Is this Hobart's best kept entertainment secret? I was searching for alternatives to going to the movies (nothing on that interested me much at the time at Village or State) and stumbled across this gem! I had never heard of Rewind Cinema but I'm so glad I have now. A Blues Bros movie fanatic friend couldn't believe it when I said it was on at a cinema! So off we headed, on a cold night, into the unknown. The ticket prices are extremely reasonable and there is a quirky kiosk/bar with wonderful movie memorabilia. It has wonderful traditional popcorn, choc tops, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks (including cocktails). You then step through a small courtyard to the cinema. It is housed in part of a circa 1830s building complex just overflowing with historical and cultural significance. Known as the Orphan Schools and St John's Park Precinct (situated in St. John's Avenue, New Town) it is part of a somewhat dark chapter of Tasmanian history involving institutional "care" of children and other vulnerable people. Anyway, I digress! So you walk into this room which is jam packed with the most eclectic, random collection of quirky older living room furniture. I had so much fun testing out the various couches, sofas and other seats. They even have bean bags! After choosing this fantastic, comfy sofa we threw on a blanket (thoughtfully provided at the door, but the room was a great temperature), started munching on our treats and snuggled in to enjoy the previews! Except they're not, well, they're upcoming movies for the Rewind Cinema, but they were all amazing trailers for movies we grew up with and loved. Each month has a theme and this month is musicals. So before the movie even started we were singing and dancing (in our seat) to Grease, Dirty Dancing, The Commitments, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and more! I have to stress how different this felt from a normal cinema experience. Some people had dressed up with the Blues Bros theme, there were families, couples, groups of friends ... and a great atmosphere of shared nostalgia and respect for the unique experience. Half way through the movie there is an intermission, during which you can top up on drinks or snacks, grab some fresh air or go to the loo. We might have done some or all of these things but the intermission was an episode of Mr Bean (the one where he goes to church). We were transfixed! I never would have expected that fantastic little blast from the past! The movie was amazing. Of course, it was the Blues Brothers! People clapped when it finished! Such a shared sense of a great night out. The owner/manager was outside as we were leaving and was such an interesting person and generously spent ages talking with a group of us about the business, the building and best of all, his upcoming plans for movies. Who doesn't love chatting about their favourite movies with other enthusiastic movie lovers! All we could think about was our next visit! I'm thinking Girls Night Out to watch Dirty Dancing! Going with my friend to one of the huge hits from the 80s and 90s in Action August! Wishing I'd known about it so I could have gone to The Princess Bride, The Life of Brian, The Castle and more. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. They even do private bookings for birthdays, special events, rewards for clients etc. Their website and Facebook page are great with the monthly programs up, plus coming soon listings. I'm so glad I discovered Rewind Cinemas and hope that others find my review helpful. I hope it also helps keep this fantastic venue going, because there aren't enough of these quirky, unique, retro entertainment options left. Thank you Rewind!

Awesome hidden gem more should know about - a retro cinema showcasing the greatest hits of our youth. While anyone can do home cinema or themed movie marathons now, this is about bringing back the fun and atmosphere of the 'good old days' with a like-minded social community, getting out and having a good time together. The eclectic seating and homebrew setup has strong vibes with the OG State Cinema back in ye olde days when they were running quirky on-demand anime and arthouse imports, or the UTAS Centenary Lecture theatre STTNG screenings - there's a really authentic spirit here not found in more commercial settings. I felt a buzz at the cinema I've not felt in a long time. A long time. ...and let's not forget that this is basically (since Cinema 7 gave up on movie marathons and theme features) this is basically the _only_ place you're going to get to see must see retro classics. That in itself makes a no-brainer to attend. It's not platinum level (State) and food and drink can be a little expensive but it's a small cost for the opportunity, if only for few hours to revisit the glories of the past and forget, even if for a short time the horrors of the current timeline. Who knows, you may even find that partner who's also a super-fan of that niche genre. :) Word is out and sessions and selling to capacity almost instantly - get in quick or you may be disappointed. Special mention to the owner for the laid back, friendly and engaging vibes, an absolutely cool dude I would like to thank for making the dream come alive. Congratulations and long may you reign as the king of retro cinema. "I'll be back!"

