Black Girl Taco Chronicles sent Just A Girl From The 206 on a special assignment to Mi Madre's in Austin, Texas. We had #3 TACO (Ground beef, Mexican rice & cheese), #15 TACO (Pork carnitas, avocado & cilantro), #18 TACO (Barbacoa & pico de Gallo), #7 TACO (Carne guisada & cheese) and Mi Madres Migas(Corn tortilla chips scrambled with eggs and pico de Gallo, then topped with melted cheese aside from home fries and refried beans). It was a beautiful day in Austin, Texas, when we decided to embark on a special assignment to Mi Madre's. As soon as we walked in, the smell of delicious Mexican cuisine filled the air, and we knew we were in for a treat. We started off with a round of tacos, including the #3 taco with ground beef, Mexican rice, and cheese, the #15 taco with pork carnitas, avocado, and cilantro, the #18 taco with barbacoa and pico de gallo, and the #7 taco with carne guisada and cheese. All of the tacos were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. But the standout dish of the day was definitely the Mi Madres Migas - a plate of corn tortilla chips scrambled with eggs and pico de gallo, topped with melted cheese, and served alongside home fries and refried beans. It was a unique and flavorful dish we couldn't get enough of. The service at Mi Madre's was top-notch. Our server was knowledgeable, and friendly, and went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. She even shared some tips on how to make the perfect carnitas with us. As it turns out, she used to own a very successful restaurant in Lockhart, Texas, so we were lucky to get some insider knowledge from a true pro. Overall, we were highly impressed with Mi Madre's and would give it a 9 out of 10. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the conversation with our server was priceless. If you're ever in Austin, we highly recommend stopping by Mi Madre's for some great tacos and a truly memorable dining experience.

Great place! Wanted to get a bite to eat with my significant and our pup so we wanted a dog friendly place. We missed breakfast so wanted to eat breakfast tacos and 4 pm. Unfortunately they stop serving breakfast at 3. Found the place through a review on Thrillist under a article called top 10 breakfast tacos by Austin musicians. Not a lot of ppl at that time on a Wednesday. Our waitress was very nice and even filled up a dog bowl of water just for Rose and immediately said she’s bringing 2 waters and chips and salsa. We hit at happy hour so the margaritas and beer are $5 if I’m not mistaken. We went ahead and chose the Saltillo dip which we absolutely loved. We ate it all and it was a good portion to be originally priced at $9. We ordered small bc of the dip ( got us pretty full fast) steak tacos were good and so was the carne guisada. Maybe a dollar or 2 more than a usual taco but hey it’s Austin. Lemonade was really great and the water was not funky tasting or looking. Forgot our waitresss name but short short hair but she provided great service. Overall great experience y’all deserve 5 stars which I really shouldn’t bc of pricing but I won’t knock y’all on that since I paid 6 dollars for one scoop of sherbet and a strawberry. Yes let that sink in... anyways parking is great on a Wednesday at 4pm. Idk about any other regular morning but seems like little spots I could be wrong bc I saw what I think was parking in the back. Location was so so but not enough to consider this a 4 star experience. Kind of in a neighborhood almost. Surrounded by a lot of super nice and some run down homes but it did feel authentic and they were playing Mexican music. Designated eat with your dog area that’s closed in and has fans. Plenty of bowls with water to pass around. Definitely dog friendly and will come again great experience will recommend.

