September 2022 - UPDATE I WAS SO PLEASED WITH MY MOST RECENT VISIT. On my last visit, it was great coming into the store and seeing 2 cashier's working. The long lineups were no longer gathering down the aisle. Everything was flowing smoothly. The customers were happy and the staff were pleasant. Overall, left me feeling positive and in a great mood to continue on with my day. I would like to thank the managers for paying attention to the little details. It's what makes a company stand out from.others. Thank you! *****†***************************** August 2022 ** ATTENTION STAFF MANAGERS** This is a busy store. This store relies heavily on people cashing out their own groceries. {**The cashiers have been pleasant but they are over worked. It would be better if there were 2 active cashier's on Saturdays as the line ups can get long and block aisles from people trying to shop. Most use one aisle to line up into.. however, carts are unable to shop down that aisle. This can tire out the one cashier trying to keep up with the stress of seeing a seemingly never ending line up down an aisle. **} The prices are great. The store is clean. The floor staff is very helpful and friendly. There is a wide variety of foods to choose from. The produce section is amazing. And over all my experience is very positive. ***I will change my review after seeing some changes over the Saturday shift staffing concerns.
Wonderfull. All seasonal fruits and vegetables are in perfect conditions. All workers, young people were very helpful and polite. I find everything l need. Also alcohol for desinfection, that neither Superstore, or Independent, or Metro didn't provide for a month. Every detail of my need were fulfilled. I don't know if it was some special day,, but l field like a queen. Thank you so much, guys. Each of you, who helped me to find fresh corn at once, girls, who call for taxi, while l was packing my staff, nice young men in cash machine, who was very polite and patient. Thank you all of you. I never ever had same experience in my life. It was like my birthday, not a shopping day. God bless you all. ❤️❤️❤️
I agree with you Christian. I was at this outlet today. and they are letting in too many at a time. They don't seem to care about the pandemic, and sometimes not all of the staff wear masks. The customers at this outlet and the one on Merivale are always agressive and rude. When I was at the Hampton outlet today, a customer didn't keep a safe distance from me. The rudeness in this city is so typical!. The staff should have security on duty in the store, because I have dealt too many times with agressive , rude, impatient customers. And some of the staff there and the ones at Merivale are quite rude. I also find both locations quite dirty., and there meat always looks horrible.
Great grocery store with great prices. Has all the essential items. The store packaged meat looked a little aged and is if expired products were repacked after soaked in blood or red dye as some of the steaks were brown and greyish. So that's a concern, but overall the prices for everything are great. Staff were good except the cashier who just didn't seem to have any pride in her job. But for minimum wage I wouldn't be the most enthusiastic about working the cash at such a busy place, but nonetheless should handle products we're buying with more care.
This Food Basics on Kirkwood shows a very poor level of customer service for a long time, which is degrading to Canadian standards of services. I had previously unpleasant experience in this store and wanted to discuss with the manager. I waited 15 minutes for the issue to be resolved. No one came. The cashier said that all the managers around the corner smoke outside. When I left, all three managers were standing around the corner and smoking. One of which Refii did not respond to my request to deal with the issues and remained smoking outside.
The store is the cleanest Food Basics I have visited, everything in the store was easy to find, every different department was so organized the labels were all facing outwards and the shelves were well stocked, this will definitely be my new go to store even if it means driving 15 minutes to get there, well worth the drive! Shout out to the Store Director Brian, very kind courteous and approachable he was on the floor working alongside his staff, the staff seemed very happy at this store!
Surprisingly decent medium-sized budget grocery store in a neighborhood full of premium priced stores. Great deals on produce and other basics. Hmmm, well that would explain the name... Good for quick shopping trips when you don't really feel like walking a few km to get 5 items. Good selection of products, and well-maintained. Cashier lines are the least efficient part of the shopping experience here. Great alternative to boutique stores or megastores.
