Today was my 1st time back since since it opened after renovations. The facelift looks nice overall, but poor signage around the store necessitate asking a staff person- if you find an available one. I stepped in off the street and literally didn't see where the register/ checkout section would be- no signs, and no signs alerting where to go to pick up an online order. I had to wait to ask an associate (who stood there with his coworker and didn't acknowledge me) at the little desk to the right of the entrance as to where I pick up an order. He gestured ambigously and I still didn't see where the checkout would be since the back wall and registers all blend in with the same beige or tan sort of color scheme. The checkout area materialized "at the back wall." I picked up my order and had to ask where the cafe is, since it changed from the mezzanine level. (And, it was not written out on the map upstairs in the key). The cafe is no longer a Starbucks so while they offer Starbucks coffee, they don't accept Starbucks giftcards. The look of the store is fresh and new as expected post renovations. The small tables of books on the 1st floor are arranged neatly and are easy to navigate. I just wished there were more signs so I could manage my way around better and more directly, and not have to look to ask someone. Also, the 1st floor shelves are noted by genre in a funky font, maybe handwritten? Standard font would be easier to read, especially from a distance or off the escalator. At least the Barnes and Noble is still here since it's such an important resource, and not out of business!

Again, love bookstores, cafes, libraries and museums. And NYC, Is a truly wonderful cultural center for all of them. We are so extremely fortunate, to have grown up in this labyrinth reservoir of knowledge. This is another one of my favorite Barnes & Nobles, l completely agree with the other reviewer, who said "this place is huge ". And I also have great appreciation, for the multiple-level high arches ceiling architecture. Reminiscent of an ancient mountain monastery, contemplation repository for absolute knowledge, enlightenment. And the cafe, is a cozy enchanting enclave of an enclosure, secretly hidden, just below the mezzanine level. Again the staff, for their tremendous guidance, is truly exceptional What's not to love/please like

Having Barnes & Noble in our neighborhood is such a wonderful thing. We can shop for cards and toys for birthdays, books for fun, and have some nice treats and coffee to relax. My kids love the store because they can touch and see the actual items to determine if they really want to purchase those items. Another reason the kids like the store is that they can have what they wanted right away instead of waiting and forgetting about them in a few days. I also like the Christmas cards the store had. The cards are more classical, in my opinion, and they reminded me the Christmas in my childhood memories.

I love Barnes and Noble and I hope we don't lose them in the midst of all this technology. I don't make it there often, I got to catch their sale today. In the span of like 4 months, I've been twice and both times Franklin has rung up my sale. Franklin doesn't greet or greet you back, nor does he thank you or says goodbye. I work retail I get it!!!! I do know that people never forget how you make them feel so when I assist a client that treats me humane and with respect.I match their energy, regardless of how tired, stressed I am.

This place is like a museum, you have to come back to see more. They are always fully stocked and most of the staff is pretty nice not including some of the older people who seem miserable to be there. the only reason I took a star off is because some of the staff that stocks are kind of rude. Other than that, they have multiple floors jam packed with different categories and they are always up to date with holiday books. You can definitely get lost in time in there, I love it :)

This location on 83rd and Broadway has survived the test of time. They have served the UWS well since the start and have grown with the times. I walked in there the other day and just through random browsing found 3 books I didn't know I needed. The staff are knowledgeable and curious for new literary finds. At checkout the associate asked me for a recommendation on an author based on my purchase. I love that. Make the time to visit here and expand your horizons.

  • Sassy Browne

Had a great selection of books and I found what I was looking for. There are 3 floors here which were easy to get to. Top floor is quite spacious which allows you to explore unbothered. Bathroom was pretty clean. I just wish they could bring back the chairs!! Man was I tired from walking around. I know there's a Cafe but I miss the chairs. Surely we can still practice social distancing with the chairs. Otherwise it was a pleasant experience.

