I took my car to Japanese auto repair to get an overall inspection. Originally I was told that it would only take a couple of hours to do and when I arrived I was told to pick it up tomorrow. The mechanic stated that I need new brakes when they were still good. I replaced the brakes 6 months ago. Just to be sure I took the calipers off and inspected the pads to discover that the brakes are in nearly brand new condition. The mechanic also stated that I needed new transmission fluid but I had that changed within the last 10,000 miles. I looked at the bolt for the fluid level fill/check and it was covered with a thick layer old grease so I don't even think he took the bolt off to even inspect it. After those three things I feel that they have broken any and all trust with me and I don't believe anything else they said about my car. I am terrified that my car was in their hands as I don't want liars working on my car. What else might they do to my car? I originally went to Japanese Auto Repair because of the great reviews on yelp but my personal experience was otherwise. They took me for $60 inspection fee that I should have disputed as no one likes paying for nothing and being lied to. I am very disappointed with Japanese auto repair and would give 0 stars if possible!! Terrible!

I had called around for a quote on replacing my injectors; I decided to go with this shop. Very surprised how little to offer the shop had on work or what I should look out for or be aware of for my car, even though I thought a b15 Nissan 2.5L would be right up their alley. Double-paid to get my injectors done, as they snuck in an excuse to charge working on the intake manifold, even tho this engine requires you get into the intake if you're going to work on the injectors: SHOULD'VE BEEN UPFRONT ABOUT IT, never brought it up until he already did the work. On top of it all, I had mentioned I wanted him to look at my ignition and wire harnesses going into my coils. Well, apparently $108 worth of labor was put into work on it, "testing" apparently, with nothing relevant or worthwhile to say what the money was for. Got a second-opinion and YES it was a problem. Guess that $108 was for nothing and left me with the same problems you begin with. Bottom line, be upfront about what you're charging people; don't wiggle in costs like most shops TRY to. And if you pay to have work done on something, HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW that you actually DID something. Tripled the initial quote and I'll never be taking another vehicle here. Still dealing with the vehicle issue

I have had several things done here on my older Toyota and newer Honda and will go back (some day). They were sweet guys and knew what they were doing. They also had a bit of an admiration for JPN cars that liked. I did get a bit of up sale and they were not as inexpensive as I thought they would be, but they handled some out of the box interior hardware issues for me that not all shops could. If I had to wish something about this shop I would wish they did something that qualified as value added. I don't know what, but something that spoke to 'we made your car better than you expected'. I will be pulling back from them a bit. I'll be back. But as a 'go to place' - I don't think this can be my spot. They gave me some 'funny' charges that were a bit suspect and didn't seem interested in solving a concern. I was looking for a bit more expertise I guess? So as of right now I can not recommend them.

Uber-skilled brothers John and Francis run a very tight and efficient shop and have been extremely generous over the last couple of years helping me out in a pinch. My '09 Subaru Outback was in pretty bad shape a little over a year ago. I didn't get the service I expected from another highly rated shop not far from here. I gave John a call, as recommended by my daughter who had high praise for Japanese Auto and within 36 hours, I had a new and improved motor and a few other essential fixes. I couldn't be happier with my car's performance. I've never had an issue that John or Francis couldn't figure out in a flash and for extremely fair prices. In my humble opinion, these guys are mechanical wizards and a real class act!

My Sequoia and Wrx are always in good hands here for the past 8 years. Everyone, especially John are always kind and accommodating. They are busy at times but they do the best they can to provide perfect service. They are always upfront, honest and do their best to answer all my questions before repairs are done. I will always choose safety, honesty, quality and peace of mind everytime than a cheap price. A good repair shop is hard to find especially for a girl as as the dealership and most places do not care and upcharge as much as they can. Loyal and happy customer , thank you Japanese Auto Repair.

Excellent customer and repair service. My Honda Accord was leaking oil for about 7 years. John at Japanese Auto Repair was the only auto repair shop willing to take a dive at changing the motor out and restore my car to better than new. Did everything he said he would at a reasonable price - better and cheaper than buying another car. John over delivered got my car done in under 3 days. Pretty amazing considering all the work that went into total engine repair and more. Honest and trustworthy - will definitely recommend. Just wish I had found this outfit way sooner. 10 Stars!

My 03 Honda Civic had overheating issues that I suspected were caused by a leaky head-gasket. John did a great job of explaining the troubleshooting procedure that he would use to decide if a head-gasket replacement was necessary. After confirming a leak in the head gasket, he clearly explained the risks and benefits of performing the somewhat costly repair. After I was comfortable with the information, and gave the go-ahead on the repair, he quickly executed. All told, the problem was fixed for the lowest price that I could find in town. Working with John was a pleasure.

They have done great work taking care of my Toyota Tacoma over the last couple years. Always friendly and have a quick turn around. When I knew my brakes needed work they did a great job explaining the logic, cost breakdown and timeline of the services they recommended. I cross checked their recommendations with my previous mechanic from another city, and was able to confirm that it was a wise course of action. They were easy to communicate with and made quick work of it. Everything's been running perfectly since! Also like the vibes of the shop, it’s cool in there.

