I've lived in Kingston long enough to remember John Lewis being built. For many years it was an excellent store but really in recent years it has gone to the dogs. For many years it was staffed by dedicated, polite and committed people, smartly presented and ever so knowledgeable about the things they sold. The merchandise also was well presented with plenty of choice and of course they were 'never knowingly undersold' so you could go to John Lewis with confidence and know that you were getting the best price for what you bought. It was a successful company and a pleasure to do business with. How far it has fallen. The 'partners' as we are now perpetually reminded they are seem to fall into two categories, the bewildered and the arrogant. The bewildered ones know nothing about anything least of all what they are selling and the arrogant, well, don't we know they are 'PARTNERS' and far too important to be dealing with people wanting to buy things. Add to that whether they are bewildered or arrogant, they all look like they are dressed in what was left over at the end of a jumble sale rather than the smart and professional look of old. Talking of jumble sales, I've seen things for sale at one better presented than JL currently present anything. On my last encounter with a 'partner' I wished to buy a new kettle. I picked one up and took it to the counter where several partners were talking, I could hear enough to know it wasn't a work conversation. Eventually and just as I was about to leave it and walk away, one of them peeled herself away from the group. She scanned the kettle and said 'bag?'. I said 'no thank you'. She then pointed to the card machine and said 'card'. At that point I'd had enough of her rude behaviour and so again I said 'no thank you' and left, I bought the kettle elsewhere for less money than John Lewis wanted so their rude and dismissive service worked and I made a saving, thank you to that rude, jumped up shop assistant, you're helping John Lewis fail. My final and utter dislike was closing the entrance onto Kingston Bridge, why on earth make it more difficult to enter or exit the shop? Perhaps as the store fails, their deranged chief executive is planning to kill off that part of the shop so she can turn it into flats?

Very poor service at the sofa zone. Staff were chitchatting around and not giving any help unless you had to call them. I wish it was not because of the skin color. I bought an armchair in the store a month ago. The order is missing and I still could not track it. I talked to customer service twice, I got a case reference no. and they told me the branch would call back, but no one is calling back. I paid the whole amount but I have no information about the chair. I could not check the status at all even though I got the order number. Online shopping would be better. Update: I bought the chair in-store in May. 2days later I received a call telling me that the fabric I chose was unavailable, I have to call back the next day to make my choice. I waited for a month but I could not check the chair’s status at all. I spoke to the online service and they only created a case number, no one called back. I spoke to customer service again and he told me the supplier would call or email me in 2 days, but again nothing reveived. I received an email until I wrote a review here. The email was still telling me the fabric I first selected was not in stock, but I have already called to change the fabric a month ago! Nothing has proceeded! I replied to the email again with all my records and screenshots. No follow-up! Nothing! Last month I was told again about the same situation with the fabric. I was so pissed because I have already talked to a lot of people in John Lewis but no one looked into the matter and did nothing. Finally, there was a helpful lady from customer service who assist me to reorder the chair. Last month I received calls telling me the chair would be ready on 14th August. I am revising this review because I still haven't got my sofa chair! Let's see could I get the chair by the end of the year? I want to give a 0 star instead.

Went into Kingston store to buy my son’s winter shoes … sat down for at least 10 minutes without any of the staff paying any attention to me and my family despite it being obvious I wanted to be served or at least being told when I we could be served next. When I enquired about the service I was told it was one to one service. The family served before us was clearly deciding after being served and letting their child run/walk around while the shop keeper stood by watching and doing nothing…. When I asked if we could be shown shoes while other family make their mind up I was told “no”. We finally were served by another member of staff after yet again my request to be served. We left within 10 minutes with a new pair of shoes for our son. I would have been a great experience but your staff was dismissive unhelpful and to be fair disrespectful. It seemed she took pleasure in refusing to serve us. There was no curtsy apology or trying to find another member of staff to look after us. When we were leaving I saw another young family sitting helplessly waiting for ANY attention from your staff- utterly rubbish customer service in kids shoes section! The second assistant was very good though

