Title: "Unmissable Historical Experience at the New York Transit Museum" Review: Five stars aren't quite enough for the remarkable journey through time I experienced today at the NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn. This gem is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of public transportation, with an astounding variety of exhibits that transport you back to the early days of the NYC subway system. Getting to the museum presented a slight challenge as the e-ticket sent to my mobile device didn't include the address or directions. It's a minor oversight, but even locals might struggle to guide you to lesser-known landmarks in a bustling metropolis like New York. Even a couple of street vendors in the vicinity were unsure of the museum's location. Unfortunately, the guard at the gate was not overly helpful, disregarding my concerns about the e-ticket's lack of information. However, I sincerely hope that the museum management considers this an area of improvement, making it easier for future visitors to find this historical treasure. Once inside, any earlier inconveniences paled compared to the sheer delight of exploring the museum. The NY Transit Museum is housed in a decommissioned subway station. Its exhibits encompass the evolution of NYC's public transport system, including vintage subway cars and an extensive collection of model trains. The exhibitions are meticulously curated, and the interactive displays and educational programs are engaging and informative. I was fortunate to encounter an official named Derek, whose passion for the museum's history was truly inspiring. He was receptive to my suggestions regarding ticket information, which reassured me that the museum takes visitor feedback seriously. His grand tour was the highlight of my visit. Derek's extensive knowledge and dedication to sharing the rich history within the museum's walls provided an unforgettable learning experience. His guided tour offered deeper insights than the exhibits alone, transforming my visit into an immersive experience. And the cherry on top - ringing the bell on one of the vintage cars under Derek's guidance, a charming video memento I'll cherish. Despite a couple of hiccups initially, the NY Transit Museum proved to be an invaluable repository of New York City's public transportation history. The staff (especially Derek) were knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about sharing this captivating history with visitors. For anyone wishing to delve into the historical depths of NYC's public transport system, visiting this museum is a journey you won't want to miss.

The New York Transit Museum is an absolute gem for both locals and tourists. Located in a beautifully restored subway station, it offers a fascinating journey through the history of transportation in NYC. The exhibits are engaging and informative, showcasing the evolution of subway systems, buses, and other modes of transit. Walking through the vintage trains and buses is like stepping back in time. The museum also features interactive displays that entertain and educate visitors of all ages. From the intricate model train layouts to the hands-on simulators, there's something for everyone. The knowledgeable staff is passionate about the subject matter and eager to share their insights. They provide interesting anecdotes and answer any questions you may have, enhancing the overall experience. One highlight is the Underground Home exhibit, a recreated 1930s subway station that gives a glimpse into the daily lives of subway construction workers. It's a fascinating step back in time. The museum also hosts special events and workshops that cater to different interests, making each visit unique. Whether you're a transportation enthusiast, history buff, or simply curious about NYC's vibrant past, the New York Transit Museum is a must-visit. It celebrates the city's transportation heritage in a captivating and accessible way.

A museum inside an abandoned subway station. For that novelty alone, it's worth the visit. Inside is a profusion of transit paraphernalia, from fare gates to turnstiles to stylish and often funny subway advertising campaigns from days gone by. The museum, especially the top floor, is rather small and becomes crowded quickly, so make sure to come early. When I went, there were only a certain number of tickets available at any given time, in order to ameliorate the crowding problem, so make sure to get your tickets ahead of time. The lower floor is the gleaming crown jewel of the museum, filled with train cars preserved from eras gone by, these solemn goliaths of forgotten ages. Some are elegant and ornamental, lavish reminders of the glamor of the early subway system in the early part of the 20th century, while others are more utilitarian, though still sleek and stylish. If you are at all interested in transit or the history of travel in New York, you have to make a voyage out to Brooklyn to see this idiosyncratic and radiantly comprehensive museum.
The museum itself is so cool and amazing. I love the old trains that you can walk through in the lower level. But I give it four stars because of the crowd. There are many children running around and screaming as if they’re in a toy store which really downgraded the entire experience. It was chaotic and annoying. The parents don’t even look after their kids or teach them proper etiquette. The staff did not do anything about the kids running around screaming. On top of that, even some of the adults were aggressively pulling and yanking on the old train handles and poles. Not sure why they were doing that(?) but definitely zero respect for the historical trains and of course there’s no security watching out for those people. So I would recommend going on an So I would recommend going on a weekday when there’s less kids. Other than that, it’s a pretty cool museum.

