I am a support worker and last night I was taking a young man with down syndrome out clubbing, dancing and socializing. He was quite tired and while waiting for an Uber he sat down and took off his shoes and this was unfortunately near the most incredibly detached and horrible bouncer I've encountered. For context, he sat down 5 meters from the door against the wall. They kept trying to push us on, telling us to move, hounding us. The young man's feet were hurting and he was not moving any time soon which was one of his behaviours, I tried explaining this but the male bouncer starting getting aggressive saying things like "you better move him soon" and "I'm starting to lose my patience". I ended up having to get one of the other workers to help me drag this young man as he couldn't stand (with his consent and explaining the situation of course) so this bouncer wouldn't get violent with us. The young man was crying because he was so distressed. It was just disgusting and left a huge damper on a really fun night, all because this bouncer thought he was exercising his "powers" in a righteous manner when in actuality he was threatening two calm support workers and a young man with a disability who needed understanding, not some pitiful display of toxic masculinity. Any establishment that doesn't hire bouncers that are fit to work with and understand and accept a diverse range of people, needs to take a serious hard look at their impact, because it doesn't just affect the people looking to enter their nightclub.

I've been to New Guernica once and highly recommend. I know I'll be going there again. I stayed to the cheap drinks and they did not disappoint, the bartenders are all friendly and despite being really busy, the bartender I was served by the majority of the times I went up to the bar remembered who I was each and every time, asked how my previous drink was and that sort of thing. it was service that was really nice to receive in such a busy club. the first thing i noticed once entering the venue however is that it was very cramped compared to other clubs I have been to, however this is not a bad thing! Usually in small venues the dance floor gets hot and you spend the whole night sweating out what you've just drank, I did not find this to be the case with New Guernica. It was not too cold either, i was quite comfortable in dress pant and a nice button up shirt. The decor inside the venue is also very nice, there are vines on the roof by the dance floor and small rotundas around for seating as well as beer barrel style tables and if you're in the queue for the toilet there is an arcade machine just outside the door. On a side note that may be different each time, but many of the other club goers are quite friendly, I went alone and either sitting, standing or dancing people would say hi, check if you are okay or dance with you. I came out of the club with several new mates. To summarise, this club is 100% worth going to and one of my favourites thus far. I will be there again no doubt about it.

Super fun place with really amazing staff and bartenders. The lighting and visuals are next level. Theres also a cool Melbourne vibe to it with comfy chairs and booths, carpet upstairs as well as tables and stools. They've got enough bathrooms so you're not waiting long, and have an ungendered bathroom too. They have a cloak room, smokers area (which does get pretty full), and an upstairs area where you can chill out a bit but also watch the dance floor below. The bar is set back from the dance floor a bit, so you can easily get a drink without getting bumped into by people dancing. They've got a variety of different artists that play, the audio is great, there's a tobacco vending machine which is handy. It really helps encapsulate what Melbourne is about, truly an iconic place. It does seem to attract more of a younger crowd (18-30), more so towards the younger demographic, so its perhaps not somewhere to go if you want a quiet drink with friends. There is also one of those scanning machines to check ID before you come in, but there are heaters so waiting in line doesn't get too cold. Great place to party, and I'd recommend bringing any friends from overseas or interstate to check it out. Super handy location for food, public transport or to catch a ride home.

Went for after-work drinks on 12 October 2018, a Friday night - with a group of 15. 2 for 1 drink special was excellent. Woodfired pizzas and nachos shared were reasonably priced, and everyone commented that the different toppings were all tasty. A1 customer service was discovered when I got home and realised I left my scarf behind. When I called the venue at about 9:15pm - a recorded msg gave details for making bookings or sending an email re:lost property. I sent an email, and got an automated reply confirming they received it...but not to expect a reply until Tuesday the next week. Lo and behold! Within 15 minutes, I received an sms from Dan the venue manager advising a staff member picked up a scarf, with a photo of it - and it was mine When I sent a reply sms to ask if I could pick it up after work on their next early opening night of the next Friday, Dan reply-sms'd - almost instantly - I could collect it earlier from the related cafe Chuckle Park, from Tuesday to Thursday from 11am. I collected my scarf on Tuesday after work from a staff member who kindly ran upstairs - no fuss. Lovely to see the fabulous care managers and staff have for customers - even after they leave. Thank you, Dan.

