When I was younger it was a bit of a known thing that certain grocers were better for their produce and meats than others. I used to primarily buy meats, fruits and vegetables from establishments with on-site butchers etc. I'm not sure if it is Food Basics has rebranded or if this location on Innes is an exception but this establishment has been my go-to for quality these past few years. Their produce is of stellar quality, the proteins are limited but superb and the customer service is outstanding! With all of the obvious cut-backs that "premium" stores (Loblaws and Supercenters) have gone through it can be frustrating to find quality in goods and services these days. This Food Basics is outstanding. *Edit to the 5 stars I gave this place. Food Basics on Innes in Orleans has turned into most of the others, sadly. Their produce has been disgusting, their staff are a bunch of unrecognizable angry people and when something goes on sale they don't limit customers. This means every local struggling restaurant will swoop in and strip the shelves of all sale items without any consequences. It was getting gradually worse. A cashier literally passed out due to being forced to work when I was at her till during covid. We swore we wouldn't return after that but today I went in after a few months absence. Purchased $50 worth of vegetables. The majority are moldy, disgusting or unusable. Skip this place and go to Walmart. I'm not sure what happened but this place turned into a trash heap. From 5 stars to 1. They get 1 star for their ethnic food aisles but I wouldn't trust buying anything from this trench.

I really want to give this store more stars. I really really appreciate this store. But, with a walking/bussing only type customer, it isn't easy to get out to get fresh groceries often enough. Therefore, I need to rely on being able to purchase enough to get me through a long enough period of time. Well most things I don't have a problem with. But bread items. One week ago, I went to food basics, and two of my items purchased were a bag of bagels, and a bag of pitas. Well this morning, as I opened my bagels up to make one for breakfast I discovered mold on them. Even yesterday, I was noticing that they were a bit off. So in the green bin went 25% of my bagels (it was a bag of 4). Then a little while later, I was deciding that for lunch I was going to use my pitas to make pita pizzas. I had a bag of 5 pitas. Three of them had MOLD on them! I have been noticing that these products upon buying them, have recently been in the freezer. As they are usually cold and wet when on the shelves. It's common sense that if bread products are frozen, and then thawed, that the moisture stays trapped in the bag, therefore increasing the chances of growing mold faster. This is most certainly not the first time this has happened to me. It's been several times. Please food basics, please fix this. Please don't make me start having to go to Walmart!! As I said above, I really do appreciate this store.

So many of these reviews are spot-on! The shelves are nearly always empty in specific sections and the employees really don't enforce the limits. I'm writing this as someone who gave up on this store a few weeks ago after the Covid scare and came on here to see if things have improved. Evidently not. I don't want to seem rude but that guy who governs over the entrance of the store is the reason I won't return as well. It was the last straw for me and I'll gladly pay more at superstore just to not have to hear, as the previous poster declared... Amateur comedy. While I was in line he continuously made jokes at the two people in front of me then, when it was my turn wouldn't stop until I acknowledged him. "well... The others laughed" he declared. Talk about an imprisoned audience. I feel bad for those who have to work with him at the front all day. He wasn't particularly rude to me but he was inappropriately flirty with the younger women in lin . So, it pains me to state that a once great store is not only bad now but seem to not to be taking the situation at hand very seriously and the guy who herds the flock into the store is just the icing on the cake I needed to never return. Go anywhere else that keeps their store stocked and enforces limits on items

Get rid of the "comedian" in the front who navigates the waiting crowds. He made an extremely rude comment to me on my way out today completely unprovoked and is lucky my hands were full. There is also a huge issue with keeping the Asian foods sections stocked. This sounds oddly specific but it's an ongoing issue. Restaurants consistently purchase all of the on-sale vegetables as well as the rice noodles, soy sauces etc from these sections. I've clearly witnessed a business owner purchasing a full cart of goods leaving the entire section devoid of anything. It doesn't matter what time of day I go, this is still an issue and now with the addition of the little funny fella in the front I'll no longer be shopping at your establishment

A good grocery store that has your budget in mind. Owned by Metro group, it gives you quality foods at reasonable prices. From fresh meats to vegetables and fruits and dairy and all your other grocery needs. Often they have sales items that are hard to find, ask... If they say they are out of them, ask your help to check the back....yes I have got items more than once that their staff could not keep on the shelf fast enough. A place worth checking out for sure, especially for big families.... I would check it even before Costco for certain items.

