Dirty tables- will be the title of my post… The food was such a disappointment. I should have gone to a taco truck downtown. What the heck is going on at this place. In what world is this a “nice French restaurant “…?? Good grief! I’m new to Portland from Los Angeles and I was eager to try this place. There is no way that this place is considered fine or even decent dining. I’m disappointed. We sat next to a table full of extra loud foul mouthed patrons. I understand that the restaurant cannot control this - but this is just my example of the ambience. We had to find and excuse to walk away for a bit, so we went to the restroom since all of the tables were filthy. The table that we ended up with was rocking back-and-forth. Thankfully we had to switch because the people were talking so loudly next to us and cursing up a storm. I felt like I was at a baseball game. I’d say that this restaurant is not someplace that I’d ever visit again. Disappointing menu. Poor temperature food. Fish “balls” (not patties) tasted like there were previously frozen…horrible! waste of time and money.

My only disappointment was there wasn’t an actual baked potato on the menu, despite the verbiage. That being said, the breakfast potatoes were wonderful and well seasoned and perfectly paired with a cold glass of rose. Or vodka, if you’re not worried about your carb intake. CJ is a fantastic bartender, and I’m so glad I got done being a good person early and was able to pop in for a late brunch snack and enjoy the beautiful ambiance Bistro Alder has to offer. It’s not often that the lunch crowd in a hotel bar is so friendly and I’ll honestly make the trek across town to come back soon - I had so much fun. Think old world charm, soft lighting and instagram worthy backgrounds paired with fantastic service and a menu that’ll make you think Ratatouille is in the kitchen because it’s so fancy and delicious sounding.

Our French onion soup starter was unfortunately only Luke warm, but good. I wanted to send it back, but it was Valentines day and my sweety didn't want a scene over it. She raved over the main course Burger, and my Tender Loin was spot on! Our server, Olive, was exceptional and very attentive and pleasant. She answered all of our questions and made some fantastic recommendations. The Frites were great, but they never travel home well, so we left a few behind.

Came to this place for valentines with wife. The French onion soup was great! Love the peppery taste and the melting cheese . If you have to order one dish here, French onion soup would be it! The cocktail was descent. We order “the Alder” which was gin based cocktail with mix of Prosecco and sake. It was a bit light but refreshing nevertheless. We also order salad with warm goat cheese and mussels. Overall the food was quite good. The service was fast and tentative. The only negative thing I would point out was the food was a bit over priced. $8 for a baguette with butter? I am sorry, I just can’t justify spending that much money anywhere unless I am about to die of starvation. Overall a nice place to check out. Four star ⭐️ for me.

Really disappointed in this place. We were seated fairly quickly thanks to our reservation, but the menu online was totally different from the one they handed us… huge let-down. Everything was very pricey, but the food wasn’t that great. The mac and cheese that I got had a pitiful amount of cheese (see pictures), and my wife said her steak was fine. Our server, Olive, was very nice and did a pretty good job. Paying an exorbitant amount for macaroni and cheese that wasn’t very cheesy just didn’t mesh well with me. It seemed fine on the outside! Left feeling bummed about having to give this place a negative review.

This place is still pretty new and they're still fine tuning a few things, but overall it was lovely. Food was fantastic, ambiance was jamming, and I highly recommend the Black Bird drink. It was delish AF. The one rec I'd make is about their whimsical drink glasses. They're very cute, but not terribly functional if you want to drink a cocktail. The Black Bird came in a bird shaped glass with a paper straw. The paper straw rapidly started falling apart and then the glass was very difficult to drink out of after that. The drink itself was fantastic, the drinking it was a bit difficult though. Still, feel like this place is going to take off real soon so go now before you can't get in.

We had high hopes for this place, but it fell short. The service was good, but the food is overpriced and mediocre. The deviled eggs were overpowered by vinegar, the fries average at best, though the sauce was good, the pasta au pistou was more than al dente and clumped together to form a sad ball. The mussels were ok, but my God, why have mussels anywhere else but La Moule, most of them were minuscule and had too much muscadet, oof sad. My husband didn't complain about his exorbitant Croque Madame, my daughter enjoyed her salad and the cocktail was good. Overall, a non merci.

