save your money. me and my parents did the tour, which included a tour of the museum and a “walking tour” all about voodoo. turns out the “museum” is a cramped 2 room full of fake voodoo artifacts and a whole bunch of places to give offerings to these statues of “gods”. the whole place just looks thrown together and incredibly unprofessional. the tour guide, on the other hand, was the worst part. he kept us standing in the first room for 30 minutes preaching about christianity and talking more about himself than anything else. once we finally got outside, this man took us down the street and started explaining to us how “shotgun” houses work, and where they came from. after that, he started telling us about his favorite gumbo spot, of which he took us to and made us step inside to look at how cheap the menu is… what this has to do with voodoo, i have no idea. eventually he took us to to marie laveaus house, which isn’t even her house anymore?? they advertise seeing her actual house, but it’s just the “general location” her house was in. at this point, me and my family were already tired of this guy, as he kept making sexual innuendos, talking about his boss (aka his wife), and explaining the history of all of the buildings we passed. once we got to the armstrong national park, he was in full “black history” mode, showing us congo square and telling us how old the different oak trees were. the only genuine question i asked during the whole tour, he couldn’t even answer?? i thought the tour was going to go on for a while longer, since we were several blocks from the museum. however, he dropped what he was doing, started preaching about the importance of tipping (we gave him a tip, just so he would shut up), and told us the tour was over. granted, he asked us if we needed directions back, but we were too tired of this man at this point to willingly listen to him talk anymore. moral of the story, do not waste your money on this tourist trap. it is absolutely not worth any money. find something better to do with your time.

The museum consists of basically two small rooms full of "artifacts" which seemed more like someone bought out a 3rd Planet store that was closing down. Some of it made absolutely no sense like railroad spikes and a piece of model train track, with no context or explanation. We paid extra for the guided tour. Us and about 30 other people were crammed into the room where you literally couldn't move, and some of the people started feeling feint and had to leave and sit down. There was absolutely no way you could see the displays because of all the people. There was 30 minutes in one room that really turned into more of a commercial to go to church than learning much about the history... In fact the guide really couldn't answer any of the more pointed questions that one guy kept asking about. After 30 minutes we switched to the second room for another 30 commercial. I learned next to nothing, but then we were headed on a walking tour so I figured that would be interesting. Nope! We walked around for several blocks looking at New Orleans architecture. After half an hour of that we skipped out when the group turned a corner. We went back to the museum to actually look at the displays which took us maybe 15 minutes to read though. Save your money, just look it up on Wikipedia.

First the definition from PBS: Vodou originated in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo) and derives from the Fon word for "God" or "Spirit." Other accurate spellings include Vodun, Vodoun, but never voodoo, the sensationalist and derogatory Western creation. This museum is neat and great place if you know anything about Vodou. It’s basically 2 rooms filled with artifacts. The lady who worked there if you want guided tour and booked please call because some cancel and may have openings. I only related Vodou to evil but learned at a recent tour that they have one spiritual God. That it was never meant for evil but to help people. And that’s why I wanted to visit this museum. It’s located in heart of French Quarter so be prepared to hunt for parking space. I parked across N. Rampart on Ursulines Ave, it was .7 miles away. It was a nice walk and you see most of Bourbon St. They have nice African gifts and some from Haiti. Vodou dolls etc. And you can have psychic readings. They also have paid tours which wound probably be much better than self guided if like me don’t know much about it. I highly recommend visiting if in the area.

We would have loved to tour this museum. But the lady running the counter was on the phone. We waited a while (it seemed like maybe her credit card reader or something was down and she was trying to fix it). After 10 minutes or so of not even being acknowledged, we chose to leave (as did at least 3 other couples I saw). I hope she got it fixed, and I understand the frustration, but had she at least acknowledged us with an "I'll be right with you," we would have been content to wait. **UPDATE: Added 2 stars since we were able to get in on our most recent trip. Some of the exhibits were interesting. The place in general was very cluttered and somewhat chaotic, with no real organization for the pieces. The front hall where you enter was very narrow, and difficult to get in and out of if people were stopped to look at the plaques and pictures on the wall. I do love that they let you take pictures inside, and the lady at the front desk this time was very nice and greeted us immediately. If you're interested in the voodoo history of the area, it's worth the price of admission to go in and have a look, but dont expect to be blown away.

