I've never posted a review before, but the way my family and I were treated in this store was so horrible that I feel compelled to do so. On holiday in Adelaide, we promised our children we would buy each of them a book to read. My wife and I being English teachers also had some books on our wishlist. About 10 seconds after entering the store, the store assistant quickly came over unprovoked to tell my wife that they had expensive books and if my children ruined any we'd be liable to pay; he then took a book off our 5 year old, who had been happily reading it sitting on the floor. His automatic assumption that our children would cause problems is something we have never experienced before. We left the store within minutes and will not be back. We have never felt more uncomfortable in a store in our lives.

One of the (many) great things about this bookshop is you can walk in the door and lose yourself in a newfound world of writers, ideas, history, culture...or you can immediately find what it is you are looking for on a shelf ! This is a great bookshop for researchers - informed staff and good subject classification; a great bookshop for readers--all those great novelists from yesteryear as well as more recent authors -- literary and mass market; plus a wonderful section of kids books! A great adventureland for the young...and young at heart. Conveniently located in Adelaide City Centre --one of our city's treasures, this bookshop!

cute little vintage book store that I didn't know existed. Very expensive though EDITED 02/03/2023 If you want people to leave their bags at the front, maybe invest in some camera or put it behind the counter with you. My Friend got his bag stolen yesterday. Unimpressed EDIT EDIT...Family business, maybe don't sigh so loudly when someone asks for help and you didn't have what the wanted. A Business like this has to survive on customer service and the mother has to work on this

The owner of the book store must be trapped in 2019 because there was no covid sign in, and when I enquired he just told me manual sign in with an unofficial sign in sheet. He was also not wearing a mask which meant when he coughed it went ALL over his shop. The last time I came here was before covid and even then he didn't make me feel very comfortable and welcomed in his store. Not going back anytime soon.

What an amazing book shop I’m visiting Adelaide and just happen to walk past and I ended spending and unintended few hundred as I couldn’t believe how the books that I’ve been looking for years and Benjamin so friendly and helpful had a quick awesome book review and he was in the same page.! My favourite book store in Adelaide. It has a great selection of second hand and new books on any topic or genre you could want and good prices. You could spend a while just looking at all of the display books they have throughout. If you ask nicely you can also pat Oscar the store dog which is the real reason I visit.

O'Connell's is a must for any lover of literature. The store is filled with books that cover every aspect of life and imagination with the subtle sounds of smooth jazz playing in the background. The owner knows where everything is and is super helpful even if you don't know what you want or where to start

Such a pleasure to be in a store where it is so obvious that they love and respect the books they sell. Wonderful customer service and range of books. The friendly and knowledgeable proprietor knew exactly what I was looking for , found me a copy at a very reasonable price. Like MacArthur, I shall return!

  • Freshly Fried-Bacon

Amazing, and interesting range of books here. Pricing from simple little dollar reads, to antique book rarities! Easy to miss, but you don't want to, you can spend hours pacing through the oddities that make up their great collection. Highly recommend setting aside a couple of hours to stop past.

  • Heather Jacobs

Really enjoyed wondering around this beautiful shop full of beautiful books on all different genres and topics. The man who served me (I am sorry I forgot to get your name) was super enthusiastic and happy to chat about books! Looking forward to going back soon!

  • Liv Wilson

Horrible service. The shopkeeper was ridiculous rude to me over trying to buy a book which was one dollar and refused to serve me because I didn't have a coin (sorry but in the digital age we don't all carry cash). Definitely not going there again.

  • Rebecca Fishlock

Probably the best and most well established used bookstore in the city, stocking a truly excellent selection of books people actually want to read! The staff are friendly and helpful, and the general ambience is really nice, basically

One of the, (if not THE) best places to find books for a reasonable price. I found a copy of a A. Camus book that I couldn't find anywhere else. Also found some very nice volumes of Calvin and Hobbes here.

  • Peter Badenoch (GSG)

I gotta say that this bookshop has a variety of popular past time favourite books. The prices are fair because they're priced by the quality and rarity. This place has been amazing. And the staff are friendly.

  • Liona

Plenty of books here to cater to all tastes and interests. It's big and slightly messy so you could spend an hour or so just browsing while listening to jazz. Friendly owner and occasional visits from a dog.

  • Blair Crawford

A treasure house of pre-owned books. O'Connell's is a valued institution of Adelaide's retail sector and along with the Oxfam bookstore near Hutt Street has kept my house cluttered for years.