This place has been in business since the 90's and is an Austin Icon for sure. Small, very limited parking...and we seen that in previous reviews, so we plan in out and go after the Lunch rush...that always seams to work out. Everyone is very friendly...Warm chips and Salsa hit the table. I would definitely label this as "Creeper" salsa. The heat sneaks up on you and is extremely addictive. The Queso was good and the price is fair, as it is quit large. And as with most places, we seam to always add a couple scoops of Salsa, especially when its this good, to kick up the spice in the Queso. New place we always start with our basics...Chiladas...Wife with Ground Beef, Red Sauce...I with the Chicken, and Green Sauce. Now there was a small mix up with the wifes...They brought out Cheese, instead of Beef...With that came an apology and a new plate..Not a big deal, as they were fast to react. Both the Red and Green Sauce were unique on there own. Something totally different from what we have had in the past (100+ TexMex/Mex)...which is truly exciting. Her Read sauce was deep in smoky goodness, and as with the Salsa, had a bit of the creepy spice to it. Really Good!!...And the Green was just as good, with a Tart Tomatillo Flavor, and a lot thicker then most I have tried. The chicken inside was moist and tender. Rice was good...fresh and light...Charros were the bomb...I thicker style, almost BBQ style, with meat and a great Mexican flavor. I wish my plate would have been a bit warmer, but none the less it was a good visit. I would list this as a bit more $$$ then some places we have visited, but there bold flavor stand alone on there own

I came here for breakfast 2 different days. This place is great. The food portions are huge!!! I highly recommend the coffee. I was able to try both the cafe de hoya and the cafechata. The cafe De hoya is hot and has cinnamon and spices. It’s so flavorful and you don’t have to add any sugar. The cups they serve it in are super cute. The cafechata is iced and it’s a lot! This is a mix of cold brew with horchata (rice milk and cinnamon). I ordered the migas plate I was not able to finish the food. It’s a lot the only thing I found lacking was the potatoes. They needed some salt. They have several bean options for vegetarians. They also offer 2 different salsas. A red mild and a green spicy. I prefer the green one. I also ordered some tacos. Potato and egg, migas taco and the avocado lettuce and bean. I was not able to finish all 3 tacos 2 were enough for me so I just took home the migas taco. The potato taco was good no complaint. My fav was the avocado taco. I liked the combination of everything and the flavor of the black beans.

We’ve been going here for years, usually Sunday mornings. The tacos are normal and tasty, the service usually good. It’s an interesting place, it’s grown a lot over the years in an Austin sort of way. The chips are outstanding, but luckily they started charging for chips and salsa so we don’t get them anymore. The only thing we’ve had here that isn’t good is the guacamole, it’s surprisingly plain - usually not salty and doesn’t have pico in it. The only downside is they’ve raised prices a lot over the years, it’s almost twice as expensive as it used to be for the same food. Not expensive, especially compared to the fancy restaurants, but not like the old days.

Stephanie was our server and she was amazing. Super attentive and gave great suggestions. The restaurant overall was a great experience. The food I would say was very tasteful and the price of everything was super cheap. I got the enchiladas and it was just wow. Also got the cafechata, which is an iced coffee with horchata in it. Not too strong and not too sweet which is perfect to me. We also got the Cantarito, which is the enormous passion fruit margarita for two. You can taste the passion fruit and it didn’t seem strong but was I feeling it before we even hit half way. Definitely give a 5 out of 5 and will be coming here again!

The Austin Chronicle once dubbed this amazing place the best breakfast taco in Austin. That is why I came here but not the reason I'll be coming back. Anytime I see an owner (the great Aurelio) greeting his "regulars" it warms my heart and takes any place to an 11. The house chips and salsa were on-point, generous and delicious. I nearly put myself in a coma by consuming the queso with these chips before my tacos even made it out. The tacos, oh the tacos... How can Aurelio be so generous with the meat and stay in business? Not only was the food authentic and amazing it was also a great value. When you combine great atmosphere and great food with incredible prices and hospitality you've got yourself a home run. Thank you Aurelio, I will return with the hope to be greeted with a hug.

Awesome local establishment nestled in a unassuming Austin neighborhood. Indoor and outdoor seating with a dog friendly patio. We were greeted immediately and found ourselves a table. Ordered the fresh lemonade and a carne guisada breakfast taco. The hubs ordered a fajita taco and one other that I can’t recall. Excellent! The salsa was nice and spicy, just the way we like it. The tacos were stuffed with fillings. No skimping here! Waitress was attentive and gave us great service. Definitely a place to eat at for breakfast, especially if you’re into supporting local eateries rather than chains.

