i spent 2 years walking past, on my way to work, looking at this building with mixed thoughts wondering if i should go in. i was enticed in by an Anne Frank exhibition on the top floor. i was quite impressed with how the whole museum is set out. as you stand on the ground floor you can see up to the roof, each floor acting as a balcony around the perimeter so you can see to the centre of the ground floor. There is no means a shortage of history in this place. each floor is abundantly with so much to look at and read about. it's a sobering thought to how cruel human kind can be, yet through such hardship and torment, people can still find a hope a will to live through such oppression. Pacing my footsteps through the vastness of history, one can find themselves questioning their own values and the state of their own heart. This is a fantastically awesome place to visit. Sadly it has come from a dark era in history, but a necessary agenda to shine a light on the atrocities in which we as a human race should not have to experience again. Although it has been a while since my last visit, i thoroughly intend to return soon and take another walk through such a well planned out display of history.

This building looks ordinary from outside ,but in side is quite spectacular. I was inpressed by the modern design. White wall means it has good natural light. The holacaust exhibits told personal stories. These stories were made real and personal by the tour guide Peter. (Hope I remember his name) . Take the guided tour as this is most enlighning. We visited the cafe twice on our visit. Good food for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. Staff were very attentive. We saw a person who was disabled that needed help with stairs who was helped to get to all areas by staff . My friend was feeling unwell, the staff looked after her so I was able to continue the tour and get the full benefits of the stories of survivors. Well worth a visit allow enough time for the tour and the cafe.

Well I walked all the way from the city which was actually a nice walk but it looked closed. Eventually I walked up to the door as a security person appeared. So I asked him if the museum was open and could I go in and he said yes. At the same time a group of people walked up behind me and interrupted saying they were there for some sort of reunion. So not only did the security guard from then on ignore me but he didn't seem to know about the reunion. By the time he went away and came back l'd given up. Maybe I'm just inpatient but time is extremely limited and I actually felt like some sort of criminal left out there on the doorstep with a group of people I don't even know. I'm sure I would have given it 5 stars but maybe next time I'm in Sydney?

Sydney Jewish Museum is located in Darlinghurst near the CBD. Very few museums will hit you the way this way this museum hits you. A very informative museum about Jewish history, culture and about the holocaust. Holocaust was one of the darkest times for humanity and education about it is important to ensure such events never ever happen again. They had a new exhibition called “Reverberations” which uses artificial intelligence which has pre-recorded interviews of holocaust survivors to preserve their memories and is worth checking out. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Sydney.

The museum itself is an amazing peace of history that tells us the history of Judaism and its implications in Australia. I'd give it five stars if it were not the behaviour of the instructor guide who's asked everyone's nationality and made a terrible comment about something from my home country saying that this was "the worst thing he's ever seen in life and that he wouldn't give something like that to me..." not only exaggerated but also something rude to tell people he just came across with. We go to museums to know history not to hear critics. He hasn't looked me in the eye during nearly the entire tour as well... a clear sign of dislike in such a cultural place.

If you have to visit just one museum in the city, this is it. Buzz the door and get past security checks and enter the world of Judaism and jewish history. Splendid display of Australian contribution and the exhibition related to events leading to and beyond the holocaust. Great collection of personal artifacts, supporting audio and video commentary. Do visit the children’s room for a personal touch and to know more about the victims. Auditorium sometimes hosts talks with victims and is a great way to understand from first hand experiences. Special thanks to them for sharing such painful experiences with everyone and taking questions.

I have visited the Sydney Jewish Museum a number of times this year and each time have come away with another fascinating story. The accounts and artefacts provided by Holocaust survivors have been beautifully communicated and displayed. The volunteers and employees who have guided myself and my high school students around have done so with great respect to the histories they are presenting. The only suggestion I have is to allow the students time and space to take in the artefacts for themselves, though logistically I know this may be difficult. Thank you, SJM for the work you put into teaching others the histories of these people.

No need for a history book it is a living book what happen to the Jews during before and after World War II on Sunday there is a Holocaust survivor talking about her personal suffering and life in Auschwitz she is a 19 year old survivor who lost almost her whole family before coming to Australia the only problem I found was a mathematical algebraic problem with a wrong answer in the famous Jewish mathematician section of the museum go in and try their coffee and great cakes in the cafeteria it's well worth it it's well worth a visit if you have the time here in Sydney to learn about the past

  • Maria Wilson

Such an interesting museum. Spent almost 3 hours there - really well presented and great information. A moving children’s memorial brought tears to my eyes. Was too much to take in all the information and exhibitions in one visit, would love to live in Sydney to be able to go back and read the rest but unfortunately we are only visiting. Well worth a visit, even if only for a short time as even though we couldn’t spend time on each exhibit we found it so informative and interesting. One of the better museums I’ve been to.

