Avoid. Save a lot of money and wait for Netflix etc, or buy yourself a projector and a speaker and you will have pretty much the "professional" cinema setup the State runs. It's that bad. In this day and age where we have a plethora of media options, a cinema, which is now an expensive option for those who want to see a movie, that doesn't go out of its way to provide a wonderful experience should be avoided. The State is one such cinema. It has no competition and it knows it. And staff and management behave accordingly. There will be competition in future which is a good thing. Cinemas smell. Seats and carpet stained. Staff rude. But then Management has zero service ethic so you can't blame staff. Toilets unclean. Short poured expensive wine. Run by US company now so standards are even lower than before. And they were low under Kelly. Management obtuse when approached kindly in email. Sarcastic, unprofessional response. If they respond to this it will likely be the same. Cinemas like #10 are a blatant cash grab. No darkness as it opens to a well lit cafè separated by uncovered glass. Seats all on one level so seating is not tiered and visibility poor. They don't clearly advise of a 20 minute period in which you can get a refund so we felt compelled to stay. This was only advised to us rudely in their email. Management, in their immature response (who must obviously want to be treated the same) started their email by thanking me for my lengthy email and then proceeded to furnish me with a lengthy reply themselves. Obviously if management isn't working, nothing is. Again. Avoid. Save your money.

Poor form to the Cinema ‘owners’ America Reading Company who have continued with the discriminatory habits of the previous owner, not allowing companion or DVA card holders to use their discounts on public holidays. My Mum who now resides in an aged care facility and lives with vascular dementia, was stunned today when her DVA gold card was refused, due to it being a public holiday. We could have paid but it’s about the principles and concept of why this is the ‘policy’. We don’t have a lot of opportunities to go out as a family with all of us working weekdays, weekends and nights. Today’s public holiday was the perfect time to have 3 generations come together, watch a movie and we had planned on buying lunch at the cinema afterwards… not to mention a bubbly or 2 whilst watching the movie. My Mum has many childhood memories of family outings to The State, and for all of us now that’s all we will have, memories. We certainly won’t be returning to make new ones. I’m fairly confident as a World War II soldier my Dad didn’t get paid over time or stop fighting for his Country because it was a public holiday. Discrimination, and unkindness at its very worst. Another place focussed on profits and not people. Disappointed.

Maybe 2.5 or 3 star rating, I'm on the fence about our experience. I don't leave online reviews often but why not. I was looking forward to our date night, especially as my partner and I received bad news that day. So we just needed to go out and have a nice time. We saw Babylon on Gala night with complimentary champagne. We don't go out to the cinema often, so I was excited. I found the younger staff a bit off putting. Maybe it was an off night. I don't expect a cheery disposition but the girl serving me looked like she'd rather be dead which was awkward! The movie screen was a bit too small and the volume a bit too loud. And somehow everyone was seated up the back and barely anyone down the front. I wish we just moved seats to get away from the chatty women behind us. Anyway, movie was good. Service was fine. We had a good night. But I find the Village cinema has a more comfortable atmosphere all round.

I had a valid gift card that wouldn't work online. I called 3 times throughout the day and had no answer to the line so I could rectify the issue. I then drove in and arrive 15 minutes before the movie showing time to find that there were no seats left (Several were showing online still minutes before we walked in as we checked on our phones). My issue here is that when I showed the gift card they said it was valid but just dosnt work online all the time?? Whats the point then of showing you can pay via gift card online.... We wasted our time on a Sunday and didn't get to see any movie and did everything we could to try and get our gift card working but when no one answers the phones what is someone meant to do? Pretty piss poor in my opinion.

I can't say much about the cinema experience as I didn't make it that far. I'm sure the cinema is probably quite lovely. However the reason for this review is I could not find anywhere to park. Everywhere in the immediate area is max 15min parking and surrounding area being max 1hr. These limits in place until 9pm . How are we supposed to get to the cinema without having to fork out more on a taxi. I'm not from the area(nth coast) so finding my way around isn't quite as easy, and being dressed is bike gear in hot traffic get quite tiring driving around in the traffic trying to find a parking lot. Quite frustrating. We ended up changing our plans and going to village instead.