Went to go to New Guernica becuase I'd had a previous good experience there a few months back. I was at my brother's wedding so I'd had a few drinks. The bouncer told me to get some water and come back. I went to 7 and got some water and had a chill. I went back the bouncer said no you need to take some more time out. I went and had more water and food. I went back this time a different security gaurd said you have to wait half an hour. ridiculous. I just wanted to have a dance because I know the music is generally good but I won't bother going back there anymore because security are not good at their job in my opinion, they can't recognise who is aggressive and who just wants a good time. I would have spent $50+ there and had a boogie and alls good but apparently I'm too drunk for security yet I can still write this post. thanks new guernica I thought you were cool

  • Dom Tor

The people to the front door don't let me walk in because I was kick out from other place before ! No true! Tell them a big Jim and to rude Mr! Bruce Lee. I wasn't rude, aggressive or acting ecthic. I will prefer a raw true. Mate I don't let us go in. I was there to look after a group of work colleagues as I am the older. Tell to the security to drop the attitude because if they think they can be like that and ruin a night out .... Tell them to go and do a treatment to the mental health department. I suggest for U it will be better if U leave this place ! What a fun treat?!?! Are U serious! I am not a drinker, I am not on drugs.... And please tell tor Bruce Lee him isn't allowed to touch me or any other guess of that place. I could tell from they face the frustration and the big man attitude. Nice stuff

  • Tom Bicanic

I bought a ticket for the Eat the Beat event. On approach I was close to a group but not with them and was asked you with those guys, I said no. I was asked you with friends? (I was clearly not), I said no. Are they coming later, I said no. You go out by yourself I said yeah I normally go with DJ Jnett as I am a friend of hers. Anyway he said what do you do, I said I dance..... he checked my ID, bag etc. I understand they have a job to do but it is personal and awkward. I know it's not common but i dont have friends so it should be addressed better. Anyway I was let in, he did speak to me nicely. I would give a 5 star if it was a more friendly greeting. The DJs put on amazing show and the music and atmosphere was great.

Went to New Guernica an event a few weekends ago, not a place I had been before or would go to normally but I couldn’t miss DJ Assault. We paid $40-$45, got there early to ensure we got in before it reached capacity but boy oh boy did the venue oversell tickets and kept letting people in when it was sardine-vile. We could barely move and felt totally unsafe - you expect room to move when you’re paying so much! Security was kicking people out for no legitimate reason to try and reduce numbers after they realised they had screwed up. Needs better patron management - customers experience & safety should be top priority, not $$. The venue would of made a killing that night.

  • Carla Sanchez

We went the night of the 16.Jan.2021 we paid 25 dollars each to be mistreated and verbally abused by a very rude staff member because we went into an area that apparently was restricted. The area was part of the dance floor and we figured out later (it was not evident) that it was a sort of "VIP" area, that was limited but another patron open it up and this staff member started yelling and pushing all of us it was about 10 of us that entered the area because it seemed available, I mean it was the dance floor!!!!. We left after that, 50 dollars for less than 20 minutes and undeserved mistreatment. Do not recommend.

  • Alessio Mazza

The bouncer out front was the most unfriendly, despicable person I have ever had the fortune of meeting. Lloyd, was rude and very condescending. I used to love this place , but recently the new staff have not only been rude but have also been disrespectful - I asked why my friend was not let inside and the moment I asked, I was threatened to be kicked out and hands were waved in my face by “Lloyd”. he additionally repeated information with his hands in an incredibly condescending manner. Due to its condescending and rude front of house - I never name and shame but Lloyd was so rude I had to!!

  • Emma Fitt

Worst club I've ever been too. Refused entry, which is a fair call not going to lie, drank a bottle of water and had a ridiculous amount of food. I was allowed in after a full hour but still refused service at the bar. Maybe I am being over dramatic but I've never had fun here. I've been accidentally hit in the face multiple times, had to scrape glass out of my shoes, they have an excessively high eftpos minimum and have severe issue with creepy guys that their ON DANCE FLOOR security seems to be oblivious of. What's the point of security if they can't even help a single girl.

  • Gracie Vanderzalm

Ok the club is fine (good music and well priced drinks) but the security outside the venue are so RUDE!!! Some guy shoved me in the line (on purpose) so I stood up for myself. The security yelled at me and said I cant stand up to guys hurting me and threatened me with a ‘lifetime ban,’ (yeah shiver me timbers ). When I left 2-3 hours later the same guy shone the ID light into my eyes and goes “oh is is blinding you”. There was no reason to do that, he was simply being a jerk because of earlier. The security are rude and make women like myself feel unsafe and targeted.

  • Marcus Motteram

Classically Melbourne, a fantastic quirky visual tapestry, how places in Melbourne do this better than any other city continues to amaze me. Loved the drinks and the Jugs of cocktail, especially when it doesn't take longer than a couple of minutes to get it. The music was brilliant and finally a place with a lovely warm sound. Managed to find several places to get comfy with friends, especially loved the cubby house. Danced the night away with some particular wacky fun in the kitchen?!!

