In a city full of coffee shops with new ones added almost daily, how do you stand out and deliver a quality atmosphere, an oasis of seclusion filled with unique, weird and a hint of the absurd, and most importantly good and amazing coffee. Simple! Look towards black hole coffee. Located in Montrose, this local beloved coffee shop has been a hangout spot for more than a decade. Coffee is the main stay accompanied by baked goods from local partners. The shop also attracts food truck options which supplement the menu with savory delights. The coffee menu offers both coffee house favorites and some unique offerings, including my favorite cajeta latte (served both iced and hot). There is plenty of seating accompanied by low slung ceilings and a true coffee shop atmosphere. The shop offers its own version of nitro brew, and kombucha. The coffee shop also hosts events throughout the year which you can follow on their online page. A good place to hangout, have a coffee, hangout by yourself or friends, and have a great cup of coffee.

Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The gentleman at the counter was friendly and helped me get signed into the Wi-Fi and even checked later on to make sure I was still connected. The breakfast tacos that I ordered from the food truck were amazing!! Chorizo, eggs and potatoes was phenomenal, and I really enjoyed the bacon and eggs taco as well. Will be back to chill soon...I forgot to discuss the iced coffee which was excellent, and I appreciate the free water to stay hydrated. Relaxed and pleasant experience. Just an update: Been a minute since I last went, and when I came in this morning, my server at the register remembered what I always ordered and that meant a lot to me regarding the attention to detail. Just posted a picture with an empty plate that just had the contents of a Strawberry Cream Danish, and it was soo good that I ate it quickly and forgot to show, but I think that speaks for itself. Excellent.

This is such a nice place to drink a chai, read a book, and enjoy a calm atmosphere. The person making the drinks is spectacular at what they do - I have thought about my chai several days since going! They have nonbinary bathrooms, which is always nice, and the insides are covered with art and stickers. There are several comfy couches to choose from inside, in addition to a couple of tables and chairs outside. There aren't a ton of bright colors, and the music isn't very loud either. Definitely a place to enjoy some solid downtime.

On a Friday late afternoon, it's busy. Like 95% occupied inside. Towards the evening, there's less people. There’s outdoor seating with a big fan. Recommend cajeta latte for coffee drinkers. It has a nice flavor. Parking in front of the coffee shop is limited but street parking is available. It's located in a nice residential area. If you need quietness, this isn’t the place for that. It's a mix of people working on their laptops and having discussions with friends/associates. The bathrooms are decent and not filthy. One thing that sucks is the wifi is limited to 1 hour. Also, there is a limited amount of outlets.

Went here on vacation, great chill hippy vibes, I sat inside and outside before the Houston heat started. The coffee was ok, I drank all of it and it didn't make my stomach bubble afterwards like trying new coffee usually does to me. I didn't use creamer I used their homemade French vanilla syrup. I had to ask for more because I couldn't taste any sweetness. Overall the price was budget friendly and the cups were really nice and high quality feeling. There was actually a taco truck in the parking lot open for breakfast which was cool.

***NOT FOR STUDYING / MEETINGS / COMPUTER WORK IF YOU NEED TO USE THEIR WIFI*** I came here as it’s a coffee house and it has great reviews for studying and remote workers, but I’m very disappointed that it’s only an hour at a time on the WiFi per purchase. It’s unfortunate because class starts online in less than an hour and due to traffic, it’ll take me an hour to go across town to my usual spot. I won’t be coming back. As a disclaimer, I spend when I patronize a business as I’m not there to just suck up the WiFi and take up seats for other paying customers. Otherwise, nice layout and spacious and great prices.

I looked up a good place to read and this place popped up! It has an old school feel to it. Good service and decent coffee. At one point or another they turned the music up and I asked them to turn it down a bit and they did. So over all it was a great experience. Will be coming back. I like that it's off the beaten path so it's not over crowded.

