On Friday the 17th of June I went to Ster Kinekor movie theater at gateway mall with my little brother to watch the new Jurassic World movie. I stood in line and as I got to the ticket counter I greeted the lady at the front ,she did not speak to me. She pointed to the touch screen built in to the counter. I then picked the movie I wanted to watch which was scheduled to show at 12:15 PM as well as the snacks after this was done she then informed me that they only accept card payments. I unfortunately only had cash with me. I then asked her if there was any alternative methods that would allow me to pay for the movie . She shrugged her shoulders and didn't respond. At this point I was quite annoyed as well as disappointed. Fortunately another lady that worked there suggested that I speak to the manager. The manager suggested I go downstairs to the information office and deposit money into a gift card which I would use to pay for the tickets. After frantically rushing about and getting the tickets as well the snacks I arrived in the movie theater only to realize that the movie already started and I missed a good 15 minutes . This was not an enjoyable experience, I am very disappointed in Ster Kinekor.

I go to the movies a fare amount and over the last few years the service at the movies has been going down. You enter and there is only one person to help with the food and drinks, so you have to do it by your self when it is a bit busy. You go to get your drink and popcorn, again one or to people so the queue is long, once you get there the manager is just looking at you wile you get served, ( why can’t he run a station to try and speed things up) anyway then you go to a small table to but you salt on you popcorn and it is literally the same table you would take to the park. Then you walk towards the person to scan you in and she gives you a slight smile and lets you in. You go to the move the screen has got a small crack down the middle and when you leave you are met by the same lady who just looks at you and leave with the place looking as dead as it did when you arrived. So sad because it used to be such a nice experience, hope they can up their game.

This is going to be an odd review, as the last time I went to a movie theatre was about 10 years ago. I don't think the pandemic has been helpful, but the overall state of the movie theater is feeling tired, and the newer setup loses the touch of the old. It was hard to find staff and the entire place felt like a bit of a ghost town. The Prestige lounge was not great unfortunately. I was expecting the Prive of old, but instead it was simply a separate space to chill before the movie, with sparse food choices (poor) and coffee (okay). Not currently licensed so I didn't get to have a beer before my show. The movie entrances are attached to the lounge, so busier times may make this more worthwhile. The Prestige movie theater did have comfy reclining seats though, so that was good. Overall a fun night at the movies, but I cannot help but think that movie theaters need to make big changes to attract people.

This was my first time going to the movies since 2019 and it seems as though it has just gotten worse, the theatres do not have their aircons on making it hot and uncomfortable and many of the seats are loose. With regards to the snacks, the prices have increased with the quality and the size of snacks coming in much smaller portions. The Popcorn now comes in a paper bag, which makes it as though you are having a bag of microwave popcorn at home and the sweets are now the small boxes despite being in the large combo. To add to this, the queues for the snacks are extremely long and service is slow, making it so if you are not there at least 45 mins before the movie on a busy day you might not get it in time for the movie. With most movies being on streaming services offering new movies a much nicer experience can be had at home at a lower cost

Unpleasant experience at the Ster-Kinekor Gateway theater. Evident cost saving intervention with the prepackaged stale,almost cold popcorn. Serious upgrade required at cinema 1, squeaky seats at AA 7 and 8, air-conditioning vent in desperate need of cleaning, spider web from the ceiling and glaring spotlight in your eye while previews are playing was a put off, it was raining that evening and the ceiling was leaking, one could hear the dripping of water hitting a metal surface, you can also see water stained ceiling, Serious management/ upgrade intervention required to meet standards compared to the Tsogosun cinema facilities. The mens ablution facilities were disgusting and reading a few reviews down, nothing seemed to change, it's horrid. R350 not well spent. Disappointing. Won't be going there again that's for sure.