I went in today at 7am as they advertise shopping for seniors and immunocompromised people, but had to wait outside until 8am before the manager would let me in because it was "seniors only" and it "makes the seniors uncomfortable". I explained I am immunocompromised (congenital heart disorder and low blood cell count), but he wouldn't allow me in. Why put up signs everywhere that say immunocompromised can shop from 7-8 if it's only seniors anyway?! Even at 8am they didn't have any meat shelved, I ended up going to Walmart after all that.

This store is always clean in appearance and seems to present itself as one that cares about its clients. The produce is usually kept in good condition, although there have been a couple of incidences where some rotten product has been found among the good, but this is not the usual case. The meats are pretty good, especially the vac-packed ribs. These are about the best that can be had if you want to put together a rib-fest for friends and family. All in all, a fairly good store. Well worth the 4 stars given.

  • Scott “Osito” B

I would usually give this a four star rating, but the checkout guy on the express lane was dope, over the top, you could tell he was in a great mood! Made my experience better. Update... went back, today, for the amazing specials on meat, and met Phil and Joanne, who were just the best people I could hope to meet. No matter what the question, or how many questions I asked, they answered and encouraged me to ask more!! Made my day, I walked out with a smile on my face... can't I give more than five stars? lol

  • Vrushab Shah

Super deals but worst customer service. I saw a product on promo for $2.99 and took a picture and showed it to the cashier but but the cashier still made me wait and called the customer service. Once the customer service guy went to look for the product and came back he said ‘I couldn’t find it’. After that I show him the picture and then he said it was not there, it was on the other side of the shelf then why did he mentioned that he couldn’t find it. Just wasted my time!

  • ChristinaLH Photography

Visited mid afternoon and shelves were well stocked. Some great sales were to be had so purchased items that weren't even on my radar. They carry most of what I shop for. The check out though...oh my. Only two live cashier lanes now so we used self check out. Don't know if the machine was acting up but it was constantly requiring assistance of attendant. Very frustrating. On the upside, lots of free parking. Another positive is that carts don't need a coin deposit.

Store it’s nice first time in orleans food basic much better that cyrville location, I found the international section that they carry Philippines product that I don’t see on other location, I’m hoping someday they carry some frozen product from Philippines like tocino, longanisa, ice cream, and etc. so far for Filipino section I only see dry product or cans food. I’m looking forward to shop this location since I live nearby.

  • Michaela Scriver

Popped in to this location while I was in town to try and find my new favourite ramen noodles that were sold out at my local Rainbow Foods. What I didn't expect was to find such a wonderfully large variety of International foods! I left with a basket full of new foods to try, as well as a few familiar European items I haven't been able to find in Canada before! This location has remarkably spacious aisles and is clean and very well lit.

  • Joel Demontigny

I would love to give a zero, but looks like 1 star is as low as I can go. It’s been my go-to for years, but will never go back. Representing manager this morning makes up rules as she goes along, made up ridiculous limit rule for a sale item that had no limit. Tried to limit me to an amount to less then what I buy on a regular basis twice per week. Will never go back. This manager just helped out Walmart once again. Total incompetence.

  • John Turgeon

While they have decent prices, their common practice is to limit quantities. While I try my best to keep our shopping to Canadian retailers, this makes it very difficult. We are a family of 7 and unfortunately must rely on Wal-Mart to bring the best prices and encourage to buy in bulk. Example, while all the other stores have specials for Ritz crackers, Wal-Mart always sell at 3 for $6. We must likely will not return to this store.

  • Stephane Therrien

This Food Basics is one of the cleanest Food Basics I have been in, but they are often out of their specials. They often make very small displays of the great sales. I am assuming it is their loss leaders they do not want to push. Unfortunately for them, when I can't find most specials, I just walk out and they miss on the lucrative buys as well. The staff have always been very polite with me which is a plus.

  • Candace Moreau

Food options and cleanliness should be a 4.5 or more. Their customer service on the other hand.... There was this one older woman who actually showed she cared by telling me that there is a better deal on than what I grabbed. This saved me money and also gave me hope for service at this location. their produce section staff are rude as hell and too busy talking about their own life to help customers.