I walked in to this coffee place, with high hopes due to some of the reviews I read. Once I ordered and said “Thank you ma’am” the She/He/It raised their voice causing a loud scene saying “I’m not a woman” although this isn’t an issue I believe the person shouldn’t have caused a scene, I said “sorry” and got my teas. The bathrooms were very clammy and not very nice. Wifi was slow and unusable for studying, not enough tables for studying, and couches were uncomfortable.Quite an awkward experience, will not be coming back. (The teas were watered down)

It was pretty nice as coffee shops go. Parking can be a problem during peak hours. Great decorating. Comfortable furniture earned some major points! Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. The staff were not very engaging, but they were courteous. Had a cortado with an extra shot and a couple cookies. Both very good. All in all, I had been planning to visit for some time to see if it would be a go-to spot for sit-down creative work, so I was a bit disappointed with the overall vibe and experience. But it is a great shop, and I would check it out just to see if it is your thing. Edit: Parking and seating seems to be an issue most of the time.

  • James Bond

Don't get me wrong: Black Hole Coffee has the best atmosphere of any coffee shop in Houston in my opinion. I love the comfortable furniture, the coffee is pretty good, and the music is well chosen. However, it really bothers me that they don't display price tags for food items. I think this is a shady business practice. Customers should be able to make informed choices about what they buy, and it is embarrassing to have to ask (especially if there is a line). If they address this issue, which has persisted for years, I will edit my review and change it to five stars.

The guy working at 1:57 pm on Wednesday November 2nd 2022 should learn to say “please” or “thank you” or at least learn some basic customer service etiquette. Its disheartening to spend money somewhere only to be talked to like you are an inconvenience. Ill never shop here again. As much as I like to stay local, we just moved to the area and this was the first instance I’ve had where someone was this rude. I dunno maybe he owns the place and is super wealthy so he doesn’t need my business. But if he is not the owner, I would hope the owner could see what a liability having this type of employee representing you can be.

  • Stephanie

Live right next door to this coffee shop but will absolutely drive across town to go somewhere else to buy coffee. Have been here multiple times and they have the absolute rudest baristas working. I do enjoy their Cajeta Latte - but for me it’s always the guys that work in the morning who don’t even care to be there. Not only that they always seem to cut me off when I’m not even done ordering. It’s been multiple times! Which is why I’m choosing to write this review. Support local but not this place. I stand by that.

If you are a sullen trust fund kid of any age, this is the place to be. Otherwise, not so much. The coffee was about the same as one would get at a convenience store at 2 am: acrid, over-extracted coffee that probably wasn't very good 4 hours ago when it was brewed. Cream dispenser was empty. The trust fund kids flock to this place, but I am quite certain they don't come for the coffee. Not recommended.

This was the second time I've been here and during both experiences the employees were rude and short, I don't know why this place has such high stars. Today, I asked the cashier if the vegan burrito or harvest moon sandwich was better and his response was, "I don't know. I don't like either." Then he just walked to the case waiting for me to choose which one. Dude, if you can't pleasantly answer that question, don't work in the service industry. The lady behind me even raised her eyebrows at the interaction.

The ONLY reason I am giving a three star review is because the people working there were very nice and friendly. Now for the rest. First, it feels dirty inside. Seems like it could use a really good scrub down. Second, the coffee had a burnt taste and just wasn't that good. Third, the wifi is so tight you can't even listen to Pandora or Spotify. If you are going to regulate time on wifi, which I totally get, at least offer better wifi service. Yeah, I don't think I'll be back but I'm sure they don't really care. LOL

  • Amr Radwan

I’ve been coming here for 10 years. Sometimes I go out of my way, sometimes it’s convenient. Regardless, being able to get coffee or a solid espresso drink at 0630, while interacting with an amazing staff is always a plus. I genuinely hate taking my drink to go, since the space is conducive to on site consumption. If you have not been here yet, you are really missing out, and if you have been, you know why.

I called ahead and asked to speak to a manager for job openings and when I called I simply asked "May I speak to a manager if there's one there?" and was cut off immediately at the end of my sentence with, "NO what are you calling about?" In an annoyed manner like a Starbucks employee who didn't get a tip. Yeah whatever I guess. I hung up immediately, I'm not speaking to anyone like that. I don't even want to go there to get coffee anymore. I get coffee shops are busy but geez you know?