Barnes and Noble is a fantastic bookstore with an extensive selection of books, magazines, and other media. The store is well-organized, making it easy to find what you're looking for, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, with plenty of comfortable seating areas to relax and browse through your favorite books. Overall, Barnes and Noble is a great place to spend some time and discover new reads.

  • Mafer Vega

I absolutely love Barnes and Noble. They have so many cool things, and so many books, in a warm atmosphere. Some stores even have a coffee shop. The bathrooms are not always the best, but that's because people use them irresponsibly and make a mess, while also using them when not purchasing anything. They have elevators in case you are in a wheelchair and need them. Very quirky stuff and cool totes, planners and cozy reading socks.

My two-year-old and I make it a habit to go at least monthly. We grab a pastry at the cafe, often times go upstairs for the book reading, or read a few books ourselves and slowly build his collection of his favorites. It also has amazing views of the street, and we like playing “I spy” there. The both of us easily spend multiple hours there on the weekend. We love this place! This store is so great.

  • Hector Cordero

Classic bookstore on the Upper West Side. Good selection of books in every category. I found what I was looking for. They have a small cafe in the second floor (left side). They are undergoing some constructions on the first floor but do not interfere the please of sitting on a chair and read one of their books in the quiet space of the second floor. The staff was friendly. Highly recommend!

  • antonio rodriguez

I have been to this location of Barnes & Noble and many others. I am pleased to say that I am always satisfied with my numerous visits. I always feel welcomed by the staff and I love being transported to other worlds among the pages of all the great books. I've been wanting this Keith Haring book forever, so I finally pulled the plug and bought it! It did not disappoint! ❤️

  • Alisha Kelly

Love it here! I mostly go here to get YA literature, Agatha Christie novels, B&N bags, and book marks. Most of the time, they have just what I need. There's a store/restaurant that you can sit, eat, and read at within Barnes & Noble. They also have reading chairs located within the book shelves. They are currently reconstructing the store, but just head upstairs.

Forgot what it was like to actually go in a book store.. I chose the right one by far. So many to choose from. Staff was so nice. Books were all organized and the store was very clean. Everyone offered to help find my selection as there were so many books you can get lost. Totally recommend this Barnes&Noble...

  • Loving Life by Lerubi Lopez

Amazing!! Great for parents to go with their kids. Both parties get to enjoy! Kids section first, have them grab their items, then parents go to your section and sit the kids next to you as you look through phenomenal books. Great customer service as well cheers to your experience! I hope you enjoy. …

  • Aung Moon

I don't know her name but she looks half black, half latino with long wavy/curly hair down past her shoulders, about 5'8 or 5'9. She was fantastic. I had a 15 minute break to find two books (Pale Fire and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) and she helped me find them and I was out the door. Thanks!

  • Quiana Berry

One of a dying breed. Love barnes and noble before they shut down. This is one of the few to keep the memory alive. The place was clean, plenty of areas to sit and packed with great reads. Loved the seat by the windows to read with a view of nature. Definitely a spot for creativity.

  • Natasha Abdul

This book palace had a great and wide selection of i streaming books with a multitude of genres religious, fantasy, manga etc the staff were exceptional and one called spencer was particularly great and helpful he searched each fantasy section to see if they had the book I wanted

  • in hac lacrimarum Vale

Exceptional book store, as B&N truly are. They lose a star for the condescendingly rude staff member who openly lied to me by denying the store had a washroom. When confronted with the fact, it's on level 2, (thanks for asking), proceeded to tell me that she "knew that".

  • Ean

The upper west 86th the lady that works on the children books ( second floor) is a mess. She's always complaining with bad mood and talk customer in a bad way. I like the store and I buy many books always but I feel uncomfortable to comming and buy with this situation.

  • M O

Very quiet and spacious, it’s my first time visiting this store and it’s quite different compared to the one on 5th Avenue. There wasn’t really much help by the staff trying to find particular titles. Maria C was very pleasant, while she was finalizing my transaction.