First timer. The best! The family thoroughly enjoyed ourselves eating popcorn and lounging on a couch. Movie awesome *home alone 2* staff friendly no companion card so that was a turn off if I wanted to bring whole family yes the prices are reasonable as they are but a companion card is an initiative we look for for my son :) Overall 11/10 it was legit that good!! Food icecream chips lollies and soft drink and grog arcade games and also a toilet. Taking cash and card. Tickets online and if not sold out at the door. No BYO food or drink *except water Couches and chairs to sit in We found parking easy but could see it may be a problem during extra busy days. Seats 50 and I read you can also rent the theatre!

how do i begin to even describe rewind cinema? i’ve had the pleasure of seeing ghostbusters, gremlins, the goonies, beetlejuice and the lost boys at this establishment. the guys who run it are SO amazing and always take the time out of their day to chat with you. the popcorn is so good! healthy, too. their choc tops are so well made, and the area is just so amazing in general. i love being able to enjoy my favourite films while sitting in comfy couches, with good food and warm blankets. will forever love this place, and can’t wait to go back again soon!

  • Mel Eblen

Amazing little gem! Each month they have a new theme with a whole bunch of fantastic movies to enjoy. The Candy Bar has a nice selection and the popcorn is yummy, they also have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on offer - make sure you check out the old game machines and their merch while you're there. The seating is not assigned and is a wonderful mix of chairs, beanbags and couches. Make sure you don't miss the movie trivia at the end! An experience you will not find anywhere else

This was such an incredible experience. I went here for date night and watched Labyrinth. Rewind Cinema has been beautifully executed. From the atmosphere of the setting, the carefully selected drinks and snacks, the movie line up and the culture the guys who run this place bring to the evening made it 10/10. If you are looking for date night with a difference, this is your spot. Can’t wait to watch Ghostbusters

What a fun trip down memory lane!! This place is absolutely adorable and it definitely hits all the nostalgia highlights :) From the retro video games, to the giant tons of popcorn to the intermission during the movie with old commercials Rewind Cinema has it all. We really enjoyed seeing some of our old favorites on the big screen - on a comfy couch with popcorn and wine. Looking forward to our next visit!

A whimsical, wonderful, delight-filled trip into a cinematic wonderland. Killer retro movie programming with old-skool personality in every area. I don’t know you personally, Graziano, but I love you and what you have created: a whole lot of magic in a disused shed in New Town. Proof that one person can change the world for the better. Thank you

Amazing! From the service, the delicious bar snacks and drinks, the amazing decor and space of the theatre, to the sound and visual quality of the movie and every thing in between, the whole experience was incredible. Do yourself a favour and bring your friends and family to a screening, at $10 a ticket it’s worth going to every show.

  • Dredd Pirate Roberts

This place has wonderful selection of food and drinks on offer, spacious parking, the selection of films is top notch and the atmosphere of the entire place is incredible. Highly recommend. The staff are the best. At the end of the film they come up and offer some film trivia, which for a movie buff like myself is just awesome.

What a lovely experience! The lighting was perfect. The sound system was perfect. The comfortable lounge and seat set up was comfortable and perfect. The lovely people working to provide the cinema guests with a wonderful evening brought enthusiasm and smiles to the night. They were perfect …

  • John Wright

Such a great venue to enjoy classics on the big screen. The sound system gives you the feeling of being in a “real” cinema, but the seating gives you the comfort of being at home! Food and drink options are reasonably priced and fresh pop corn makes the experience even more authentic!

  • Marco Marconi

Wonderful experience and real genuine hospitality. Was invited by my Son to see First Blood. Very enjoyable and very comfy. Great popcorn and choc-tops. Will definitely be going again. Top touch at the end of movie with Graziano telling the audience facts about the film.

  • J Anderson

Fantastic you and your kids will love it. It’s a great place. Comfy chairs and sofa, delicious food, games for kids and a 10 minute breaks during the film. This place will bring back your childhood nostalgia of 80s and 90s. Amazing place one of my favourites.

It's been years since I found a place like this, like the old movie theatre up on the corner of the street, but better. Just the most amazing cinema to be at, full of old stuffed furniture, movies from beyond the dawn of time (but mostly

Absolutely brilliant cinema - you get to enjoy heady hits of nostalgia and relive all the classics that benefit the most from a theatre showing - way better than watching in your living room. Tell everyone!! Bring your friends!