A beautiful, high-end cinema experience. They have 7 cinemas that are on the small side with comfortable chairs, the smallest cinemas even have leather couches! There's artwork on the walls and lot's of beverages to choose from, their wine selection is great quality. It's also a large cafe during the day that can get super busy so if you're looking for a cozy experience pick your times carefully ;) The customer service can be hit and miss at the front counter depending on the staff member and how busy it is. I often feel ignored until I'm actually being served, many staff don't acknowledge new customers or take note of who was next in queue or how long they've been waiting.

May 2022: the State Cinema (gladly) under new management, seems to have continued its trajectory into becoming the most iconic cinema in Australia. With its chilled relaxed vibe, it focuses on the total experience, rather than tacky Hollywood fanfare of other establishments. Grab a beverage to enjoy before, during or after your movie, as well as amazing snack options. Situated in the heart of North Hobart, it's well positioned in the culturally exciting surrounds. It doesn't seem to attract teens, whether that's a bonus, I'll let you decide 2018: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cinema's Five and Eight have wonderful longe chairs. I would choose to see any film showing in these cinemas

Love the State Cinema with its variety of cinema sizes and types of seating, interesting movies and festivals, great ambience, lovely cafe, fantastic book shop and location. The ONLY reason I fail to give a full 5 star rating for the State Cinema is the tiny and sometimes difficult to navigate carpark. It is such a pity that a much larger, underground carpark is not available for patrons as finding a park in North Hobart can sometimes be a challenge (unless you add again to your cinema-going cost by paying for parking) - at least the existing carpark surface has finally been upgraded. Going to the State Cinema remains one of my favourite things to do.

State Cinema in Hobart is a cinematic gem! This historic theater seamlessly combines old-world charm with a diverse film selection. The cozy seating and classic architecture transport you to another era, creating a unique movie experience. They not only offer a variety of films but also serve exceptional coffee and wine. It's a great spot to unwind before or after a screening. The staff is friendly and passionate about movies. State Cinema is a must-visit for film enthusiasts and those looking for a charming cinema with delightful refreshments.

  • Rachel Kitson

The process was quick and easy as we had pre-booked our tickets. I love the vast array of cinemas they have there. Being able to enjoy a wine while you watch a movie is great. If you want a small meal before or after your movie, you can pop out to the cinema cafe. There are options for people with a disability also have options with lifts near the cinemas Nd one near the back car park. There's also a bookstore next door owned by the State cinema. Make aure to either book online or get tickets early. Sometimes it can get extra busy.

This cinema is a Hobart treasure and an institution. I'm so disappointed to hear rumours that they will start serving food in the cinema, even allowing patrons to order by 'phone during a session. This will harm the film-watching experience of people in the cinema: the smell of food; the disruption; the sound of eating. These are reasons why people don't go to Village. There is a cafe at the cinema if people want to eat. Please maintain the integrity of the cinema and the films and don't turn it into a cafe.

  • Sherrin Jackman

Went to the cafe for a light lunch and only wanted a toasted sandwich. All selections contained some sort of cheese and I was told I couldn't have one without cheese as they were all pre-made. With no other option I ordered one of their pre-made brie containing toasted doorstop sandwiches. Frankly I thought it was horrible. The brie so melted through everything else, you couldn't avoid it. Reluctant to eat there again.

State Cinema in Tasmania is an absolute treasure. This place nails the cinematic experience, from its cozy ambience to the diverse film selection. Every visit feels like a mini-adventure, whether I'm catching a new release or enjoying a classic flick. The staff is friendly, and the historical charm of the building adds an extra layer of magic. If you're a movie lover in Tasmania, State Cinema is a must-visit.

  • annette sturm

I enjoy the bookshop very much and the cinemas are good although annoying that not all are accessible to everyone. The staff are exceptional. The only problem is the cafe. I avoid using it as it's very overpriced. Mostly use other cafes nearby, luckily there are many. Also be careful with parking times if using the cinema, meter likely to need a top up potentially part way through your film.

  • Shirena Soutar

Very disappointing went to cafe and took a friend for their first time. Ordered a cheese platter for two people and literally got 10 lavosh crackers, 1/4 of a normal supermarket size soft cheese, 2 slices of jars cheese, smallest of small ramekin with olives about 6 and a few pieces sun dried tomato. Was $20 pp. I called and sent a written message with no response at all. Very poor.

  • Aaron Meyrick

Always friendly staff and a great clean cinema & toilet. With a good selection of art house and independent movies with Australian and some better big budget Hollywood films mixed in. The cafe and bookstore are always a treat to visit. Great food and perfect books for 's or oneself. A focus on nature, environment and all the great new novels to read are available.