Absolutely LOVED this place. Wonderful woman that takes money and gives you a guide will explain anything you need explained. She's a voodoo practitioner, knowledgeable, and personable. She spent time explaining things to my oldest daughter. She wanted to visit this place badly, and the lady there directed her on which candle to get for what she needed. My oldest is still talking about how much she loved her. The inside of the museum is small but covered in items with detailed explanations as to what they are. The painting of Marie Lueveax is incredible. Interestingly enough you are allowed to take all the photos you want, but many of mine did not come out and were incredibly blurred. I did not have this problem anywhere else and feel perhaps there is a message from the spirit world that I need to receive. We felt this place was well worth the minimal admission cost, and will return next we visit NOLA.

I’ve been here now twice, first time alone and the second time I bought my husband with me. It’s a lot to read, so take your time. You can take pictures without flash. Which is major! They have some very old alters inside too, that you can leave donations of money, rum, cigars, just imagine your own home alters if you have any! So do bring your parchment paper and pen! Be respectful, share knowledge if you can, which I did when a woman asked why things are left on alters. I explained the importance of our ancestors and giving them what they had on earth is what they want on the other side. Great place!

This place has a lot of voodoo artifacts crammed into 3 very small rooms & a short hallway. It feels more like someone’s personal collection, akin to a horder’s. To get the most out of it, you really need to budget more time & get very close to read ‘em tiny info-tags next to the displays, which could be difficult to do with all other visitors elbowing each other. I ended up taking a lot of closeup pics of the displays, so I wouldn’t block the other visitors & I could review all the details later. For $10+/-, it’s worth it, if you are into it all.

Ok while this place is only two rooms, if you're a reader, there's enough to keep you busy for about half an hour to an hour. This museum is one of a kind and that's partially why I visited. Inside you're transported to a different world that's often misunderstood. Unless you're a voodoo expert, you're likely to have many misconceptions about the religion and culture surrounding voodoo (including myself). I highly recommend this museum as a place to educate one's self on voodoo and to stop looking at it like it's all dark magic or whatever. It's just like any other religion (plus or minus some very interesting tidbits ). Go check it out!

  • sydneysaurus

I loved everything inside the building! The items featured the ranged from art that was created for the museum to old remnants from voodoo alters long gone. I want according there to be so much information posted around the place but I found it very informational and interesting. Only downside was that it was very crowded and people were often shoulder to shoulder trying to read the same small pages. I felt a little rushed by just patrons so I ended up taking pictures of the plaques so I could read everything later. The owner was great, she welcomed everyone in and didn't mind answering questions or sharing a funny story.

  • Chelsea Mooyoung

The “museum” is 2 rooms in the back of the shop. They do not regulate how many people go back at a time. We were able to enter with no wait but had to wait a while for people to move/finish reading. Since it’s a small space it gets crowded quick and there is a lot to read so it was frustrating. They should regulate how many people are allowed back at a time. A lot of the stuff on display seemed very touristy. It’s a small fee to get in but just be prepared to wait in the back to actually move around.

It was an amazing experience! I don't know anything about voodoo but entering this place I could feel a different energy. It is composed of photos, sounds, statues, various ritual items and much, much information about the culture and its precursors. There are no long queues to enter, but as the museum is very small, it has a small maximum capacity of up to 08 people at a time, if I'm not mistaken. I recommend it to all curious and knowledge lovers. Culture is never too much!

We took a guide tour for $36, and we spent an hour in the museum, then she walked with us for another 2 and a half hours to show us some spot in the French Quarter. It was a Historic Voodoo tour, but for about two-thirds of the time, I thought I was in the Historic Slave and how the system was against Africa American. We were asked not to take pictures of the tour.

