Not as good as I was hoping for. Information plaques (which are rare in the first place) are switched between artifacts. Spellings are wrong in multiple places. (Male armour instead of Mail armour, for instance) Some pieces are missing translations, specially in the hallway to the sculpture room. Artifact names are wrong. Sword instead of punch dagger. Bullet instead of cannonball. The plaques are so generic - Painting. Gun. Sword. Drum. Flute. Bangles. Jewelry. Pottery. That's all you can learn from the plaques. It's not a museum, it's a pictionary. Here's one word you can look up in the dictionary, Dept. Of Archeology, 'Juvenile!'. A museum is a place to learn about our culture, history and the human story. It's not a place to gawk at random artifacts with multitudes of mistakes all over, and come out as a misinformed citizen. We should be proud of our heritage, and that includes collecting and dispersing knowledge that is irrefutable, verified, authentic and reliable. Very poor job by the department. PS: The sculptures and painting collections are very good, but missing vital information like dates, places of origin, or any other historical context.
This museum in Bangalore city is a storehouse of rich historical and cultural significance. Located at the Kasturba Gandhi road, this prime location was established early in 1865. Encompassing a wide arena consisting of 18 galleries, with each of them housing their own special domain of interest, this museum is an apt place for history buffs and the curious to satisfy their innate quest for knowledge. This structure houses a multitude of artifacts like art, pottery, coins from different eras in history like that of the early Mohenjodaro, Vijyanagar and the Chandravalli period. With separate sections dedicated to numismatics, sculpting, geology, textiles etc. this is the apt place to spend time in to gather insight on the impact of our existence in the world. This museum has got a separate wing which has a collection of about 600 paintings called the Venkatappa Art Gallery to mesmerize art lovers.

This is archeological museum has two floor, ground floor houses some of the ancient relics from pre historic to recent past. You will find the items of Mohenjo-Daro to Chandravalli period. The way the things presented here needs an update. Needs a complete makeover, can be portrayed based on time line. There is a separate sculpture section. The main attraction being Halmidi inscription and Begur inscriptions. The top floor has interesting Mysuru artwork and Daccani art works. The audio guide system was also not available. Although it was present before. Needs to be updated. Behind the museum, you will find more sculptures in a open area put up for display. Overall, a great experience as a history enthusiast. You can visit, Vekantappa Art Galary, with the same ticket. The parking is not free, they charge nominal even after being a visitor to the museum.

If you have kids who are in middle or high school, you really should plan a visit here. It's not like one of those archaic irrelevant museums. The illustrations and working demos make learning quite simple and fun. They have various sections spread across 4 floors, and the maintenance is rather good. Some of the models were not working which needs to be fixed. We sat through a 4D show as well, which was interesting, but a bit outdated compared to it's more modern rivals across malls in Bangalore. Could see a lot of families from outside Bangalore at the museum. What's more, it is right next to the historical museum, chinnaswamy stadium, the aquarium and cubbon park so one can spend a day walking around this area and club it with some shopping and dining out. Not a bad option for families with kids, and really easy on the pocket too.
A pretty good place to explore a great collection of archaeological remains and artifacts of historical India. The collection in particular include antique sculptures, stone inscriptions, ancient weapons, historical paintings, old musical instruments etc. The museum is quite informative - every archaeological object is labeled with a details depicting its ancient name and the time period it existed in. The museum is well maintained with high degree of cleanliness. And yes, don't forget to roam over the beautiful garden on the back side of museum that is equipped with another set of ancient sculptures of Hindu deities and animals. Overall, this is an an amazing and informative place for history lovers. The entry fee to the museum is very reasonable and photography is allowed inside.
It's a good collection of old artefacts used by ancient human settlements. These are found after excavation at various sites in Karnataka state and beyond. They are ranging from as old as 3000 BC. Some are even older. It gives us a glimpse of how humans might have been living around 5000 years ago. The weapon display is nice. There are different weapons and paintings from which we easily understand the context how these weapons were the need of the hour in those days. There are different sections, one of the section contains beautiful paintings of Gods in different art styles. A nice day spent getting lost in the history and getting new insights.
If you like history, antiques then this museum is a great place to be..Regional history is nicely covered..you get to see statues, sculptures, weapons, models of forts, maps, Manuscripts, paintings, musical instruments of those times..there are 2 sections of the Museum and outside these buildings there is a small garden type section where statues/sculptures are kept in the open. Weekends tend to be crowded. Entry fee is minimal charges. Although certain section of exhibits have great lighting and aesthetics, rest of the museum looks like it could undergo renovation. If visiting Cubbon park, you could also visit this museum as well.
This is a government museum, just next to visweswaraya industrial museum..this building is very much visible from road as this building is unique with European architecture built by Mysore wadiyears... One of the oldest museum in Karnataka, you get to see hoysala time sculptures paintings and other masterpieces of arts and artefacts...it is open on weekdays from 10am -5 pm..but closed on weekends,if you are planning to visit, ensure that you are there at 10am because it takes three hours to complete this museum and Venkatappa art gallery
The museum has two exhibition floors which are divided into 18 galleries. The galleries cover sections that span sculpture, natural history, geology, art, music and numismatics. The museum is an archaeological museum and has a rare collection of archaeological and geological artifacts including old jewellery, sculpture, coins and inscriptions. The museum has 70 paintings, 84 sculptures, and hundreds of other artifacts, some of which unique to the museum. The museum has sculpture from the Hoysala, Gandhara and Nolamba periods.
Its a good place to learn in bengaluru .....there are many things to see in the both Venkatappa art gallery and archaeology museum.....I think its a very good place for researchers.. You will get lot of knowledge if u come here...also they have provided audio links to know the history of particular things... Its a very good facility....also there is a canteen here... So that you don't have to go outside to eat..its a very good place to bring your kids Overall a good experience here✌
Beautiful and well maintained.... this Neo-Classical Colonial Ensemble .... one of the oldest Indian Museums.... is a really unique place. The juxtaposing contrast of this historic monument facing a silhouette of contemporary skyscrapers spires is one to ponder upon. Also the collection is good but not very well kept and too small an exhibit. It can be much well presented.