  • ankit khare

1.Tursday to saturday, place gets crazy till 5am. 2.Entry charges are nominal = 5-15$ 3.Music is amazing,2 different rooms/DJ sets so you can dance to different beats practically at the same venue. 4.Drinks are reasonable. 5.Dedicated smoking area. 6.Plenty of couches to rest and wiggle again. 7.Staff is super friendly. 8.All age groups,backpackers,locals..you will find everyone getting crazy. 9.Saturdays are eat the beat special..party from 10pm to 10 am (5-10 am after party)

  • Robert Prije

Seemed ok but I couldn't really enjoy it long as I had to return to my friend outside who was denied entry. My friend from out of the city was denied entry because he wasn't carrying identification they accepted. He had a print out of his passport. He's clearly over 18 so this wasn't an age thing as the bouncer confirmed. They were just being extremely thorough about rules of entry. I understand, but as a customer, this seemed a bit excessively strict to me.

  • Zachary

The venue is great, Bouncers can be weird and picky. Nearly didn't get let in because I was just a solo guy in the line - Bouncers were saying all different excuses like student night, Max limit etc. So I called my girlfriend inside to go to another place and when they realised her and her group of friends will be leaving they made an "exception". Other than the judgemental door staff - Good crowd of people, no hostility, friendly and responsive bar staff.

  • Luca Culic

The guise of escapism and hedonism that envelops this venue beyond 2am paints a tableau of the most deplorable facets of humanity. It is as if the night's descent has unveiled an unsettling, raw tapestry of excess, where self-indulgence reigns supreme. New Guernica itself fulfils all the prerequisites for a captivating nocturnal escapade, however the patrons must pause and reckon with the absurdity of their actions. Some of them were disgusting.

  • Ela H

Really disappointed... My bf and I pre-purchased tickets for an event here.. however when we arrived the bouncers wouldn't let my bf in cause his ID scanned as being used as a fake ID previously! He lost his licence 2 years ago... that's not his fault if someone else uses it to get into a club... plus the ban was lifted last year but they still refused to let him in! the bouncer was also very rude when we tried to honestly explain him that.

  • Esseland T

What I can say a space that's stood the test of time. Been going there before it was even NG. Still offering cheap drink deals and pumping out okay "radio" friendly tunes. Can get a little claustrophobic with the floor plan configuration. Pluses - it has a smoking area which isn't outside the building and good responsible staff who will tell you or your friends if they need to hydrate. Not that I've been told to yet.

  • -

Yeah look it's not exactly a club, music was bar music (boring barely techno). Bartenders are rude. The ticket sellers at the door gave opposite information to the bartenders (are they even working together ???). Paid $25 entry for boring music and rude staff, would rather pay more to actually enjoy myself. Some of the responses from the owner on their google reviews are actually shocking as well... attitude much.

  • Angela Pawley

Terrible club experience. I was let into the club with my waterbottle, the bouncer saw it and said it was okay to bring in. Later on throughout the night, I had it out and another bouncer saw it, kicked me out of the club, and REFUSED TO GIVE MY WATERBOTTLE BACK! When I tried asking for it back, the bouncer outside wouldn't even look at me. Very rude and unreasonable staff. And overall, the music was terrible.

  • Diego Lopez

I booked the backhouse badgers for my wife's birthday and I have to say we had an awesome night. I contacted Dan to make the booking and he was really helpful at getting everything sorted. The drinks were okay and affordables and the pizza was really good. My only complains is that the floor was dirty and sticky and the eftpos minimun of 20 $ is high consider bringing cash. Overall 4/5 would recommend.

  • Kaiden Kondo

Didn't realize that Thursday's were free, so I ended up spending quite a bit for entry on a Friday. Despite this, the music here was the best I have heard in a club in Melbourne so far. A super great introduction to techno for me. Almost lost my Invisalign dentures and panicked but the staff were very friendly and cooperative and kept them for me! Overall, 4/5. Cannot wait to come again!

  • Stephanie Schmidt

We were here tonight. Depending on which bar personal you talked to you would be told they are out of red wine for sangria jugs (one guy said they were out at the start of the night) or not. The DJ played great music until the venue turned into a club and then turned all dooff dooff. Dance floor cleared right out but neither the DJ nor stuff seemed to care. Won't be coming back....