Ok I want to know other people's opinion. I got my flyer Wednesday. I was really interested in carrots and onions at .88. Sign said 1.98. I had my flyer went to vegetables clerk.told him they are supposed to be .88. He said lots of people had been asking about this but the flyer was wrong, went to customer service, the flyer was wrong. She went to the mgr. Got me them for .88. I said this is your responsibility not mine
Got the bad experience with a associate in self checkout telling me to go to cash for check out because of I had more than 25 items. I told her that was two separate orders and we were putting in same cart. But she allowed another customer in the self checkout even though she had more than 25 items. Kind of racist move that I had to face from the there. I think this store will be our last list from now on.
Very happy with my recent experience at Food Basics. Got my usual groceries but needed water chestnuts for a recipe and was unable to find them. As I went through the cash I told the cashier Rouba this and she went out of her way to have one of the employees go grab it for me. Her service went above and beyond! Covid procedures were in place with social distancing and everyone wearing masks.
I was in this store and another customer deliberately hit my cart then yelled that he was sorry and shoved his face into mine. This is harassment of one customer against another. I called the store and suggested uniform dressed security be present around the store to protect the customers and that customers need to shop freely without fear at this store. I was told that is not their policy.
Pretty good variety of products, especially produce. Staff is friendly and happy to help. Small in comparison to other food basics, but does a decent job of organizing space. Lacks organization at the cash register however, there is limited space for waiting at cashes, and they don't use a line-up system. This leads to very limited respect for social distancing. Overall 4/5
They mostly have the fly items available although there have been a number of times when there have been stockouts. Sometimes I can't find the product I'm looking for in the store either. Selection is just okay. Couldn't find a few products I thought would be fairly common there in the frozen section. Frozen veg is more expensive than No Frills by not quite double.
The positives... they almost always have what I need. They also have a good system in place during covid where customers line up to pay...very structured unlike the Food Basics on Merivale. Also, most of their staff is really friendly. The cons, they need new buggies and the staff that greets patrons as they enter the store need to be nicer and sensitive.
My govto place for most ofbour staples as the price can't be beat on their selection brand PB $3.99,cereal $3.89, cookies $3.29, jam$3.79, potato chips $1.25, and coffee $8.99. Usually cheaper than anywhere else for these things, even at full price. They are all good sized items and so far we enjoy all the selection products and even prefer it for some.
Horrible customer service. An employee couldn’t answer the simple of where coriander was found, and in the end they walked away to help another customer without an answer to my question. On the other hand, they have fresh vegetables and few nice employees that care about their customers. If going to any other store is an option, I would suggest that.
There's rarely a large grocery bill where we haven't been charged the wrong amount for something. I think a conservative estimate is somewhere between 40%-60% of the time. Be aware of your rights under the Scanning Code of Practice. Everyone has always been very nice and cordial, and this will continue to be one of the stops on our shopping route.
Awesome grocer close to my house. Only leaving a review to say Pleas get some shopping baskets! The carts are huge and I always seem to get the broken one. Went in today to get a few things and it was very busy, big carts all around making it hard to shop. I left my cart off to the side and ran back and forth to it, others were doing the same.
4 cashs were open tonite (Tuesday) but at other times (last Fri at 7pm) there were only 2 causing the line to reach the back of the store and halfway along the back of the store. 35minutes in line I suggest taking a look at the number of cashs open as you walk in. Otherwìse the prices are good and they do carry products unavailable elsewhere.
Name says it all... Basics in Food. Don't expect wide variety however there are still many choices. Prices are great & overall you will get better value for your money by shopping here. Don't underestimate the store's own Selection brand, which has a variety of products that are of equivalent or better taste & value than the brand names.
Best and cheapest grocery store in Ottawa. Very comparative price. Even less than the FreshCo and Green Fresh. Evening and weekend times are busy at this store. Better to visit at some other time during the covid time. Otherwise the store is best place for groceries at Eastern part of Ottawa. Close to St-Laurent metro station.
Everyone in the store should be wearing masks to protect customers and themselves. None of the people putting out products, including fresh produce, had masks on! I wear a mask when I go to the grocery store and I’d appreciate it if those who worked there did as well. It would show respect and care for customers.
Love this store. They offer many of the same brands as the larger stores but you can be in and out much more quickly. The neighborhood the store services is reflected in it's inventory. Downside : no deli counter or fresh bakery items, enh so be it. I visit the more expensive stores for those items, as needed.
