I found Bernie's Tavern on Instagram and it caught my eye. My partner and I had a good experience and glad to have found a good local spot that we can frequent. Parking here can be challenging though. My partner and I visited Bernie's Tavern late in the afternoon on a Sunday. The establishment was relatively busy with a little more than half capacity filled with patrons. The service was a little bit slow, but not outrageous. We waited a little bit longer than expected to have our orders taken. The staff were courteous and friendly. The drinks menu was diverse with a good variety of beer, wine and cocktails. My partner and I were happy to see Guinness on tap. My partner had a Caesar, which was good, but fairly standard Caesar. I ordered the burger, which my partner ordered the house salad an be added chicken. The salad and chicken portion was very generous. The itself was pretty good, but needed something a bit extra to be something special. I'm a bit of a burger enthusiast and I thought their smash burger was great. The burger was dressed with typical burger toppings, but they were fresh and quality ingredients. The bun was excellent too, which is an important, but often overlooked aspect of a quality burger. The burger came with loads really good fries - not too greasy, crispy sand the outside and fluffy on the inside. I ordered a side of curry ketchup which was OUTSTANDING. Very similar to a currywurst style ketchup. My partner and I really liked the atmosphere of this place. The decor had the hip, rustic feel of a repurposed industrial shop. What's really cool is that Bernie's Tavern is associated, and connected, with Shorty's Pizza and 1101 Convenience. Shorty's Pizza is on the menu. Outdoors it looks like there is a substantial patio for when the weather is warmer. Can't wait to come back in the summer. Parking can be difficult as it's only street parking, and houses on the closest street do not seem to have many driveways, so locals residents are also parking on the street. I recommend walking to Bernie's Tavern if you are local. I'm close to giving Bernie's Tavern 5 stars, but it comes just a little short with the service being a tad slow, the menu being a little basic an me parking being very limited. 4.5 stars UPDATE: I came back for brunch with my partner. We had The Cure Sandwich and Bernie's Benny. The Benny was alright, but The Cure was incredible. It was like a breakfast smash burger, but instead of a beef patty it had a bacon patty, a fried egg and two slices of American cheese. The home fries were really good - crispy sand lightly seasoned. I also have to call out the Peach Habanero Hot Sauce from Mitch's Craft Kitchen. It's on the sweeter side, but also properly hot.

Finally got a chance to check out Bernie's and we were not disappointed. Chef Mitch wasn't in but the place was in capable hands judging by the food that we were served. I had the Roast Beef Dinner that came with the most creamy mashed potatoes that you will have in your entire life. Unbelievably creamy to the point that they should be against the law. The roasted veg were cooked to perfection and super flavourful. The Beef was shredded and melt in your mouth. Portion sizes were excellent. I was surprised that it didn't come with gravy but I requested some on the side and was top shelf. It tasted more chicken based but it really hit the spot especially with my wife's fries. She chose the Burger that featured a double smash patty, American cheese, burger sauce, pickles, onions, tomato and lettuce. The beef had awesome flavour and was cooked flawlessly. Probably a nice 80/20 mix from a reputable purveyor. The fresh cut fries were out of this world. Top quality all the way. Clean oil and most likely blanched first and double fried and there were lots of them. The service was fast and friendly. Can't wait to go back and try the Beef Weck. Who outside of Western NY serves a Weck? I'm guessing nobody. Maybe in a neighbouring border town but certainly not anywhere near these parts. Check out Bernie's Tavern and you will not be disappointed.

I tried Bernie’s today after a recommendation from Shorty’s pizza next door. Went with one of their signature deep dish pizzas (the dough comes from Shorty’s). Overall it was a pretty good pizza, the crust was amazing, nice crisp with chewy centre, the sesame seed bottom is a nice touch and the cheese and pepperoni were a great quality. There was however a large amount of sauce/marinara on top directly in the centre that seemed to make the pizza soggy. But great tasting all around. The price was higher than other normal style pizzas in the area, but the quality was there. The service was on time, super friendly and very accommodating. Will definitely be back to try some of the other menu items, and take advantage of their patio seating out back. Check out Bernie’s if you are in the area.

