I had a terrible experience at Golden Braid today with a tarot reading from Myndy. I told her the issue I wanted insight on when I started. She then spent the next ten minutes giving me a long rant with her "personal advice" on the situation (seriously that's what a friend or therapist does, not a self-proclaimed psychic). She finally pulled out a deck, asked me to pick one card, looked up something in a book and then told me I was going to get pregnant [and gave me an exact two week timeframe for when I would conceive]. It felt disingenuous and "off." I told her I didn't feel like she was really picking up and connecting to my intuition. So she sat there for five minutes with her eyes closed and then came back and said there were no blocks. I don't know what she "saw," but there was definitely was a block because she had zero connection with me. She asked me what I wanted to do. And I told her again my objective which I'd already stated at the beginning of the meeting. At this point, I knew this was going no where and a waste of my time. So I left, went to the front desk, explained the situation and asked for a refund. I would NEVER ask for a refund for a reading even if I didn't like what the cards said, but Myndy didn't actually give me a reading. She made some personal rants, told me to draw one card, and wouldnt admit that she couldn't connect up with me. After a terribly long time waiting while the front desk young boy whispered on the phone with his manager, he came back, only to say he needed to go talk to someone else to see if they could refund my unused time. At that point, I'd had it and left, not worth the hassle. It doesn't reflect well on Golden Braid that they won't listen to their customers (it was do upsetting, I was crying at the front desk, relating the experience). If you believe in and support your psychic readers so much, you should have no problem giving the benefit of the doubt to your customer or at least offering to use their wasted $45 to see a different psychic there on another day. I honestly can't believe Golden Braid didn't step up to the plate to resolve the situation. The whole experience left me with a terrible taste in my mouth, and it's safe to say I'll never go back.

Feeling a little bit confused as to why this place is called Golden Braid “Book Store” when there were so few books and so many candles. Candles and incense are fine and dandy, but when more floor space is devoted to things that aren’t books than to things that are, that’s a little confusing. The candles and everything else were well stocked, but many of the book shelves were empty or almost empty. Of the books they did have, there were only one and sometimes two of each copy. Again, a really confusing way to stock a book store. They did have a whole display dedicated to Hanukkah. I appreciate the attempt at inclusivity but Hanukkah ended in November and still having that display front and center just makes it seem incredibly tokenizing. If you have any sort of sensory processing issues, be careful coming here. The smell of candles and incense was so overwhelming it was difficult to think about anything else. Fortunately, the one staff member was very kind and attentive.

The Golden Braid is a very lovely bookstore, with helpful and friendly staff. There are lots of unique gift options and book suggestions. I loved the staff suggestions' bookshelf. I would love to give them 5 stars; however, I was disappointed today where I bought a book which rang up for much more than the published price. To explain, the price on the back was £12.99 (British pounds), which I estimated to be somewhere around $15 USD. When the book rang up as $22.95, I was surprised. I pointed out the £12.99 on the back and they said "it must have been the price we bought it at". I didn't have time to ask for more information (also didn't want to be a Karen), and already promised the book to my teenager, standing with me as I bought the book. I would be happy to update the review if I'm mistaken or missed the price tag on the shelf. On first impressions, however, it makes me think twice about going back.

This review is specifically around the unfortunate tarot card reading that I had done by Natasha. Both my friend and I scheduled appointments with her, $45/half hour and each of us had the same experience, doom and gloom. Every question asked was answered with a negative response, nothing was positive, it was all bad news. I find it very interesting that we both had the exact same type of reading. I'm not sure if Natasha was off that day or if the deck was faulty but I can't say that I recommend getting a reading by her. It's not so much that I can't hear bad news but everything from a new guy I'm dating, to my job, to my son was just really blah. It was one of the worst tarot readings I've ever had and might have ruined me from doing this in the future.

Delightful book store! I love how the shop is set up, with most of the books fronted so you can see what they are, rather than trying to cram as many books in as possible. The entire place has an aura of peace and awareness. I love the specially curated sections which focus on various facets of existence (grief, healing, gender studies, etc.), and the great kids' section. So many interesting non-book items too, like socks, incense, tarot cards, magnets, toys, and seasonal items. I was delighted to see books from some of my favorite authors, including my favorite mortician, Caitlin Doughty (look her up!). This bookstore is a gem. I'm so glad I discovered this well-stocked and thoughtfully laid out independent book store. I will definitely be back!

