Onlangs dit museum bezocht. Viel erg tegen. Beetje gokken waar we heen moesten.

The building and location of the museum are stunning. Architecturally wise I really enjoyed the museum, the inside court is beautiful with the dome. However the exhibitions are quite small, we visited maybe 4 small rooms that were very nice and interesting but not enough… the cost of the ticket is 17,5 EUR, I would have expect to see more rooms with far more information. It’s a pity and we were disappointed. You can visit the big ship outside which is one of the best part for me, however there was no audio for adults available. We had higher expectations for this museum, I would suggest checking website to see what is currently displayed and asking for directions to find the rooms size the building is huge a with many stair cases but the directions of the visits is not very well explained. Library and shop are very nice. I would recommend to get a discount card that includes this museum and visiting on a sunny day as they have a beautiful outside deck with long chairs to have a nice break after the visit.

Amazing museum about the maritime history of the Netherlands. There is a old VOC ship replica which you can enter and look around. Additionally, this has a cool virtual reality experience. Outside there us also the King's boat which is beautifully decorated. Inside there is a large collection of painting about big events in the maritime history, as well as some painting from the Dutch golden age that have a relation with the Dutch maritime history. On different floors there are also new items, like a big painting of waves in black and white. As well as a section about navigational instruments, atlases/maps, and ship models. There is also a small section about homosexual people on cruise ships. This is a very diverse museum that I recommend visiting, we visited for 5 hours and could not see everything.

Excellent museum with loads to see. There is plenty to read in English too, and an English audiotour for any international visitors who don’t trust their Dutch language skills! We spent a few hours here, and could easily have spent more if we had not been catching a train. The ‘Amsterdam’ ship reconstruction was particularly interesting, but we also enjoyed the other exhibits in the main building. We did book in advance because it made life easy, but you could equally easily buy tickets at the desk. The staff were lovely, and they let us leave our big bags behind the desk, which was really helpful. They also have free lockers for smaller items.

Absolutely loved this museum! The building is beautiful and all the exhibits were so interesting. I’ve learned so much with the objects and the audio guide (which was free and had different language options btw). Everyone working there was also very helpful and friendly. They have a cafeteria with lots of vegetarian options and all the levels were accessible via lift if anyone needs it. The ship replica is AMAZING and definitely worth the visit because you can explore all the levels while seeing the harbor as well. —- I want to also add that I really appreciated how they chose not to hide or sugarcoat the history of colonialism and slavery entangled with ocean navigation. More museums all around the world should do that!

Fabulous place to visit in Amsterdam, quiet & calm away from the madding crowd. The "Amsterdam" ship , a replica of a cargo boat lost just off the English coast at Sussex in s storm is amazing. Very hands on experience for young & old alike. The Royal Barge preserved in all of its glory is spectacular, used for state visits & Royal occasions last used in 1962 for Silver Wedding Anniversary celebrations of the Dutch Royal Family. Lots of tales and some video footage of Whaling Ships are terrifying but informative. Exhibits of figureheads & Tapestries are stunning & spellbinding. A lovely day spent away from the midday sun.

Top!

  • Colleen S

Awesome museum - even if you’re not all that into ships. History of Dutch East India Company was horrendous and this museum recognized and balanced that well. Same with the long noble history of whaling. Navigating by stars was complemented by navigating by satellites. Wonderful activities for kids that were safe and self explanatory - giving adults time to read and appreciate the wonderful displays. Not your typical museum at all. And then the excitement for all ages of exploring the replica tall ship - all four levels open to public. It was educational and interesting for everyone in our group Highly recommend

Interesting museum with some fun interactive elements and I learned quite a bit about Dutch history. And to their credit, they are pretty transparent and upfront about the brutality of the Dutch East India Company, the West India Company, and the Dutch colonial legacy generally. But there are few if any stories or information from the point of view of cultures/peoples harmed by that legacy, so it ends up feeling more like a footnote, reminiscent of the phrase, “One death is a tragedy, a thousand is a statistic.” I would love to see them handle this better.