I visited Mi Madre's last week due to a serious enchilada craving. Since the beef were the same price as the cheese I went with the beef enchiladas to go. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly enough. The vibe was casual and upbeat. The enchiladas were flavorful and the rice and beans were average. This was my first visit and I was very surprised by the high price of the 2 enchiladas with rice and beans. I will possibly go back to check out the breakfast tacos. If I were in a pinch and not willing to travel 15 minutes north of this area then I would get these enchiladas again. Definitely not a good value but I like that they were seasoned well.

  • YOUNG A.G

Okay I’m start of saying this place seemed okay but for a plate of enchiladas is $18 is overpriced they didn’t even use Mexican cheese. Another problem my family didn’t appreciate is they charged $10 for some chips and salsa most Mexican restaurants we’ve been to never do that and there’s only 10 options of food to choose from. For 3 adults the tab came out to $86 dollars just for food no alcoholic drinks or anything seems outrageously overpriced. And the quesadillas came with rice no refried beans that was an extra charge.

Food was… filling. Salsa tasted like tomatoes and had a zest, nothing crazy or up to par with what you would find in a taco truck. Overall the place is emblematic of Mexican charm but frankly the food tasted as though it was reheated before serving. I ordered the chilaquiles. Beans were bland and tasteless, migas were soggy and covered with a layer of plastic cheese, and the potatoes were soggy. If it were not for the coconut milk horchata I would not have braved this slap on my Mexican face of a meal. 2/10

Excellent! Food and drinks were delicious and service was quick and attentive. Good frozen margaritas. We got a breakfast taco, a carnitas taco, chicken burrito, and beef taco and all were really good. Also the chips are insane. Everyone enjoyed their meal including my mom who is gluten free. Marshall took good care of us.

Mi madres is the place to be! I love everything about it. The owners are frequently on-site, shaking hands and ensuring everything is great, especially on the weekends. The servers are some of the best in town-efficient but friendly and helpful. The food is also consistently good and they have a range of options to meet everyone's needs. I love their coffee and alcoholic beverages too. Come for quick take out tacos on the way to work or stay for brunch or happy hour! You'll have a great experience either way. My family celebrates our birthdays and other special occasions here because it's cozy, yet fun!

  • Isaac Mendez

Pretty damn good. It's a little expensive for a Mexican restaurant, but the food is delicious. The patio outside is gorgeous, AND dog friendly. I don't want to sound pretentious, but being from Houston I find it very hard to find decent Mexican food in Austin without having to drive across town. This place definitely satisfies my cravings. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by it's salsa, and this place has spicy, flavorful salsa that isn't just pico. The margaritas are STRONG, and don't taste like like a generic mix they bought from a store. I definitely will be coming back.

  • Peyman Jo

Green sauce? Yes, please!! Had such a great experience here. They have indoor, patio and outdoor seating available (with a dog patio, of course) We came here for the breakfast tacos, which they have a great selection of and we were pleased with our selections. Had us a nice cup of Joe, too. You do have to pay for the chips and salsa, but we were okay with that. The chips come with a red sauce but be sure to ask for the green sauce! Gotta have green sauce with breakfast tacos or you’re just plain crazy. Overall great vibes and great food, give it a try.

  • Jody Newell

Outstanding experience here. The migas were on point. The breakfast tacos - amazing. Chatted with the owner. Lovely lady! Highly recommend this business. Edit: We just came back for a second visit and are even more impressed! This business has been in place for over thirty years. The only way that happens it's if you are very good and consistently so. The owners stopped and chatted again and I have never felt so welcomed into a place. It's like eating great food with friends. If you are in Austin, you MUST check this place out. Highest recommendation!

I am rating this restaurant based on the taste of the food. The service by the staff was okay, restaurant was nice and clean, and we got seated fairly quickly. However, the taste of the food was just poor and over priced. Notice how I am saying taste and not quality. The quality and quantity was fine. I ate an enchilada plate with an over medium egg served with a side of beans and rice. I was honestly disappointed and dissatisfied with the entire plate. I was looking for something close to authenticate Mexican food but this is more of Tex-Mex.