  • Gemm Roa

I am obsessed with this place! If the state cinema were a cult, I’d join. A rich cinema history in a cosy environment for the film lovers! They show a wide range of great films including a lot of indie and Sundance films. Very well priced. Bar/cafe onsite as well as a book store. Only downside is the lack of popcorn. Otherwise you guessed it friends, would return!

  • Gregory Austin

Terrible experience: the new seat allocation system double books patrons to the same seats on a regular basis; a casual movie going experience used to be easy now it’s worse than any Village Cinema experience; my partner reached down for her drink to find a used condom under the seat….under new management is an excuse for appalling service. Won’t be going back.

  • Anthony Ross

Cinema 1 75% of the movie ruined by trap door opening up and noisy plant room/air-conditioning just took the experience away to annoyance, staff didn't think it a big deal, very disappointing as l do like state on the whole, did my money watching Napoleon in third rate Cinema with annoying sound and light from the stage trap Door!

  • Mike Piper

It is of my opinion, that there are not enough stars in the night sky to rate this cinema . You can enjoy an always surprising array of films from far and wide in an atmosphere of reverent comfort not found anywhere else in Australia . Make sure you have time before your film to enjoy a look around and check out the bookshop :)

  • Laura Bishop

For a more intimate movie experience, this is where you want to come. Great selection of movies, both international and main stream, there is usually something for everyone. The staff are always friendly and incredibly helpful. It's also great having a Cafe and a bookshop attached for either pre or post viewing!

  • priya bhandari

It has relatively small seating and screens. But the condition of the seats are better and well maintained. They also have wide range and various movie playing throughout the day. They have parking space available from Strahan street. The cafe was very cozy with limited but quality items with great prices.

  • Ricky Dempster

Village cinema you say? Pfft get outta town. This place is lush! Such a great ambience. Don't sit at home being boring and watch something on Netflix. Make a date night out of it and get to the state! I even had gastro the whole time and I still loved it. Toilets also really good ...

  • Chris Ross

Excellent place. Very nice theatre and should be even better when the additions are complete. North Hobart also is a restaurant mecca and is as good as anywhere. We went to Willing Bros. for a bite to eat before the movie and thoroughly recommend it. Very good tapas menu.

  • rr pelley

Very clean theatres, comfortable seats ... Convenient and large Ladies toilets (although only one cubicle has an outward opening door and the hand bag hooks on the door back are too high for the 'average' height lady). Polite reception service... enjoyable cinema outing!

  • Neal

My favourite theatre in Hobart. And its not the great selection of arthouse movies that they show that makes it the best, neither the post-modern retro architecture but rather the Honeycomb Cheese cake in their cafe. Without doubt worth going all the way to Hobart for.

  • Kylie Holland

Rooftop cinema -an amazing experience. Three types of outdoor chairs so there's one to suit most people. Cute little bar to purchase drinks and snacks before the movie starts, lovely vista up to the mountain and out over the river while waiting for the movie to start.

  • Iby Neerakal

One of its kind cinema in Australia. 12 screens. Wide variety of movie. Movie heaven for fans of alternate cinema. Great viewing. Parking at back. Convenient times. Never cancels a show even if you are the only viewer. Right in Newtown close to shops and restaurants.

  • Bruce C

Most of the main stream movies are here. Centrally located in North Hobart and a bus stop outside! Seniors discounts and RACT discounts too. Nice meals served here as well. Fully licenced and showing great one off movies and many other styles. Quite affordable too.

  • Mark Lo Schiavo

Saw a great movie in comfortable surroundings but I could hardly hear a word... maybe it was just the soundtrack emphasising that speech is an inadequate mode of communication... and ten dollars fifty for an underwhelming glass of wine seems extortionate to me!

  • Ryan Kincade

A Hobart institution! Boutique style theatre with a dozen screens showing all genres of movies from around the world. The bar/cafe and bookshop are also excellent. It’s nothing like Village Cinemas, which is its biggest draw card. Please, never change.

  • Amy Cupcake

Lovely old building. Very much enjoyed the small cinema rooms and I thought it was cool that there were multiple levels. There is a bookshop next door and a bar on the other side, all owned by Angelika. There was also a restaurant on the second level.

