I have been frequenting SBC for about 4 years, always the Ballantyne location and once for catering. I am a HUGE fan of the food and drinks (see below), but there are some hiccups that others also have identified that can be frustrating. First off, the food: fantastic (and I mean fantastic!) pastries, croissants, muffins, sandwiches and the like. I have never, ever been disappointed. I have had breakfast and lunch there on multiple occasions. I stop by occasionally for afternoon tea. I once even made a large catering order for the hospital where I work. Surprisingly, not a lot of people at work had heard of this place, but the food (sandwiches, salads and drinks) were universally loved and I know, for sure, that that catered lunch led to a number of new enthusiastic SBC customers. For caffeine enthusiasts, their roasts are high-quality and they have a diverse offering of coffees (all from local CLT-area companies) and teas. The tea, Rishi, is quality, but overpriced at more than $4/cup. I genuinely appreciate that they emphasize their local roots, highlighting local ingredients and promoting other local companies in their products. Hooray for the small guys! The staff are always friendly and as helpful as possible. The one see where I think SBC can improve is efficiency and communication. When I tried catering, I had to call due to a problem with my online order. The person on the phone, located at the Ballantyne location, had no idea how to solve my problem and said, “sorry, we get no training for online orders.” I ended up paying more than I was supposed to. Similarly, in the store, i occasionally have long waits for items. More recently, I stopped by for afternoon tea. After 15 minutes of waiting, I went back up to the counter and the woman there sincerely apologized, saying, “I’m so sorry, I thought the other person had made it already.” Despite these hiccups, which are human errors and mild in the grand scheme of things, I genuinely love SBC. I have brought many friends here, all of whom also have loved their products. I would highly recommend any time!

We visited this location on a Friday morning and they were fairly busy. Here are a couple of our observations. 1. When you enter the restaurant is filled with natural light. It feels warm and inviting. The pastry case is the focal point straight ahead. To your left is a coffee bar and to the right is the dining area. The dining area is rather small so it would not be a place for large groups or people who are very loud. The dining area was very clean and neat. 2. They had really good customer service. Everyone was kind and patient as we ordered. They also bring your food out to your table when its done. Our only complaint was the wait time. It took a really long time to receive our sandwiches. It was about 15 minutes. The kitchen was a bit busy but it only appeared to be about 2 other orders ahead of us. 3. The food was bland. We ordered an egg provolone, and spinach croissant, turkey and cranberry club, pecan sticky bun, a chocolate croissant, and a caramel katte along with 2 orange juices. Our order was about $45 (which we felt was reasonable). While all of our food was ok, it was nothing memorable about it. We wanted to really love the pastries but we just didn't. 4. You should try this location if you're in the area. You'll get good service and decent food. However, I would not make a special trip to dine here.

So, first off, let me say that we love SBC. However, the ballantyne location is horrific. DO NOT GO!!! Not only are they severely understaffed, but they are very unprepared for their customer volume. We placed an order on Saturday morning via their mobile app, and we waiting for our time to get our food. Good thing we walked in and checked in on the order because they had cancelled our order without even telling us bc they ran out of eggs!!! How is that even possible? Prepare better. Secondly, when I was giving the young girl a bit of customer feedback on having a better system of letting customers know if their orders had been cancelled (we received no notification whatsoever) - she was EXTREMELY unprofessional rude, and passive aggressive. At that point, I was stunned how she had spoken to me. Not only did she blame ME, the customer, but she couldn’t just do the right thing in a customer service role and apologize for the delay and poor service. She copped an attitude and became very passive aggressive. So, not only are they losing our business, but I am writing this google review to allow others to have a piece of helpful info before ordering from them. Sunflour Baking Company - choose your employees carefully and wisely. If you do not instruct them on the proper ways to diffuse situations with customers, then they should not be dealing with them. If you teach them and they still do not adhere, then they should not be employed. It’s as simple as that. I have over 15+ years in customer service and today I was completely and utterly amazed at how this girl spoke to me.