The museum was a bit small, it almost feels like your stepping on everybody, but not too bad at all. As first time visitors, my girlfriend and I enjoyed the artifacts and information. Btw I have to say the cashier was so funny, I wish I could have gotten her name, very down to earth and hilarious, made me and my girlfriend continuously laugh. *Tips for my fellow Googlers* Parking is a bit difficult $8.00 charge Very small place Small shopping collection but worth it cash/ credit/debit accepted!!! Keep your kids close as things can be knocked over. Enjoy the Museum

We were in visiting New Orleans and this museum was on our list to visit! There was a small wait cause we were a large group. Entry fee was pretty reasonable. So much to look at but it was very small. We were pretty crowded and kept bumping into other people. Wish the cashier would have given us a heads up. For this reason we felt rushed… we did also shop for souvenirs, they do have a small selection in the entrance to browse through.

There is definitely a lot of great stuff to be seen here. Very informative, eye-opening, and fascinating. Including relics fashioned from human remains. The entire interior is extremely claustrophobic, though, and there is no restroom. The staff are all knowledgeable and passionate, and I love that. The tour is very good, but it tends to stray away from the subject of Voodoo and focus on the mistreatment of African people.

The word museum is a little misleading here. It's super small and definitely not wheelchair accessible. You get really cozy with the strangers there visiting. There is a decent amount of voodoo history information however it's difficult to take it all in because your packed in like sardines. Kinda creepy but cool. 1 room just has altars, most of the information is in a hallway only wide enough for one person. The other room has random voodoo stuff in it. If you've got a free 30 minutes with nothing else to do it's worth the squeeze

  • Chelsea Hopkins

Great little museum that strikes a balance between the history, lore, and New Orleans culture of Voodoo. It didn’t rely on sensationalism or Hollywood tropes, which I appreciated. If I had to give a critique, I would say the gift shop is quite gimmicky. Would be nice to have more books about voodoo history and culture and things used in practice. But ultimately I would recommend this museum!

It's $5 per adult to enter the museum which really is just 2 rooms filled with various voodoo altars. If you have the patience to read then there's a plethora of voodoo information to be learned here. A bit of warning though, air can be a bit heavy here as ventilation is almost none existent. I felt faint while here so I couldn't really take my time inside the tight enclosed museum. Also not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia. Other than that its a great quick stop to get your fix of voodoo history when in NOLA.

Very interesting place with a lot of good information about the history of Voodoo in New Orleans. They have both a self guided tour for $10 and a guided tour for $36. We did the self guided tour and were given a great introduction by Madame Cinnamon Black along with a bit of history on Marie Laveau. The museum and shop are both small, but there is still a lot to see. Perfect quick stop for people looking for touristy attractions.

Meh. It was okay. Very small and quite dark/dusty/dirty. Interesting stuff inside but the presentation is just a mess. Stuff everywhere. You bump into others. No space. Woman at the front desk was a little rude. May be just by nature, not sure. Gift shop was more gimmicky than authentic feeling. And quite expensive. I learned a lot so I would recommend but just be prepared to not be wowed.

Creepy and filled with random stuffs! Honestly, I am not so sure how legitimate this place is. I didn’t get the museum vibe but more of a I just got scammed vibe. There were a lot of random stuffs like pictures and items that didn’t belong. I felt like there were many altars and people just left random things on the altars. The music and the look of the place were pretty creepy as well. Definitely not worth the money to go through it, but if it is a one dollar admission or free then why not?

  • Liz Deutermann

This place is on the list of top museums to visit in NOLA for a reason. It's fun, kitschy experience worth having but full disclosure— it’s less of a museum and more like a wander through your kooky relative’s attic. Not great if you're trying to socially distance, just so you know. One less star because the poorly written placards are charming but placed in a way that makes a lot of them impossible to read. Also, someone *needs* to go through that place with a duster, STAT. Yikes.

  • S Gilmour

i enjoyed my visit to this museum. there was a LOT of information packed into two small rooms. although there is a lot to see and read, i think was expecting it to be bigger? there weren’t too many people when we went, but if there had been then it would have been hard to access all the placards with information. was an interesting stop nonetheless!

The museum is small but packed with artifacts, art, and information. Most items are well labeled with descriptions and photos that relate them to the history or local relevance. You can easily spend an hour or two looking at all of the items. This is a cultural and educational display of the local voodoo rituals and noted local individuals.

It was okay...something to do if you're bored...not with $10 for something you can see in 10 minutes. Basically they turn you loose for a self guided walk in two or three small rooms which are cram packed with "voodoo" artifacts with no real background information on them other than "this is a voodoo idol" type descriptions. When I think of the word museum I think there is going to be historical background involved and there doesn't seem to be much included.