  • B T

What a delightful cinema. Visited for the first time this week and was more than pleased with the large sofa-style seating in the small, intimate cinema. Good quality sound. Only downside was no popcorn on offer but you can’t have it all I suppose

  • Jane R

Very retro and intimate way to see a movie, you can drink wine or hot chocolate in the cinema and even roll jaffas down the aisle (well don't actually do this, but they sell them so you could if you wanted to relive the heyday of cinema).

  • Kayelene Arnold

Love the State theatre. Today we saw Oppenheimer, great movie, but the theatre ( number 7) was freezing. It was warmer outside . It’s a long movie, 3 hours , so it needs to be made more comfortable to sit there for that long. …

  • sally woodhouse

Love this cinema. Great size, as in not too big. Seats are comfortable. I love that the cinema has a great cafe for meals or snacks and a fabulous bar, The bookshop on the premises is stocked with very appealing books. Fantastic.

  • kate herring

Thursday afternoon and our cinema was almost empty, very welcome in a pandemic. Friendly staff. Good Valhalla choc tops and coffee afterwards in the lovely cafe out back. A great Hobart wet weather experience for tourists.

  • Living Life with Nikygold (Oyenike Oyedele)

Calm and serene environment. The movie room not too big compare to the village cinema. Restroom is easily accessible. However, they have limited options for snacks you can get while watching your movie. Not even popcorn.

  • Dolores Traverso

Love the experience of watching a movie in the cozy downstairs cinemas. It's wonderful to have the option of enjoying a glass of wine while watching. The cafe offers a great menu and the food is reasonably priced.

  • Keitha Granville

LIVING with Bill Nighy, a gentle lovely movie about life and death, and what you do with it in between. A quote from Red in Shawshank springs to mind - "get busy living, or get busy dying" . Well worth seeing.

  • Paul Olsen - Finance Broker

Friendly talkative helpful staff. Cute small seating theatre movie rooms, great atmosphere, your even able to buy wine or beer to drink to watch the movies. Would definitely revisit when back in the area.

  • Kevin Eastment

Friendly service in a plush old-style cinema. In cinema 1 - I had comfortable seats with a good view and good sound. Not cheap - $60 for 2 discount tickets, 2 ice creams, Maltese and a drink.

  • susan round

Nice cinima. I love going there there, however, very disappointed that vets white card no longer accepted. This is sad as this acceptance made going to the cinima affordable, now, not so.

  • Matt Reynolds

I love the State Theatre. Shows a lot of smaller, independent films. Great bar to have a drink in beforehand. Want something smaller and a really nice atmosphere, this is the place.

  • Lyn McCullough

Great place to see a movie! Really cosy and love the bookshop and cafe attached. Nothing resembling a commercial cinema. Sure the screens may be smaller but so much nicer to visit.

  • keshini20

I've had some good experiences here. But last week I didn't feel welcome at all. In fact, the staff was very hostile if you asked more than 2 questions. I was genuinely surprised.

  • Mika Vermont (miko)

Screen wasn't as large as I would've liked, but the comfort made up for it plenty. Great if you want to relax as opposed to being blasted with the massive screens at other cinemas

  • Julia K Knight

Love being able to see a movie in the intimate cinemas downstairs. It's nice being able to take in a glass of wine. Cafe has a good menu and food is very reasonably priced.

  • Angela G

Love this cinema! It feels a bit more up-market than the usual cinemas. Grab a wine and settle in. Comfy seating and there's a Cafe that has seating upstairs as well.

  • Kay Roq

I LOVE THIS CINEMA. So modern but old (in a good way). I could spend all day here. The staff gr8. The loc kitchy. Screening room--I want to host something in it!

  • Jenny Kyng

We’re lucky to have this beautiful classic old cinema in Hobart. Friendly helpful staff, great cafe, wine bar and bookstore to boot. What’s not to like?

  • Ella Knott

What cinema doesn’t have popcorn? I was shocked to see that the only snacks available were a small variety chips and chocolate, very disappointed …

  • GLENN DRISCOLL

Brilliant complex, excellent food, very comfortable seats in the theatres and I love that a book shop is part of the complex, love the State Cinema..

  • Clive Hanks

Great food and beverage offerings, book shop, wine bar, and quirky and comfortable cinemas. Seats in theatre 9 not the most comfortable around.

  • dh716574

Wow, not just a cinema, amazing food, hot chocolate at the restaurant/cafe and a book store, just go to enjoy the atmosphere with friends.

  • Haz Films

Always a great experience at the State Cinema, not my every choice but to treat myself here and there it is a very nice little cinema!