They post this expensive item with 48h Royal mail. The parcel arrived late and open without the SSD in the box. Despite me pointing that the parcel was open straight away to the delivery person, they are not able to leave a note or attach one more photo of open parcel (after she had uploaded to their system the first photo with my hand taking the parcel). They told me to complain to the sender which I did. They told me to wait more than a week till they investigate the case. I purchased the SSD on John Lewis website and not on samsung website were I have 10% discount only because of customer service. At the end the customer service turned to be rubbish, John Lewis is not what it was previously Update: They told me to wait 7 days. Then they told me to wait till tomorrow. Then they asked me to wait more 48-72 hours. Still waiting with no item in hand which I needed urgently! They email me saying they cannot reach me on phone and asking to call back. I ask them to write in email what they what to say on phone. They ignore my request and ask to call them in their reply. It goes rounds

I decided six years ago, following a bad experience with the carpets I bought for my house when their fitter messed up the stairs carpets and cut them wrongly, not to buy anything from this branch but I made the mistake of buying a new laptop from there in June 2023. I couldn't print documents from that laptop. The aftersales service in the computers department manager was very unhelpful and repeated the same sentence: "I don't know what is wrong but you better buy a new printer. He refused to sort out the computer set up and I ended with returning that laptop. I bought a laptop from somewhere else and got n touch with Microsoft online who sorted out that problem for me yesterday by downloading updates into that laptop which they controlled virtually. In addition, I noted that almost everything in the store is overpriced and there is a hint of arrogance and rudeness to customers.

Branch is shabby The branch is shabby, spread over two buildings, there is no maintenance. Toilet are smelly and filthy... wall crumbling. In the restaurant, the trays and glasses and cuttelry are not even clean. The food is overpriced and bad. Goods are over priced, usually much more than elsewhere online. Staff can range from polite, pushy, indifferent to plain rude. Took some convincing to return a couple of lights. Was met by a person who took us for criminals until proven otherwise. The only good stuff is the Waitrose downstairs. The Bental mall just next door is still far better. ---- UPDATE 24/02/23 I can't wait to see the improvement to your shop and to the shopping experience. You can't charge the amount you charge an not provide more than your competition.

  • PHG !

Went in an a partner offer to have a free coffee and cake. Apparently it ended the day before (23rd) and so no flexibility to change and deliver the offer by staff even though the restaurant was totally empty by 3.30pm with so much cake still available. We bought what was there and enjoyed it but wasn't a good experience. Went to buy a camera (with lots of buying power in our pocket) had great service, the sales guy was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient to exain.the functions and benefits.of.each camera by model and by.price and by use. Brilliant. Unfortunately all their cameras were out of stock. So we ended up buying a fairly expensive camera at Jessops in Kingston.

We had a great experience shopping here a few days ago. We were greeted by the lovely old white man who seemed to help people with where they needed to go. It reminded me of Harrods and the level of his service definitely matched that Harrods standard. He helped us probably 3 times in our time there and was really knowledgeable of the departments. He was so friendly and made our experience really nice. I had no idea John Lewis had this service as it definitely made a difference to our shop that day. Thank you to the lovely man for approaching us so nicely and helping us with directions.

  • Sam

Spent most of the day here yesterday. The first few members of staff we encountered were very unhelpful unfortunately and we almost left. But it all changed when we met Ava in the nursery / baby area. She was fantastic. Very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We had so many questions which she was able to answer and also provide great suggestions. Her customer service was excellent and made navigating through our newborn list of requirements very smooth, which as a new parent can be very overwhelming. She’s a great credit to the store - all 5 of these stars are for Ava.