  • Jason “Jay B”

I picture this place to be more presentable to the customers but it seems like majority of the artifacts for show have been tampered with people adding money bills/notes, pictures, coins and random notes. It covers the actual artifact and draws the attention how messy it is instead of trying to focus with the artificial item is about. Its very small place just a heads up. Here are some decent pics of a few items I took. I wouldnt come back here again.

  • Matthew Haigh (Mortalmatt)

Amazingly interesting museum. I didn’t really know anything about voodoo culture before going in, but I left feeling like my eyes had been opened. I learned so much from the different exhibits and there is plenty of information to read and help understand it all. The museum is small, but packed with many different things.

This is not a museum. It is a two roomed tourist trap with a "tour guide" who is flat-out incorrect about basic historical facts and spends most of his time preaching at you and telling you to be Christian and follow the bible. This is the most unprofessional establishment I've ever seen. Extremely disappointed.

Two rooms and a hallway are packed with a variety of voodoo objects. There is a lot of information to read on the walls and on the papers they give you to carry as you tour the museum. The small gift shop, which you can visit without paying to enter the museum, has a small assortment of books and trinkets to buy. The small size and exceptionally cramped quarters when touring the museum are the reason for the three star raiting.

  • Tracy Sperling

This is an excellent stop to learn the history of Voodoo and Hoodoo. It explains rituals, dolls, Doctors and Queens. The stories of the Voodoo influencers are enthralling. Soo many objects to look at and learn. The gift shop has books and souvenirs to take away to remember your day. Definitely worth the stop.

Small and cramped, but definitely worth the visit. A lot of history packed into a tiny place. Lots of artifacts from voodoo long ago. Cinnamon Black, one of the Voodoo priestesses their is very knowledgeable and always willing to help and answer questions. We bought a Voodoo doll and she even performed a Voodoo ritual on it for us for no extra charge! Love this place and will always visit it when we are in NOLA.

A great stop in or drop by location. Very tight on hallways and space but maneuverable. On the day I visited people dropped by. The space is filled with expressions of dark and black magic associated with voodoo and New Orleans culture. There are items to buy that are unique and interesting.

It was a very interesting tour. The museum is really small, but you learn a lot about Voodoo culture and clarifies many misconception about it. If you are not open minded, or are very religious, you might feel uncomfortable inside. I'm Christian (mormon), and I confess I felt a little overwhelming at first, but as African-latina (Caribbean) this visit was important to me even If I don't practice the religion.

  • Kianna J

Smaller than I anticipated, but for $10, it's worth the money. There's some very interesting artifacts and reading material throughout, but if you're among other groups while in the museum, be prepared to get super hot and stuffy. Claustrophobic beware! Still, it's worth checking out

Even though this was a smaller Museum, this Museum was very interesting with a lot of facts. It was very interesting seeing how many people went through and gave gifts to the spirits, and you can read all about what the spirit was and what each item masks were artifact was used for. I'm not one to believe in this stuff, but it was very interesting and I would go back again. For $7, you need to see this.

Intresting place, a little corny VERY small. I gave it two starts because the place is 2 tiny rooms but worst thing is theres no bathroom. Its like going to someones cramped house full of dusty stuff but then they wont let you use the bathroom. The bathroom they recommend is blocks away and that place wont let you use the bathroom without a purchase. I included 2 pictures of the best displays I saw

  • Kiara Boggs

Has 2 rooms and narrow hallway, but it is packed with information and interesting items to read about. Great little stop, and it was extra cool because it is much more than a museum; it has active offerings and usage of the space. It is really neat to see and experience the vibe.

A HIDDEN GEM It’s easy to miss if you’re just walking by, but the Historic Voodoo Museum is well worth the price of admission if you’re interested in really learning about Voodoo and it’s true practices, history, etc. Everything is well labeled and explained, and the number of real historic artifacts in what seems like just a little shop is impressive. One of many highlights of our trip.