I have to say that I do not recommend this store. I have a friend who is gluten free and I needed 20 cupcakes for her baby shower. I called 2 days ahead and ordered. First the person that was one the phone had no idea what the flavors were that were available. I will note I will take ownership that I did not ask how Much the order would be, but the price was not discussed. I figured it would more expensive than traditional cupcakes but goodness 20 cups were $87!! $3.50 per cupcake. A vanilla and/ or chocolate cupcake with pink frosting, nothing fancy!! If I had known I would have ordered 2 for the mom and then gone to Publix and gotten the other 18 for the same price as the 2? I don’t get it. My husband said “ put the gluten back in for that price” also it’s not like they were any bigger than a food lion/ Harris teeter cupcake. This was my first time getting anything here, so not impressed. Not to mention they were running so far behind I had to wait in line just to pick up the preordered cupcakes. The person on the register had no idea what she was doing and they were running out of things for other people who were waiting. So many people waiting on food. Again my first impression was NOPE!!

I am so disappointed by this location! Sunflour is one of my favorite places for a breakfast sandwich and pastry. I have been to all of there locations in the Charlotte & surrounding area. This one continues to have problems. Their pastries are about the only thing that stay consistent. Their #2 is currently a pregnancy craving of mine, I add the basil/walnut pesto with avocado. I have been given the sandwich missing an egg, with an ice cold egg and no cheese, with the tomato pesto instead (which is not good IMO), missing the avocado, etc. It boggles my mind how EVERY SINGLE TIME something is wrong with the sandwich. Ive ordered online, over the phone, and in person. It doesnt matter, wrong everytime. This is the closest location to me and it's still 30 minutes away. I wont be going here anymore sadly and will just have to make the drive to the other locations. The staff seem like they mean well but goodness, someone has got to whip things into shape.

  • M V

Some of the best that Charlotte has to offer. Nothing is stale and food is fresh. The atmosphere is chill work environment with bossa nova essentials taking you to a Brazilian space on a lazy afternoon. My egg cheddar avocado on a croissant was a fat bomb of flaky deliciousness. The egg is sous vide and soft melting in your mouth (a touch of maldon salt flakes would elevate but that’s personal preference). Desserts are to be cheered and not devoured like a hypoglycemic clinging for a sugar fix but more of a prized possession savoring every bite. What I love about this place is it reminds me of foreign bakeries as I travel the world regularly for work. I’m sincerely surprised by the fact it isn’t 5 stars but understand the commercial, consumerist and rushed American buyer my not fully understand the purpose of this establishment. I will be back and bringing friends.

I had been wanting to try this place, so when I saw a Groupon for it, I jumped on it. We went on a Saturday around 11 and it wasn't crowded at all. You order at the counter, find a table, and they bring your food out to you. We got the bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich on a cheddar biscuit, the frankly french toast (seasonal), and the black Friday panini. The french toast was my favorite. It had really good flavors. I also liked the bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich. The cheddar biscuit was my favorite part. I thought the black Friday panini was just ok. I also got a chai tea latte which was really good. It was spicy and not too sweet. My husband got a dirty chai in a cone. He was not a fan. He thought the cone made the portions off. You also pay more for the cone but get less drink. I think this cafe is worth checking out!

We used Sunflour Baking Co. for our December wedding and were blown away by their baked goods and service leading up to it. When communicating with Lauren she was punctual and informative, the sample presentation was also incredible - after seeing what they were able to put together as the to-go sample order, we knew they were the perfect fit for our wedding. Lauren really listened to what we were looking for (mini winter themed desserts) and delivered perfectly. The wedding cake itself was also exactly what we were looking for, she worked off inspiration pictures and it was beautiful. We can’t pick a favorite from all of the desserts they provided, they were all so tasty. We cannot recommend Sunflour enough and are so looking forward to getting more baked goods from you guys in the future. Thank you!! - Emily & Andy

I have been a huge fan of Sunflour Baking Company since moving to Charlotte 3 years ago but this location is absolutely awful. Today's experience was terrible and I will not be back. I placed an online pickup order at 2:30 pm which was accepted and showed a pickup time of 3:04 pm. I arrive at 3:00 pm and am promptly told by one of the employees "Sorry, we're closed." After explaining to them that I am here to pick up my sandwich order which had a 3:04 pm pickup time, I was informed that they stopped serving sandwiches at 2:00 pm and only "accepted the order to refund it." The communication (or lack thereof) was completely nonexistent and resulted in a waste of my time and money. The best part, I was not refunded and my card was charged. So glad I have to deal with a credit card dispute tomorrow.