We enjoyed visiting here, the highlight was definitely boarding the reconstruction of 'the Amsterdam' merchant ship. It's very atmospheric and has an interesting virtual reality suite at the front which offers a short but engaging VR experience of the harbour as it would have been in the 17/18th centuries. The main museum building was interesting but I expected a few more exhibitions/displays given the size of the building. There is a cafe and the toilets downstairs in a brick vaulted cellar are worth a visit just for the architecture!

We stopped here as a planned excursion at the end of our river cruise. This place exceeded my expectations. Climbing in and around the restored ship was interesting and fun! Don't miss "The Tale of the Whale", which while partially designed for kids, had lots of great information for adults. Both my wife and I were glad we bent over and went into the mouth of the whale to see a model of a whale's beating heart. The old film about whaling brought back many memories from reading Moby Dick. Definitely worth seeing if you have the time.

It is a fantastic museum and a fine example of maritime heritage preservation. I suggest this museum on a rainy day as it's mostly indoors and takes several hours. The outdoor ship is great to explore and gives a glimpse of life back then. The indoor exhibits are detailed, well-kept, and informative. I especially like the 'curiosity' section. You can get a free audio guide. The building itself is cool to explore, and there is a nice cafe, locker, and toilets. If I remember entry, it was around 10 euros.

We went here because someone in our group loves ships, navy, and water. By the end we all loved this museum. What a pleasant experience the exceeded our expectations. The ship outside was a little challenging for the elderly person in our group because of the walking up and down the stairs. The rest of the museum was well done for handicap access. Very interesting looking at the maps, sextants, and ship decorations.

Beautiful experience. Very interesting. The ship outside Is very funny in particolar for young people. In the last floor there was a beautiful exposition on the food that i really appreciated. The Museum Is a bit confusing since some room are empty and sometimes Is difficult to understand the correct direction you have to take to enter in the "correct room". Very recommended!

Nice museum with a variety of things to see and do. They have divided these different subjects in an organised and smart way, which makes it easy to walk through the museum. The staff is friendly and approachable. You also have the possibility to eat, have a snack or drink and there are many toilets through the building. Very handy for the grandmothers +1!

A beautiful and interesting museum experience. The exhibits are well balanced between national maritime history and general world maritime history, including the dock which hosts some cool ships. Especially notable is the special nautical atmosphere created in part by the building itself and the well-done design. I recommend allocating 2-4 hours here.

This is the most important museum in Amsterdam in my opinion. It tells you about what shaped the nation: ships, revolution, colonisation, trade. It has a replica of Amsterdam the ship to explore, several floors with paintings from THAT EXACT period (17 century), weapons and figurines, and so on. Audio guide in many languages, and for kids, too.

Overall really nice museum. The boats, the new interactive shows about whales and the interesting history of the royal Netherlands navy were really cool.and interesting. I had about 1 hour and 15 minutes and I visited more than half of the museum reading most of the panels. I would suggest taking 2 hours to visit the whole structure.

Very nice museum. You get historical facts as well as can. Ave fun with the interactive things. The ship is probably not historical accurate but very cool to see how it maybe was and you get a good feeling that it was not that fun as movies want us to believe. Get there early, the museum fills up with people.

A lot of stories and art works for the mature audiences since they require alot of comprehension to appreciate. A special building which has been beautifully converted into a very interesting museum. Note that you need to provide photo ID to board the replica Clipper ship - this kept our family from viewing it as our teenager's ID was not accepted. We didn't encounter this requirement anywhere else.

This possibly turned into one of my favorite visits. So much history but told in an intriguing way and such a huge great collection. I personally loved the room of all the model boats, the ship outside and the tale of the whale, but everything was great. The audio tour was a nice addition as well but didn't seem to always work, got some great souvenirs here.

Among the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam is certainly The National Maritime Museum, near the Nemo Museum. A beautiful ship is anchored in front of the museum. Just like the building itself, which is very beautiful, the ship is also a real work of art. During the time we were in Amsterdam, records for visitors to this museum were falling.

They've ruined it like Greenwich Maritime museum...taken all the good stuff out and yes left basically empty galleries. The recreated sailing ship was good but pretty empty and no history to how they built it. Exhibition on queer culture on merchant ships just seemed like a tick boxing exercise.