  • J R

It was cool to see but it’s not much of a “museum” but more of a hallway with two tiny rooms. Very very cramped and there are other museums that cost less with more to see. Don’t get me wrong, there was cool stuff in there but it’s definitely not worth the money

While there are tons of small voodoo goods in that place , it’s really hard to consider it’s a museum - feels like that word was putted there for attraction. It’s literally 2 rooms and you can finish it off in as little as 10-15 minutes. More than 5 people will make this place too congested . I’m not too disappointed because price was 10$ per ticket - so it’s not too big of a deal...

I visited the museum in November during my trip to New Orleans. It is a small place but full of information and artifacts related to Voo Doo. There basically two room and a smalls hallway. The room at the end of the hallway is full of altars and information about who the altars are dedicated to. The next room is dedicated to dolls, ceremony, and rituals. I would definitely return

Though it looks small this particular shop hosts some excellent history and Voodoo wonders. The artifact collection was excellent. If you have time learning about Voodoo and what it stands for and how it is commonly misunderstood. The history is intriguing

It is more like an apartment where someone had collected about of stuff that happens to be about woodoo. However there is a lot of inform about woodoo and there are a lot of things connected to woodoo to look at. Do I regret going there, no. But do not think this is a museum as in the literal word but more of an exebition on woodoo that you were invited to in New Orleans.

Nice little museum and shop if you want to learn a bit about voodoo history. Note that this is a very small museum and not necessarily a professional museum experience. Seems like something put together by a couple individuals that wanted to share more about the meaning behind Voodoo. If you go in knowing what your expecting I think this is a good experience.

  • Nithya Reddy

The place is soo small, we went on the smithsonian museum day and it was full of people and felt Claustrophobic, the lady at the front entrance was not friendly at all and was very rude. The place had history of voodoo but did not get a chance to look with a lot of crowd. Need to visit during off hours to actually be able to see something there.

Deeply educational and fascinating. Woman at the front desk is incredibly knowledgeable. They accept cash/card, and offer two kinds of tours. 1- in house, under 10 bucks and self guided. 2- trip to cemetary. guided, around 25 dollars. If you want to know the difference between voodoo and hoodoo, you'll have to take the guided tour!

It was whitewashed and under-informed. The museum left out multiple historical components which influenced voodoo culture (for example, the influence of slavery, colonization, and Catholicism were not mentioned).

For my life, I could not understand what our tour guide was saying. He speaks clearly but in verse?? Jumps from one subject to another... the museum is tiny, but the vibe is dense, so legit things are stored in there The tour on foot was ok. If you skip it you won't miss anything

Love love love!! It’s everything. Do wish it was bigger. It’s too much good stuff for it to be so small but it’s a lot so enduring & taking all the small things in is cool. Also love that they allow photo taking. Some museums are super picky about it. I love it. I have memories forever from here. & I would go again just to!

Historic shop, for getting reading and learning the history of voodoo culture. If your lucky the queen maybe there as well. Guided tours at 12, I would recommend showing up early. Shop can get full.

Very small and very full. The museum is two rooms and a hall behind a gift shop, but every inch of the walls are covered. Hard to navigate with only a few other people inside, but well worth it.

We had the place to ourselves when I took my son. It's an incredible place to visit and learn more about Marie Laveau and the history of Voodoo. If you're lucky, you'll also meet the Voodoo Priestess Madam Cinnamon Black

Pint sized but packs a cultural punch! Loved my tarot reading from Frank. But the museum itself was so immersive and educational. An essential New Orleans history deep dive.

A little disappointing. Lots of information. But I expected more out of it. It's only 2 rooms that are jam packed. Too many people in such a little space to really enjoy it.

We paid $5 bucks entrance fee. Frankly, it was a tiny museum (or basically a house with 2 rooms). The informationis good and the atmosphere is totally voodoo-like, but other than that, it is worth the 15 mins not more that you will spend. I wish it was a bit bigger with more display.

  • Anna Aebli

Such an Incredible little museum. I bought tickets on the spot, it wasn’t to busy but It’s tight quarters as you work your way through the rooms to be prepared. They have a great gift shop as you enter & exit for an whimsical needs/souvenir’s. I will definitely be back!! More

Went to a few museums in New Orleans and this was my favorite. It was clean and well put together. We didn’t have a wait to enter but it was on the smaller side and filled up quickly.