  • Roadrunner 0-1000

Bought an expensive TV which was delivered with broken screen and which won’t turn on. Obviously completely useless. We didn’t see until it was unboxed and now trying to return the product is absolutely impossible! You would have also expected some form of apology. But nothing. All their emails are “no-reply” and when you finally can find a telephone number to call them - you get sent from pillar to post. An incredibly poor response to a problem which I expect will take ages and immeasurable stress to resolve. NEVER GO TO JOHN LEWIS. I wish I hadn’t.

Came in to have a look at a pushchair we had bought from John Lewis online, just to tipple check we were happy with the one we got. Kate asked us if we would like to push it around and talked us through some of the features and how to close it down. She then asked us if we would like to have a car seat talk through which we were grateful for. She had been left alone and whilst we were having our talk another couple were getting impatient but Kaye dealt with it very well. Would highly recommend going to see Kate if you have any questions.

  • Jell

The lifts in this place are absolutely shocking! The are slow and seems to stop every level. We waited 10 mins on level 3 for a lift. Couldn't use escalator due to pushchair. Then when it finally got to us it was full! People in the lower levels had got in to go for a ride all the way to the top. Then when it eventually came back again all the people on L3 filled out and were all going to the car park. In total it took 21 minutes from calling the lift at L3 to getting it on P2. An absolute joke!

  • Andy Gard

Just want to thank Matt in Fridge Freezers / Electricals. We were very overwhelmed with the number of models and different features available. He patiently took his time explaining everything and answering all our questions in a professional and courteous manner. We can't thank him enough for his service. As a representative of John Lewis Kingston, he is the reason why we keep coming back to shop there. Thank you very much for your help yesterday. It was very much appreciated. Andy & Helen.

  • Ali Hazell

Today I asked a member of staff (who was busy adjusting shelves) the price of a frozen cheesecake! He immediately helped me and asked how I had found my shopping experience and if there was anything else he could help me with. I said that I found shopping in the store a total delight and always had from the day the store opened. He was the Manager of Waitrose apparently- he is brilliant and has the most incredible personal skills and soo perfect for John Lewis

  • KSC2018

John Lewis in Kingston is a great place to shop for all your home and lifestyle needs. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the store is well-stocked with a wide variety of products. I recently bought a new sofa from John Lewis, and I'm really happy with it. The quality is excellent, and the delivery service was prompt and efficient. I would definitely recommend John Lewis to anyone looking for high-quality products and excellent customer service.

I took my kids for Saturday lunch and got pleasantly surprise that children's meal is free when an adult spent £10, so in this times that's is a✨️star +. The restaurant is clean, the food flavory and tasty, the beef pie with cabbage side is delicious. Korean pork with rice also very nice and vegetables curry with rice also nice and creamy. My younger son had fish and chips and it was a good size and good flavour.

  • S S

Really sad to share this - every time I go in, I’m racially profiled badly and treated rudely by staff even when purchasing over the value of £100 at one go. I’m treated so so badly and had security following me due to the colour of my skin. It’s disgusting. As far as I’m concerned, the sooner this place shuts its doors the better, and I doubt it will be that long. It represents everything backward and wrong from the dregs of yesteryear.

  • Spike Mclarrity

I love John Lewis, we have shopped here for many years. Fabulous place to get presents/gifts for weddings, birthdays, or for some other special occasion. It's spacious and has a fabulous cafe as well as waitros in the basement, good parking facilities. Generally a place to actually hang out and shop till you drop. Even though its big, it's still has the personal touch. We managed to buy a new bed today.. Phew.. Now wait on its delivery.

  • F Pretorius

Bought a new iMac which died 4 months later. They took 3 weeks to fix it and could not give me a loan machine. Thus I had to buy new mac because I use it for work. I hand it in inside the original packaging with the extra travel box. Including all the extras. When collecting they bring ONLY the mac in a plastic bag. Without anything else. Worst service ever. If ever I buy again, I’ll buy straight from Mac store...