Amazing food and portions. Very cute inside and out, the patio is huge, the washrooms clean and the staff was very patient and managed our 10 person group incredibly. I know it's a minor complaint, but I wish something could be done about the wasps. I don't know if the brown paper bag trick actually works, or possibly some honey traps around the patio, but we had what felt like 5-6 buzzing us all evening. That's out of their control mostly though, so absolutely would recommend for a bar style dinner with an actual competent cook on the grill!

Started off great. We were greeted fairly quickly. We sat in the corner near the kitchen. There were 4 flies that kept landing on us and our food. The spaghetti fingers were great. I had pepperoni pizza (tiny cup). Enjoyed the pizza. My gf had the club with egg bread. Unfortunately, it was not what most people would call egg bread. It wasn't sweet. She did not enjoy the club. Ended up not eating her meal. She would have ordered something else if she had known the bread was different. The egg bread was mentioned to the waitress. She said it was made in house. It was disappointing, that no effort was made to make my gf happy with her meal. It was not the best experience this evening

Been meaning to try this place since it opened and finally got there this afternoon. Great space with big opening onto the rear patio. Friendly and helpful service. No rushing or pressured upselling. Ordered the Beef dinner. Braised beef. Brisket. Unfortunately it was pulled. I would have preferred sliced. No big deal. It was very tasty, moist and tender. Actually everything on the plate was very good. Background music a little too loud for conversation but maybe it cuts down on arguments. Maybe it also depends on where you are seated. Will definitely be returning.

Excellent coffee and lunch menu. They have two types of espresso beans you can choose from, a “dark” and a “light” espresso, depending on your taste on coffee. Pretty neat! The venue is extremely well decorated, with quite the selection of records playing in the background, coming out of a beautiful DJ booth and Big wood speakers attached to the wall. Lunch was very well made and quite tasty. We had the Brisket Sandwich with a side of soup, and the burger with a kale Caesar salad. The service was exceptional, the barista was helpful with the menu, engaged in friendly conversation, and laid out some top class espresso drinks. This is definitely one of my new favourite spots in Hamilton! We will be coming back soon!

Great food, great service. My only concern is food hygiene. The concept of the open visible kitchen makes the customers see what going on in the kitchen. The chefs are always on their phones texting or doing their stuff between orders and than with those hands without proper hand washing procedures they make our food. I have seen them touching their faces, their phones, their other stuff and than making my food which disgusts me. I’m genuinely sorry for the bad review as I love coming here and enjoying your food and atmosphere but I hope you guys will work on some food hygiene as well.

Had another great stop in at Bernie's for the Christmas edition of the Ottawa Street Beer crawl. Bernie's has such an upbeat lively vibe with space for bigger groups (a reservation would be a good idea) and lots of space for small groups. Lots of beer on tap, although our recurring visits are generally for the Beer crawls, so our choices are often the guest brews. Great wings (according to my kid)! And from our seats near the kitchen, we saw lots of great looking and great smelling food being served up. Always a good time!

Had a great dinner with the family here. Brought my dog as well as they have a dog friendly patio and even brought her a bowl of water. Everyone had a good dinner. For appetizer we had wings and dip trio. The wings were crispy and hot. The dip was enough as a meal for two people. I had the club sandwich which was the best I've had in Hamilton. Fries are thick and properly crispy. I just needed some garlic mayo and it would have been even better.

My girlfriend and I have gone to Bernie's a few times now and enjoy their monday special of $10/lb wings. We decided to call for pickup and ordered 3 pounds and were told $38 on the phone. Come to my surprise after driving across town that my order was now $62 and that they "don't do specials on pickups" which I was never told on the phone, not listed on their website or social medias. We feel manipulated and would not have ordered if we had know. Having a really hard time imagining we will be going back.

Super cool Hammertown tavern. Food was great. Smashburger was world class and the fries were some of the best I have had in a longer time. Wife had the chefs special chicken burger and said it was phenomenal. Claire our waitress was so friendly and made great suggesting. Food came out at perfect pace. Deep fried spaghetti was surprisingly tasty. We will be back.

