This has got to be the best bookstore I have ever been. I had bought the AL-star glossy red Special Edition Fountain Pen and Notebook Gift Set at a very fair price. It may be slightly a bit expensive, but the price is quite reasonable for pens of such a good quality. In fact, it does deserve a higher price, as the quality is way too good. It has got to be the best of Lamy, not only because of their fluorescent transparent yellow grip, and one of the orangish red feeds, but also how smooth it writes. Fitted with my large volume cartridge, it can last me an entire week before my cartridges need to be refilled. And the refill process is also very easy. Simply pull out the blue plug at the back, plug the glass pearl back in, and you can fill the cartridge with a syringe only, rather than requiring a needle to refill. The staff member had shown an enthusiastic and polite manner and attitude. They have shown me respect and care like no other bookstores have before. This is the bestest pen store I had ever been in my entire life. They have the best manners and attitude we can ever ask for. Anyone who shops or buys anything here should be very grateful. I am also looking to apply for a part time job in this store.
Witnessed a terrible exchange between a customer and a manager while in the store with my sister the other week. I had heard the whole encounter and the manager was being terrible to the lady. The customer had purchased a book with that was faulty. The Dymocks terms and conditions states that customers are entitled to a replacement and refund if the books is faulty (customer just wanted a replacement of the book). This all escalated when the manager personally attacked the customer (the customer was actually leaving and remained calm and respectful). I was appalled by the way the young (can't say gentleman) was talking to this customer. I dropped the books I was about to buy and left the store. I will never be buying from dymocks again if this is the level of customer service they strive for. Very disappointing.
Yes, it's a chain. But that doesn't mean it can't be amazing! The CBD location is a great place for books and souvenirs. Yes, get your Aussie items, here! Here are some highlights: 3 floors of books, plus gifts for book-lovers. The lower floor is all kids' books. ✒️ Fancy pens. Not-so-fancy pens. Notebooks. This shop has a specialty stationary section. ♟️At the back is a games section (like, board games). Great selection! ✔️ The staff pick their recommendations for books and write them on cards on the shelves. I've spoken with staff multiple times and they're keen readers. Visiting from overseas? Buy an Australian book as a souvenir, especially in the kids' section. Aussie authors are often highlighted. Vegemite goods, too. ☕ Cafe, upstairs.
First of all it has to get a star for just being one of about 3 big bookstores jn the Sydney CBD. Its got a good stationery department too. That said, so many of the books just just turned into the lowest common denominator. Hundreds of celebrity cookbooks, a huge section of paranormal romance, and computing/technical books largely limited to those from "...for Dummies" range. Maybe people don't read anymore or the focus is on sales when profit margins are thin, but I still think there is an argument for offering a well-rounded book stock reputation to attract people who actually buy books regularly. Kinokuniya is still the number one in Sydney in this respect.
Feeling discriminated by a staff at Dymocks Sydney CBD coffee shop. She asked us to wait to be seated (table for three) and later on gave us a table at the corner (where another staff was having lunch) saying we had to leave at 12:30pm, one hour since we got the table but she did’t say anything like that with other customers who came after us. Don’t really know why she did that. If you don’t have a place to serve your customers with pleasant than don’t let them in, we’re happy to dine in other place rather than feeling given a charity table. Very unhappy with the experience.
Lovely environment, wide selection of books (especially fiction) and helpful staff. The vibe is nice and open, with plenty of seats and even a café upstairs. The reason this store isnt ranked 5 stars is because shopping here will cost you a small fortune, your left hand and your firstborn son. Books are fairly reasonably priced, if not on the expensive side, but everything else is beyond ridiculous. Simple puzzles cost upwards of $40! But overall, the vibe and range is nice enough to make up for it... Sort of...
I guess its "alright" despite being 3 stories high its selection of books is rather limited. The cafe is really overpriced for what it is which is really upsetting. I see they are trying to cater to the more popular side of books i.e booktok with little interest in the other genres. I have just gotten used to not being surprised when i walk in knowing it will be the exact same selection. I would personally go to the Japanese bookstore in The Grounds way better selection and has more of a niche market.
Long live the bookstore. In these times if you’re not a chain bookstore, it makes it very difficult to survive. Yes, Dymocks is a large chain, but you always feel at home there. It’s a great place to find exceptional stationary, a birthday card or your next read. Highly recommended spending some time here and just enjoying the atmosphere of a classic bookstore.
Book stores are closing right... Online content is becoming easier to access... So you'd think the greeter at the front door would be more than happy to help a real live person walking in their front door... Well no, not here! Would have thought they would be more accommodating even if just for saving her own job while this store remains open...
Great bookstore with an excellent selection of Science Fiction and Fantasy books, extensive choice of Australian books and plenty of other gift selections. All in all, well curated and with a very helpful and knowledgeable staff - they've made any number of terrific suggestions on "what to read next" - we come here every time we're in Sydney.
The concept of a café at the mezzanine of a library is amazing : it's an unexpectedly very enjoyable quite place, and the food is simply exquisite. Our best meal in Sydney ! The chicken schnitzel with creamy mushroom sauce served with mashed potato and greens was just perfection. How can they make this miracle in such a small kitchen ?