  • Deborah Miles

I took my elderly mother for a personal styling appointment with Nevin, at the Kingston store, yesterday - what a wonderful experience! She was attentive, caring and her clothing selections showed complete understanding of the sort of outfit mum was looking for; she couldn't do enough to help. We were very happy with our purchases and couldn't have asked for a better experience. I would thoroughly recommend

  • Joe Miller

We came into John Lewis today to buy a Dyson airwrap hair styler, we waited for around 5 minutes before we saw anyone who worked there. We then asked if we could buy one & the girl said she didn’t work in that department & would find someone to help us. A few minutes later she returned & said someone was on there way. We waited for at least 5 more minutes & no one showed up. No wonder profits are down!

If your looking for advice and to purchase appliances for your kitchen in John Lewis kingston store, I cannot recommend a lovely sales lady called Nina enough, she is the absolute best. We saw a Nina a few weeks back to get some advice on some appliances and then today to purchase, she could not have been more helpful. Thank you Nina for all your help and advice, you are an asset to John Lewis :)

  • Switch Nails London

Rude staff, accusing me of “opening drawers” even I wasn’t! Despite this incident I bought few things, still did not receive welcoming shopping experience at John Lewis Kingston. In addition to that, I wasn’t been able to try things on as their both fitting rooms were closed. Will never comeback or recommend this place. There are much nicer shopping centres to go to where staff actually care.

  • Maggie Jones

In the tech department I could only see Apple products so I asked the assistant if they sold Type C USB charging cables for Android phones. She took me to a display of accessories and walked away. All the accessories were for iPhone. I then asked another assistant for help but he said he about to leave the floor, all the other assistants were busy. I gave up and went to another store.

  • C. E. King Limited

Nice Waitrose’s hidden in the basement of John Lewis. Wide selection of good quality food with a young and friendly staff. Parking in the underground car park is convenience and free on Thursday’s after 18:00. Just a word of caution on the carpark it can be a little tight if you have a large car. You will see this from the paintwork scrapings on many of the walls and support pillars.

  • John Davies

On the day I visited my friend had free prosecco and a goody bag for some ladies' make up promotion they were doing. I sorted out my glasses at the in store optician which I've been using for a few years now. Very professional and great selection of frames and often good price promos. Loads of underground parking and an in-store Waitrose so a go-too place in Kingston.

  • Jenny Evgenia Grinblo

Updated: since becoming a parent I’ve been particularly impressed with the parents room, located by the baby section. Great facilities for feeding and changing. A real treat from John Lewis for mums and dads. 2020: Gorgeous huge John Lewis with super friendly staff. Great selection of products and brands, beauty treatments and facilities. Clean toilets.

  • 爱丽丝TalkingMoney

The female staff at Tom Ford perfume section was very rude. I asked for paper to spray perfume on to try out, she ignored me. When i asked again, she told me to wait as she needs to serve another customer, but the other customer was just trying out the perfume herself. Obviously i was racially profiled and treated poorly because of this.

  • Charles Wallace

They just get worse and worse. On 3 items I attempted to purchase over the past year the specifications on their website were incorrect. Their web chat seems never available, and their , Customer Services people appear to be all overseas with very limited knowledge of anything. John Lewis used to be so good, now I'm giving up on them.

  • Anisha Singh

Love the store. We were trying to buy a mattress and found the staff unhelpful. However, we ended up with what we liked and the in-store ordering process was smooth. The delivery folks were great too. 4 stars with the caveat that you should do your own research and go in knowing what you want - don't rely on getting advice from staff.

  • Tony Tudor

Any particular reason, at the launch of your Summer sale, when u expect an increased footfall in your department store, for you to keep the a/c system switched off and most of the changing rooms closed? Are you trying to keep people in, or just get rid of them as quick as possible? Retail industry is getting better by the day …..

  • Tinomia Gradidge

From the time you enter this store you are transported to shopping paradise. There is true abundance here with all the quality. I could not believe the variety of shopping options all under one roof. From clothes to kitchen appliances and furniture to haberdashery items. This is definitely a one stop for all your needs.

