"Pick up your garbage and leave..." - Broom Wagon Cyclery Serviceman ______________ On Thursday April 16th at about 3:30pm I entered Broom Wagon Cyclery with a flat tire on my bike. I bought a new tube and began replacing the flat on my back tire. I've only fixed flats a couple of times before so it took me a little time. I did this in an open space near the entrance, which the staff gave me permission to do. It wasn't a busy day. Maybe two people entered while I was working on my bike. As I was putting the wheel back onto my bike, the serviceman from the back of the shop tapped me on the shoulder, looked me straight in the eyes, and said "pick up your garbage and leave. You are in the way of customers." I asked him why he was being rude, then accused me of being rude for working on my bike in the store. I went outside to finish replacing the wheel, then returned to talk to the serviceman. I apologized for doing work on my bike in the store but told him that he had been inappropriate and that I did not appreciate his service... To which he responded "I did not serve you." I wouldn't have been offended if he had asked me to leave politely. Instead I was treated with a surprising amount of disrespect. As a cyclist in Toronto, I've only encountered pleasant people in the cycling community. This was not reflected in the attitude I received from the serviceman at Broom Wagon Cyclery.
I'm very happy Broom Wagon Cyclery is my neighbourhood shop! Not only is it convenient, the quality of the repairs and their product offering is bar none. I know people who travel across the city to visit Broom Wagon Cyclery and others should consider to do the same. I have both purchased my bikes and had them repaired/maintained (commuter and MTB) at BWC and I am satisfied every time. Marty has definitely used his experience and research to curate bikes that are best for the Toronto cyclist. He thinks about the quality of component parts and how the bike will fare on Toronto roads and weather. So most of your homework has been done for you once you walk in the store, you just have to choose the bike. It's refreshing to have someone focused on quality and to me that's the most important part when you're making a bike purchase or fix.
I had an issue with my bike after another shop did a tune up. Whatever they gave back to me was apparently "normal". That other shop didn't even try to look at my bike again after they returned it to me. I wanted a second opinion, so I brought it to Broom Wagon for their thoughts. These guys were amazing. Super transparent and I felt like they actually gave me their full attention and honest opinions. They even called me during the week to keep me updated on what was going on with my bike. When I got my bike back, it was perfect! They fixed all of the issues. I'm definitely going to go here for all my future bike needs (road bikes and mountain bikes). These guys are awesome. Definitely going to tell all my friends to come here too!
This is definitely a great shop and I'll always go here to service my bike. The guy that fixed my bike took his time to answer some questions I had, was very nice and went the extra mile to help fix a kick stand issue I had. I had a few questions about the mechanics of my bike's gear and he was really patient and nice in answering (I'm not really a bike expert). He explained the costs of the repair and the prices were very reasonable. Other shops in the neighbourhood I've been to have been rude or standoffish or generally disinterested in helping, so I'm so glad to have a repair shop nearby with such kind and welcoming experts!
They're not trusworthy. I bought a bike from Marketplace and the back tire was flat. When I brought it to BW they had to do some other repairs and they gave me a quote of $95. After 7 days, they called me to go and pickup the bike. I paid them and I left. Five minutes after I left I realized that the back tire was flat AGAIN. When I brought it back they fix it right away, but they asked me to pay them extra - for something they were supposed to do in the first place. I won't be coming back, and I'm dissapointed because I live in the area and I want to support local businesses.
I have used the Broom Wagon Cyclery several times and found the owner and the bike mechanic both helpful and wonderful to speak with regarding everything from mountain biking, fat tire bikes, and commuter bikes. Theo, the bike mechanic, is particularly helpful with practical solutions and gone over and above what is necessary many a time. It is hard to find a bike mechanic in the area that one can trust what with places often hiring inexperienced workers and/or having so many repairs to do that the personal touch gets lost in the shuffle.