Great. Lots of fresh options. Good ethnic food options. Produce was fish and plentiful. Prices are still reasonable even though everything is more expensive these days. The strip mall is a little sketchy. I was approached by two panhandlers outside the store. Otherwise the staff is great.
For prices I'd give 5 stars. For hours 1 start. What grocery store closes at 9pm at night (Sundays 7pm!!)? If one gets off work at 9pm and they can't do groceries. I refuse to go to Superstore because of their inflated prices. Prices here are great. Quality: you get what you pay for.
Poor quality produce. Broccoli turns brown within a day or 2. Carrots and apples turned moldy in less than a week. Avoid buying produce here unless you intend to use it right away. They often have good deals but the Superstore will price match and they have better quality produce.
Disappointing. The fruit was either going bad or badly marked up with bruising. Pricing was ridiculous 3 cans mushroom soup for $5.00 on sale¿Bread was a good deal. 2 for $5.00 all grains included. Bananas .79 lb. Will have to rethink where l am going to shop.
This is one of the better food basics I've been too. The food is never stale stoffer always friendly!!!I always find really really good deals there compared to some of the other local grocery stores I would recommend this place more than any other food basics.
Explored the local food basics today. It's conveniently located, and the layout is well organized. Prices seemed reasonable, and I found most of my items without trouble. Checkout was quick, which was a plus. Overall, a straightforward shopping trip.
What a terrific store! While other chains have chosen to price gouge, Food Basics continues to have reasonable prices and really fantastic sales on things I need. Brian and his staff are so helpful and friendly. The other customers are great too.
Poor customer service, to this lady cashier "Linda". It was food basic fault for miss placing prices on their item. And she made it, clear as if I miss read the label. Another given grocery store would of honor the price they have messed up on.
Well stocked with a wide array of groceries that you can think of. The prices are acceptable and staff friendly. The premise is very clean and tidy and the baskets and carts are sanitizer regularly. It's a very nice place with ample parking.
2 cans of cat food for a dollar each how can there be 24 cents tax ? Take notice that A and W has their momma burgers for $2.99 taxes in at $3.14 where's the justification ? No customers care here it's customized separation of your money...
Great place great service too I found what I was looking for & great prices as well. I highly recommend shopping here if you are on low income for food this is most definitely the place to place to shop for sure for groceries.
Literally every time I come here, the lines for the cashiers stretch through the whole store. By the time I reached the cash 20 mins later, my ice cream had melted. They really need to get more cashiers or get self scans.
This place has drastically improved under the new manager lines are a bit shorter. The store manager is always out in the store and willing to help. I can't really judge his predecessor as I have no idea who it was.
I always find what I'm looking for easily. The staff are always friendly, helpful and polite. The only draw back there is that alot of times they do not have enough cashes open for the amount of people shopping.
Good selection, and prices. The store is clean and the staff are helpful. The manager is very friendly and has even special ordered products from Europe upon my request that I can't get anywhere else. Thank you!
Horrible customer service. I had a simple question at self check out...the employee who came over said "just press ok...its really not that hard". Sarcasm is the new way in customer service I guess...very sad.
Always seem to be out of products. From beans to bacon to milk. I only go if I need an item or two. Otherwise I can't complete a shopping list there. Staff is 50/50. Some are nice but some are quite rude.
Good prices when things are on sale. Don't often buy fresh food there, but can assess quality when needed. They have self checkouts and regular cashes open to. Always lots of open, free parking spaces.
Produce is surprisingly good at this location! Good ethnic food section too, especially Caribbean cuisine. Obviously not as much selection as a larger store, but generally I can find everything I need.
I shop here a couple times a week, usually after 8, as that is when I'm swinging by on the way home. Staff is always friendly, pricing is fair (comparatively) and it's a few blocks away from home.
I often cross the border from Quebec to get amazing offers at food basics the only thing is that they don’t price match which makes it annoying to navigate to other stores afterwards across Ottawa
The Food Basics Manager was accommodating, pleasant and patient with someone like me who was a first time shopper at their Kirkwood location. Highly recommend this gentleman and this location.
