I’m a fan of classic British comedies. So my interest was understandably piqued when I felt I’d been plunged into the surreally chaotic silliness of one of the most treasured British sitcoms of all time, ‘Fawlty Towers’. Or at least the Indian version. The absurdity almost couldn’t have been more artfully scripted, and began as soon as I stepped into Mauj’s restaurant. “Hello! I have a reservation under the name of Heath at 6.45, for three.” “Do you?” the receiving waiter replied, screwing her nose up in confusion and not even feigning a glance at her reservation book. “Well I hope so, I have an online confirmation,” I mused. “For how many? For who?” she asked, despite me having already offered up this information. “The booking’s for Heath. For three people. At 6.45. For this Saturday night,” I responded, bemused. “Oh!” she paused and pondered some. “Is it for dinner?” Having so many tempting lines at my disposal, I settled on a very responsible, “Yes, it’s for dinner.” Little did I know these baffling exchanges would be the foundational norm for every interaction with staff, and would persist until our group left F̶a̶w̶l̶t̶y̶ T̶o̶w̶e̶r̶s̶ Mauj, bewildered but amused at what we’d just experienced. For the next hour and 45 minutes (no exaggeration, we timed it) we were addressed by the same greeting waiter only twice, despite incessant but polite waves and smiles to request service and order our drinks and meals. Those two fleeting appearances would begin with the brief utterance of, “one minute please,” and result in the waiter scurrying off, not to be seen at our table for another 30-40 minutes. During the periods of absent service, our group’s conversations were mostly futile, as the two 1st birthday events on at the time (yes, you read right) and their voluminous music drowned out any hope for conversation - and any hope for Mauj receiving anything more than a two star review. Children spilling out from their event areas and running around our table/ bumping into us/ crawling under our tables to retrieve their balloons, seemed a particularly new low. That is until the violent eruptive sound of popping balloons began and persisted for the rest of the night - giving us all some small appreciation for what living in a war zone might sound like. A glimmer of light in the darkness of the Mauj experience arrived in the form of a quick cook and delivery time: the wide array of dishes arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. The food was modestly but cheerfully presented. The Paneer Pakora and Onion Bhaji were crisply fried and deliciously cooked. The Samosa Chaat was golden brown and swimming in a healthy amount of chole (chickpea curry), yogurt and chutney - but its flavours were a tad overpowered by its own liberally applied chili heat. The chicken saag main meal with basmati rice was absolutely moorish and a perfectly balanced dish of spinach, spices and mustard oil. The drinks list seemed relatively narrow but diverse, not that we got to try any. Although settling on a Pinot Noir ordered with our meal, we were informed halfway through our meal that they were out of stock. We opted to go without. Scrolling through the Google reviews for Mauj (4.5 stars at the time of this review) I can’t help but reflect on the chasm of difference between my experience and other people’s. Has Mauj recently picked up function hosting and my poor experience was the result of poor staffing or initial teething problems? If so, I’d suggest soundproofing upstairs, more staff, or not accepting diners during functions. It’s clear Mauj can’t handle both. Regardless, this review represents what I - and other diners - experienced. Sadly, there were no apologies for the poor service or offers of compensation, however small, for what occurred. In summary, if you’re in for an absurdist experience that is unapologetically bad that feels almost scripted - but is still adequately priced with decent entree and main meal fare, Mauj has what you need - just don’t expect it to be served up to you any time quickly.

Words cannot express my experience and frustration with the service provided by the restaurant. I do not understand the need for them to take other events or parties when they cannot even manage one. No staff no service, it was as if we were the kitchen staff or waiters there who were running up and down crazy getting food organised, making sure that drinks were being served. I made the wrong decision of going with them to celebrate my sons first birthday, worst experience and unhappy photos. Staff have a lot of attitude and don’t respect their customer but rather start threatening. They only have one answer for the experience provided which is “sorry”. They cannot take responsibility to cater for parties and should stop venue hiring. I thought this only happened to me but I had to experience this all again at a friends birthday party. There was only one person attending and no one was picking up the dishes after the first serve. No glasses but start providing plastic or paper cups. Food is served 1 hour late. Sometimes they forget to serve some of the food and we have to remind them that you have forgotten this. It is as if there is the one toilet only and they keep pushing the uninvited or downstairs guests to upstairs toilet. They only have one staff to a party which is on and off. They give a hard time. Overall bad experience and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We discovered this lovely restaurant today for the first time but it has already become a favourite. The meal was superb…each dish a good size, tasty and very filling. We shared two entrees and a main with garlic naan and couldn’t finish it all. Staff were super helpful and pleasant without being intrusive. The meal was cooked beautifully including the tandoori platter which was tender and not at all dry. The meal was certainly not overpriced with a wine, mango lassi included in the overall price of $86. Next time will perhaps be an entree and try a dessert…..couldn’t fit that in tonight.