Wonderful place! Exactly what you want from a nice fancy French restaurant! The atmosphere was incredible, the air inside alone felt so nice to breathe, people young and old having chats at nice volumes, and low lights to enhance the nice warm candle between the 2 of you. The food is delectably simple with generous portion sizes and the ingredients are super high quality, a sign of great cooks. Our server James was a true gentleman who served us very professionally and stayed informative through the night. Would recommend for a date 100%!

RUN! Do not walk to Bistro Alder! I try and find a great French bistro in every city I travel to and Bistro Alder is one of the best. We had the steak frites and it was fantastic and cooked perfectly! Do yourself a favour and start with the French Onion Soup, one of the best starters at this restaurant ON THE PLANET! What are you waiting for? Get yourself to this great Portland restaurant before you cannot get a reservation. Oh, and ask if James is available as your waiter - he is the best!

Bistro Alder is like transporting yourself to France. It's located in the lobby of the Dossier Hotel. Our waiter was Chris and he was top notch. He was super friendly, knowledgeable & attentive. The food & drinks were great. I only gave 4 stars becuase I would have liked my entree really hot, it was just warm. With that being said, I would definitely recommend Bisto Alder & would retun to try something else on the menu!

I have to go back and edit my original review I am not sure who thought it was a good idea to get rid of all the actually delicious menu items and replace them with bland and boring options. This place has great staff amd atmosphere and it used to also have the best breakfast. A croque madame that would blow your mind and french toast like clouds, and freshed pressed juices! Please bring back the old menu

First time in for breakfast & once again, a delightful stop. Freshly & individually prepared juices were super, we each had a "Big Bang", excellent by itself, but would also work very well as a Bloody Mary base. Food quality & quantity were well worth the budget friendly pricing. And once again pleasant, efficient & impeccable service.

Love Bistro Alder Dinner was superb. I ordered the chicken breast which was perfectly cooked and lightly crispy, which is just how I like it. Drinks were delicious as always and our waitress Courtney was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back soon.

Went there for a birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised! Service was attentive but gave us space to enjoy our time. Les oeufs mimosa were delicious as well as the moules marinière. I was impressed by the price for a bottle of wine, really good price for a decent bottle. Overall I'm happy with the experience and I'd go back!

Very nice food and location. Service is nice but get ready to wait forever (we had to wait half an hour for drinks). They must be understaffed. Has great potential. Edit: I went back and the food was terrible. The menu is reduced and the remaining options are overpriced and mediocre at best. At least the drinks are Ok and not expensive. Not planning on going back.

Excuse me while I tell you about a piece of Paris in downtown Portland. The hotel is lovely, the restaurant is beautiful, the food divine. Butter lettuce salad was absolutely perfect. Service was great as well. There was nothing that they could have done any better, simply phenomenal.

Great low key atmosphere! We had live jazz guitar for our birthday dinner and drinks with friends, or you could swing by and sit at the bar to unwind. Friendly and knowledgable server, tasty drinks, yummy hors d'oeuvres and French cuisine selection.

The food was way too salty and oily and extremely underwhelming for the price. The salad that came wish my dish was unbearably bad. However the atmosphere is nice enough and the service was excellent. Because of the bad value for money, I can't say it is worth a visit.

New Bistro with exceptional food and great service. French Onion Soup was some of the best I have had. Rich broth, lots of cheese in a small jewel of a bowl. Mussels were plump in a wonderful broth. Authentic French fries. Roasted chicken didn’t disappoint.

Beautiful ambiance, good service, good enough food, but not quite for the price. Asparagus starter was so salty my companion couldn’t eat it. Also so covered in heavy sauce, hardly a veggie dish. Lamb shank was nice consistency but mediocre flavor. Overall fine, but overpriced for what it is.

Very disappointed in the new menu change. Brought some friends from out of town in after bragging about this place having an outstanding brunch, just to walk out with egg on my face after we ate the worst breakfast of my life. Bring back the good brunch menu! More
