Update: I am on their email list and they have a sale several times a year. I have just made mt 3rd purchase online from California and have been delighted each time. They are reliable and very willing to answer questions about the wares they are showing. I gave one old friend a small silver opal pendant for an important birthday and she was delighted. Australia is a must see and you need to see more than Sydney. Visit brisbane (and further north) and visit brisbane opal when you are there. We were there in June/july 2017 and it's a great time of year to see tge NE coast of Australia. Make sure you don't hit school holidays though. Great place to learn about opals and also to buy if you are able. Went here on the bus from cultural center. Small place in a strip mall near a tattoo parlor. But wonderful presentation on how opals were produced in geological time, how they are mined, what the differences are among them you see in stores. A mother and three kids showed up at the same time I did and we're treated to a very good museum presentation even though they were not going to buy jewelry. I did buy and I would trust this establishment for online purchase. They are very up front about quality and price. Worth a trip from dowtown.

Absolutely fantastic!!!! I can’t even tell you what amazing customer service Geoff provided. You can really tell he loves what he does. Came on a Wednesday morning and there was no one else there. He gave us a nice little tour, was super respective of our time (didn’t drag on like some museums). Had us watch a little video and then showed us some samples. Then, left us to wander on our own, no hovering or spying on us at all. Then the shop... omg the shop! First of all I just wanted to say he was super respectful of my budget. I let him know right away and he didn’t try to up sell me at all - everything he showed me was right within my budget. I was actually the one up selling myself because everything was SO beautiful and I had a wandering eye haha!! And very fair prices considering what you’re getting is the real deal. Also shocked me that he let me go outside with a few pieces to see the “fire” in the sunlight. Where I’m from that doesn’t happen at all! So it just goes to show how chill and nice Geoff is. He helped me fill out the tax free form as I’m overseas. Even gave me a map of the airport showing where to hand the slips into. It was just overall an amazing experience and I HIGHLY recommend checking it out!!

My fiancé and I were on the hunt for his wedding ring when we found the Opal Museum. He wanted something special & hand made. Geoff was straight on it, he gave us a million different opals to choose from, each stone was breathe taking (I would recommend a choice of 3 next time around though, it's far to tempting to buy them all & makes for a difficult decision...haha!) Geoff really understood our wants and needs when it came designing my mans ring. He gave us so many options and ideas. In the end we settled for a square shaped ring leaving the opal as the star of the show. We picked up the ring yesterday and it is imaculate, just incredible. It was as we invisioned it, only 10x better. The craftsmanship is second to none & we could not be happier. The whole process was easy-peasy & Geoff's knowledge of all things opal was astounding. Walking through the museum was an equally amazing experience. You can tell Geoff does this for the love of the stones & to share the wonders of them. We'll be back for sure (:

This place was great. My husband and I learnt so much about Opals. Without hesitation Geoff took us through the displays and explained everything. Another lovely lady also took time out to show us some of the different types of Opals. I loved how trusting they were and even let us pick up real valuable opals so you could look at them in different light. They had some activities for kids and informative videos. At no point did we feel rushed didn't and they let us ask so many questions. We didn't feel pressured to buy anything but they did have a great range of products. The passion they have for what they do is admirable and I loved the the entire experience. I'll be recommending this place to everyone even those that may not be interested in Opals because once you leave there you think they are the bees knees!!

Best opals EVER and best jewellery in there shop and online even the silver they use is of the absolute best quality! I took clients there 4 times and purchased pieces and also bought some rings on line! I love love love all their jewellery and they use only solid opals not triplets or doublets, and definitely nothing synthetic just genuine opal. They have a special lift for wheelchairs interactive areas for kids and they have a movie room where on arrival you can learn all about the opals your going to see throughout the museum! I won’t buy my opal jewellery anywhere else now and that’s the truth! their quality just can’t be beat!! I bought several silver rings and even those they send in a gorgeous polished genuine wooden box, just quality and class from start to finish!

