The newest slavery-themed attractions in Badagry. The captions and descriptions are bi-lingual (English and French). Divided into 9 galleries, the museum tells a broad story of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, on the site that was once the biggest slave market of the coast of West Africa. The experience is enriched even more, and the stores brought to live, with statues and sculptures. And the height of the visit here is the climb down into the dungeon, where slaves were locked up until they were sold off.

The Badagry Slave Market was established in the year 1502. It was held every 5 days. The Market was located in the heart of the town. It was named after the Vlekete divinity, the goddess of ocean and wind, worshiped by the people, it also served as a customary court during the pre-colonial era and one of the prominent figures tried here was Richard Lander, a British explorer in 1825. It was the major and most popular Slave market on the West African coast.

  • Peik Bruhns

Most important place to visit on this planet earth. Every person should be compelled to visit this place and understand this darkest side of our history, linking to the most horrible side of our present (human trafficking). It is currently not the most touristically well developed destination, but it definitely is the one place on this globe where EVERYBODY should have been at least once.

1st grade tourist site. The tour guides had good knowledge of the historical setting of Badagry in relation to the slave trade and the slave traders. The Slave market has so many educative and enlightening graphics and monuments that depicts the true history of slave trade in Trans Atlantic route.

I was emotional all through. Schools need to overhaul history classes and make them more fun for students. I will not forget to also plead with Lagos State Government to pay some attention to those historical locations.

This is just an open space close to the sea where slaves were traded. From here you take the boat to the island where the slaves would walk to the point of no return. Its an emotional tour so get ready for it.

Not worth the 1.5 Eu admission. Very little related to slavery. Unpleasant staff. Amateurish content.