  • Elizabeth Phuller

Had a personal shopper experience and am so pleased. The stylist was professional and discussed what I might like and then chose some colours and styles which i would never have chosen for myself. I have had so many compliments for the couple of outfits i bought. Will be back in September for a winter wardrobe refresh.

  • Dekan Hamaamin

Oh wow what amazing place, it's really wonderful i went there just for like and comment hhhh no share, it looks like a heaven, They everything anyone needs, but you have to search for along time, it's a huge place, and maybe you get lost yourself you can't come outside from the same door you went through. …

  • Racquel Anthony

I went into Dior and Chanel beauty! I had the best time I forgot the name of the lady in Chanel, she took her time and was so helpful! In Dior the sales rep was Kate! She’s definitely on her A game and I was very impressed ! Not only is she gorgeous but knowledgeable about all the products!

  • Natasha

Overall the staff are really pleasant and my experience was not bad. But their gift wrapping section was shambles and also refused to wrap an item I had purchased in the Waitrose downstairs despite this being a John Lewis partner company and located in the same store! Ridiculous!

  • Linda Oconnor

My sister visited from abroad and we had a meal in The Place to Eat in John Lewiis, Kingston we had the fish and chips and it was delicious. For a store restaurant she was very impressed I've eaten there before and knew the service was good and efficient and staff were friendly.

Having been to Kingston university 2000 to 2003, I like going to Kingston for old time sake and show kids around. I always come for my hand lotions and candles though we have one John Lewis in Sheffield and I live in Rotherham. Coffee and chocolate cake. Keep it up. Xx …

  • Coughin Dog

A great shopping experience and excellent value for money. Purchased several items online from a wedding list for a friend's wedding, and everything was so easy and straight forward, and wrapping service also included. Very happy shopper & love John Lewis. ❤☮ …

  • Helder Rodrigues de Araujo

Popped in here yesterday with family to swap out a faulty piece of tech. As it was close to lunchtime we decided to grab a bite to eat at the restaurant located within. Food was really good and very reasonable price wise too! Will definitely consider this again.

  • Sithara Gunasinghe

Excellent service provided by Sabrina. She put me at ease with her friendly manner and I was given full details of the treatments available at the clinic. She answered all my questions and recommended products. I will recommend the service to my friends

  • Tolu Oluwagbemiga

It was quiet, colourful, the candles smelt great and they came up with an amazing idea - a quality street pop up stall where you can choose the chocolates you want in your tin so there won't be a rogue one left in the bottom of the tin every year!

  • Annamaria Venturella

Good place to shop. Well stocked but the small sizes seem to run out so perhaps they should stock more items in size 8 than 18. My only complaint is that staff are too pushy and annoying. No, I do not need help please just let me browse in peace.

  • cpupdates1

The staff is unhelpful tried to call through customer service the staff at Kingston closed the case without resolution and put on the notes case resolved! What a shame as the online service seems to be so good. Very disappointing and frustrating

  • Angela Wallhead

Excellent shop with lots of top quality goods and clothes. Staff are very helpful and polite and in Kingston you also have a Waitrose shop too. Everything you need for the home and also cosmetics, haberdashery, and jewellery. Well worth a visit.

  • Roger Finch

Buggy or disabled persons nightmare. The lifts are usually bad when they're all working but when there's 2 out of service and the working ones aren't doing what they're suppose to be doing, it makes for a very unpleasant shopping experience.

  • Grisel Cruz

My mum went to buy something from the ground floor and the lady in the till was extremely rude to her, she didn’t even offer her a carry bag when she spend over £50. She was a miserable lady doesn’t have any clue of customer service at all!

  • Adrian Smith

My wife went to John Lewis to get a quote for a kitchen. The Irish chap who was in charge was very rude and told us that he couldn’t possibly do us a quote right now because the house hadn’t been built. We told him that we needed to know

  • Jyk Wong

Superb department store - love their selection of homeware, clothing and linen. There's a cafe too, with lovely river views. We had tea and a selection of cakes. Walk into the basement and you'll find a well-stocked Waitrose supermarket.