The bookstore had a great atmosphere when I went to visit. They had a great selection of books and oils. I also went to get a reading with Barbara. WORST READING of my life! I paid for a half hour, she took up an hour of my time ranting on about political nonsense. She cut me off when I asked questions I wanted answered during my reading. Everything she said was completely off with who I am. During the end when I asked her if I can ask A question, she told me the reading was done and asked me to leave. Never have I been disappointed with a reader before! I talked to the assistant manager, and she didn't seem to care when I shared my experience. If you want to waste your money for a reading, you can always visit Barbara at this book store.

Hraefn did my reading yesterday. At the end he asked me how he did and I just said “that was weird” thanked him and left to get coffee. I just want to say I was pretty taken aback and still processing so that was the only thing that came to mind. During the reading not a word came from my lips. I asked no questions and gave no insight to what I am dealing with. I wanted to see what he could do. While he gave me some good generic advise at first. Then he pulled some wildly specific and correct interpretations about my current life from the ether. I want to say I’m a very skeptical person. But I know that he is not full of it. Hraefn is legit. He said some things that only I know things I don’t share. He is good with those stones.

I've been here twice in the last year or so now, and both times have left with negative experiences and feelings based on my interactions with employees, I usually don't have a problem with the most annoying of employees most of the time, but their comments are very snude and snark, something I do not appriciate of people who work somewhere that I pay money to, voluntarily I might add. If they act nice (in my experience) it's in a superficial way that is actually rude. Won't be going here again, too bad because I'd prefer this type of place over Barnes & Noble superstores, although they also don't demand an ID for every payment..Since when did this become acceptable for buying a $10 book?

  • Kay West

Super cute store! Very unique items from the books, gifts, little trinkets, incense, etc… I love the vibe this place gives off! The only reason I gave three stars is the staff is not attentive at all. I browsed the store for a good 15 - 20 minutes and not one staff member acknowledged I was even there, so with out buying the things I had picked out to purchase I put them back and walked out. Personal opinion but metaphysical stores should be more personable considering the things you sell in your store… it’s a craft of vibes and energies, so when you don’t give that off to your customers then it’s not the place for me! But really is a very unique store!

  • Heber Cloward

You should go there even when NOT looking for books, It is the best place in SLC to drain your stress away. Seriously. If you just go in and sit quietly, your shoulders drop and you start breathing slower an deeper. Within minutes the relaxed feeling kicks in. It might be a feng-shui thing, I dont know. I used to come in and just sit. Thats all. If you have been there you probably know what I mean. If you havent been there drop by for 30 minutes and just sit. Whether you even look for / buy a book; visiting there is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Need to completely de-stress? Well the address is right here in the web page.

  • Wade Sorensen

I used to love golden braid books. I've literally been going to this store since 1999, I've spent thousands of dollars in this store. But as the years have gone by it has gone from a store with a relaxing atmosphere, with a female aura, that brought out the beauty in everything. To a store that every time I walk in as a MAN I no longer feel welcome. It has become a place where masculinity isn't welcome anymore. I will no longer be spending my money here. Nor will my wife and children, nor my friends. It's become too PC and imbalanced.

  • Greg Holmes

I’m extremely dissatisfied I came to pick up a book and the person I talked to on the phone said they be open at 9am but they open at 10am this is my second time driving all the way up here from Sandy for a book that I special ordered and you couldn’t take 5 mins to run my card and get me the book. I’ll be going to another book store for now on. I canceled my order :( your gal should have done all she could to help a customer who drove so far to support your business. I’ll be recommending a different book store to people for now on.

This operation is supposed to be THE oasis of peace and harmony. However, apparently a young person is not required to have any customer service skills and is even allowed to demonstrate ignorance and hostility!? We were prepared to spend a lot of money on merchandise but left empty handed after a young woman went out of her way to not only NOT HELP my wife but also offend her. Quite the operation they’re running!?? We went to the Dancing Crane in Sugarhouse for a wonderful experience instead! (Spent nearly $200!)

Beautiful store focusing mostly on the self and spiritual themes, with books on buddhism, self help, mental health, etc. they have a children’s section, cards and gifts, too. The store smells nice, has beautifulmusic playing, and has some nooks here and there to sit. The staff is pleasant and letyou be, unless you ask and then they are very helpful. I saw two booths-I believe they are for some sort of psychic reading. It is located by a cafe, for the perfect combination of body/mind/spirit nourishment.