  • Gabriella Stanley

Service was great and fast. Caroline did her best with what she can give. Food needs more salt, and the beans were undercooked along with the rice. Manager Jose did his best also but the food just wasn’t prepped or prepared well. Also kept my original price and got something cheaper and they didn’t compensate for that. Update: manager Jose just came out and got upset with me for not liking food that I paid for. Update: manager Jose said he would take 50% off but he charged me full price

This local restaurant was really good! I got the Migas plate with chorizo and no pico with flour tortillas. It was overall pretty good, I do think the tortillas were eh for me but its personal preference. Their agua de jamaica was my favorite! It wasn’t too sweet but also not bitter, very close to how my ama makes it! My partner got the beef enchiladas and he loved them, no complaints there. We’re here in austin traveling and we’re so glad we chose Mi Madre’s! You won’t regret it!

This place is definitely off the path and unexpectedly good. I had barbacoa taco which had enough meat to make 2 tacos which i did after ordering an extra tortilla. I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. The queso had absolutely no texture to it. It was extremely watery and would not even come close to staying on a chip. You could’ve poured it through a fine strainer and no cheese would’ve been caught in the strainer. I did like the old-school atmosphere of the restaurant and the wait staff was very nice. I doubt I will try it again.

My boyfriend and I stopped by this little place for breakfast during our visit. Their micheladas are truly one of a kind and the reason I want to plan another visit. So far I have not found a place here in my hometown of Dallas that makes their micheladas as good as the ones they serve here. The food was also very good with generous portions. A good and reasonably priced joint. I had a Vero's Dos XX michelada and I fell in love.

Very good wholesome food. Their portions are fantastic! Wraps, quesadillas, rice plates, their salad was filling too . Pets are welcome, as the restaurant has a homely ‘backyard’ kinda outdoor porch. We are our meal outside, amidst their herb garden, succulents, fresh flowers & plants. I was focused on capturing the prettiness around us, so will have to go back to get food pics

Authentic, inviting, and the food was delicious. I had a michelada and the crispy fish tacos and loved every sip and bite. The service was also great. Went for a business lunch. First good sign-there were four local police dining here! We new right away it was a good choice. We had cheese enchiladas as and fajitas. The enchilada sauce was legit, dark and rich flavor, definitely home made. The fajita plate was huge, and should be shared with a friend. I will come back after work to try out those margaritas

I was very excited to come here and left satisfied as well however the food was just okay but the price was right so I'm not mad. The main reason I'm only giving this 3 stars is because of the super funky taste of my hibiscus tea! It didn't mention anything with that type of tang on the menu but there was definitely something in there.

1st time for breakfast. Plenty of indoor seating. The chips and salsa are great (yes, it's a big deal). I had a pulled pork taco and just one was filling. My friend had the eggs with fajita and queso. It was great also and the refried beans, which are often tasteless at some places, are seasoned to add a great flavor.

This place is great for a leisurely or fairly quick breakfast on Saturday or Sunday. There might be a wait, so be prepared. The tacos are very full and delicious. The chips and salsa are my favorite part, though. They are fluffy and crisp and just the right amount of salt. They also have this funny bouncy ball game.

Poor waiter did the best he could with the amount of people we had (30+). Crispy tacos we're good but most of the food was not salted and too spicy (hot). Margaritas were gross, I gave mine away. Had to wait 15 minutes for an iced tea refill and no teaspoon or Splenda. All in all, it was a good visit.

Everything was excellent. Loved the Queso and Beans in particular. Edit: Has the chicken fajitas this time. They were OK. A bit uninspired. One kid liked the Chicken Me Enchiladas, the other didn't. Their refried beans need to be smoother.

Good and affordable - tell qualities I look for in any lunch. Parking is slightly limited, but if respectful - I'm sure street parking isn't the worst idea. Also loving the outdoor space and breakfast tacos.

Nice atmosphere, plenty of seating options and great happy hour specials. The food is good, nothing that will blow your expectations away, but satisfying and well priced.

Came for the breakfast tacos. We were super happy to find out they have Cafe de la olla! The tacos are pretty hearty—so unless you're planning on chowing down, stick