  • Mark Cochran

Outstanding museum that allows us to remember the past and those who have suffered. The museum is very organised. The paid staff here are so rude and need to fix their attitude. The security guard at the front door needs an attitude adjustment and reflect on the way he conducts himself. The manager inside (I think) is so rude to the volunteers that help. She needs to look at herself in the mirror and reflect on her actions. Volunteers are great and provide a wonderful service.

  • Adrian Lyons

Hands-down, the best museum I've been to. Amazing displays with many original artefacts from war time and even older. The timeline and personal accounts/artefacts of the holocaust and Nazi-occupied Europe were incredibly intimate and horrifying. A beautiful building too, very easy to spend 3 or 4 hours walking through and taking in all of the information. For anybody with interest in history, religion, architecture or human rights - this is a must-see!

  • Mr Fennel

Really enjoyed my visit, thought provoking and I learnt a lot. What is it with the everyone is a criminal security detail. I get it, I'm built like a tank, have a shaved head, and a beard. I also had a big smile on my dial, greeted people warmly, and was super non threatening. Was playing peekaboo with a toddler even. Noticed other comments about security. Ask yourself whether you want to be open if you don't trust people at all.

  • Sean mills photography

It has genuinely good design for a building, very pleasing to the eye, security was although more than what you would normally expect for a museum, was actually pretty out if the way with a perfect balance. The staff are all nice, and very helpful. The only downside is its accessibility, as it is difficult to get parking and not wheelchair accessible as far as I am aware. I'd rate five stars but I don't know enough about it

  • Morgan Au

Came here on a school excursion a while ago. Great tour, albeit a little fast. There are many artefacts and stories held in the walls of this museum. A real reminder if the sufferings of the Jewish people's during world war 2. Holocaust survivors regularly give talks and recounts of their experiences here, making it a very authentic museum. Also an amazing design, with each level being a part of the star of David.

  • Andrew Walton

If you go to one museum in Sydney go to this one. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior or put off by the security buzzer. Once inside it really is an absolute gem. The curatorial team have done a superb job. The displays are informative, many are moving beyond words and the guided tour was truly thought provoking. It is a true legacy to those who were murdered and those who survived the Holocaust.

  • Gary Gibbs

One of the best museums I've seen in Sydney. It shows the history, events and culture of the Jewish people,in Australia and worldwide, and the horror of the holocaust. We allocated about 3 hours but only got through about half of the museum. There was just so much to see and listen to we would need to come back again to see it all. This is a world class museum that you should not miss if in Sydney.

  • Daniel McLean

Not sure where these good reviews are from. Firstly was made to feel a burden just by visiting. Over the top and rude security who forced us to unpack the entirety of our weekend bag including underwear and toiletries with smart remarks. Exhibition itself was no different to any other Jewish museum around the world, nothing particularly moving which was disappointing. Left after 15 minutes.

  • Dalton “D'Lish” Schloss

It is truly an eye opening and emotion experience to see this dark part of history come to life through the the testimony of survivors, the photographs, artefacts and journal entries. The staff are passionate, knowledgeable and created an engaging tour for our group that shared a balance of shock and confrontation, whilst also sharing the resilience and courage of many Jewish people.

  • Neo Kung

The best Museum, at least the one I spend the most time reading, in Australia. It costs 15 AUD per person. You need to talk to the gate to get in. At first, I thought it’s a private place but it’s not. Just ask the guard to let you in and go though bag check. It has lots of history regarding Jew history including the holocaust. They also provide free tour. Strongly recommended.

  • Ha T

What an experience. This gem is beautiful and holds SO much history and knowledge. You can spend a few hours here, good layout providing chronological timeline of Jewish history. Knowledgeable staff/volunteers who speak from firsthand accounts. Everyone should come here to educate themselves on the horrors of the holocaust and how it has shaped our present day.

  • helen ten bosch

We went to the museum with a tour bus about 40 people on a Sunday. The museum in Darling hurst is a beautiful beautiful building. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, informative, and pleasant. The memorabilia was well exhibited and there is a lovely coffee shop to enjoy a well earned cuppa. Will definitely go back again to have another look.

  • K S

Absolutely excellent! So informative and touching, a great way to spend an afternoon. Our guide Stella was absolutely incredible! I can't believe someone so articulate and passionate can run such an in depth tour with such gusto without even being paid for the amazing work she does! Absolutely fantastic museum, will definitely be back.

  • Michael Zheng

Excellent museum with a large range of exhibits, and the staff which some are Holocaust survivors were very helpful. A lot of students on excursions. Very moving stories and a in depth historical journey of the events of the Holocaust and experiences of the Jewish people. If you’re interested in WW2, this museum is a must see.

  • Maggie Liuzzi

Very interesting. Upper floor talks about the families that sent their children abroad to save them during the Holocaust and lost contact for years (or forever). Another room is dedicated to all the heroes that helped hide people, or helped refugees to be legally and socially accepted in their countries (including Australia).