  • Teemu Kainulainen

I was very excited to visit the venue based on my friends' feedback. But I was never allowed to enter - despite of holding a legit Finnish and Singaporean ID. I was told a passport is needed, and even that won't guarantee an entry. I was totally sober and polite, but the encounter was a degrading one. I will make sure none of my Singaporean unwanted mates will visit the joint...

  • Ricky Nelson

Security are opinionated and god complexed. They don't do there duties to the fullest. Even turning a blind eye or allowing things to happen before stepping in does occur, especially outside the club. ( Where most are mostly intoxicated) I asked two security from New Guernica to call police after being assaulted outside the club which they witnessed then attended then walked

  • A Google User

If you're in for a so-so music & a racist crowd, hop in! My Asian friend was nudge to the side with a finger by some random white guy as if my friend had leprosy or something. Rude as heck. If you're Asian, you'll ended up dancing alone there for the rest of the night even though you're just in for a dance without running any hook-up shitez on others. It is a fact.

  • Scott Schneider

Terrible organisation. Advertised on web for free entry. Arrived on time and charged entry, even when doorperson shown with the live facebook page that read 'free entry'. Justification was that some nights they decide to charge because of international DJ's. The two listed DJ's that evening who performed were both local. Friends who entered before us did not pay.

  • Jordan

New Guernica has a real potential to be one of the leading club in Melbourne. However, the organizers for the Eat the Beat parties are clearly too greedy for money and let way too many people inside the club which make the experience inside unbearable. Way too many people on the dance floor, to the point where it’s impossible to dance and enjoy the DJ’s set.

  • Hope Carter

Literally the worst club I've ever been to. Literally 12 people in the club on a Friday night, smoky and made us cough so much, paid $20 to be in there for 30 seconds. While we were there half of the customers let in were charged, half weren't charged anything, and we were refused a refund. Will never be going back, and I highly recommend you don't either.

  • Daya Shankar

One of the worst security ive seen in any of the club. He said he wouldn't let us in. Asked him why, he said no reason and he don't like us. We never met the dude before. All I can say that he was Racist. I would definitely not recommend anyone to go here. Every single other club in Melbourne is way much better than this one. Please make a wise choice.

  • Nathan Mania

In terms of facilitating and mitigating a safe environment I couldn't speak less enough of a venue where their egotiscal driven security guards revert to physically enforcing themselves upon others. This completely kills the night for a group of responsible people just doing the right thing. Not to mention the music was mediocre at best. 0/10

  • Mel N

The music the dj played was amazing on Friday night. Downside: Female bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. There were black spots of mould and what looked like used toilet paper stuck to the inside of the bowl that looked like it had been glued there. Broken glass and dirty cups everywhere. The floors were sticky. $30 entry.

  • M Shuaib (MS)

I was with a friend and we had valid tickets and pssport but still we were denied entry for no reason. The guy at the entry point refused to talk at all and asked us to leave. What is the point of selling tickets in advance if you are going to deny entry. We deserve an explanation and a refund for our tickets.

  • Chelsea Eddowes

Interesting bar... pretty cool alternative music playing and it also features a dance floor. Quite a dark venue, with lasers and strobe lights etc. Only reason I don't give it 4 or 5 stars is because the venue is a little dirty, and the customer service only okay. Drinks are on the cheaper side. Worth a visit!

  • Nicholas Creed

Super high entry fee ($25 + $5 cloak) and very average DJ’s but a cool venue. Packed on a Saturday night so I expected something. Simple doof, no passion and amateur/cheap DJ. Quite disappointing after hearing it was a great EDM place. Only 2 rooms and a lot of dudes. Maybe for $5 lol, won’t be back.

  • Max Tsiavos

Terrible experience. Bar tenders are not friendly nor willing to serve more than one drink. Over priced entry and music is off a Spotify playlist. Would not recommend for $25 entry. Drinks at the bar are way over priced. Save your money and go to another club on smith, much better value is available

  • Georg Mueller

Arrived there on a Thursday after 12. Good music and probably 60;40 boys to girls. As the time went by music got bad. Went to the "2nd dance floor" which played the same kind of music and was much smaller. After all the club was pretty decent, would recommend for a chiller night out on Thursdays.

  • Naara Alegria

Price of drinks were cheap and pretty good. It's $5 entry after 11pm and free before. The music really wasn't great. Myself and my group left after an hour just because of the DJ. Can only hope other nights are better. But even with how cheap everything was, it was a waste of time.