  • Ad A

Loved this place. A full of nostalgia. I came here almost after 12 years. Before Amazon it used to be go to place to buy books. I really loved that they’re still maintaining this place. I felt like the reflections of life before everything was accessible in internet.

  • Kimberly Everette

I was too late to get Snoop's cookbook delivered on time for Christmas, so I went to Barnes and Noble for the first time in many years. They had none on the shelves but kindly sifted through an incoming shipment and put one aside for me. Amazing customer service!

  • Theresa M

Why are bookstores are so underrated? This gem on the UWS speaks to its location and community. It is a model of broad-based options with the self-awareness of the community it serves. Long live the bookstore!! And this one proves you can make it work.

  • Marielena Chacon

Love the store! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Love their section of books in Spanish. Also the young adult section is inmense. My daughter and I got lost there for a couple of hours and then had some refreshments at their café.

  • Tony Parodi

October 2022 this place still exists and they sell real books ( and some other stuff plus a cafe.) The place is timeless with a newer selection. If you have ever been to a Barnes and Nobles before, it's still the same. The bathroom was clean.

  • Barbara Valcarcel

My husband looked at a book about calculus he liked. I went in hope of getting a godiva pumpkin cheesecake at the Starbucks cafe so sorry no longer have the chairs to sit in and lounge while browsing through as many books as my heart desires

  • Lani Shepard

I found a large calendar I liked, a bookmark, and bought Michelle Obama's The Light We Carry. I took the 1 to 79th Street and walked a couple blocks north to Broadway and 81st Street. Barnes & Noble is one of my favorite chain stores.

  • Mayu Kanai

Prices are just right, larger store then I expected, and I spent hours here !!! My neighborhood Barnes and Nobles closed down due to covid so I wasn’t able to visit one for a while. I found this location and I’m very glad. Great!

  • Laura Manni

If you love browsing books then I can't see why you wouldn't love it here. And the staff are always so helpful, even if a bit busy at times. It's floors of mostly books but you can find games, puzzles and other gift type items.

  • alina stallone

The OG Barnes and noble of my childhood. The renovations are growing on me. Weird at first. The second floor looks like a hospital. Needs more chairs and tables in the cafe. I find the layout on the ground floor nice!

  • Alexandra Feliciano

I like the library and have a lot of books, also they have a tiny K-pop section!!!!!! I saw the "rock star (락 star)" album, I'm a Stay from the group STRAY KIDS, and the albums are not too expensive, I like it :)

Always a great experience. Super helpful staff and one can peruse many magazines and seating is ok to do so. Purchase a coffee or treat and have a seat as it is neat in my City.

  • Fredrick D. Scott, FMVA

The Barnes and Noble is small and doesn't offer much in store seating for patrons to sit down and enjoy a book before they buy. The book selection, overall, is rather small too.

  • Luxius MorningStar

This is one of my two favourite bookstores in the world. I personally like the support of the employees and their kindness. I feel so calm and excited every time i go there.

Newly renovated, beautiful store. Severely understaffed. I could not find any one to ask for help and then I waited to pay, but no one was there so I left empty handed.

An upper west side staple. Great selection of books and small gifts. Staff is always helpful and courteous. They have a small Starbucks cafe hidden on the second floor.

  • Hap Burke

The WSJ piece on this that ran in the summer of 2023 is accurate: this is a unique and fun Barnes & Nobles and a clear step in the right direction for the bookseller.

  • Yvonne Lucky-Jethwa

Wonderful bookstore. Staff helpful and friendly. Would go back anytime. Children need to be exposed to books as opposed to reading from their tablets or phones.

  • A L ə X

Barnes and Noble is not only the best book store, they also have awesome toys, games and arts and crafts. It is always my first stop for holiday shopping …

  • NCOIC718

Interestingly, B&N are now the underdogs and we find ourselves rooting for them vs amazon. Having work done currently but always a fun place to get a book

  • jim henderson

This shop is confused, this week. Sections moved, layout changed, labels misleading. Pretty soon it will all be organized properly again, though smaller.