Had Vanilla Bean Cupcake with Vanilla Frosting and Vanilla Cupcake with Chocolate frosting- their cupcakes are wonderfully balanced. All the components of a good cupcake: Excellent frosting to cake ratio, Not to sweet, Not to fluffy, not dry at all-but not overly moist and flavorful. To me a good cupcake leaves you able to eat another without feeling weighed down. They've achieved that here. Also had Iced Cinnamon Roll- one of the best I've ever had. Again not to sweet, not dry- but not overly moist, cinnamonny, good size...this is what I cinnamon roll should be. Again...the right balance so that taking a bite is satisfying...not "too much". This bakery has really impressed me! They know their craft and the science in making balanced and satisfying goods. Brava Sunflour! Brava!

  • Heather K

I love this place. Friendly/energetic staff, good food, and easy parking. The croissants are spectacularly flaky/messy. There are lots of small tables with outlets, so it's a good spot for a lunch meeting or working remotely. My only complaints are: 1. The wait time for sandwiches can be particularly long, especially at lunch. 2. I've been told 10 minutes after I place an order (and pay for it) that a certain ingredient/sandwich is out of stock. This specific scenario has happened more than once. I get it that everyone is having supply chain issues right now, but you could let me know before the order is rung up. 3. It really stinks when I open my sandwich at home and see that one or two ingredients on my non-customized order were forgotten. :( This happens not infrequently.

I try to patronize local establishments but I can no longer support this Sunflour Ballantyne location. I have been going to this bakery periodically for the past 3 years. They have good pastries but their breakfast and lunch sandwiches are disappointing. They are often sloppily prepared or missing an ingredient. They are also slow in preparing orders. We have to go out of way to come to this store - it is not nearby. After numerous issues, we will just stop patronizing this business. Also there is supposed to be a mask policy in this store which is clearly indicated by the sign on the front door. We were wearing our masks when not eating and social distancing from others in the shop, the employee at the register had her mask down under her chin.

  • Amanda Leazer

So I ordered a cake about 2 weeks in advance, vegan vanilla cake with vanilla frosting (my sons is allergic to milk and eggs). I asked if they did kids designs, I was looking for a PJ masks cake. They said sure and sent me a picture example of the cake they would make. When the time cake to pick up the cake....it barely looked ANYTHING like the example they sent to us. We paid $45 for a tiny 6” cake with added decorations that looked like it wasn’t worth even $20!! And that’s not even mentioning the fact that the inside actual cake was UNDERCOOKED and super dense and mushy (see picture). Here is the example they showed us and then pictures of the cake we picked up.....two stars only because they offer vegan cakes and the staff was friendly.....

  • Elizabeth C. Smith

Stopped by to get a treat for kids after a doctors appointment. Very cute space and loved the tall ceilings. We got the raspberry eclair (a bit too chilled and wish not so much glaze on pastry portion) and pumpkin/apple muffin (but dry). They were fine but nothing amazing to bring us back. I will have to return to try breakfast or lunch and a coffee selection. One negative (which I don’t believe is viable to change) is while eating we saw the restaurant across the way pulling catering pans from a van and just hosing them down and leaving on the ground beside the restaurants trash cans. Just not a scene you want to view while eating: trash bags and cans and pans being rinsed with hose.

  • Brandi Goldston

Will not return. Poor service at Ballantyne location. After patiently waiting several minutes behind a Customer making his selections at the bakery counter, the employee opted to serve another Customer who'd just approached instead of taking my order. When she finally decided to engage me, she was curt---as though my presence was an inconvenience. The goods I purchased were for others, else I would have left without ordering. Very unfortunate, as my experiences (both in terms of service and food quality) at the East Blvd location have always been great.

  • ItIsWatItIs Respectfully

If you haven't been here. You're missing out! From the moment you walk inside of Sunflower Baking Company quietly nestled in the corners of Ballatyne your greeted by the sweet aroma of all the baking treats!! And if you love sweets like I do. You should try exactly what I had better yet splurge!! Like the lady behind the counter stated "YOU ASKED FOR IT!" Prepare to fall in love I'll be visiting often. Check it out for yourself. My items were The Morning Glory Muffin and The Cheese and Sausage Croissant. Pictures are worth 1 billion words right?!!

It was second time to this bakery. Nice location and outdoor seating option. Their Orange roll was light, flaky, crispy and mildly sweet. It was delicious and phenomenal. First time I saw Pistachios milk. Tempted to try and ordered drip coffee with pistachios milk. The milk started curled up and didn’t look right. When informed the barista, he was kind enough to try one more new cup of coffee, still curled up… I tossed it out Good place to try for small good bakery with coffee and teas options

I stepped by Sunflour bakery today, it was a wonderful experience. Nice place, so delicious menu. Friendly staff, I met Huda one of the staff their and she was so kind and helpful, she recommended their specialists, like morning glory muffin it was a "glory" , pumpkin muffin was so delicious The croissants were buttery and crispy. I probably should go back to try the rest of their menu as Huda recommended a lot! All I had was delicious and had balanced flavor, I will definitely go back .