I've been here a few times - once to buy a basket, once to exchange gifted gloves, and a few times I've sought help by phone. Every interaction has been friendly, honest, informative, and solution-oriented (not sales-oriented, perhaps that's why they suggested tires instead of a whole bike for the other reviewer). I found out about Broom Wagon because it's my dad's LBS, but despite the added distance it is becoming mine as well. They're good people, plain and simple.
Haven't been in for a little while, but I did a bit of bike maintenance on my ride recently on my own, and I forget just how good this place is. Don't trust your bike to just anyplace. Bring it here: you know it will be fixed right, no upsell, and with a dedicated expertise that is really, really uncommon. I can't tell you how many places have "fixed" my bike, only for me to have to redo the repair at home. This place is the place to go. Hands down. It's a gem.
I walked into the shop with my bike, just after they opened at 11am and asked whether they would fix a flat right away. They did that on the spot (which I did not necessarily expect since these folks have work lined up to fill the full day). As I watched, they let me make the decision to replace the tire or just patch it, and they gave me some useful advice regarding tire repair. Things worked out well and I pedaled away into a beautiful day. Thank you.
Broom Wagon is my local bike shop, and I'm frankly a fan. I started with them as a putterer on my bike and have since gotten more and more serious into the sport. Staff there are friendly, laid back, and are interested in giving good advice, appropriate to the level of the rider. Repairs are done efficiently and on time, and prices in the shop are comparable to elsewhere. Nice people, good service, happy to recommend the shop to the General Public.
I asked them to change my tires, because both of them were losing air. They quoted me $95. Came back after 6-days. Tires were not changed, he told me that they put some air and for 4 days they were ok. They had to do other repairs so I paid them the $95. After riding the bike for 200m both of my tires started losing air. Brought it back and they charged me again haha These guys are clowns - Good luck keeping clients with this attitude and sevices.
Went in to get the nut from my front wheel replaced. They tried on a few, found the right one and tightened it. That cost me $5 in labour. Would have installed it myself if I had known that thirty seconds of tightening after finding the right one was going to cost that much. I know it's not a lot of money but $10 for less than two minutes of work doesn't feel right. Way over priced. Costs were not discussed up front.
Im sure its a reputable shop but the 3 separate times I've been in this shop and have spent at least $100 plus ive gotten crappy service, condescending attitudes and a sense that they are genuinely out to screw over the customer. Im never going back to this shop. Charged me $60 for 1 flat tire and im pretty certain they loosened my crank shaft on my new bike to get me back in to spend more $$. Sheisters!!
Marty provided exceptional service. I was interested in a super expensive bike but Marty asked me lots of questions and was able to convince me that I would be overspending if I purchased the one I was originally interested in. He showed me a bike that was more suitable for my needs and saved me $600. I have never met a more honest shop keeper. I recommend his shop to everyone!!!!
This shop never ceases to amaze me. I had to have my bike tuned and brakes replaced. They were able to salvage and use some of my parts to save me money and completed the job sooner than quoted. I have been going to the shop since it opened and Marty has always been professional, honest, and fair with his pricing. Best bike shop in Toronto!!!!!!!!!!
I just got my new bike and love it. As someone living close to the Broom Wagon Cyclery, I wanted to support local business but mostly I wanted to find a great bike store. This is it. Service is exceptional, knowledgable, not pushy and patient. I appreciated the time they gave me to pick the right bike for me. Would highly recommend this great shop.
I just got my flat tires pumping up there as my air pump broke. I didn’t want to buy another air pump because I am only in Toronto for a little while. The staff helped me and didn’t ask for money at first, then I asked him how much, he said I could give him $1 if I liked. Of course! Thanks and now I can bike around again …
I brought my road bike in when the shifting started to get a little jinky, and they were able to get it running like new again! Prices are very reasonable, and service was quick and friendly. They were honest with me about what the bike needed and made sure I didn't pay for anything unneccesary. Will happily come back!