Horrible cinema, its old, toilets are disgusting and in the last 10 years i have been watching movies here the bathrooms remains in bad condition. Most cinemas are old so seats are dirty and broken The counter to collect your snacks are in horrific condition with cabinets falling apart and just looks filthy. The prestige cinema makes zero sense as although you have recliners some stranger sits right next to you so no privacy or no personal space. When ordering food, once finished to place to put in other than the floor. The previous prestige setup and gateway was better. Its very clear that the owner of the cinema is greedy, does not value customer experience and not willing to invest to make the area more attractive, comfortable and clean Take a drive to cornubia nu metro, its 200% better, TRUST ME

With streaming services and other sites, it has become much more better to watch movies via those sites, at home, cinema previews only show the "good scenes" from movies. I had watched the following movies at home (they were released in other countries before here)... 2023 movies... The staff is rude and don't smile and are very unhelpful. On the website when I booked the tickets online I need to go to the online desk to collect my popcorn and beverages, cone there, I get told to go stand in the general queue and wait. So booking online and trying to do get a smooth entrance. Nope one gets treated just the same as the last minute bookings. The popcorn took a while to co.e too. Went to Prestige and realised that I could have gotten my popcorn and beverages there. Anyway got inside but couldn't find my seats because the numbers have been switched around. 1,5,3,2. I booked 3 and 4. Haha what a joke this was. The movie was good but the big screen was dirty. The screen is growing mold.

The movie experience is brilliant. But access to movies is rather poor. U can make purchases with CASH. That was really a hopeless feature. My kids don't have bank accounts to use at the movies... so I give them cash.. but unfortunately they can use cash at the movies. The cinema is dying please make it easier to pay not hard for people to come to your premises. When I was a kid we used to come to the cinema all the time with cash now kids won't come cos they have no accounts. Please ask fnb or standard bank or any of the banks to give u stats on the number of non banked south African before u make such a choice to not have bank card being used

I would have given a 1 star but the movie was amazing and the IMAX seats were fine. But stale popcorn, tiny bags of sweets that are expensive is just not worth it. Machines glitching, slow staff and a website with a lack of information, made this a frustrating experience. I understand the trying to save time of the self order and collect but the system doesn't work. I went into the ladies bathroom twice before the movie started one before the cleaning lady and once after she had finished, there was lady's sanitary napkin wrappings all over the stall both before and after. Glad to see numetro is doing better.

Probably the best place to watch a movie, eat and spend some time (and money) with the family or a loved one. The movies are fairly organised, but often you will wait to the second for the cleanup staff to finish up before entering. Movies are also sometimes just ended abruptly during the credits so no more sitting around hanging on to the 'movie vibe' and hearing the soundtrack. Booking is easy if you use the terminals and staff are ready to help you if you suck with digital devices. Its often quicker to get staff to help you! Overall this is a great experience and the best cinema location in Durban.

Good new is they have changed the seats, not as good as before, but keeping in mind there were 6 people who were at the last movie I visited I think they need to reduce costs. They have people who provide good service. The popcorn was not too bad. The cold drink was great and huge. The cinema was clean and seem to be new fittings. I was able to go in and watch a movie without much trouble. The decor outside is brilliant and captivating. The new lift that allows easy access from the parking is very useful. The cost of the refreshments should not be more expensive than the movie ticket.

Went to the cinema yesterday. We redeemed an ebucks voucher for the tickets and tried to do it at the self-service machines with no luck. Eventually we were told to go to the cash counter as "the ebucks voucher can't be redeemed on the self-service machines". It would have been nice if there was a sign. I was also disappointed with the cleanliness of the cinema. The staff had forgotten to turn on the lights when the movie ended which added to my irritation. I would rather recommend that people go to another cinema. Very disappointing.

Paid for the Prestige Experience. Although the online booking and collection was easy the purchasing and collection of my beverages and popcorn was shockingly bad. After you pay for the expensive ticket they still can't get the snacks line to move fast enough making you late for the movie. Wonder if they thought about segregating the lines according to movie times. They don't deserve our support until they fix up this very crucial part of making your experience better. Boycott their overpriced and slow popcorn!