  • Christy Miller

Lovely little bakery and coffee shop that offers a wide range of food options too! I love the decor and atmosphere of this little place. I had a great coffee and chat with a business networking connection here. The iced latte with mocha flavor was outstanding and the morning glory muffin was crispy on the top and so moist and perfectly cooked and flavorful! I'd definitely recommend for anyone in the area to meet or have a nice cup of coffee for a break from the world.

  • Theresa Hemingway

I’ve been coming here for years and have always had a great experience. There is a wide variety of pastries, including very well-made vegan and gluten-free options. Since my husband has Celiac’s, and my nephew is vegan, we really appreciate that. The breakfast sandwiches are varied and delicious. I highly recommend the rosemary bread. It’s yummy (not gluten free.) I really like the coffee, and have enjoyed the varieties of non-dairy milks. Overall—great place!

  • Erika Mohrmann

Wow what a great experience! I ordered delivery through Seamless for the first time, and a couple items weren't available -- I was immediately called and offered to substitute or receive a refund. The alternate options were incredible and I appreciated the kindness to even call and give me the option (instead of just canceling my order). I'm new to the area, but can't wait to visit in person and bring all my friends + family when they visit! Thank you!!

  • Kimberly Brzozowy

First time here, came as a party of two. As most cafes you order pay and then seat yourself. I ordered an orange blossom tea and they iced it for me. The second half of my party ordered herself an iced dirty chai. The drinks were perfect! To go we ordered a chocolate peanut butter cupcake and an individual key lime pie. The place is pleasant and the person who took our order was nice, didn't rush us, and helpful! Thank you. I will be back for sure.

  • Minh Hua

I love this place. Great coffee and light breakfast items at a reasonable price. I had a cappuccino which was perfectly done. Also had a vegan banana chocolate muffin which was delicious. The place is very nice and functional. Lots of natural light but simple at the same time. There's outdoor seating as well. The staff was kind and fast. This is what a local coffee place should be like. I'm from Atlanta and wish I could find something like this.

  • Nikhil Kumar

Perfect breakfast place. Stop by for a coffee and some pastries. They also do cakes if your interested in those. The food is delicious, you can tell that there is time and effort being put into what they make. If you come down later in the day, it's really quiet so it's if your a peaceful person, that time would be great. Location is pretty good too, considering the main ballentyne business centers are not too far from here. Definitely stop by.

  • Mackenzie Fitch

Sunflour Baking is a phenomenal spot to pop into! They have an array of delicious sandwiches, bakery items, and a wide variety of your coffee needs. We had the scrumptious cheddar biscuits as breakfast sandwiches and they were amazing! Highly recommend that as your bread choice! The staff was incredibly kind and welcomed us to the area in the best way! Defintely recommend coming here, so many things to try we will make this a weekly stop!

  • Lauren White

The food is DELICIOUS, but the kitchen takes awhile. Today, my to-go order was never sent to the back kitchen so I’m waiting here for it (with a 1 year old, and 1 week old baby at home… so I wanted it to be fast pickup). We have experienced this slower pace a few times, so I wouldn’t come for a breakfast sandwich if you’re in a rush — but definitely come if you have some time. It’s lovely location, friendly staff, and a delightful bakery.

  • Ally Rose

I’ve lived across the street for Sunflour Baking Company for a year and am so mad at myself for never giving it a try until now. My boyfriend and I went this morning for breakfast. We both LOVED our food. My matcha latte was absolutely perfect. I even went up again to order more. The macarons are HUGE and delicious! The ladies that work the front counter were so incredibly sweet and work super fast. We are absolutely going to be back.

  • Julian V.

Had high hopes for this place when we visited as we live so close. We visited and had lunch on June 30th. The staff was nice and the food was good, but there was a dead roach under our table. I also noticed the place wasn't thoroughly clean. Hygiene is the most important for me; for that reason the two stars. We saw another dead roach by the window under one of the side tables. Hope they clean this place up!

  • Baylor Mcclellan

Obsessed with sunflour baking company. I usually order them through Uber eats & they’re spot on every time. When i want something quick to order, this is my go to. The food NEVER disappoints, and you feel good about what you’re eating. It’s always delicious & fresh, and coffee is organic which is a MUST for me. Anything from here is so so good!! And customer service is excellent.