  • Robin Netto

I was in the Book store and so excited as I have been in Denver for a long time. A customer service person came over to help me look for a particular design for cards the variety of books etc was good except I am a lover of Numerology and they only had 4 books. I went there. For that . But my love for the atmosphere is what draws me. I sat and meditated by the pond which I love. I will ALWAYS choose Golden Braid for my books or just to sit and relax in the environment and Peaceful waterfall:0)

  • Kerem Cantekin

It is an original bookshop, but perhaps for that reason it would not be my first place to look for regular books. It is a place to look for spiritual books. Sound of water in the place is really nice. And even if you are not interested in mainstream spiritual stuff, it is nice place to just look around without finding anything, and occasionally you can find something interesting like the one I found for writing, zen of writing, which gives interesting advice to an amateur writer like myself.

  • Sherrie Moon

My favorite bookstore! So relaxinging to shop here..the aromas, sounds, and the help is very knowledgeable..and go out of their way to find answers to questions or look up book your wanting and will order in. Whenever I have had chakra/aura pictures..or taken another to do them the clerks for years understand and explain so much..rather than just printing off the booklet to read..they explain more than is written! And explain everything in understandable terms!

  • Cameron Taylor

This place was great for my first visit! The staff was super friendly and very eager to help with any help I needed. Beautiful displays of books and toys and stuffed animals. Loved the displays on cosmology and smudge sticks, and incense. Great selection of items! The Oasis Restaurant that I had brunch at was very delicious and everything was prepared amazingly. They have a choice of your food to be vegan.

  • Fleah

I really enjoy this store, have been a couple times over the years. The products support local and small businesses. I also really like the selection of books. The main genres are self improvement, spirituality, children's books, and non fiction. They also do tarot readings and have an array of incense and smudging tools. The people have always been very kind. I will continue to be a patron here :)

  • Gracen Pernia

Loved some of the books offered here, even bought a few. The only turn off was some of the books that play into the matrix, the politics, and cultural toxins. By selling books that play into the illusion of separation only keeps us further away from the Divine. (Source, God, etc.) we are all connected to each other, we are all part of the one, and are all connected to the Divine. Namaste

I go to Oasis Cafe and Golden Braid Book Store 3 to 5 times a week. Oasis Cafe is my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City and the book store is fabulous. I highly recommend both of these places. The service is excellent and the energy in Oasis and The Golden Braid is out of this world. It’s a hidden gem. I’ve been going to both places since they opened many years ago.

  • Heather Kirby

I love this place. The feeling you get when you go in. Is awesome! I have had a few sessions here from Psychics. And there has been things in my life that have happened , like they have said. And I didn't do anything to make it happen, it just did or the opportunity came up and I took it. Great Staff, and I will be coming here for years to come.

  • Wrap Rite

I had my first ever reading done by Shawn. I was an awesome experience. You could tell he had a real passion for what he was doing. It was very comfortable and i truly feel like everything he said really hit home to me. I’m still playing it back in my mind. I have already recommended some friends and I will definitely be back soon as well.

  • David Mumma

This is a great location for finding unique books and material on metaphysics or other new thought or even self help material. There is a mix of jewelry that is interesting and great food. I really enjoyed the fresh roasted coffee made on-site. Those looking for vegan or gluten free can likely find something here to satisfy thier palate.

  • Sarah W

Oh my goodness, this. Place. The selection is really something, with a sincere, growth-oriented, spiritual, inclusive, artistic vibe, and the staff are welcoming and more than happy to answer your questions and make great recommendations. It’s a little oasis. You can also always find awesome gifts here. This place is a treasure!

  • Ann Baity

The bookstore is always full of fun and unique things. We ate at the Oasis and the food was lackluster at best . The grilled cheese sandwich was burnt and served on plain white bread with cheddar cheese and nothing else tomato soup with cold but the service was great. We have eaten here before and had a great meal

  • Justin Wright

What better way to kill a little extra time between appointments downtown than swinging into Golden Braid Books? This place has such an interesting selection. The staff is always super charming and helpful and it also doesn't hurt that they're next door neighbors w/ the lovely Oasis Cafe! 10/10 would recommend!

  • Heidi S

Cool, groovy, I love the outdoor cafe area too. Bought me some books, a shampoo bar, and some local yummy Salt Lake made "The Chocolate Conspiracy" chocolate (Blackberry Ginger Chocolate Bar). Would like to get some nice smelling small candles too - I'll save that for another day though. The staff were helpful.