Very disappointing. Went to watch the Matric movie, in December. Half way through the move, the sound went off. After reporting it 10min later the sound was turned back on. Then another 10min later the movie was paused. After reporting this again, the move was then rewind and much of the movie we had already watched was replayed. No explanation or apologies for a very overpriced experience that could not deliver of the basics of playing a film. (This was in Cinema 1, at 1pm on 30th December 2021.)

The carpets and seats were extremely dirty and considering it was the prestige cinema. Got bitten by something on my ankles and face. The toilets were brown under the rim which was visible. Doesn't look like it was deep cleaned in years. When the mall was run by Bidvest Prestige you could eat of the floors even in peak season. In the last few years ever since there are new service providers its in a bad state all round. They have definitely dropped the ball when they changed service providers.

The anticipation of going to movies again after more than 18 months was definitely not what we expected. The self service kiosks are slow, the staff at the popcorn counter are even slower and unfriendly and rude. They should be enthusiastic about being back at work. At least greet your patrons with smiles and not scowls. The toilets were disgusting. They were stinking and unclean. I will definitely not be going back to gateway movies in a hurry. The only good experience was the movie itself.

Absolutely pathetic! The cinema was filthy with black mold and mildew on seats and floors. The screen had a very visible patch of dirt smeared on it that made it difficult to enjoy watching the 3d movie. The sound quality was horrible and painful. We were forced to watch more than half an hour of adverts before the movie started. Very disappointed in Ster kinekor Suncoast and I don't recommend anyone going there until it is cleaned and sanitized completely. Its a health hazard!

I like the fact that it's mostly self service, so I was able to do my bookings, input my Vitality cards, and purchase my confectionery all in one shot. I was disappointed though that their website was down when I tried to book, so I couldn't be sure what time the movie we wanted to watch started, so we were a little inconvenienced when the next show time was much later in the day than we had anticipated. Other than the minor inconvenience though, it's a great cinema to go to.

Ster-Kinekor Gateway was my favorite place for movies. The popcorn in a box is somehow the "feelgood" moments shared with a movie. The paper bag popcorn just killed that mood. The popcorn use to be super fresh. Now, it's somehow lost that edge too. Otherwise, it's the same feel good experience overall. I know it's a tough economy that we dealing with. Cutting expenses is part of survival in business. Please don't kill the movie vibe Dear Ster-Kinekor.

I love Ster-Kinekor, but the movie Equalizer 3 had an age restriction, yet I was appelled to see underaged kids between the ages of 6-10 entering the cinema. There were gruesome scenes that shouldn't be seen by kids. I feel that the parents are accountable as they booked the tickets, yet I expect that if there are age restrictions, a patron of the cinema must be at the entry doors to check the tickets and the ages of kids entering.

No screening for COVID or sanitisation of hands. Shouldn’t more emphasis be placed on this as the cases are steadily rising???Moviegoers just walked through. Seats were old and rickety. Definitely needs a refurbishment. The screen brightness was extremely dull and warped at the bottom right corner. Popcorn cold and hard. Soda was flat. Avoid wasting your hard-earned money on this. It’s no wonder that they are in business rescue!

I had cash on me and they could only use card, I miss the old days but I understand. We Ned to evolve. There was nice staff members and even with a rude customer that has a smile and they were there to help and I was catching the last movie of the day so it already close to they end of staff and they still have a smile on they face, I mean give them great employees of the year mate.

The movie was nice, the pricing needs to be sorted, everything has to be paid by card no cash, most people come to gateway they use cash, the movie theatre should arrange a kiost that accepts cash, popcorn was stale, I was forced to go to Gateway movie theatre because cornobia had load shedding, the cinema seats are filthy and stained, very uncomfortable was not a good experience.

We booked in Prestige and the service was shocking for the prices we paid. They didn’t even bother checking our tickets and the lady behind the counter found it more important to cash up before even acknowledging us. The lights stayed on in the cinema after the movie had started. Just absolutely poor, Ster-Kinekor can be grateful they are not active on Twitter but now we know why.