Great service and price on books some fantastic options for gifts and some excellent learning Toys and games for young and old alike, wonderful selection of books if you like to browse an actual brick and mortar store staff are very helpful and friendly and approachable also appears to be plenty of them working
Being charged 20c for a small paper bag for the card (as if the $7.60 wasnt enough - I'm an old school sucker for cards) I purchased is just a money grab, pure and simple. Remember the time when customers were treated like they meant something. Is it any wonder why stores like this are becoming obsolete.
Happy with the variety of books they have from one author and hardcover collections. The toilet stank, on-the-floor staffs could definitely be more accommodating (when I tried asking question this bloke answered and quickly dashed off) or maybe just a Sydney thing.
Blown away by the diverse range of books, board games and cute merch. Has a good amount of seating scattered throughout the three floors including a nice cafe for you to sit and enjoy a book at. Definitely a spot I'd frequent for more delightful afternoons
Huge, great variety of books ranging from YA to children’s to adults, and pretty much every genre you can think of It was pretty sick the got elevators for 3 FLOORS and theres like interactive stuff like a cardboard cutout of harry potter that was pr cool
I'm a Dymocks fiend! I work close by and it is my favourite relaxing activity after a long busy morning or an annoying meeting at work to take a lunch break and walk around the aisles of books and stationary. This particular store is the
This is the TOP SHOP in Sydney .. I found my Jemima Puddleduck model there on Monday and the people are always so friendly, and a place for a Cuppa and catching up with friends , new and old ..such a historic feature of Sydney!!
Always been a great bookstore. However the new layout with walking into rows of cards instead of books is quite souless. Its a bookstore it should be stuffed with books not cards and tat . Revert to the old layout much better.
Omg, if you are a book lover, then you'll go crazy. Huge book stall in the sydney cbd. Prices looks reasonable. I donno much about available book categories, but I went to buy some books for kids and I found it.
Friendly knowledgeable staff, with prices that compare to Amazon, so you don't have to feel bad by buying online while walking round the store. Kids section is great! Heaps of selection and relaxed atmosphere.
Way more than just a bookshop. This is a real experience. Give yourself an hour or more just to look around. Books? Yes - LOTS of books. But lots of nick knacks, gifts ideas and extras in a pleasing selection.
Wonderful experience. I have been here a lot of times. Great customer service. Very helpful staff. 1st time going there, staff take time explain the menu for me. Very 5 star service. Food was delicious …
Amazing bookshop, big shop with several levels. Friendly staff, normal prices and besides the books: lots of beautiful stuff like gifts, notebooks, stuffed animals et cetera. Also lots of great souvenirs.
It’s three floors of bookworm heaven! They have books and gifts and merchandise. They also have a cafe which was lovely to eat/drink sit in while admiring people watching all the shoppers in Dymocks.
I had an appt in the building and as I was waiting, I Googled a watch/jewellery repair place in the CBD, and to my amazement, there happened to be one in the building a few floors below!
The smell of books bring me back to my college years. A cafe in the middle of the bookstore and in the heart of city that's a plus, reasonable price, enjoyed my salmon bagel.
Good selection of fountain pens. Mostly those at the more affordable prices. Great place to find stationery gifts for your loved ones. Oh, they have books too.
I do enjoy this book shop a lot. I like the retro vibe they manage to keep after renovation. And I like their staff being friendly and helpful …
After waiting 40 minutes for one coffee and two glasses of table water. My glass of water had two lipstick marks in the cup… Absolutely disgusting.
I know most people visit Dymock for books. I visit this place for the cafe on the top floor. The food is surprisingly delicious. Do try the borscht.
love it though I come across some naughty annoying boy teenagers make loud fart noise when I’m choosing books…(finger cross we all won’t meet teens
I needed to buy a gift, and I was under time pressure . Thanks to the knowledgeable staff found what I needed in and out in 10 minutes! Well done!
Great place to stop in and have a look at books. Solitude in a bustling city. Get a coffee in the terrace cafe. Watch the shoppers come and go.
Love the new layout! The staff are absolutely lovely, which is one of the reasons it has become my favourite bookstore to visit in the area.
The click and collect system is great and the front service cashiers are always very friendly and warm. Makes for a welcoming experience
Didn't know they have a little cafe on the mezzanine. Cozy and nice coffee. Variety of foods on the menu. Will definitely visit again.
Great bookshop with a huge variety of everything books. Very friendly, knowledgeable helpful staff who give service with a smile.
First visit for a while. So many changes. It's more exciting to browse now. So colourful. And lunch was delicious, as always.
Cute little spot, food was nice but the narrow balcony path was a squeeze. It made me a bit too nervous to enjoy the crepes.
Love this store and the cafe inside. Great selection of books, great menu and atmosphere in the cafe and great service too.
Central Sydney shop with a great range of products and books. Very helpful staff who were happy to giftwrap the purchases.
this store was massive omg!! i was a bit overwhelmed because of it, but i had the best time and was there for over an hour
Very helpful staff and amazing selection of books. But what is really relaxing is there mezzanine café a bloody gem.