My partner and I went to Mauj on a whim because it was a cant be bothered cooking night. The service was excellent, our server was very attentive. Serving sizes were adequate, we left full and still had some to take home. The photos were of the food we ended up taking home because we just couldn't fit it in. The quality of food was very good, everything tasted great, and was fresh and hot. In fact it was probably the best Indian restaurant we've eaten in Melton. Everything is priced reasonably. Everything came out pretty quickly.the restaurant was clean and had a lovely atmosphere. It was quiet when we went, however if everyone else's experience was as good as ours I imagine it will be quite busy.

This was our second visit to Mauj and this time with friends n family. (8 ppl) The restaurant has great space indoors and parking is also available on the streets which is less crowded esp on weekends. On the food - it was all great. All the entrees and butter chicken from mains stood out and not to forget the mango lassi. We ordered that much we couldn't try our hands on the dessert. Quantity was spot on and few dishes had that "extra spice" which made the taste feel closer to home. :-) Shout out to the lady who served us and ensured we had everything required esp for the kids. (Thanks for giving the kids some balloons to play with) Lovely gesture. Thanks once again.

Had a lovely meal here on a Saturday night, initially there was a children’s party going on upstairs where the music was turned up way too high and the bass way too low that the music sounded distorted, and the kids kept flicking through the songs which was slightly annoying, however once that party had ended and the volume turned down to a reasonable level the South-Asian music selection was great, I’ll definitely go back but will ring ahead first to check if a party is on lol! We had a Biryani, a chicken curry dish, a fish curry dish along with some Naan Bread and some Mango Lassi, and I have to say the food and the service was excellent, all for a reasonable price too, the staff were attentive and made us feel welcome, and as a local I will definitely be returning for another excellent meal.

Mauj Indian restaurant. Our dear Jagvir Gill has opened up an Indian restaurant in a suburb with a lot of Indian community but calls them stingy “Lichad”. He failed to hire staff who has any manners or etiquettes on how to talk to guests or females. The restaurant runs by serving its customers and there is no way that you can be rude to them. His deary Chef misbehaved and was rude with me -11.30pm when my whole family walked outside and he started yelling at me. Come on man have the guts to talk to a male rather than being rude to females. Beware guys if you book a party at Mauj Indian restaurant you will have to serve your own guests as Mauj restaurant runs at a budget and only has 1 staff on shift but they will charge you full price per head even if they run out of an item.

My first time trying Mauj last night, I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, with Cheese, Garlic and Butter naans. The cheese naan was a little burned and not the best, the other two naans were cooked fine and tasted good but they were plain and not coated as I ordered. Curries were a little disappointing. The thing that stood out to me mostly was the chicken. I'm generally pretty picky with chicken in curry and the cut wasn't really to my preference to be honest. The Tikka Masala was a little bit sweet (possibly just my taste buds) compared to other places and it wasn't really to my preference. The butter chicken was pretty standard, not too many complaints there. Maybe just an off day Mauj, may give it another shot in the future.

Went to Mauj after a freinds recommendation and it surely didn’t disappoint. The restaurant has massive dining space on ground and first floor with options to cater for upto 100 people. We ordered chicken tikka masala, daal makhani, punjabi chicken masala and it was one of the most memorable dining experiences in recent times. The dishes seemed freshly prepared and balance with right spices giving them authentic taste from back home. I dont have any hesitation in recommending Mauj to anyone who would want to experience authentic indian food in Melton south. Will be back for more take away soon. Keep up the good work

My family and I enjoyed dining at Mauj. We tasted the lamb vindaloo, chicken korma and butter chicken with chicken biryani and few nan breads. Had left overs to bring home as we couldn’t finish it. A suggestion to perhaps add 1 more person to the waiting staff. Some people were left waiting to be served and had to ring the bell for attention. Overall, a positive experience. Restaurant ambience was great. I felt I was Indian Royalty. I had for Entrée, Onion Bhaji accompanied with a tamarind sweet/ spicy and mint/greenchillie/coriander sauce that went down very well(delicious, crispy, umami and light to consume). Great to have a restaurant with beautiful decorum and great tasting food need to update on quantity according to price of platter. Need a better price of soft drinks and beer on the drinks menu. Will be back for great tasting food.