  • Lina Barakat

The prices of food basics are very cheap but so is the quality of the produce. It's very rare I walk in and find nice produce which is why I use this store for more canned and packaged goods. Also the cheese sales here are wonderful. The other day I went in for cauliflower that were on sale and they looked absolutely horrible so I price matched them at another grocery store.

  • Aurora17

This store has a vast variety of name brand foods, so you're most likely going to get everything you need the first time. The store is always kept clean and the service is always friendly. The prices, as advertised, are low. Some of the lowest you can get around Orleans. 5/5 place for doing your weekly groceries.

  • Ragini

I bought some fruits and when I got home I realized they had charged me $5.99 for a watermelon when I didn't buy a watermelon - I had bought a $3.98 cantaloupe. Be careful! Other than that, good prices if you go early in the day. Good selection of international foods too and tropical plants sometimes !

  • Courtney S (beautyisinevery1ne)

This location is pretty well maintained, cleaned, etc. The only thing that is preventing me from giving it 5 stars is sometimes in the produce there are fruits or vegetables with mold on it. So it does save you a lot of money, but be careful with the produce you get!

  • Tony Gosselin

Love this place. There's always savings on on almost everything. However the parking spots are very small and with careless people, you eventually end up with dents in you doors. As any news shopping places in Ottawa, you have thru a maze to get to the parking.

  • Çhris Law

I got there on a Thursday, Day One for their flyer. Madhouse crowd trying to get to the amazingly cheap strawberries. The stock person trying to refill a shelf needn't have bothered. Everyone was just grabbing off his cart. Anyway good store, well managed!

  • Yvan Dubois

Ok for dry or can goods. Prices are fair. Staff could use a bit more mannerism. Meat products are awful..alright to feed a dog! Beef must come from an old milking cow, chicken from laying chickens and pork don't look like pork. Keep away from any meat.

  • Jimmy

Good selection of produce, fruits and vegetables. Also good varieties of bread products. Meat selection is limited and not as good as some other locations e.g., Metro (who owns Food Basics) and Independent Grocer are much better. Store is

  • Kevin MacKay

I don't usually do the groceries and I found it easy to find most things, for one item I couldn't find the staff weren't far and pointed me in the right direction. They had everything on my list and sale items were clearly marked.

  • Kurt Koenig

How can you be open within minutes after seeing you were closed on the news from an employee having coviad-19? That lives on surfaces, so unless you disinfected the entire store's surface in minutes... Shouldn't you be closed?

  • Smriti Vatsa

Good experience. You get quality food for reasonable prices. The store was very clean, and well organized. The international aisles had a variety of great finds from different countries. The cashier was nice and helpful too.

  • Dennis Mackell

Very bright store, prices are competitive, produce is nice and fresh and plentiful. I like shopping here because staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Cashiers are pleasant and makes return to do my shopping . Good job folks!

  • peter yip

This evening,I intended to buy 7 ctn of BOUQUET which have marked with an label 1.29 . To my surprise, when I checkout, the cashier refused to accept the price and the transaction was canceled. The experience is unpleasant!

  • Ba En

There's an old employee her name is Bev and she's a nasty person I use to like shopping there but after what's happened with that witch Bev I only go there when I have to all other staff members are quite good …

  • Yewen Tan

This is a good place to get the essentials. In addition to good, they also have essentials items for homes. It's clean, the staff is friendly, the carts are individually disinfected, and there's plenty of parking space.

  • Poonam A

We visit regularly to buy whole wheat pita and thai hot green chili big pkt, I love the Indian style kulfi in frozen section , u get coconut, mango etc, we also got vegetable samosas, cut bhindi, stuff aloo paratha etc

  • Sophie Larocque

Good place for cheaper prices on aisle foods like canned goods and stuff. I am not a fan of the produce. It always goes bad so much quicker than other stores. I like that they have Blue Goose option for chicken.

  • jusette felix

It has a really fast service and frandley employees de only thing you need to add is à help button so your employees can help people faster but after that it good place bye and have a good day …

  • Lynnerm

Despite floor signage people are all over the place !!! Hardly any masks, so SD. What is wrong with people ??!! The staff, on the other hand, are great. The public need to smarten up. So frustrating …

  • Young-Soo Roh

Very rude cashiers every time I visit. I think they are trained not to smile and be rude to customers. I do appreciate all the guys who helped me find things even though they were busy stocking shelves.