  • Amy Smith

I'd say they have the best cold brew in town. Atmosphere is pleasant, generally pretty relaxed. Good for sitting an chatting with friends, but also for studying. It's nice and quiet since its nestled in a neighborhood, rather than on a busy street. I've read in reviews that the staff is rude, and I'd say that's only partly true, It comes across to me that they are just laid back and keeping things simple, so they're not very bubbly or chatty. Personally I've never had an issue.

  • Anais Roux

Not the best place. The drinks the woman gave us were on the verge of being expired, and the place was sooo cold ( the AC was blasting cold air in mid december). I came there to work for about an hour but clearly it’s not the right place to do so. My table was wobbly and not that great of a quality. I was also writing on a piece of paper and i do not recommend doing so - the light is soo dimed that i felt like i need to turn on my phone flashlight in order to not hurt my eyes.

  • Colin Hooper

Great espresso and atmosphere. Easy parking. House-made syrups. Very comfortable vibe. I had an iced americano per the barista's recommendation and it had a nice, smoky/cereal flavor that didn't sour. They know what they're about here.

EDITED:::: Here today and AC is amazing!! Y'all come back!!!! Great place. Good vibes! I absolutely LOVE this place! One caveat. It is sooooo freaking hot!! Seriously it's causing people to get up and leave which makes me sad because the place is so awesome. I have found a temporary solution to my problem but it's Houston Texas's C'mon. Myself and another guy asked and the worker just said that the air conditioning was on.... My solution is my cute little fan!

For starters, it is difficult to find parking here, which I would forgive if the coffee was actually good. I ordered a cortado and it really lacked any coffee flavor. It was more like foamed milk with a bitter aftertaste. It wasn't even worth finishing the small glass. I would not come here again. Points for a decent atmosphere and presentation but I really can't recommend the coffee, at least the cortado.

  • ALICIA COLE

It is pretty fair. I couldn't complain about this place. Once the doors opened up they were ready to take orders. I ordered an iced Vanilla Lavender Latte and it was delicious! Sat around on the sofa and had a small conversation with a friend. Once done was out and ready to start my morning.

Black hole!! If you want to study but want to do so in your own little orb of solitude and solace, enter the black hole. The baristas are usually working solo, so they are all magicians because there's no way you can make all those drinks and take orders in the speed that they manage to do so, unless they, of course, dabble in the dark arts.

Mediocre drinks, bratty know nothing know it all burnouts behind the counter, dirty to the point where you have to worry about bringing home bedbugs/body lice. The only reason to go here is to get the satisfaction of watching nasty adult children get upset when you don’t give a 20% tip. Their tuna salad isn’t bad but that is made off site.

The staff was friendly and the coffee was decent. The atmosphere was a bit "boring" for lack of a better word. If you need a place to do homework/work then this may be it. Came here to study with a friend. The service was nice and so was the cafe latte. It actually tasted as a cafe latte should taste! I loved the art, music, and vibe here. I understand why there is a 2 hr limit for internet. I am sure it's not fair to new customers especially if the business gets crowded. My only complaint would be the table was wobbly.

I was visiting first time with my close friend. I ordered an iced mocha latte and my friend had a hot matcha latte. Mine was just okay, but my friend's was barely lukewarm. The inside made me feel claustrophobic, so we left. I think this is a mid place, and there are better options elsewhere.

Good coffee, good scone, quick service, and plenty of space. Nothing was great, though. I was a bit disappointed when I saw so few food options. I chose this place because I was under the impression they had lots of food options. Arrived at 9:30, so it’s not like we got there super late and everything was gone. Overall, everything was good, and I’d try it again.

Two words: Cajeta latte (hot). I only come here for this drink because it is such a treat! If you are not familiar with cajeta, it is basically caramel that is made with goat's milk. Trust me, it is very good. I prefer it hot over iced. The place itself has great ambience if you need to get work done or study. Great neighborhood café!

  • Margaret Gullion

Great little neighborhood spot, everyone inside responsibly wearing a mask, seating spaced out. Good music and good coffee. Plenty of non-dairy milk options. Would be better if there were more covered seating outside and wifi that lasted longer than an hour, but otherwise a good spot to hangout, read, or do a bit of work.

  • Billy Thomas

I absolutely love this coffee shop.. The coffee shop has a very comfortable, cozy, peaceful, and safe feel... It is located in an area that has gorgeous landscape and is rather historical. The prices are reasonable and they only accept cashless methods of payment.. The staff members are courteous, friendly and polite..