Couldn’t recommend this place enough! My partner and I drove past and saw the sign so decided to stop in. We were shown around by a lovely Asian lady who knew her stuff - history of Australia going back 100-200 million years! The tour of the place was free and we got to touch all of the different types of opals (some with very interesting stories behind them). When leaving, we were given a small booklet called “Geoff’s story” - I must say, Geoff - you should be INCREDIBLY proud of what you have achieved, and the staff you have working for you. If you are in Brisbane and love opals - please stop on by and support this amazing place. I must have said “wow” dozens of times and I’m sure you will too. HIGHLY ADVISED - 5* x2 P.s. also got a free pen which is now my favourite

After wanting to purchase a opal ring, reasearching my options i knew this place was where i will find my opal. Plus i live in the next suburb which is handy The endless great reviews don't lie. We had a great morning wandering through the fascinating displays. The artwork is incredible, the tour was interesting and the areas very well planned out. I bought my opal ring because it spoke to me. It really does tell a story. And knowing where it came from, in a mine they own, makes it extra special gives you peace of mind. They just love opals, the history, the hunt, everything that goes into each and every one they find. Staff so friendly and helpful. A must visit when in Brissie.

Have just received my Opal earrings, which I ordered online...They are just beautiful as per the photos and video...Great communication from the company too, with emails covering the invoice and delivery info... Very well packed, couriered to my door. I didn't expect the gorgeous timber gift box either.... It was my first order from them, it won't be my last :) March 24th - And just this week I have received my opal ring - couldn't be happier with it.. The online videos really help to see the size and colours of the jewellery and make the whole experience feel more personal... I love the flash and colour of the 3 stones in the sunlight.... Hmm... maybe another opal for Mothers Day???

Fantastic shopping experience! We were thinking about an Australian handmade gift for acitizenship ceremony and finally we found it in Opal museum; a bronze sculpture of Kingfish Bird looking at a blue Opal as it is a pond of water. A beautiful piece of art by Chris Gavins, an innovative artist from Queensland. We are so happy with this nice and delicate gift as it contains the rich Queensland story; a unique mixture of art, wildlife and Opal. Suzzi, the staff, was amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable. She dedicated her time to find the best gift option for us. I recommend Opal museum to buy any type of Opal because you can trust the quality.

  • Hiru Yoru

To call this a museum is a bit of an exaggeration. It’s a few small rooms behind an opal jewelry store where you can look at specimens of opals, some videos, maps, etc. It felt like they put it together to bring business to the jewelry store. In that respect, I suppose it worked. It got me out there (and it’s a bit outside of the main part of Brisbane). But it really didn’t feel like a museum and it’s not something I’d recommend for people who want to visit a museum. I’d say it’s more appropriate for people who want to buy opal jewelry and want to learn more about it. Personally, I was disappointed, because that’s not what I was looking for.

  • Sharon G

I love this shop! We visited the museum and got the opportunity to meet Geoff; he is so passionate about the opals that it was contagious. We are from the U.S. and the afternoon at the museum/store was so much fun, and we are extremely happy with the jewelry we bought. have been shopping online since back home and have another three pieces on lay away. This jewelry makes great gifts! You can feel safe shopping with this store. We have another trip to Brisbane planned for next February and definitely plan to spend another afternoon here!

My partner had my engagement ring made through the opal museum and it is stunning! Most importantly the whole experience with them was amazing. We went and looked at rings earlier in the year and the staff were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I had been to jewellers to look at rings and they were so pushy I was getting anxiety but the staff here were so amazing and it made my ring even more special. If you are considering an opal ring or any other opal jewellery definitely go here you won't be disappointed. Can't recommend it enough. Thank you to everyone at the museum for everything!

  • Pierre Bonavia

I ordered an opal pendant recently from the Brisbane Opal Museum. The website is fantastic, giving plenty of information on all of the opals they sell, with videos attached showing the opal from different angles and also being reviewed by a model, which is great since you can see how it looks being worn. Geoff was also very accommodating after I made my purchase to allow me to switch it to another one afterwards when I changed my mind. The delivery occurred super fast and the opal looks amazing. Can't wait to give it to my girlfriend for her birthday :) Thanks for everything Geoff!