  • Cooper Mckay

One of the most respected examples of a historical education facility that enables visitors to truely emerce themselves in the experiences of those living in such times through live recounts from real survivors. Fantastic opportunity if your ever in the area, would even recommend making the time to visit.

  • Benjamin Humphrey

Surprisingly sophisticated curation and fitout with a very "matter of fact" take on historical events with little opinion or bias. The holocaust exhibit is informative and sombre, but not depressing. Also, contrary to other reviews, the security guards were extremely friendly and helpful.

  • Sarah Helen Harris

I thoroughly enjoyed going to the SJM and I love that it brings rich Jewish history alive through the myriad of artefacts and experiences. I talked to a Holocaust survivor and it gave me a whole new, deeper perspective on The Holocaust, it’s events and people’s first hand experiences.

  • steven p

Great display, really informative. The section dedicated to children in particular really hits you if you read the stories. Friendly staff and volunteers more than willing to share their knowledge and personal family histories. We were there for 5 hours, well worth the visit.

  • Tony Brown

Sidney Nolan's experience of Auschwitz and the earlier Eichmann trial is vividly captured in this moving, sobering exhibition. It is well worth a visit. And while there catch the exhibition of rugs from the Cadry collection on display. They are very beautiful art works.

  • Franny Smith

Well set out museum with a good range of items and history. The WW2 area was very confronting and moving. I would highly recommend a visit here. A shame that after all the evil of WW2, and in this day and age a museum in Sydney needs armed guards. Do go and visit.

  • Antonietta Austin

Seeing documentaries doesn't prepare one for the photo wall of children or the pile of tiny shoes. The stories made it real in a way that film could not. This museum and others like it are essential to remind us of how evil thrives when no one speaks out.

  • Moh'd Ali

Been here once, Brilliant is describing this place lightly. The lady at the counter was extremely sweet and nice, we had a good conversation. Overall it's a great experience, the people inside are very friendly and open for any questions.

  • Amelie Kruse

It was amazing they had IA you could ask personal questions I have never seen that before. The Collection of Movies and Pictures was also amazing.

Since my last experience with Sysney Technical High School on our excursion last year, I am happy to say that the guides got better, the presentations got better, and that I hope Tech will keep coming here in the years to come.

  • Luke Williams

Extraordinary place. Don't hesitate to spend some time here to both explore the museum and listen to the stories of survivors. Welcoming, generous and informed staff will make your visit as educational as it will be harrowing.

  • Rebekah

Very historical. Smaller museum than the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC but it's a nice place to learn about Australia's Jewish history. Definitely going to visit this museum again when I come back to Sydney/Australia.:')

  • Jonathan Pinchefsky

Make sure you get there more than an hour before they close because otherwise they won't let you in. Not posted anywhere. A case of the doorman feeling like they have too much power. Wasted my time getting there and back .

  • ruth liebowitz

The guide was very informative and very knowledgeable. She took into account a young school boy in our group monitoring him by asking his opinion on different aspects of the exhibition. Looking forward to attending again.

  • Yaffa Gould

Everyone should come here to understand what happened to 6million Jews in WW11. It's an amazing place with dedicated volunteers.

Taught our children the evil of war and the devastating things that can be brought about by either man's action or inaction. Talking with Lotte who survived Auschwitz was such a moving experience. We will never forget.

The history of the Jews is the history of the world. Zec 2:8  For thus says the LORD of hosts, "After glory He has sent me against the nations which plunder you, for he who touches you, touches the apple of His eye. “

  • Alyssa McDonald

It is the most amazing and truly touching place you will ever go to. It touches your heart to think about all the people who died, and talking to someone who survives it, just makes the experience a whole lot better.

  • Charles DuMar

Very incredible place. You can't work out if you're uplifted by people who endured this evil and yet feel no hate, or totally bummed out that people can do such things to other people. Everyone should visit here.

  • rebecca bragg

Such an important place. Incredibly sad, but very well presented information by people who know what they’re talking about. If you can, try to make it to one of the survivors talks; they are truly moving.

  • Jim Knafo

Excellent museum! Contains more information and better exhibits than expected. Plus has a number of very informed and helpful volunteers and guides. Worth the time to get there. Highly recommended.

A very special place to be visited by people of all ages. Leave wordless, yet inspired. Visit soon while actual Holocaust survivors are still well enough to guide you through the museum.

Brilliant museum - well laid out with excellent ground floor exhibition on Jewish culture. The highlight is the midday tour from Gerald - what a storyteller! 100% recommendation.

  • Eric Barrows

Everyone should visit. But bring tissues. Many exhibits I just couldn't come with at all, but the last one referencing all the people's Australia still rejects is most powerful.

  • Gail