Good trendy place. The vive, atmosphere and service are good. Food and drinks. They are definitely on the higher side. I can’t really justify flavour/price ratio. The test is not bad, however, for the price paid, I can’t justify it. I ordered the pizza (8x10) and it is technically 2 slices for $24 1 beer $10 + $24 pizza (portion for 1) = $34+tip and taxes= total $45 Again $45 for what is the equivalent of 2 slices of pizza and one beer. I would go back but definitely not to eat. Great place to grab one drink and that’s it.

Bernie's was a very pleasant surprise. Went for father's day and ordered from the brunch menu and wasn't disappointed. Had the Bernie's Benny( eggs Benedict with braided beef) it was excellent. My wife had the same but with the mushroom medley instead of the beef. Their home fries are amazing!! My only complaint would be not enough hollandaise and the eggs were a little over cooked and no decaf coffee. Everything else was great!

A bunch of guys needed a place to eat before a Forge game so we tried Bernie’s, we’re glad we did. A few had Shorty’s pizza, which is always good, and the rest of us had the beef on weck. As a Buffalo transplant, I will say it isn’t exactly the same as WNY, but it was delicious and I plan on going back to have another. The girls who took care of us were great, the beer selection is good and the place has a good vibe, they even played some pretty good new alternative tunes. Definitely recommended!

  • Joe Hirani

Best place ever . Talk to Mitch he's a sweetheart tell him joe from Available Roofing sent you . I had the pizza and wing combo Thursdays the pizza I can take intravenously the wings are double cooked they cook them at a lower temperature first and then a higher temperature to crisp them that's a culinary delight if you want an amazing foodie experience this place is a must go. This place is the top of the pops I can't stress enough the importance of eating here,

Great restaurant and a nice addition to the neighborhood. Both indoor and outdoor seating area available with a nice size patio at the back. Staff is friendly and food is solid. Great little place, nice to see creative and awesome restaurant concepts coming into areas where they don't price out locals. A fantastic complete dining experience with fresh and delicious food, great and friendly service, and a wonderful back patio. All servers, cooks, and patrons seemed to be taking covid health protocols seriously which made dining comfortable for my first time ever going there! Win definitely be back

This review is for delivered food. I had a hard time deciding how to rate this place because it had both the best pierogies I've had (the pork and onion ones are heavenly) and also possibly the driest brisket I've ever had. Other standout items: The burger and hot chicken wings. Those are what I'd focus on if I ordered again. Prices are fine. Packing was good and presentation was excellent for delivered food.

  • Carly Wood

Food is fantastic. Unfortunately, we had a server with long blond hair who was super rude for no reason. Kind of ruined the experience… when we asked her if there were wings coming she gave us a dirty look and said “I don’t know, are there?”. Had a lovely time last time but she just ruined it. Wings were delicious!

Great atmosphere. A bit pricey. The mushroom toast was really good but so rich, I would suggest to make it a smaller less expensive portion maybe. Salad was really good! Another time we went with friends and sat in the booth watching baseball. Pizza was great - loved the sesame seed crust. Poutine was good, expecting more cheese for the price maybe.

Great to eat and grab some beers after a Ticats or Forge game as it is a short walk from Tim Hortons Field. Sausage and meet platters are both really good. Prices are very reasonable, they even have $5 tall boys on the regular menu. I do wish they had a schnitzel platter as it only comes on a bunch. Also has a great patio. Highly recommended!

Had been following this spot on IG for some time, and finally was able to visit. So glad I did! Great spot for trying out new beers (both craft and German imports; go for the 20oz pour!). The food was incredible, and reasonably priced. I'll be going back ASAP to try out the smoked meat sandwich, and order the spiced rice again. 10/10

Portions are very generous and food is clearly fresh and house made. Beer list is comprehensive for its size. Burger and pint for $15 is a solid deal, the mushroom toast is piled high with mushrooms, arugula and ricotta. The deviled eggs are a must! Service is fast and frieldly; we will be back!