  • Naomi Flint

The museum has a lot of interesting information about mining and opal formation and there are so many different opals to feast your eyes upon. If you love opals, and gems in general it is a must see. You can also choose out of the bin of random opal rocks to have one polished and maybe get lucky with some nice pieces! Thank you to Bryce for the nicely polished opal, and Susan and Misha for the lovely conversions. It was a great day to spend a few hours!

What a wonderful experience we had when we went here! All the staff were super nice and helpful! The museum is awesome, lots of rocks to see and the details/info of each rocks & stones are very good. We ended up spending a lot of time at the store in the end as well. The staff were very accommodating & helpful, I didn't feel any pressure to purchase anything. Lots of options with a good price range! Highly recommended if you visit Brisbane.

Place is beautiful and brilliant. Fantastic customer service. I can't comment on the tour itself as I didn't do it. They have plenty of beautiful opals to purchase, a mystery box. My favourite was definitely the fossicking area. Just spray the stones with water , grab the magnifying glass and watch specks of raw opal come to life under the light. Fossicking area really fit my vibe, and uber cheap at $10/stone. $150 later, worth it !

It dosen't look like a real museum first but an Opal shop. You need to get in the shop and then you will be led to an Informative place. There are two lovely people helping you with your questions. There is a 7 minutes movie about Opal as well that you can watch it while sitting on the comfortable coach. After taking the tour, now it's time to try it with 3D glassess to see the differences. It's amazing and fun. The shop dosent have a big collection of Opals but fortunately I could find what I was looking for.

  • Saaliha Durrani

The opal museum is a wonderful place to visit if you want find out about rocks and geology or just want admire some beautiful opal specimens. At the museum you are given a small tour and are then given a chance to explore the displays. You can also buy opal jewellery on site and if you don’t want to put a dent in your wallet you can rummage through a bowl of uncut opals and choose your own for about $15 dollars. This is very exciting for children. Overall, I recommend the museum for all ages.

  • Noobaga

If you're a fan of opals, look no further. Geoff is a man who lives and breathes opals and has a genuine passion for what he does that is sorely lacking in a lot industries these days. The museum itself is a treasure and educational and the store has so many precious stones of all price ranges so everyone can afford something. We have purchased 6 opals off him in the last year and it pains my wallet to say we'll be purchasing a lot more in the future. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

  • Rob Hickey

Eclectic mix of opal items ranging from mining history to exquisite opal specimens. The tour starts off with a short movie detailing the history and science of opals. The museum supplies a tablet containing short informative videos while you are on a self-guided tour. The best part of the museum is seeing the different types of opals and the methods used to process them into beautiful jewelry and display items.

Bought the opal for my (now) wife's engagement ring from this mob and whilst there learned of the 'Opal Experience' -- basically a tour of their in-house museum which is ace in itself but also includes an opal rubbing. So we teed that up for the hen party and all the girls went and had a look around the museum and rubbed their own opal! What an awesome experience for them all, they'll have some fantastic necklaces and priceless memories from the day. Great stuff.

  • Kan Lam

I'm very jealous of the people who had a great experience there, seems like all the 5 star reviews had great experience, our group were placed in a room and left there for a good 30 minutes after the video clip has finished, we then went for a walk and had a look at the amazing stones, but without the guidance of the lack of staff, we had to leave in a bad note. And I apologise if this was not a great review, but we did not have a great experience.

  • Camilla Evans

This place is amazing! I had an opal ring that I didn’t like the setting of and a few jewellers had told me there wasn’t much to be done without damaging the stone. I took it into Brisbane Opal Museum and they did a fantastic job at a fair price, not to mention how lovely they were through the process. I’ve since been when my mum was visiting and loved the little museum part as well as all the beautiful pieces. Fantastic place, highly recommend!

  • Elise Philippe

I visited the museum with my boyfriend a few months ago and we loved it! You can learn a lot about opals and you can see a lot of amazing stones! If you stop at the jewellery shop (what I highly recommand), you can probably find the opal of your dreams. We bought 4 necklaces and it was so hard to choose! Now I'm in France and I bought a beautiful pendant to my mum for Christmas... Can't wait to see it! Thank you Brisbane Opal Museum

  • Courtney Hawkins

I ordered 2 pieces online. I was hesitant ordering without actually seeing the pieces but online there was detailed videos of each opal. Delivery was prompt within 2 days (Brisbane to Melbourne). The opals came with instructions of care, beautifully packaged and I could see the pride and care the owner took in sending them to me. 100% would order from them again. You won't be disappointed :) Thank you for my beautiful opals!