Booking online is the way to go if you're booking a movie that you know is popular. I love the lovebird seats in the IMAX, it's perfect for my wife and I as she always loves to lean on me during a good movie. Popcorn and drinks are set at exorbitant rates as is the norm at movie theatres, all in all a well run establishment! Oh and self-service is available so that's a major plus!

The Cinemas need to be updated. Their looking a bit old now. Took my son to watch an animated movie. We were 10 minutes late for our movie and the only ones in the cinema. I asked if the movie could be restarted and the guys that worked there refused. I’m not sure if it was unacceptable request or not but definitely feel like service delivery in KZN is nonexistent.

Watched a 3D movie, through out the trailers there was no picture on the screen. First 20 mins of the movie the 3D effects did not work. No staff personal ever came to explain or apologize. Patrons had to keep leaving their seats to advise of problems. When the effects were sorted I expected them to restart the movie.......unfortunately this never happened

Love this theatre! Super helpful staff. Loved the couple seating! Watched Fantastic Beasts and truly it was an incredible experience, so comfortable which was great for a 2 hour long movie. The online booking saved us so much time. And made it so easy to get our tickets and snacks. Really enjoyed the experience, would definitely recommend this theatre.

Id say and overall great experience after a long time alot of new designs outside and integration with technology, booking in advance, the popcorn and snacks more expensive then tickets but cooldrinks are still amazing, the cinema needs some work on comfort and inside design work some lights not working abd they don't have stair lights cannot see

Overall a great cinema experience. Spacious and comfortable cinemas. I did have an experience where I went with my family and our seats were double booked. However upon contacting management the issue was resolved, we were given an apology and invited back and had a great time. The latest movies are always showing and the show times are accurate

Cinemas are well kept. Comfortable seating. Remember to book your seats and snacks online. Customer care is lacking at the food pick up point. On 2 different occasions, they ignored us, continued their conversation until we actually went to the counter to ask when will we be served since we were next in line and waiting a long time to be called.

Place needs major maintenance, for the price of tickets and snacks, I'd expect my seat to be decent and not rocking. This is why I don't visit the movies anymore, money wasted. 2 people normal movies with discovery discount and snacks roughly R600. Popcorn wasn't fresh either, microwave popcorn tasted better, standards have dropped drastically.

Most pathetic service for ster kinekor gateway, staff all look so unhappy and miserable , not even a smile or hello, manager is standing looking like he hates being at work on a Sunday evening. There are Pizza Hut signs everywhere to buy pizza, As I enter at told I am not allowed to take my pizza in. So disgusted at this place

Went and watched John Wick 4 in prestige. Aircons were not blowing at all. It was extremely hot in the cinema. Very bad selection of food to buy to take inside cinema. Food looked old and stale. In the past you could get pizza to take inside. Which was hot and fresh. Don't think I will be doing the prestige option ever again.

Horrible service , staff acts like they can't help or don't know anything. They dont accept cash and that's honestly ridiculous!!! I had to wait 15 minutes to receive my card to pay and it's the worst experience. I feel suncoast nu metro is way better and especially the snacks. The snacks at Ster kinekor is not nice at all.

It's one of the better theatres in Durban, but the cleaning staff don't always do a stellar job. One the whole though, it's generally clean, well staffed etc. Only problem is the long long lines for concessions when there's a crowd. There needs to be a solution for this, maybe vending machines for the drinks/sweets.

I'm really disappointed with this place, the prestige is meant to be a first class experience but it wasn't good at all, the popcorn was really bad, seats are not good and the supposed gourmet menu has only about 4 items and you can't be served while watching the movie and the screen was also very dirty.