  • G

Solid coffee shop. Wi-fi is fast. Tried the hot chocolate. It was good and rich. The whip cream was thick and sweet. Interior is a little too dark for my liking. Music was also too loud for me, but that could have just been where I was sitting. They have some of the best hours I’ve seen. They close at midnight.

Nice spot for a good late hot or iced. Not to complicated just simple lattes. Free WiFi with purchase and they usually have a good food truck outside. Think taco being my favorite. Also they only accept cards for safety reasons.

Really cozy coffee shop with a chill vibe. The people working there were alright, but the quality of their drinks was great. Definitely a good spot to hang out over a drink. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well. Their baked goods are fresh and unique, so if something looks tasty give it a try.

This place is absolutely horrible. They only let you use the Wi-Fi for one hour after you purchase some thing and the funny thing is the Wi-Fi doesn’t even work for that hour. I will definitely be contacting my bank to get my money back. Thank you for wasting my time and money, black hole coffee.

The coffee is decent (probably caters more toward flavored than unflavored) and so are the pastries. However, it is a very nice place to meet friends, have a date, or just sit and read a book.

Honestly the staff wasn't the nicest. As a barista I understand the stress, but; genuinely it's not that hard to be kind. The coffee was pretty good, pleasant music, and peaceful atmosphere.

  • Emily Counts

Good wine, great kombucha and little disappointing hummus snack (it was not very fresh). Cute vibe and lowkey!

Comfy study environment, great selection of coffee, and amazing prices. Bought a good quality bottle of red wine for $15, which isn’t much more than you’d buy it for at a liquor store

  • Dennis Reyna

A very nice place with eclectic seating and art; giving that independent coffee house vibe. Limited parking, but still worth it.

Some of the best coffee and cozy atmosphere, we definitely love grabbing a cup and hanging out on the couch. Staff is super friendly, too!

Coffee in the manor. Great coffee . Nice beer selection. A good place to hang with friends. Parking a challenge during peak hours. They host the occasional art market and band

A delightful coffee shop with a wide selection of beans from around the world. The latte art is impressive, and the staff is attentive. Great spot for Instagram-worthy photos!

Great hidden spot for coffee. Jalapeño cheddar scone was filling but still light. Cold brew coffee on tap was a pleasant surprise. Downside was customers smoking out front.

  • Alexander Giraldi

Great location, but parking is limited. The smallest double cappuccino I ever had. My bill came out to be around $6 dollars. The taste of the coffee was OK but not great.

Did not try any good. But the coffee was very good. Great little atmosphere.

I found this gem when I was asked to meet up somewhere close to Hwy 59. The staff was courteous and the atmosphere was way cool. I luv welcoming places like this.

Amazing coffee! We got a brown sugar and lavender latte and it tasted so fresh and authentic. I love a coffee shop with homemade syrups! Definitely coming back!

  • Arley's Journey

Hilariously relaxing atmosphere ☕️ I ordered a Cold Brew and sat next to Lindsey Lohan playing Sudoku Highly recommend for focused study sessions

  • Michelle Sanchez

I'm giving the 2nd star just because the atmosphere is cute, but the drinks were pretty bad. Espresso tasted burnt and acidic, while matcha was flavorless.

  • Adam Schlegel

Great coffee and atmosphere. Asked for random drink and it was awesome! Can get packed at peak times.

Cozy couches and a nice outdoor area make this a great place to read, meet with friends, or get some work done. Try the cajeta latte, it's a bit caramel-y.

  • Ana Leticia De León

Their nitro cold brew is ridiculously good! They don't have hot food but their wraps, salads and pastries do the job for a lovely afternoon with friends.

  • Yaser

Coffee is ok, the vibe is nice but a bit too hot.

Excellent coffee shop with laid back vibes. Great pastries and snacks, wine and Champaign. Great spot to connect to work, school, or social networks.

So so , it's ok place however the coffee is not that great and their sandwich had no taste at all. It seems they have no idea about sandwich at all

  • Yizbeleni Garcia

The coffee was great, if you're unsure what to order the baristas are very helpful and kind.