  • Jim Secker

I ate breakfast at Sunflower Baking Company in Ballantyne on Christmas Eve for the first time. For my meal, I had the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a cheddar biscuit. It was so delicious. My date and I split a cinnamon roll, which was incredible. I took home a cheese cake for Christmas dinner and it was a big hit with my family. I highly recommend Sunflower Baking Company.

  • john cuervo

The muffins I received just came out of a fridge. The aren't fresh baked and they are over $4 each. 9.40 for two low quality bagels. They aren't good. I could have gotten a four pack at the grocery store for the price of one and it wouldn't be cold. Ridiculous

Great spot in south Charlotte (ballentyne) for breakfast or lunch. Top notch coffee with a. Great selection of baked goods including muffins, scones (lemon rosemary is great!) and Eclairs. Skip the line at Starbucks and head over here. They also have two for one day old muffins and scones. Super clean bathrooms. A must try. A+ best of the best in Ballantyne.

Just went here today 1-3-22 after a year due to virus...Food still fresh but my Morning Glory muffin has 3 small pockets of baking soda (that's what it tasted like) in it. I'm guessing just simple human error in not mixing the batter correctly. I will go again because for the past few years, I've never had a bad experience here until today.

Amazing experience at this wonderful bakery! The sweet girls behind the counter were very helpful picking out our delicious cookies, they have a great variety of yummy treats, sandwiches, soups, teas, and coffee. Breakfast sandwiches, and breads!!! Everyone should check put this SWEET spot for all their yummy cravings!

  • Theresa Goodnight

I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of gluten free bakery items. I was tempted by the individual GF key lime pie and GF cheesecake, but I got a delicious pumpkin cranberry muffin with a drip coffee. The customer service was excellent as well. My friend got a cookie and a mocha latte that she enjoyed as well.

  • Ashley

The pastries and coffee here is amazing. You can tell that they use a good quality coffee. The breakfast sandwich and paninis are probably the biggest hidden gem. I ended up going to this place 3 times in a week trying different items because we were so pleased with the products and the customer service.

  • Crystal Yu

My family loves this bakery! For years we have ordered allergy-safe cakes for our daughter who has multiple food allergies. The bakers there have always been very accommodating with our orders, and we always have friends and guests asking where our “delicious” cakes are from. Thank you, sunflour bakery!

  • Ben G

Lukewarm. Couldn't get a basic sandwich right that was just above their heads on the menu. Had to come out twice. It was good when it finally came out though. Pastries very dry and crumbling. Coffee very acidic and hard to stomach. Expensive as well. Nowhere near as good as the 7th St location.

  • Tracey Pearson

Great experience here the two times I’ve been so far! Nice staff, yummy coffee, and the Avocado Melt is delicious, which is a spinach, goat cheese, roasted tomato, walnut pesto and avocado panini. It’s so good. I also got an iced vanilla oat milk latte. Highly recommend trying this place!

  • Colin Berthold

My Southern BLT sandwich was incredible, the macaron was massive and super delicious. Their drinks were really good too, my girlfriends matcha latte has really good and my Jasmine green tea was super high quality. Super good service to top it all off. We’ll definitely be back! :)

We ordered online and the sandwiches (especially the cheddar biscuits) were soooo good! The catch is that the pastries in the display case tasted like they had been sitting in a refrigerator too long, and we ended up getting really sick from them. It’s also a little pricey.

By far the BEST croissants in all USA. Go to France for better. But these are the best. Sandwiches are great, French press coffee, excellent. There are other sweets, cupcakes, cookies, key lime pie, tarts, each day is different. Croissants are a staple, order them! …

Absolutely the best morning place in Ballantyne for coffee. If you want fresher baked pastries, cakes or sandwiches - this is also your place. You can see into the kitchen and watch as they are in the back preparing the foods.

Sandwich was good. The rosemary bread was delicious. Unfortunately they ran out of the pimiento cheese, which I think would have made the sandwich better and is the only reason I'm only giving them 4 stars.

They were out of many things, so it wasn't a 5 star experience. The employees seem a little less focused than normal on servicing the customers.

Several Gluten Free options (see photos...yes, it's all GF). Everything looked and smelled delicious. Friendly and helpful cashier.

Friendly staff, tasty croissants, and smooth lattes. Good dairy-free coffee options as well.