I would 100% recommend to come here for work on your vehicle. John was a great communicator, very patient, and completed all the maintancence and repairs on my vehicle at a good price. Despite the vehicle being an import and unfamilar the repairs were straigtforward and other garages had turned me away or provided quotes over double what John did despite providing all the new parts myself. Its a shame im leaving Portland soon as i cant imagine ill be lucky enough to find such a great garage again. thankyou so much for working on my van.

I cannot recommend this shop enough! We have a 22 year old sequoia, and it runs like a top thanks to John and all the techs there. They always get me in right away, and go the extra mile for everything. Like many people in Portland, we had both catalytic converters stolen, a hole in the gas tank and a broken window…all fixed! Today we have a window not going up, and they’re going to see me right away to get it up, and diagnosed so we can at least not worry about the rain. Absolutely the best place for your car!

These guys have wrenched on my Toyota SUV a couple of times now. The most recent round was front and rear brakes complete and a brake fluid change. They use Akebono ceramic pads, a personal favorite of mine. I was pleased to find they'd adjusted the E-brake which should be a part of the procedure but can get forgotten when someone is in a hurry. It's always calm and low pressure when I'm dropping off and discussing the repairs and the next steps. Thanks for great service from someone in the industry!

Excellent Shop!! I usually do alot of things myself, lol or at least attempt to. I was in a pinch. Couldn't get this one bolt removed because of how rusted and torqued it was. Called them up, they were able to get me in the same day, although I couldn't make it that day. But when I was able to bring my car in they got me in and gave me a call a few hours later stating she was ready to be picked up!!! Fair Pricing and Fast service. I love that. And they seem very honest. I will be using them again!!!

I love these guys! I went in for an oil change, knowing I had waited too long since I was distracted by my new baby. And I came out only needing an oil change and some fluids topped off. They said my filters looked good. But I love NOT being told that I need hundreds of dollars of extra stuff, which is what always happened at the dealership and other repair shops too. It makes me happy I have a reliable car, and happy I've found these guys. They're also always pleasant to deal with and talk with!

I came here for my last oil change, and a few months later I had to get towed from the side of the freeway because of the poor work they did. Apparently after the oil change, they replaced my my splash guard incorrectly. Several fasteners were either not replaced at all or fell off due to their error, and the splash guard came loose and started dragging on the ground while I was driving on the freeway. They also charged me a ridiculous amount for the terrible service which caused this.

Fair, honest, and helpful. I have been going to JAR for 7 years. John is very knowledgeable and a great mechanic. He is probably not the cheapest in town but he is very trustworthy. He will use new or used parts at your request. John will tell you everything you need to know including: what is broken but doesn't necessarily need to be fixed. If he's not sure about the source of a problem he'll tell you up front so there are no surprises if the first attempt doesn't fix the problem.

John always remembers me as a regular customer and always has a great attitude and a smile on his face. He has always given me great service at a very fair rate. I never feel like he's trying to take advantage of anyone. I always come back to Japanese auto repair because they put customer care first, never tried to rope me into unnecessary service and clearly has a business built on customer trust. Highly recommend as your regular automotive service provider.

This place had installed an alternator for us last year. Our "check engine" light had been on for quite some time. We went there today with no appointment. They hooked my car up to their analyzer. The light had been triggered, but there was no problem. They also checked the alternator they'd previously installed, no problem there. NO CHARGE for anything. Will return & refer my friends, besides servicing Japanese cars, they also service German made cars.

If you want a running vehicle, don't go to JAPANESE AUTO REPAIR. if you want honesty and integrity, don't got to this place. If you want to be ripped off, go to JAPANESE AUTO REPAIR. Lying, shotty, junkyard unchecked parts, stupid, incompetence and LYING!!! How can you be the worse, lowest and most dishonest in Auto Repair? I don't know but this place is all of those things and more. They present as very nice and knowledgeable. But are anything but.

I brought my Honda Accord in for brake and transmission fluid service, and the staff were quick and efficient. I paid at or below what I was quoted at two other auto shops. I was also having trouble with doing a DIY replacement of my head unit, and the staff took the time to walk me through how to identify the part and find a vendor. I will absolutely use Japanese Auto Repair in the future, and would recommend them for trustworthy, kind service.

Had my work truck in to get the timing redone- they caught a potential radiator issue and dropped a new one in while they had it apart. $690 for the timing job (I supplied the parts- minus one seal), $375 for the radiator (and coolant). Out the door for $1065. They had it back to me in two days. I’m a happy camper, truck purrs again- as opposed to the horrible squeaky whistle of the shot idler pulley.

This shop is honorable, trustworthy and they really are there to help serve the customer as best as possible. I am sad we weren't able to get my truck fixed however, how they operated with integrity really showed that this is an outstanding business. I took my 2008 Toyota Camry in to Japanese repair for an oil change. They alerted me to the deteriorated suspension in my car. I have been happy with previous maintenance they've completed on my car and so was eager to have them take care of my suspension. I'll be seeing them next week for this repair as well as replacing my brakes.

Straightforward, honest, no-drama, responsive, and John definitely knows his stuff (better than dealers know their own product.) Good prices, quick diagnosis and pleasant manner. They turned what was supposed to be a 4 day wait into 4 hours/same day, going out of their way to do so, and saving almost 50% from a dealer's price quote!

John was very easy to work with and made a potentially stressful repair pain free. I contacted several shops regarding the issue with my truck and he was the only one who was familiar with the issue and that gave me piece of mind going into a major repair.