This is probably the worst store in Ottawa. Constantly not filled shelves with products that are sold at a discount, poor freshness of greens, incompetent staff with poor quality of service.
Aldo who was on the cash was the most polite young man and he gave excellent customer service. Made everyone feel acknowledged. You dont see this kind of service very often nowadays.
Fast service, good location to get in and put of with decent prices. Staff wasn't overly friendly, but they were efficient. There is no self checkout option which I would of liked.
Went after long time. Very nice, fully stocked and clean. Also they have automated announcement every 5-10 minutes reminding customers to wear mask and how to wear. Loved it.
This Food Basics has not been renovated in some time. The cashiers and other staff are friendly. Must get here early during a sale to find popular items at a good price.
My first visit today. The man supervising the self check out was amazing ….so kind, helpful and oh so knowledgeable …… around 2 pm ………BRAVO! Give the man a raise …
Lovely since the renovations -- very easy to shop at now as it's lighter, brighter and feels much cleaner. Prices are pretty consistently good and staff are helpful.
Great prices but the checkout staff rarely smile and don't help with bagging groceries. They'll stand and wait patiently while they watch you bag your own, though.
Good prices. Not too big or too small. Has all the basic foods you need(hence the name). Sometimes they don't have enough cashiers. Most of the staff is friendly.
Great selection of food and produce. Friendly staff. Prices are reasonable . Just before Christmas they have European and German cookies. They go fast.
Selection is limited when compared to Loblaws or superstore but the prices are quite favourable. The isles are clean and the produce is well managed.
Pretty good produce and prices. Lacking in a few areas, but typical of more "budget" grocery stores. Felt a bit crowded for red zone, but not crazy.
A better selection than I have seen at other Food Basic locations. Fair prices and the ability to rain check items is nice. Slow checkouts.
Should tell people to wear masks properly. Do not sanitize their carts on my visit, had to ask. Too small a place to let so many people in.
I got everything needed and workers were friendly, helpful and professional. Yes, I'll be back should I ever travel to that area of Ottawa.
Great selection prices and location. Can be a bit busy so expect long cashier wait times especially at peak times. Overall great place
Great staff and very friendly! Store is very clean and items are always well stocked! Fruits and veggies are well priced and fresh!
Always good prices and good selections. Aisles well laid out and easy to find what one needs. Fresh produce selection is good.
I like the prices but there was some chicken that was rotting on clearance. Good plaza it's in pet store,LCBO,and a few others
Really great place. As international students we get almost everything from here and it's flexible within our budget.
GOOD PRICES. Many locked down. Great selection. The service is above par while being fair. Definitely recommend.
Get rid of all the cashes for self checkout besides 2 then forces everyone to those two cashes... sad is all...
April 2023 Good food selection at reasonable prices. Easy to access from the 417, and easy to get free parking.
Marginally cheaper. Not worth spending the extra gas to go there if you don't live close by already.
Love that place. It is so well stocked. Snd clean. And a lot of room.in aidles..great experience..
Great price.. Great staff. Hard working staff. Thank you so much to all the hard working.
Fridges with eggs and milk are full of black mold. Won't be shopping here ever again.
Big store. Not usually too busy. Some good deals if you look. No points systems tho.
Love this location. Always clean and well stocked. Staff is helpful and friendly.
Very congested, hard to walk-in Aisles. Quality of produce varies everyday.
Busy store. Better setup and cleanliness than I expected. Polite cashiers.
It's one of the better locations and they have express check out.
I like Food Basics prices and a great selection of Asian food.
Francesca was such a kind cashier. The store is well stocked.
Good bang for your buck on a lot of grocery items.
At least let your clients know if it’s closed!!!!
Always fully stocked up and the lines move quick.
Reliable, always have the products I need. Fresh.
Fantastic store, great staff, good prices!
Very friendly cashier and good prices.
I love everything about Food Basic.
Great prices. Clean. Good selection
Great food store for your freshies
Always shop here. Low prices
Produce doesn't last