The prices of the movies are ridiculous enough. The popcorn on the other hand. I have to take a second job to pay for a combo and all you get is a half filled brown paper bag. I'd rather download watch the movie 3 months later in the comfort of my home. At least then I'd be able to afford a house

Theatre was very quiet; There were 10 people in the theatre. Sound and image was very good. Theatre was clean and well ventilated. Staff was helpful. The only downside is the high price for combo + The process of redeeming vitality rewards is way too old system and too time consuming

Best movie experience!! Recently went there with my son. It's kid friendly and wheelchair friendly. Massive discounts are available too with vitality and Ster-Kimekor members. Bonus is that it's close to the food court and play area . It's never a dull moment, trust me. …

The cinema has a musky smell at least the one we were in. Loadshedding cut the movie and when it came on there was no sound. They movie continued with no sound and this was rectified much later and the movie rewinded. I had the same experience at Sterkinekor Shelly Beach.

There are still certain movies you have to watch on the big screen to experience the full audio and visual effects and to appreciate the time, effort by literally hundreds of people and huge, ridiculous amount of money that's been invested for our entertainment per movie.

Great imax experience. Awesome sound, comfortable seats, and huge screen. The only issues for me here were the ridiculous price for the imax movie and the popcorn price, and the noisy popcorn packets (The cardboard boxes previously used for popcorn were so much better!)

Always a good experience. Staff are extremely friendly and accommodating to any requests. The cleaning staff deserves alot of credit with how quick they work. The only thing that I have noticed is that sometimes the popcorn towards the later shows are not always fresh.

Theatre complex was very quiet, and we saw the 12:30 show. There were 9 people in the theatre. Sound and image was very good. Theatre was clean and well ventilated. Staff was helpful. The only downside is the price. Basically R200 pp for the movie and a regular combo.

Good cinema but you need more food options. Cinemas all over the world have Nacho's, Hotdogs, Burgers, Speciality Drinks, Snacks, Samoas and a range more. Standard popcorn with a few salt options is boring to say the least. At least have caramel or cheese popcorn!!!!

Disappointed with girlfriends getaway on 6 September 2023. No snacks or welcome drinks. Goodie bag was a waste of time. Was advertised as ladies only yet were couples amongst us. Price was not worth it. Will rather check with Nu Metro for their girlfriends getaway.

The staff are permanently on holiday save for the 1 gentleman at far right corner who serves popcorn and sweets etc... was disappointed at the fact that even though youve paid your full proce you get sent from pillar to post to pick up your reward orders

IMAX experience was brilliant. This was a movie experience to savior. A pity that the cinema was almost empty Kudos to Ster kinekor for still showing movies. There is no substitute for watching a movie on the big screen especially if it is a blockbuster.

Comfortable seats,the prestige and IMAX tickets are worth their price as the experience is vast different/improved as opposed to normal viewing,there is a variety of enjoyable films to watch. Al in all it's a great place to enjoy the magic of cinema

Everything about this theatre is gross. The kiosk software is slow and unresponsive. Popcorns are moist and wet. Same the the seats and cupholders. The hall itself smells bad, smells like a gas leakage. And the sound is so loud it hurts to listen to

The prestige cinema was awesome. Very comfortable. Service was excellent n with a smile. The only complaint would be that the durban prestige cinema does not have tables at the seats like jhb does. Makes handling of snacks n meals rather difficult.

Had an awesome date with the love of my life. We watched "The Bodyguard". Watched it before but was the 30th anniversary since the first screening. Enjoyed watching on the big screen. Overall good day out with the best company (my gorgeous wife).

Didn't realize that cash is no longer king! Booked tickets online but thankfully I carried my card cos they do not accept cash. Watched Sonic with my 6 year old, great movie! Would recommend. However the price of movie tickets are ridiculous.

It's been years since i went to the Cinema and was inconvenienced when i discovered they do not take cash. I had to walk all the way to the ATM to deposit the money and back to buy tickets. Loved the Minions movie and my kids were happy too.

Don't bother unless you go Prestige. But also don't bother with the Mobile app, it's literally unusable, but even if you did book ahead, don't expect to have more than 1 or 2 working self service machines to retrieve your tickets. At least

Terrible timing of shows. Many people usually arrive 15min prior to a show starting. There is limited place to sit or even leave your popcorn packs. The cleaners are always cleaning right up until your show starts. So when the 200 people

Extremely uncomfortable experience sitting in a sweat box of a cinema with no air circulation or conditioning. Also an issue with the sound with voices being really low and effects extremely high(this is great, but needs to be balanced)

Service sucks as usual. Today there were 6 staff members present all walking around with only 1 person at the popcorn till. Waited for atleast 10minutes before I got helped. No store without a Frontline manager works in this country!

