing about them is that every Saturday at 11h00, they host 'storytime' for kids and all kids are welcome for free. They can also help you if you're looking for books for kids.

  • Terrance Brown

If you’re a bibliophile then The Book Lounge should be top of your list when it comes to independent bookstores in Cape Town. They have a wonderful selection of books across all genres and host a multitude of reading events. The staff are friendly and helpful and they’re located in a great part of the city. Highly recommended!

  • Grant Swanepoel

The book lounge is a beautiful quiet bookshop. Perfect for whiling away a few hours while browsing and enjoying a cup of coffee. There is an intriguing little staircase leading into the basement where you will find the kids section and non-fiction and comfortable seating. The shop hosts a kids storytime on Saturday mornings.

  • Neo Mohapi

Perfect for all kinds of people. Whether you're a bookworm or just looking for some reading inspiration. There's a large variety of books available. You can also pre-order, yay! The staff is absolutely lovely. It's quite cosy with different couches to choose from- bonus! There's a restroom too.

  • Johann Maree

The Book Lounge has established itself as the leading interactive and community-based bookshop in Cape Town with its weekly programme of book launches as well as children book reading sessions on Saturdays that draw in families with young children. It is also very user-friendly and helpful.

  • Lauren Deyce

Lovely, cosy, quirky little book store that has a little something for everyone. Conveniently located on the corner of Roeland and Buitenkant street. They have regular book events, launches, and even comedy nights. They're also very involved with organising the awesome a Open Book Festival

  • eric van zyl

Been there twice. Shop has beautiful layout. Fair amount of books though I couldn't find any of the 3 authors I wanted. Staff ignore you, do not greet nor do they approach you to offer assistance. Same attitude as Exclusive Books staff. Wanted to spend money ,but won't go back there.

  • Tim Mitchell

Highly recommend checking out this bookstore. New books with just right amount of selection. Staff is very friendly. Books are well organized. Good space, light, and places to sit. Everything I feel necessary for splendid use of time hanging with books. Recommend and would return.

  • B

the bookstore is nice and neat. there is a wonderful variety of books even a lovely children's section. they sell some snacks and drinks. there is some quite nice drawings on the wall which I've attached pictures for. I would revisit and bring others to come browse and shop.

  • Dirk Jonker

A lovely place with a cool, relaxed vibe. A great spot to while away an hour. The books are priced well and you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the downstairs lounge. They carry a wide variety of books including some locally produced comic books that I haven't seen elsewhere.

  • Itrat Jameel

This is my favorite place to spend my time at. They have a huge variety of books from kids, current affairs, gardening, science, technology, travel, biographies to all kind of fictions. The book delivery is also so quick, I received my book the same day I ordered it.

  • Rose Tuyeni Peter

Best place to go for contemporary African literature. Atmosphere and service is superb. If you are looking for books that they do not stock, they happily order them in for you. They also host excellent book launches. Definitely my favourite book store in Cape Town!

  • Nóra Sasvári

I love Book Lounge, its chilled atmosphere, the comfy armchairs in the basement with an amazing collection of children's books. I also love that they host our storytelling project, #1001SAstories, on the last Friday of each month. Check it out when in Cape Town!

  • Gadija Moos

Really enjoyed my experience at The Book Lounge, my first time visiting, small, quaint little book store in town, use to hold reading sessions for kids on a Saturday morning and they had a coffee lounge/reading area at the basement before Covid came to existence

  • Nacho Garcia Dapena

I have been visiting them every time I go to Cape Town since I discovered the book store around four years ago and it is always a great experience. And, at least with me, they are always right with their recommendations. I love their selection of books.

  • Helen Van der Rede

The Book Lounge is a fantastic, cosy, warm, friendly book store in Cape Town. It's hard to believe how many books are in this quaint shop. The basement is home to many more beautiful stories between covers and a good brew of coffee to accompany them.

  • Nadine Swanepoel

Friendly, diverse staff, amazing hyper-curated selection of books, interesting layout with the basement section, definitely on the expensive side but understandable since it's not a franchise and the books are quite special. Love the library project.

  • Adele Kirsten

Best coffee in town, strong and flavourable. And of course comfy chairs that allow hours of dipping into the most interesting, engaging and diverse selection of reading materials. And best was getting 15 per cent discount on their 15th birthday!

  • Brendan Keogh

Unexpected quiet spot, in the middle of the bustling CBD, which seems like a world away, once inside, where you can sit, read and enjoy a cup of coffee from the barista downstairs. Amazing book selection and very helpful, knowledgeable staff.

  • Sam Thurgood

Charming old school bookshop with a human touch. If I want to discover new books, get recommendations, and spend some quiet time blissfully browsing, this is where I come. They also have author meet and greets sometimes which is amazing.

  • Nicole

WOW , I contacted the Book Lounge to see if they stocked a book series I couldn't get anywhere - They didn't , but instead of just saying sorry we don't have it .- the PHENOMENAL Megan phoned/emailed/ scurried :-)Around and found all 3

  • J P

Lots of books on South African history and current events, and a good fiction section as well. Too bad books in South Africa are so expensive (around US $20 for a trade paperback -- and that's from a local press, not a UK or US import).

  • Andries Du Toit

My favourite bookshop in Cape Town. Amazing collection (very strong on South Africa, science, current affairs, kids' books), knowledgeable and helpful staff, great events, very active in their local community, and great, great coffee.

  • Debbie Krupski

Loved this place: book shop and café in one, I could have spent an afternoon happily browsing, drinking coffee, and talking to other customers. The vendor carries Cape Town specific titles and some awesome literature on the City Farm.