As on 17th June 2023, the place was temporarily closed for renovation. No official information was available regarding re-opening of the place, however the people around told us that it's going to remain closed for months for now. Some structures are present within the compound in open air, which could be viewed. I would Suggest to postpone your visit until there is an official notice regarding the status of closure for renovation.

First of all the building from outside looks amazing, it's opposite to UB city, and next to visvesvaraya museum.. The ticket rate is also nominal.. Average One can spend 30-45 min. But since its surrounded with many site seeing places like cubbon Park, dog park, visvesvaraya museum, govt aquarium, vidhan soudha, central library all are in walkable distance and many more one can plan and come for day trip. But the canteen next to museum is average.
Also know as Venkatappa Art Gallery, the building dates back more than a hundred years, to the late 19th century It's one of the city's major landmarks and it's location is close to major tourist & shopping centres It houses a well-maintained museum of artifacts both old and fairly recent. The layout and presentation of the exhibits is one of the key features of this gallery Mobile photography is permitted The staff are helpful and polite
A nice place for some infotainment. The ticket is unbelievably cheap, rs. 4 for the museum and the Venkatappa art gallery! The place is well kept and the location is amazing. It can be named as a popular spot both for tourists as well as locals. Try to avoid this place on National holidays as it is too crowded. The museum is clean and well kept and so is the garden. The pond located in the garden is a cherry on top!
Directorate of Archaeology and Museums in Karnataka is the oldest among the departments of Archaeology in Indian states. Though the department was established in January, 1885, by the erstwhile princely Mysore State, by appointing Mr. B Lewis Rice as Director, the archaeological studies had started much earlier.

Very nice you can see many historical statues. Many olden days weapons. Ground floor is very nice compare to other according to me. In first floor also same historical things are there but what you seen in ground floor is far impressive than upper one. In behind of it there is a drawing hall That is also really impressive There we can see vekatappa's drawing that is very nice Please visit once

Awesome place to go. It rakes 5 hours or more to complete from school going kids to Graduates everyone can visit. The entry fees is 75. The Museum also has internal Canteen which includes lunch and snacks. The Museum has 3 -5 internal entertainment centers (extra charges to be paid).Must visit at least once in a lifetime. To much to learn and explore
One of the oldest museums in India which is itself a heritage building right next to Viswesarya Tech Museum. It houses one of the best hero stones and also a dedication to pet by his master from ancient times. It has beautiful paintings also. The oldest specimen of Kannada script .i.e Halmidi Script is kept here. Please do visit this museum
It is a good place of u had interested in history, but no guides to explain anything in the museum. History related books also there but no one is there to buy book. No proper maintenance. One of the Best place to visit in Bengaluru. Entry fees is only 20rs per person. There is park of idols behind the building. It is crowded on Sundays
Quite an old museum which, nevertheless, hold some important pieces from the pre-neolithic period or Auchean age, though they are difficult to date. Also a wide variety of 1st to 8th century sculpture. Limited descriptions - fire up Wikipedia to get details. Curation should be brought into the 21st century.
Entry fee is 20 per head for adult. Exhibits from neolithic age to few articles used during 19th century are there. Old musical instruments , utility vessels, and weapons are also on display. A few statues and stone sculptures from old archaeological sites as well as temples are also displayed here.
Nicely arranged and well preserved museum. Articles from Indian History especially, from ancient history can be observed here. There is also an art gallery within the enclosure which can be accessed through same ticket (I didn’t know that and lost it only to buy another). …