  • Col Bourne

Awful stock control, poor customer service from some key sales staff. Some lovely people who work there, but some are downright rude, incompetent and unhelpful. Why would I take time and effort to pay for goods when it's so difficult,

  • Nicole Massie

Went to buy some wireless headphones. Didn’t have a clue as to what I wanted. The man who helped me was patient, amazing, informative and I ended up with some headphones that covered all my needs. Will definitely be back shopping there

  • Tim Husain

Good shop, it's a shame they stopped doing price match as that was even better. Reasonable prices and good quality products. Big store with pretty much everything you could need. All main departments plus nice cafe overlooking river.

  • Rhiannon

Really great, large John Lewis - the floors are well organised for shopping for anything you could need from tech, material, clothes, etc. Really brilliant beauty section where you can try perfumes and get help for the makeup.

  • Suhail Mir

Thanks to Helen, Verity Jane and Adrian, whose creative and discerning service improved my customer experience with J. L. Absolutely demonstrated their dedication to fulfilling customer needs and with such flawless charm.

  • CASSII

Had such lovely service from Kate at the Dior counter today I had to leave a review. She helped me find exactly what I needed and made some recommendations without being pushy. I will be back for my top ups!

  • S

I have found John Lewis very competitive over the years. There are changes in the horizon along with a new management styles and younger staff members, however prices and quality remain true to the JL name.

  • Mo

Excellent service, great products and good facilities. Two year warranty on electrical goods is a bonus. I like the Cafe. They also provide a room for community events free of charge. Highly recommended.

  • Neil Richards

Can take a while to get into the car park. Went there as JL is one of a very very small number of large stores that allows dogs. Picked up some bargains in the sale and had a quick walk along the river.

  • Francesca Simon

Don't choose this company to install a kitchen. Dangerous electrical work was completed and now my cooker isn't working. John Lewis expect me to pay for a survey before they will do anything about it

  • Scott Beverley-Perkins

Terrible customer service Waited 20 minutes in the children’s shoe department. One person serving, no numbering system No wonder this company is struggling Gave up and left as many others also did

Big Thanks to Turkan for going beyond and helping me and my daughter choose our party dress !! The store as usual is a shoppers paradise for all needs from dresses to furniture and electronics !!

  • Danver Zhu

There are many products, but the cleaness and tidiness was terrible. Not helpful staff, long wait for checkout. NO AC ON HOTTEST DAYS!! Appauling! Other branches like is WestField are way better.

I had lunch there, chickpeas potatoes and coconut curry, it was barely curry and a plate full of rice.. Very disappointed.. My mum had fish and chips and it was half a fish..

A nice large department store with good parking and a bit unusual floor design. As for every John Lewis you get good service and plenty of things to buy here.

  • Nigel Owen

The most haphazard layout of a store you'll ever find. Not obvious or easy how to get from one side of it to the other and/or too and from the car park!

Staff always polite and helpful. Those in specialist areas like haberdashery really know their stuff. Very pleasing shopping atmosphere.

Various brands, almost good numbers of different things, from bags to perfume or makeup….and interesting n espresso on the 2nd floor

  • bobica radu

Well organised place. Plenty of good articles. Not a shop for all the pockets (for some items), but a shop to browse and see ideas.

  • Donald Flohr

Unpleasantly hot and humid in store (must be so much worse for the staff) and canteen not well stocked (presumably not the norm).

  • Jonathan Hazan

Good spacious store with decent range and well implemented social distancing measures, although not all customers following them.

  • Goodness Ibekwe

Amazing! Proud to say I love their candle collection, diffusers, kid games, book works, gift cards, just say the more …

I like shopping at John Lewis but why is there no provision for safe parking for cyclists in their enormous car park?
