This is a beautiful reserve for hiking. If you don't want to drive far and want to experience amazing views with a bit of effort, then Kliprivier Nature Reserve is an excellent location. You can do anything from about a short 3-4km walk, to a 15km hike, or maybe even more if you repeat some portions to discover new detours. Sometimes you can even get lucky and see animals, like impala or zebra. Parking at the South entrance can be nightmarish on weekends, and particularly noisy. Parking at the North entrance can also get very busy on weekends, and also particularly noisy. The reserve itself is serene and quiet, with the occasional litter. It gets worse in peak season (summer weekends) Path markings in need of an update and restoration of path markers. Apparent vagrants tend to do their washing upstream in the river, so the réservés stream is often dirty from soap and smells equally bad throughout, lingering for a few days/weeks. I've explored joining the volunteering group, but found it on the expensive side personally.

Nature-wise it’s 5-star, but maintenance-wise it’s 3-star. There are no leaflets or maps available (at least not at the entrance I used) the signs marking the paths could be clearer, and litter is scattered around in a few places. The toilet at the entrance is filthy and out of order. Nature deserves better upkeep than this. Ignore that and set off hiking though, and it’s beautiful. Some steepish, rocky hills to climb or quite river rambles.

A beautiful reserve, did not see any animals but there is plenty birdlife. It was impressed upon us the importance of leaving your number so if anything would happen to your car they would call. There have been car jacking of Toyotas, VW and Ford rangers. Inside the reserve is safe and each route is clearly marked as indicated in the pictures. It's a wonderful excursion especially if you have children. There is no payment required to enter.

Good for the heart, the mind & soul! Clean fresh air! Peace and tranquil!. have hiked here quite a few times. V. Safe.Trails are well marked and very clean. There is no entrance fees. The bathroom are super clean, situated at the enterance, you will also find a small restuarant that sells various drinks, ice cream, healthy foods (try their wraps!), etc. Sometimes can get busy as hiking clubs throughout jhb meet to do hikes!

Explore unmarked routes (carve your own paths) to better explore the nature reserve. Animal spotting can also be done here but you would need to be extremely quiet and camouflage as best as you can - the Springbok are the most sensitive, so they just make a run whenever they hear unfamiliar sounds. You can find zebras, wildebeest, impalas, beavers, and springboks here - well at least that's what I spotted.

The reserve is located at a tranquil place. There's a river that flows through the reserve. It is spacious, open and well maintained: long grass is cut and there's zero litter. It is great hiking on weekends as there are many people hiking or running, which contribute to the safety inside. There are securities at the gate though, and entrance is free which is a bonus :-) The only issue is lack of toilets.

Still one of the best hiking spots. With more than 3 trails to choose from, having an adventure in nature is surely what you'll get. Total fun for groups, couples, family and even going solo dolo. Great views and so much plant life to explore. A true gem in the heart of Southern Johannesburg

This is a wonderful place for family and friends bonding. Hiking was never my thing but I enjoy it a lot because I get to spend time with my family. This place can be a bit puzzling for first timers. As long as y'all get together and work together everything becomes much easier

The views are amazing, it a very chilled place even for a picnic...Loved it. Though they can improve their trails especially in places where the ways diverge there should be a trail so we won't have to wonder as to which way to go, it confusing for a first time hiker. …

  • Linda Magare

Great hiking spot, feels like a hidden gem less than 30 mins away from the city centre. Many trail options to cater for different folks and intensity levels. I've even seen families hiking with toddlers. Spotted some animals a few times. Entrance is Free.

Clean, secured and is refreshing. This place is great if you are looking to just let go of daily troubles and center your thoughts.the course is challenging and rocky at first but it's all worth it when you get close to the wildlife inside the reserve.

  • Shane Van Den Broeck

Beautiful well taken care of park with different routes.. Unfortunately I only saw dassies there and one rabbit.. Thought there would be more wildlife to see as u can see animal tracks and feces.. Alot of old buildings there to see of 100 years ago.

It's a pleasant hike for the whole family. It's got quite a bit of warning signs to make sure people are aware of dangers on the trail and routes variety for beginners and more experienced hikers. I'd recommend it to even my lazy friends