A great community bike shop. So happy it moved into the neighbourhood. We have been going to Broom Wagon since it opened 5 years ago. Marty and Theo have serviced many of our bikes, always to a very high standard. Their attention to detail is like no other. It is great to have a such a solid local bike shop.
Had a little spill in the mud at Monarch Park and warped the back tire. I knew if I took it to where I bought it they'd hose me for a new wheel, tire etc .... My wife told me to take it to Broom Wagon and rather than make me buy a new wheel they fixed the existing, gave my bike the once over and good to go .
Brought my bike in to have some new breaks and housing installed and they did a great job, also true’d my rear wheel and fixed the issues the last shop I brought my bike to left me with for free! She’s riding like a beast now. Will definitely bring my bike back for tune ups and any other service!
came in 15 minutes before closing, the day before leaving on a bike tour. Broom Wagon Cyclery helped me out despite how late it was. Didn't charge me since it was such a minor adjustment (30 second fix). In other dealings with them they have been knowledgeable and honest. Highly recommend.
There is no comfort like the comfort of being able to trust your LBS. After a terrible experience with another shop in the area, I went to Broom Wagon and have since become a loyal customer. They are accommodating, up front, and trustworthy. What more can you ask for from your LBS?
I've been here a half a dozen times to buy accessories and get some small repairs and tuneups. The guys have always been very helpful, professional and steered me towards the best solution, not the the most expensive one. I trust them with my bike and my wallet.
amazing service!! the guy who helped me was super to the point, explained the issue to me clearly, and didn’t mind me asking a couple dumb questions. highly recommend this place if you’re having an issue with your bike, whatever it may be :)
Brought my sons bike in an old Mountain Bike.. Instead of telling me to scrap it, they asked me to spend over 100 dollars for new slimmer tires.. What a waste of money... bike fell apart after one use, the gears locked up... had to walk the
Just picked up my electric bike. The cable had snapped and to my surprise they had not only replaced the cable but tightened up the other brake too. I felt safe while riding the bike home. The price was fair too. $25 to replace the broken
Came in here about 6 years back for a tire change, they ended up taking my Shimano 8 gear and shifter, I haven't used the bike over the years and this summer I felt something off as I wasn't able to change gears, took it to my local bike
My rear rack had lost a screw and the support was slipping into my gears making it dangerous to ride. I popped in after stopping at the hardware store across the street (no luck there) thanks to a kind recommendation of another customer.
Was quoted $70, wasn't told about any major changes to the quote, and ended up receiving a bill for $180. The nearly two weeks late didn't bother me but when piled on to the unexpected charge it succumbs to an overall terrible experience.
Marty was super helpful when I brought my bike in to have the handlebars swapped out (I was tired of dropbars in the city.) He had the fix done in under a week and was very fair with pricing. He even used an old bar to save me some money.
Attitude is very important as much as their service. I couldn't get any service for my e-bike, but that's okay if they don't have it. But they have a rude attitude obviously if you need help with your e-bike.
Second visit and second time they've demonstrated rudeness for unfamiliarity with bicycling knowledge. They unfortunately appear to be a bike shop for "cyclists ". Too much arrogance.
the BEST cycle shop on the Danforth . no doubt. Quick repairs and good service.. repairs were done very well without pushy up selling. Unlike one of their neighbour cycle shops .
EXPENSIVE AS HELL! I asked to unscrew the cassette of my rear wheel, giving him the wheel already disassembled from my bike and the socket in order to do it. He asked me 15
Walked in today needing my back tire replaced - they were able to do it on the spot for a very fair price. Will return for more repairs and maintenance for sure.
Friendly staff and good service. Just needed a flat fix but left with a good impression. I'll be coming back again for any future repairs.
Great work, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. This is my go to bike shop for anything that's beyond my capabilities.
Was just told that they can’t be bothered with e-bikes
Great local bike shop. Friendly, knowledgeable staff.
