i went to school there 23 years ago granted but my experience was a complete joke. i don't know how they deal with disabled students now but back then if you had a physical disability they put you in mostly slow classes whether you needed them or not. i didn't graduate on time because of this because none of my slow classes qualified as being required for graduation. i almost didn't get into college because of this either. i was just as able to take the difficult classes as any other student and never got the chance to. if i had been smart i never would've gone a 5th year to get my diploma. id of dropped out at the end of my 4th year and gone to Nashville Tech for a year before Transferring to MTSU where i ended up anyway. not all students with disabilities are incapable of learning. i wish the school had realized that back when i was there. I'm still paying for it today almost 25 years later.
I graduated with Hillsboro's first IB class (2006), and I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of education that I received. After Hillsboro, I went to Vanderbilt for undergrad, and I was better prepared than many of my Vandy classmates. I later went to grad school in the United Kingdom, and I was pleased to see how highly the international community values the IB diploma. Hillsboro did not just give me a world-class education - it also exposed me to a huge variety of people and cultures. However, the IB program doesn't start until 11th grade, and I agree with other reviewers that the standard 9th and 10th grade classes (even the Honors classes) weren't challenging enough. Luckily, Hillsboro offers several challenging AP classes that 9th and 10th grade students can take.
Anyone who thinks that HHS has ANY program better than Hume-Fogg must be delusional. I attended both schools, and will tell anyone that Hume-Fogg is far superior. Hillsboro has a handful of excellent teachers, several teachers so awful that they should lose their licenses, and the rest are just average- BUT, this is the exact same case as in every other Metro high school, save for the two academic magnets. Hillsboro just has a better reputation because of its location and the slightly higher percentage of well-to-do students.
Only a handful of schools, especially in Tennessee, offer the same level of academic rigor whilst also providing its students with the experience and opportunities necessary to excel in a professional setting. Its encapsulation of almost every area of knowledge fulfills the wants and needs of all of its students, and I am proud to be one. It truly is a comprehensive school in every right.
We have one daughter who has graduated and another who is getting an exceptional education through Hillsboro's IB Diploma Programme. I would say the IB route is comparable to a MLK or Hume-Fogg Magnet program. (Which we have also had 2 children complete). We are thrilled with Hillsboro and are thankful our children can now ride the buses instead of depending on us to drive them!
Of course I may be bias because I graduated from here a year ago. This school has it's ups and downs, as with any school but at the end of the day I would not have wanted to go to another school. It has some great teachers, challenging classes, and an amazing arts program. Go Burros!!!
