I almost didn't post a review because this place is a hidden neighborhood gem and I don't want yall to overrun it. But this place is too good to keep to myself I got the foul breakfast, ham egg and cheese croissant, mocha, and a pound of coffee. The place is quiet, Sammy is super cool, and it's cute spot. The foul is so delightfully good! Its a mixture of lentis, goat cheese, tomatoes, bell peppers and bread on the side. Everything blends together so beautifully Go there now. Hours are 8-6.

I love the pastries, coffee, new menu (lunch and dinner items), and the feel of the space. The staff is very friendly and truly serve customers. I visit several times a week and often work for hours from the shop, and I've been very pleased with everything (great wifi). This feels like the kind of shop where the owners really care about customers and making it a great experience for them. For what it's worth, I visited when they first opened and didn't love the pastries. But everything I've had since then has been awesome (almond croissant, cinnamon twist, and others).

Paid $4 including tip for a Stash tea bag from a box. Could have bought an entire box of the same tea at a supermarket for about the same price. I wanted the chai latte at first, but after I realized it’s made from a syrup instead of actual tea, I decided to pass on that. I was very underwhelmed by the quality of the options for tea people.

The coffee itself was very tasteful and well made. (Dry cappuccino) The only thing I’d have to deduct a star for is the place itself. It is dirty. Ceiling is falling and cobwebs everywhere. Dirt, dust, and a musty smell emitted about. All this while the young teenage worker sat in the corner on her phone watching videos. Just saying. But, your coffee was prime. I deducted an extra as well due to the prices. I get it, it’s DC, but when does coffee prices hit a wall? This pushes it certainly.

I was really excited to try this place as a coffee enthusiast, however when I walked in, my partner and I were pretty much ignored. Then as I ordered a macchiato, the older woman began to rudely explain what a macchiato was(as if I were unsure) and then suggested I get a latte instead of what I ordered. I also wanted to order the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant and it was unavailable. The coffee was good, however I was fairly disappointed with the experience and will not be back.

I wasn't impressed. The customer service was horrible - the young lady behind the counter seemed disinterested when I asked questions about the menu. It was clear that she would rather have been on her phone. She also began to mop 2 hours before the cafe was to close ...that can be misconstrued as a get out signal to customers. Lastly, the cafe is unnecessarily expensive. It costs nearly $4.00 for a muffin. I definitely won't be back.

Amazing coffee. Second best in the entire city (behind Sidamo). The staff is super friendly and will accommodate you in any way that they can. I love to get just their regular trip coffee and have never had a disappointing cup. The space is pretty basic but provides you with a ton of space and lots of natural light. I will say their pastries are not that great, but I still come here all the time because the coffee game is on point.

Loved the 4 hours that I spent at Hype Cafe today. The Ethiopian espresso drinks were fantastic, and the vegetarian Ethiopian lunch food was delicious. Highly recommend. Oh, and I was able to get hours of work done and online meetings too.

Laid back neighborhood cafe near Eastern Market with sizable menu of coffee, pastries, breakfast and some vegetarian Ethiopian fare at reasonable prices. Ample seating includes couches, bar and tables with a nice view of Pennsylvania Ave. Reliable wifi on top of it all.

So their coffee overall was pretty good. But you might want to double check your food when you get it. My partner and I both got the bacon egg and cheese croissant but hers ended up having mold in it. While I understand that were in a rough spot with the whole covid situation, I don't believe it justifies serving moldy food to your customers.

Big fan of this hidden gem! The foul (pronounced more like (ful) is an absolutely delicious breakfast dish, and they also have bagels and egg sandwiches. Ice coffee is everything you could ask for. Staff is super friendly, and place is always clean. They also have pastries and cakes that look great. Would highly recommend!

We were in town for Labor Day weekend. My husband and I came here for a light bite and just to visit maybe get some work done. The atmosphere was great and the service, awesome! We didn't know that they also serve a limited Ethiopian food menu! Next time we are in town I will come back for food …

Coffee was not even acceptable, even though it was a "Capuchino" service is terrible, prices , over rated ,place needs some cleaning, and the smell is likean old drawer. Bought a Cheesecake and a red Velvet too old and rancid taste, hope don't get sick, considering we just ate a little piece

  • Megan Aldrich

My favorite coffee place in this area. There are several options in this area, but the coffee and pastries are just so much better here. There is always plenty of seating and friendly service. Highly recommend!

Love this place. They have great coffee that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and the people working there are so nice. Don't let the name scare you off, it's a chill place that's great for meeting people or getting work done. Definitely go here instead of Starbucks!

  • Andrew Breza

Hype Cafe is one of my favorite pandemic takeout joints. The food is amazing, the portions are generous, and the prices are low. The restaurant has good social distancing practices.

Peaceful, quiet place to work or chat with a friend. If you’re a coffee connoisseur, don’t expect the best coffee quality – it’s pretty average. Great menu, though, filled with many different breakfast, lunch, and snack items to suit a diversity of tastes.

  • Nicholas Cheng

I love coming to this cafe to work for a chance of scenery. The owners are really friendly, there isn't crazy competition for a seat, the drinks a great and the Ethiopian food is amazing when I need sustenance. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

  • Norman Metzger

New and very pleasant, with good coffee and decent pastries (altho accept staff's offer to warm your choice, since the center may be frozen), Take a seat on one of the seats facing out onto the street and watch a neighborhood in almost continual change.