Great place to visit who love to see the ancet creations, much valued place one can spend 2 to 3 hours here, located near to Cubbon park. Good parkin space available. They are charging a little entry peace worth what you are getting inside. Enjoyed a lot. At heart of the city.
Having stayed in Bangalore for 13 years, I really felt ashamed not visiting this place before. Beautiful artefacts, sculptures and paintings. You can also install pinakin app in your mobile for audio guide which provides in depth information about almost all specimens.
One of the oldest building's in Bangalore and it was built during British peeiod. It was built in Roman style. Here you can have glace of Kannada language scripts during 10-15th century. Recommended to the one who like ancient sculpture, literature and architecture.
Must visit when in Bengaluru...a vast collection of historical artifacts to appreciate. See engraved brass plates that were issued as land titles...I wonder how much time it took to finish intricate pillar carvings by skillful artisans centuries ago...amazing!
Located at the center of Bangalore city near Cubbon park. It’s a must visit museum. Very informative. Even the building structure and color is very attractive.

Everything is fine . It's our pride of ur Bengaluru. But in side of cubbonpark people who sells toys or something they are charging extra amount for what they sell

Awesome experience and a feast for history and archeology lovers. The artifacts range from 15 th century hoysala vijayanagara Dravidian style architecture. The photos that I display here have canons, gajasura, and govardhana Krishna. Though …
The facade of this building was just so lovely. Loads of information in those archives. Paintings from different eras of India can be seen here but only go if you are a fan of history and would love to spend some time reading.
One of the oldest museum of South India. Established by erstwhile Mysore state. It has one of the earliest Kannada inscription related artifact. Vast collection of coins, murals, paintings etc.. Must visit place for everyone.

It has 2 floors, with different sections including sculptures and statues on ground floor , paintings esp tanjore style and miniature paintings on 1st floor, musical instruments gallery. No photos allowed inside museum.
Right side hall is very nice. It has big stone statues mostly from 10th to 12th century. 12th century Hosala's stone carving from Halebidu is very intricate. Left side ground floor and 1st floor room are not impressive.
Great collection of oldies.. entrance fee of 4 rupee for adult and 2 rupee fof child (5-10yrs). 10 am to 5 pm. Good staff. Photography prohibited inside. But nice frames for ur cam are there outside n around d museum.
Well maintained by department. Palace not too much big. You can round up with in 30 minutes.tipu sultan had been use this palace at summer time.this palace is built by mainly wood.the entry fee is 25 rs per head.
A nice place to visit though the antiques haven't been maintained too well. The timings are till 5pm and you would need 2 hours atleast to browse around. They also have audio tours though we couldn't take one.
Great place. If you an history lover, that sculptures amaze you. Old manuscripts, Paintings are simply amazing.

This is a great collection but to realy enjoy it you need to have somebody to interpret it for you. The signage is not sufficient. Do not miss the art gallery next door your ticket is for this as well.
A must visit for all. The best place to gain a fantastic insight into our history and culture. The entry ticket is just 20 and one can also see the amazing Venkatappa art gallery with the same ticket.
Well kept museum with audio guide. Good collection pre historic such as stone age items. Many antiques depicting Bangalore history, one gallery dedicated to painting and another for stone sculpture.
Nice place to have a visit, people who have interest in archaeology will have a great time like me.

The building needs a little upkeep. But it was really fascinating to see some pretty old stuff. Who knew they have artefacts from around 3000 BCE! The place is really pretty too.
Not too much to see and learn. The best part is the sculpture room. The museum has just a few rooms with a few antiques to show, most of the times even not properly catalogued.
Lots of collection of ancient Sculptures, things which had been use the ancestors. But the maintenance is underrated because it needs lighting, and the well maintained toilet.
This place does tell a lot about the kingdom of Tipu Sultan, starting from there weapons to the there untesils. If you can't the visit the Mysore Fort, well then visit here.
One of the nice place to visit with family and kids. Good and some rare historical artifacts, sculptures are there at display. Parking facility is available nearby.
It's really informative museum here one will find out the art and craft related articles such as paintings, stone art, equipments used in fightings etc.
One of the famous Museum in Karnataka. Well maintained place and very informative. Must visit place for all. Specially for history lovers and students.
सुंदर और अच्छी तरह से बनाए रखा गया.... यह नव-शास्त्रीय औपनिवेशिक पहनावा.... सबसे पुराने भारतीय संग्रहालयों में से एक.... वास्तव में एक अनोखी जगह है
Amazing collection, not maintained properly, has both car and bike parking for a nominal fee. Government could have used this monument wisely .
Museum has introduced an audio guide. This helps in knowing more about the place and the exhibits. This makes the entire visit more enjoyable
Best place.. everyone should visit with childrens... There is many more things to learn for them as there is some facts of science
Great place to visit ☺️
