I was ready to place an order through Double Monk during their Edward Green trunk show. I enquired about the price of an MTO configuration and was quoted an amount significantly higher than their website indicated. Upon questioning this, Charles (the staff member who replied to my message) completely ghosted me. I likely still would have made the purchase, despite the higher price. His rudeness, however, is something that I wouldn’t tolerate in any retail setting, much less that of a luxury business. I have now instead placed my order through a European stockist at a significantly lower cost and with a more far friendly experience altogether. It would bode well for Double Monk and Charles to reflect on how their actions affect the success of the business. I certainly will not be shopping with them in the future. I assure you, however, that this shock was genuine. The fact that Double Monk overcharges to such a high extent compared to their competitors is in my opinion nothing short of disgusting. It is not my fault that DM's prices are head-and-shoulders above the rest. Indeed, the situation is quite unfortunate. I would much rather have ordered my shoes through an Australian retailer, both to support the economy and help local small business. I never asked for a discount, Charles. I was clarifying what the base price of the shoes were. The price you quoted me was significantly higher than the cost listed on your website. You are quite right, also, that I was seeking free trees - they were an advertised perk of your Trunk Show. So, Charles, I thank you for your well wishes. Rest assured that when I wear my "super-budget" shoes, I will be doing so with a clear sense of satisfaction, knowing that I have not fallen prey to grubby business tactics. I urge all potential buyers to read the critical reviews on this site and see how a business who claims to not like "wading in the mud" does just that. Outstanding customer service lies just beyond Australia's borders. Do not be afraid to go look for it.

Superb selection and staff who understand their products. Walking through the door of Double Monk is a strange experience, all at once you are presented presented with a rich array of objects all of which cry out for focused attention. It’s intense and disorienting. The dimensions of the shop seem to shift and people seem both close and faraway/loud quiet simultaneously. For people interested in shoes and quality men's wear, it’s stunning to see so many objects that have been the focus of fashion blogs in one location. For all it contains, the shop is quite small and this disorientation can lead to a strange feeling of crowdedness and isolation. This may sound like a middling review against the 5/5 score I’ve given, but the shop is in a class of it’s own in Melbourne. Conventional standards of layout and expectation need to be different. The selection easily makes it one of the best men’s shoe shops in the world. Over my various visits to the shop I’ve bought two pairs of shoes, shoe care products and a tie. Whenever I’ve been there I’ve found the staff helpful and informative. During the shop’s quieter moments they’re happy to share their passion for men’s fashion and a whiskey (and when buying shoes even the very good stuff). Good whiskey when buying great shoes makes all the difference and this has made it my favourite shop in Melbourne.

I didn't think I would have a lot to do at a Menswear store, but tagged along with my son and Husband for some wedding shopping anyway. Whilst they have shopped at Double Monk before, this was my first time there and I was taken by the beautiful look and feel of the store. The gorgeous wooden shelving and interiors had a really warm, luxurious feel. The big smiles and politeness of the team, immediately put me at ease. They offered me a cup of tea and took my son and Husband through their purchases. Chris, Ben and Charles are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to footwear, fitting and clothing and they really helped my son and Husband find the perfect shoes and ties for the wedding. I remarked that it was a pity they didn't have anything for me. Imagine my delight, when I walked away in a pair of incredibly beautiful Ladies Loafers. The Crockett & Jones ladies range, is absolutely stunning, and these shoes fit better than any uncomfortable heels or boring old flats that I usually wear to work. The team's understanding of how a shoe should fit a woman's foot is something else! Thank you very much, Chris and team. You really looked after us like family!

A good friend of mine was in the market for a nice pair of double monks as a Christmas gift for her partner, and even though I only know of Double Monk by reputation, I suggested that we check it out anyways. She found a nice pair of Crockett & Jones, I received some really good advice about shoe maintenance and ended up buying some Saphir shoe care products as well. The man in the moustache(sorry I'm bad with names) was super patient with any questions that I had even though I did not purchase my pair of Crockett & Jones from them. Great interior Decor, helpful staff and nice collection of whiskey too. Overall a great experience as both my friend and I left happy customers. 5/5 would visit again.

I don't normally leave reviews but I must share my delightful experience. I recently got a pair of Crockett & Jones shoes from Double Monk. The moment you step in to the store, you immediately notice the amazing atmosphere produced as a result of the carefully designed fitting. Chris & the team were extremely patient & accomodating with the whole journey. From explaining why a quality pair of shoes is worth investing in, helping to select an appropriate style through to getting the sizing perfect – I never felt pushed through the process. The staff genuinely want you to enjoy your shoes as much as they do. I highly recommend a visit to experience this all for yourself.

I went to the store last Saturday to purchase C&J loafers. I paid $150 deposit (which was perfectly fine) as all the shoes I wanted to check were at the Sydney store. However, when I visited the shop, the brown C&J loafers that I had requested were not available. When I asked the salesman, I was informed that it was sold out so they were not able to ship it down to Melbourne. Instead, they had given me one in a different size for me to see. Lucky I was not so keen on the brown loafers but if that was the pair I wanted, then I guess I had to wait for them to get it restocked. Other than this, I was quite happy to visit the store.

This was my first venture into fine mens' footwear and my experience at Double Monk was nothing but a pleasure. Tom who helped with the shoes and boots I was interested in was friendly, courteous, respectful and patient through all my trying out of sizes. I must say that I felt more comfortable shopping here than I have at any other footwear store. The team were helpful and friendly and their shoe selection is fantastic. I can, without reservation, highly recommend Double Monk for those interested in fine shoes.

Quite simply, these guys offer the best shoes in Melbourne. Service is outstanding, staff impeccable, ably led by Chris. Not sure why you'd go anywhere else! And of course, stock more than just shoes. They also introduced me to Japanese whisky several years ago before the prices skyrocketed... a great selection to sip from! Undoubtedly the finest place to buy shoes and other leather goods in Melbourne - with amazing products and old fashioned service.