  • Taylor Grant

I work in the mining industry in Canada, gold mostly. I wanted a taste for oz mining and the opal museum had just that. The staff were brilliant and knew their material. Before actually taking my own way through the museum they explained each room and the history of opal in Australia. Very warm experience. My partner is quiet jealous as he is a geologist in Australia. Will definitely be bringing him before we leave.

  • Stephen Kop

I made an online purchase - I usually wouldnt do this with jewelry, but this is the new covid normal I guess (I'm in Sydney). Delivery was quick, discreet and secure. The opal earings look amazing, much more 'fire' in real life compared to the pics and video. I will be a repeat customer for sure. * side note for the Brisbane opal team: great job with the videos as that was what made me comfortable purchasing online.

  • Vee S

A great place to learn about and look at gorgeous opals of many different kinds. An incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff member will guide you through the museum section and then you can always leave with a beautiful souvenir from their range of opal set jewellery. This is the second time I've come to the museum and both times have been engaging and educational. If you love shiny things it's a must!

  • Judy Nicholas

Love Australia and also opals, so just a matter of time til I bought my own opal from the shop online. Although I have never personally visited the museum it will be on my list on my next visit. Received my opal pendant in good time considering the effects of Covid, beautifully presented in its box and wonderful blue sparkles when it catches the light. Great purchase, very happy. Many thanks from the UK

Opal jewellery store just north of the city with plenty of public transport options to get you there. Friendly staff who know their product. Has a small museum about the history of Australian opal mining etc for a small entry fee. Nice opal jewellery and rough opal specimens. Definitely worth a visit.

Very interesting tour with a good shop. The tour is very personal and informative. We were with one other couple. They don't do a hard sell to buy that is quite refreshing. Easy parking very near. Free as well. We'll worth going on. Lots of information and the chance to hold some opals and inspect them with assistance to identify the difference between a low value to high value stone

  • Chrissie Chapman

The Gentleman was very pleasant upon arrival . The opals are beautifully arranged on display with plenty of information. I had a great time whilst learning about opals .. Absolutely fantastic! Such a calming space. Wonderful place to come and chill whilst here in brisbane. Definitely a sight to see.. 5 stars .. Just wish I could afford to take a big pendant home... Haha

  • Leslie Hogarth

I came across them online because I was looking for a quality opal at a reasonable price seeing as it was my first opal purchase. I love my ring!!! I recommend anyone who wants a beautiful opal to check them out!!! The owner always responded to my concerns quickly and was very helpful!!! I will definitely be buying from them again ASAP!!! But bigger this time lol!!!

Nice and cozy museum that tells everything about how opals were formed and how they are mined. The staff is VERY friendly. In the museum store you can buy some nice jewelry or even loose opals for quite a low price. The museum is easy to get to by public transport from the city center, the ride takes less than half an hour.

  • David Heider

Very friendly and outgoing staff provided a quick but through tour on how Opals are formed and mined in Australia. They let you hold the owner’s personal collection in your hands. They have a great store attached, but do not pressure you to buy at all. They were very helpful in finding the perfect gift in my price range.

  • Mikhailov Hsatasia

I love this place, so much to see, lots of information to learn. The videos are interesting, there are lots of interesting and beautiful opal specimens, you get the chance to touch some of them, also see the workshop on site. There are also interesting books about opal and the lady is very knowledgeable and friendly.

I was really impressed by the efficiency and friendliness of Geoff and his other staff while ordering a ring from WA. There’s plenty of opals and settings to chose from, plus clear explanations and warnings on what to look out for, taught me a lot in a short time. Thanks a lot folks. I have a lovely ring to enjoy.

  • Rachel Biggs

I cannot rate Geoff and the museum highly enough. He was fantastic showing us around, getting a stool especially for my children etc. Took the time and effort to explain things to my eldest daughter so she can return to school (in the UK) and tell her class all about it. Thank you so very much Geoff