Lots of different items to look at. A small brochure as your guide. Two rooms and a small hallway that exhibited relics from the past. Can be a bit cramped inside with the Overflow of people. Other than that, small interesting Museum to look at. $7 cover charge.

It was a little let down from what people were saying it was a must to go to see the oldest voodoo spot to visit. The place is very small so make sure not to bring bulky book bags with you. The little shop is pricey but if u want a memory u can get what u want.

  • Lance Lewis

Interesting place to learn a little about Voodoo and it's history. It is a very small place that has a ton of stuff jammed into two tiny rooms. At $7 a person it feels a bit expensive for what it is. However, I learned some interesting things about voodoo.

This place was so informative. With all the artwork and history all over the rooms, I feel like it's a must-see while visiting NOLA.

This place was really neat. Be sure to bring cash to leave here. I believe it's supposed to symbolize an offering for your wishes you make there. I learned new things and some things will creep you out a bit. Definitely worth visiting for a tourist.

  • Wendy Schutz

The best part of our trip, hands down. The price to do the self guided tour through the museum was only $5 and you could take pictures. It was very informative, very authentic and very unique. We stayed a while and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

  • Justin Rogers-Cooper

Educational, fun, authentic layers in this one of a kind space. Lots to learn and observe and some genuinely unique objects loaded with significance. Terrific gift shop with locally made crafts. Touristy, but not in an obvious way. Singular vibe.

  • Sara Klein

I wasn't even able to see the museum. Very crowded and small entry way that also doubled as a gift shop. After waiting 10 minutes to get to the front I was informed that I could not do a self guided tour for at least an hour since a guided

The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is a captivating and enlightening destination that undeniably deserves its prestigious five-star rating. This unique museum offers a profound and immersive exploration of the rich history and cultural

  • Bradley Wyly

I don't really see this a museum per say. I think that it is neat that you can see some voodoo items here but I feel like it is more like a cash grab for tourist I would say it was decent but there are many better "museums" in New Orleans.

  • Claire Reynolds

$10/person to see the indoor exhibits. They're all packed into two small rooms and one hallway, but there's so much art and information that you could easily spend hours reading it all. I loved that they allowed pictures so I could take

  • JB Courvoisier

Today it was $5 dollars to get in day. So, we paid our $5 bucks and checked out the Voodoo Museum. It is two rooms of curios, voodoo dolls and some interesting history. I wish this place had a bigger space to display all of it's curios,

Great little museum with a lot packed into two rooms. The AC wasn't working so it was very hot and humid so we couldn't stay long but the owner gave us a discount on admission because of it. Very informative and beautiful artifacts.

Question: How do you make a two room museum into an enjoyable two hour experience? Answer: Take the walking tour with Nate. He'll educate you, entertain you, and best of all enlighten you to the ways of Voodoo.

Very informative and well versed in the history of Voodoo, the practitioners, the different gods/Loa and origins. There is also a gift shop with various charms and goods you can buy for yourself or loved ones.

  • Alexandra Dowling

Very small, but worth it for the price!!! Chock full of of information and altars to honor goddesses, gods, saints, erzulies, etc. Had a lot of fun learning! Would definitely recommend for the experience.

  • VJ

Probably should have set my expectation lower. This museum is only two small rooms but interesting stuff. $5 to get in and you could probably read and see all stuff within 30 mins so planning accordingly!

  • G Tessie

Only one floor and some info. I was doing it for the wife. Im not a believer and am not tipping and this store looks more like quakery to get you to leave dollar bill everywhere than a museum. More

  • George Forgan-Smith

Simple museum with many alters demonstrating the practice of Voodoo Hoodoo and other rights. I found it interesting. Some good images as well. It’s not huge however it’s a well curated collection.

  • CaliGirlBailey

Very cool exhibit. Not sure on the authenticity but was very interesting and had a lot of history. Great way to fill an hour of your day! They allow all the pictures you want to take.

Interesting place to visit to understand a different culture and history of people who lived New Orleans. It explain that some woodoo ceremony are still in place nowadays.

  • Chris “BostonGreekGeek” Vaxevanis

Interesting place to visit but doesn't have a lot to see. It's basically 2 rooms connected by a short hallway. Not a must see but if you have time it's a nice little stop.