  • Zeris Meharena

Went to this cafe as a quick stop in the day to get some coffee. It's a small comfortable little cafe. I was very surprised to see they had some Vegetarian Ethiopian dishes too. Very quick stop but I loved the atmosphere and the great service. More

  • Moira Fagan

I've ordered lunch here a few times. The Ethiopian food (all vegetarian) is very good. The spicy lentils and chickpeas have nice heat, and it's served with plenty of injera. Seems like a nice place to grab a coffee and hang out for a while.

  • Toni F

Love it. The pistachio cheesecake is unbelievable - light and fluffy with a great taste. Ethiopian food is good. Coffee and latte were excellent. The staff is friendly, fast, and great. Wonderful addition to the Eastern Market neighborhood.

  • Beyshinah Woods

Stopped by yesterday for a breakfast sandwich but they didn't have any eggs...I never understood restaurants running out of food that they can easily get down the street at Trader Joes or a bigger grocery store just a few more blocks away.

  • Alexis B

Decently fast service and the ladies were nice. I got a bacon egg and cheese croissant which was nice and buttery. The mocha was very chocolatey which I liked. The other sandwich was okay, nothing special about it, it was a salmon one.

  • Aisling McNary-Hickey

It's pretty and atmospheric, and I can't speak to the coffee. But the food is overpriced and terrible. I found a large, pointy piece of plastic baked into my "muffin" by nearly swallowing it. Not coming back here any time soon.

  • Alex Doukas

Great coffee and the food is excellent, too. The foul is particularly good – best I've had in the DC area – and can't wait to go back and try some other items. Just an all around good spot to get a coffee and a bite to eat.

  • Hamzat Sani

Black owned coffee shop with food and pastries that takes their coffee seriously but treat you graciously. They roast their own coffee and are part of a great culture of Ethiopian mom and pop coffee shops in the DMV region.

  • Trent Jones

Cosy café with Ethiopian lunch options. Bought an Americano and a chocolate croissant and thoroughly enjoyed it in a relaxing atmosphere.

Hype Cafe is a low key spot with great coffee. It’s a great place to avoid the hectic nature of Starbucks, read a book, or do a little work. The menu is diverse and offers a few choice Ethiopian selections.

  • Matthew Pearson

Comfortable, quiet, and affordable coffee shop with great authentic Ethiopian espresso drinks, among other items. Highly recommended for a break from the heat, a quiet afternoon, or a coffee with a friend.

  • Genevieve E Rogers

I love Hype Cafe - Independent & locally owned - it is a reprieve. Kind staff with thoughtful recommendations, reliable wifi, never over-crowded. Try the baklava or join a coffee ceremony on the weekend.

  • Natalie Brown

Lovely neighborhood coffee spot. I come here at least once a week to work. Great ambiance including quiet study-esque music playing at a good volume, people chatting softly, and nice coffee and treats.

  • Shanita Mitchell

I love coming here. The coffee is amazing and the service is even better. I can depend on this cafe to consistently make good coffee and food. I really like the smoked salmon bagel and mocha expresso.

  • Jaden Harris

The service was well, its comfy and spacious. Ask for wifi password if you plan on using laptop they will give it to you , Everyone is nice and it smells great.

Some of the best coffee I’ve had in the District. Amazing service, the owner and staff take pride in being hospitable, welcoming and kind. Go above and beyond expectations. their food is great!

  • Mainon Schwartz

It was fine. Decent iced coffee. The pastry was fine. The decor is best described as industrial-chic without the chic, more like an absence of intentional decor than a purposeful aesthetic.

  • Daniel Boutwell

The coffee was fine, the atmosphere was nice, but the chairs and benches we're awfully uncomfortable. I wasn't able to stay long without my back hurting. Very friendly people work there.

  • Bo Deppen

Friendly neighborhood cafe with limited but tasty menu offerings, coffee is very well prepared, service is welcoming, window view seating to enjoy your java and watch the passing by.

  • Khadeeja Muhammad

Very peaceful place to work. Unlike the Starbucks just blocks away where the music is always too loud. The caramel Frape was perfection, but only next to the chocolate fudge cake!

  • Scott Himmelberger

Reasonable little cafe with good coffee. Their menu selection and the food quality could be better. There are other coffee shops in the area is probably come to before coming here

  • Trevor Allred

I'll definitely be back. Ethiopian food and coffee are wonderful things, and it's a gift to have both so close, of such quality, and still in a quiet place. See you soon, Hype.

  • Imran Mahmud

Spacious and comfortable with solid food, good coffee, and great service, Hype Cafe feels like a dying breed of simple and welcoming coffeeshops free of pressure and pretenses.

How dare you sell me and my family vitiated food: Beans, lentils, etc. Thank goodness I didn't buy spoiled meat. Yuck! Avoid this place, unless you want an intestinal ailment

Your website and the menu board list gluten free bread as an option, but alas we went to order and you didn't have it as an option. False advertising much?

  • Toni Clarke

Hype is the best coffee shop on the Hill in my opinion. Great Ethiopian coffee, extremely friendly service, down to earth and unpretentious.

  • Dominic Travis

If you order an iced latte the shop doesn’t make the expresso as normal for a latte, but instead gives you drip coffee with lots of milk.