The price of combos are just ridiculous. And they don't even fill the popcorn packet to the line. The large combo is a scam (it comes with a small astros) . Cinema was great , clean and great service by the staff though.

Went to the IMAX, its was great. However, the Popcorn was definitely not fresh. Probably becuase I went to the 7.45pm show (last one of the day) and they don't make fresh Popcorn. For the price you pay, I'd expect good Popcorn.

Watching a movie and reading a book is such good therapy. It's been years since I watched a movie, but the experience took me back to my childhood. I loved every moment of it. Gateway offers so much for the whole family.

Went to see Oppenheimer at IMAX. Well worth seeing on such a big screen with surround sound. It wouldn't have been the same on a TV screen. This movie is made to be seen on a big scale. It's very expensive but worth it.

Sqeeky seat and movie too loud - even my 19 year old son concurred. Popcorn combos a total rip off and you should be allowed to bring your own with those prices. But lovely to be at the movies again after a long absence

Definitely one of the best cinemas! Unfortunate that the price of snacks are so high and some of the furnishings are old and damaged. But the actual experience, movie quality and audio is always stellar …

They cleaned their theatres! I’m so proud, there was even service with a smile. I haven’t been to the movies in 2 years, but Spider-Man No Way Home was made extra special at this theatre. Well done …

Service, popcorn and drinks were good. Saw a relatively quiet movie while a loud movie was playing next door which I could hear quite well, that sucked a bit but other than that, served its purpose.

I really had a great experience. I think it would be better to have a little bit of light on the stairs because it a bit hard to find your way to the last row in cinema 2 if the lights are off.

Extremely bad smell, smells like urine on those carpets, seats are horrible, can't find your seats before the screen is switched on, poor lighting before movie, near go again to that movies

This Ster Kinekor is massive. I found the layout very easy to understand and navigate. They still have normal salt for popcorn which is great. I will definately go back to this one again.

If you normally go watch Imax then I would recommend to watch prestige… The seats were terrible and uncomfortable. Expected more and was disappointed, however the Movie was still great!

Snacks are extremely expensive. The seats are narrow and it was very dark in the theater when we walked in. I had difficulty to see where the seats are. The show have not started yet.

watched the new elementals movie. kids loved it. lost my wallet in the theater and the staff kindly handed it in at the office. was very pleased and nothing was missing or taken

Went to a movie yesterday , okay ish cinema. Their snack counter had a card machine be that didn’t tap , required a card that was inserted … Not ideal as I only use Apple Pay

Definitely the best cinema I've been to! The seats are super comfortable with more than enough leg room. Staff are friendly and helpful. The sound quality is excellent.

I remember why I don't go to movies anymore. They didn't turn off the lights, the toilet we terrible, so unclean and smelt. I got a slush and it was just mainly ice.

Watched Sonic 2 with all the kids. Booked a whole row with the combo for all. Kids went crazy.... The adults had a little rest. Great experience. Well done.

This theatre is incredible! I love that there's a self service option and then you just collect your tickets and meal at the next till. It saves time!

Lucky for me, the cinema was empty but there is a number of protocols that are cheap and effective to stop cross infection of Covid-19.

Ster kinekor Gateway is great, but the prices of the tickets just scares you. If you are not on Discovery it is not affordable at all.

They need to revamp some of the seating in the cinemas it's gone a bit too old. The combo prices for popcorn is ridiculously expensive

The IMAX theater is well maintained and a fantastic experience! The popcorn wasn't very fresh and the coldrinks had a strange taste.

User friendly service, making the process of ordering tickets and snacks that much more efficient and less time consuming ⭐

No movies early in the morning. Have to wait till 12:15 for the first show. Seating is comfortable and the place is clean