  • Kaitlynn Stout

Loved this shop. SO MANY good books, just sad that I don't have enough room in my luggage to take all them home ‍♀️ They also have a nice selection of scented candles and body products, and jewelry. Not very many tarot decks, but most of the ones they do have are ones I hadn't seen/heard of until now. …

  • Xochitl Ayala

This place is awesome!!! The staff is always super nice and helpful. You can get a lot of awesome things. Very reasonable prices. They also do psychic readings here I have done it in the past. I brought my s.o. here and he loved it too. He's def a fan. There is also parking here AND a cafe called Cafe Oasis.

  • Taylor Cecil

If you’re going to walk up to a 7-month pregnant woman to tell her to put her mask over her nose while in your store, but then immediately after walk over to the customer smelling product with his mask below his nose and answer his questions without confronting him..... guaranteed to lose my business.

  • Carolyn Bates

Came from out of town and wanted to buy a book for my sister. Didn't know what to get and needed some help, I was met with an employee Emily. Whom was very personalable and extremely knowledgeable. I felt very welcome and the energy of this establishment was very positive. Will come back next time.

  • mike green

Great selection of books Very helpful Staff Great order and yen knows how hard to get books Like doctor Joel Dee Wallace rare Earth forbidden cures dead doctors don't lie Let's play herbal doctor Plenty on Nicola Tesla And Alister Crowley Alchemy Also Astrotheology

  • Aura V

A lot of space for not a lot of product. Things are just spread out. Couldn't spend too much time in their though due to the heavy amount of incense being burned, both myself and my husband who loves incense had a headache really soon after entering.

  • Jane A.

You get profiled by the employees and it makes for a very uncomfortable shopping experience. They will ignore you until they want to follow you around to watch you. Very unprofessional. Don’t go there if you want to be treated with respect.

  • David Raphael

Their staff is very friendly and amazing. They have an amazing selection on self-help, spiritual, and esoteric literature. A great place to get gifts for someone you believe could use a little light in their lives (if they're open to it).

  • Vee Eh En

If you're looking for new-agey esoterica or other feel-good mass-opiates, or for "healing" candles, or what have you, this is your place. If you're looking to replace your dogeared copy of Blood Meridian, go to King's English.

  • Allie Marini

Lovely, very intentionally-curated selection of books & a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere. Between the incense & Cafe, it smells heavenly. I enjoyed visiting & browsing the selection of tarot, books, and metaphysical supplies.

  • Angela Layton

This is a very unique bookstore and offers not only books but various other items such as taro cards, incense, and crystals. The atmosphere is very peaceful and the surrounding outdoor cafe adds to the wonderful experience.

  • Robert Rossi

I love to browse around this store. There are lots of great gifts here for the hardest to shop for person. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful at choosing items, gift wrapping, and locating particular items.

  • Bethany Searle

NOT STROLLER OR WHEELCHAIR accessible. You know moms like to buy books and eat at cafes too. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Thought it would be a nice place for lunch. Dont recommend atleast not for moms! Or people in wheelchairs.

  • Barbara Hatcher

There was a sale recently and I bought 3 books on half their original price. Although I am a keen reader and I buy books from time to time no matter what, I rarely buy more than 2 in a month (monthly budget, you know).

  • Debra Foutz

I recently had a reading with Shawn. I believe his words were divinely inspired and I would like to say "Thank you". Thank you for being there at that time, in that place. Meeting you was meant to be. …

  • Mary Anne

The employees are rude and everything is overpriced. The book selection is below average and it makes sense cause it’s probably white women choosing most of it. Cultural appropriation around every corner.

  • Carl Fako

Want to experience both small and great awakening within your being? Golden Braid Books is a great resource treasure house hidden in the market place of the ten thousand things. Feel more, think less.

A total nostalgic spot for us. I used to visit here when I was younger. Not much has changed. Still a great book store if you are into spiritual books, and rare gifts dealing with zodiac.

  • McCall Castro

Lovely bookshop and restaurant. The Golden Braid perfectly captures Salt Lake City's hip, urban culture and unique charm. They also sell darling crystal necklaces among other treasures.

My last night in SLC and my daughter and I fell in love with this place. Definately great energy and not sterile. Beautiful place, great food , great books and awesome customer service.

  • Eric Draper

Great local place for interesting books and products, slightly on the pricey side, but the good vibe and product selection is worth it. Plus supporting the local economy is important!

Trying to conceive of this places business model baffles me. I can’t see how it makes any money whilst having practically zero supply of books to choose from