  • Dustin “LeggedSnek” Leslie

Clean and comfortable environment. It has great deals on pantry items and staple products as well as an extensive selection of international foods. Staff are polite and friendly if treated with respect.

  • K P

This store almost always does not run out of stock. The aisles are well laid out, but this becomes the norm when you shop somewhere frequently. Reasonable prices for good quality fruits and vegetables.

  • Yasmine JJ

Prices a very good at food basic however you must carefully select your fruits and vegetables: they're often not very fresh and selection is limited. I still go there every week for everything else.

  • Joe M

I like to shop there when it opens at 7:00 Saturday morning. There are not that many people and the shelves are still organized. It carries some of the same products as Metro but better prices.

  • Fady Abdul-Nour

Good prices when the shelves are stocked. Come after 5:00 pm and you are lucky if you find anything. This store is good for day shoppers. Save yourself a trip if you can’t make it before 5:00.

  • Denis Levesque

Great cheap prices, but don't expect certain high end brands here. Most items are from companies I have never heard of. But they do offer a varied selection and a discounted price.

  • Stan Cvetanov

Not only this store has some of the best prices but their staff is really friendly compared to other places(Superstore). It's not fancy at all obviously, but it's well organized.

  • rich robitaille

Very basic... No frills ... Good prices good service from the cashiers, you can't go wrong unless your looking for something specific because they are limited on what they sell.

  • Adam G

One of my preferred places to shop. Prices are reasonable and they also offer the carpet cleaner rental. I've rented them a few times and they work well and are clean machines.

  • Frank D

Very clean and well organized store. The staff is fast and knows the store like the back of their hands. I would definitely recommend this Food Basics location to anyone.

  • Deanna Poitras

This is a great place to shop over all. I can't say I am super fond of their fresh meat but over all they have great prices. Their sales are always worth shopping for.

  • Andrea Dezan

I like the prices...BUT.. A Friday afternoon 2 cashes open??? Very crowded at self checkout if everybody has a large order. Lines were crazy!! Staff is very helpful.

  • Lise Lapointe

  • Katrine Deburggraeve

This Food Basics is quiet compared to others. Food is well stocked and nicely organised. Amazing prices ! My Go to Groceries . Only place i can find proscutini

  • Thank You

It’s the best store to buy groceries…get more for less and save money….. better than eating at a restaurant if you want to have more money in your pocket:)

  • Denis F

Not having any cashiers was the worst and having to use self service experience not a fan. The concept needs to be addressed .not going back anytime soon.

  • Cathy Cameron

Excellent experience with actual human help in 3 different areas! Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. A rare experience these days. Way to go …

  • Marc S

Good prices, clean place I highly recommend. Food basic is Metro's sister store. You can get something at 0,99$ and pay twice the amount at Metro.

  • Mohammed Abd

The place to go to for all of our groceries. Nice and clean place, produce is always fresh, great prices as well. Been going there for years

  • Rachel P

clean , organized and prices are cheap. However some of the staff were rude and just not into it. lots of parking and carts are not locked

  • N R

This store is disgusting. Produce is moldy. Cashiers are not properly trained, they are condescending and rascist. Never going back

  • Armin Kastner

I shop there a lot. Good prices and I really like their international foods section which is much better than the competition has.

  • TROOL Social Media

Sale items can be really good. You have to know your pricing to avoid those items that are a bit higher than other grocery stores

  • Dave Welch

The most striking thing that caught my attention as soon as I entered was how clean it was compared to most Food Basics in Ottawa

  • brian b.

It’s basic, but good selection and prices. Clean store but the ailes are way too narrow, so I avoid this store during busy times.

  • Kathryn

Just okay...Usually all sale products are there...If only alot of the staff were a wee bit more friendlier. Very dingy in there.

  • Colin Noden

Owned by Metro but with lower prices on the same items. More international food selection. The staff are fast and friendly.

  • George DaNova

Service and prices are good. Selection is so-so. No bakery, fresh fish, or deli, but that's why it's called Food "Basics".

  • Tanya Froome