  • Finn Weiner

If been there at a thuersday night and it was dope! The first two hours it was 100% my music. But after that a secound floor opened it was good too. 7$ for a spirit, 3$ for a beer till midnight. I was alone and it was just a good night. Would recommend it any time …

  • Queen Goddess

We have been a dependable contributor to the dance community in Melbourne for over a decade. New Guernica is largely recognised as a Melbourne Institution. Trust that you will be sweating on the dancefloor to Australia’s most talented Djs and artists! Lo disfrute mucho!

  • Jodi Birchall

Pleasing surprise find in Melbourne... Friday night specials included buy 1 get 1 free drink specials including $10 cocktails! Pizzas for $10 which were delicious! Dance floor opened up & we danced into the wee hours of the morning! Great place & will be back again...

  • Eziekill

Came here for holiday, read local reviews, turned out all the bounces in melb are actually down syndrome. Waited 30 mins I'm que just to have the bouncer tell me our I.D is fake and kicked us out. Then tried to fight us when we said scan it.

  • Alex Nowatsky

Very poor hygiene in that venue.Beer on tap was completely flat!To make things worse the customer service was very bad from the manager that is apparently always too busy to listen to customer enquiries!I'd avoid that place like the plague.

  • A G

Really transphobic, pretty sure its illegal to grab trans people and threaten them. Really awful behaviour towards even sober patrons. The security is policing the bathrooms making sure no one of the "wrong" gender enters. Just disgusting.

  • Kiran Reddy

I had a very bad experience with the security at the door and was very rude azzz as we even ended up showing our tix which we bought from eventbrite and then he let us in but what we had a experience with the security was very rude. (018)

  • Philippine

We paid 25 dollars online and could never get in. No refund. We were told first that our friend drunk too much, then that her ID was not acceptable because it was from another country. So we lost time and money and never entered the club

  • Antoine Patron

Had fun there, was really pleased that free water is available at the bar cause you can get a glass everytime you're feeling dehydrated. 20 bucks minimum for card, 12 for a pint of beer (not bad). Don't know if I would like it sober tbh

  • Jordan Woodroffe

I went there and asked the ticket staff what the name ment and they told me to F$%& off. Rude staff, terrible atmosphere, 25$ entry, overpriced drinks, generally a bad place to be. With all the amazing choices nearby go elsewhere. More

If you're looking for a crowded techno, psy-trance music place on Thursdays and during the weekends, this place is a good option. However, if you are into EDM or a more commercial music style, this place might not be the best option.

  • Christian Boeve

Nothing bad to say about this place.. Great venue Always banging good techno, decent drinks at regular prices: Vodka Soda $12 Cool lights and soundsystem Also went to subclub which I found a little less fun but also pretty good

  • AyyZee

The new venue is very nice, it's like a club pulled straight out of a John wick movie. Only downside? John wick himself didn't come in and shoot me in the head to save me from the minimal base loop that went on for 4 hours...

  • Marcus Ray

Always been great. But saturdays Etb was overly packed and hard to get through any of the crowds but can deal with that. Was surprised that entry was cheaper at the door opposed to the online tickets. $35 at the door, $43.

  • nirvan ganapathy

The best techno I have heard in Melbourne, the interior is really unique with the funky lights and there’re two dance floors. The drinks are also really cheap. Would definitely recommend this place for a good night out.

  • Anna Tanti

Couldnt give my bag back for half an hour saying they were "too busy to serve you"....there was glass everywhere In ladies bathroom the whole night yesterday but noone would clean it, disgusting, never again …

  • Hazel Greene

Unfortunately this bad review is due to the rude and degrading way my friend was treated by one of the bouncers when we were trying to enter. We did nothing wrong and his attitude towards us was so rude.

Easily the best place I have been to in Melbourne. The staff are really sweet and the prices are cheap when you go on a weekday (Thursday, Friday). Love how the people are so welcoming.

  • Sarah-jo Watt-Linnett

Venue is a fun rabbit warren with sticky carpet from it's pub origins. Staff are professional & friendly. Lacks the oddball charm of the old venue, but things might improve with time.

  • Benjamin MICHONNET

Great club with reallyyy good DJs!! Always a great atmosphere. Security at the door are sound. They could be a bit more strict inside with the weirdos trying to pick up every girls!

  • Arjun Vishnu

Not a very big venue, had been there for Hex movement when Paolo Ferrara and Lorenzo Raganzini had played. Bouncers were a bit rude. Acoustics of the place were okay, not the best.

  • T Ski

Great vibe fun helpful staff, excellent food & drinks deals, tasty pizzas: were very accommodating about group bookings in these hard to commit to group activities times.

  • Maiten Deforel

I was there for the after party of Boris Brejcha, the security on the door was absolutely slow. We wait for more than 2hs to go into the venue. Insane. I wont come back.