Absolutely wonderful, took my nephew here on a Sunday and it was an absolute delight. Easy to buy affordable tickets online, and the staff were welcoming and good vibes. In the past I had heard it was a smaller museum, but my experience was that they had way more than I expected and extremely generous offerings. Their collection of old subway cars that you can literally walk through and sit on is bountiful. My nephew and I had the time of our lives, learned so much, and both of us got in for $15. Absolutely planning to go back here, barely had a chance to read all the detailed placards and since it’s so affordable I feel like I can go back many more times. Easy to access from multiple subways in downtown Brooklyn. A+!

Transit nerd alert. The New York Transit Museum is a unique fusion of a subway station and a museum. It offers a captivating journey through a century of transit history in New York, where the vintage cars have retained their authentic look, feel, and even smell. Exploring the museum allowed me to immerse myself in the bygone era, discovering fascinating insights into life through the train advertisements and the food preferences of the past. In today's world, the cut and cover method used to construct the subway system would be deemed unimaginable, but it was this very unconventional approach that contributed to the remarkable rise of NYC. These trains were not just modes of transportation; they carried with them the dreams and aspirations of countless individuals.
Went there on a Sunday. It wasn't too crowded for an appointment at 10am. The kids enjoys the old trains in the lower level and the history of all things. You can probably be in and out of the musuem within an hour. Then you can eat at one of the many restaurants closed by the area at noon. Even better, after lunch, you can head to the end of Atlantic Ave, there is a nice playground and water park by the pier. Kids would have tons of fun there. Tip: Try to book the earlier tickets on Sunday. Free Street Parking is easier, and much less crowd. Also, if you are a member of Brooklyn Children Museum or Staten Island Children Museum, you can reserve tickets for free!

I had a blast! Simply an amazing museum. I have learned so much about the history of the subway construction, the toll in immigrants life, the challenges, the technologies and their evolution. The absolute highlight for me was a working 1936 signal tower with fully functioning systems that is tracking real trains on the near by subway line!!! That’s crazy!!! Also very interesting to see a collection of the original ads of the time in every subway car. The staff is very passionate and open to any question. Super happy. I can’t recommend it more. It is also very affordable compared to most museums in NYC.

This is a great collection of public transit relics from subway cars to payment methods. There’s extensive photos documenting the entire process of developing the metro as well as its impact on the surrounding neighborhoods. There’s also tons of old subway cars to explore filled with their original ads, like huge time capsules. The museum itself is in an old train station underground. I didn’t notice elevators so I’m not sure if this is accessible to folks who can’t use stairs (though I have to imagine there must be an accessible entrance?). They also don’t have a bag check so be prepared to lug around whatever is with you. There’s also a small gift shop with apparel, memorabilia, trinkets, and toys.
This my second trip to this museum. The entry price differs for seniors, kids and disabled = discounted to $5. I purchased tickets while waiting online. The entry was $10 per adult. I enjoyed the museum. Very interesting. Cool props and loaded with information. Brought back memories of transit travel. They have a Spot It game for visitors to learn more and entertain the kids, with locating items. That was nice to experience. The restrooms were clean. Souvenirs are priced well for unique items. Museum Crew was polite, helpful and knowledgeable.

A great place to learn about New York City's Transit System; it is historical, super engaging, and even fun for kids. I am an avid genealogist and amateur historian, born and raised in the Bronx. I enjoyed every second of it even though I am on the train a million times a week. I brought my father and brother. It was great; families everywhere, couples, old and young. I suggest buying your tickets in advance and arriving a few minutes before your allotted time. Don't go too early and don't go too late.

What a fantastic place. The museum itself is set up so nicely for an afternoon adventure and all of the vintage train cars below in the "station" are so much fun to experience over and over. The recent (?) Inclusion of the scavenger hunt is awesome and I think if they had multiple versions of the sheet, it would be great for return visitors. I'm sure they could do that as well since so many of the nice people there are super knowledgeable of the history of the MTA. Highly recommended.

An underrated museum. Depicts the history of the subway, the challenges faced and how the city evolved in parallel. It has 2 floors where the upper one has some exhibits and the lower one has actual older train coaches, the control station and the signals! (It's an unused subway station) You can enter these coaches, sit and take pictures. Fun to see the style/design/colours used before. Some Ads and Warnings are hilarious and take us back to the time Shop merchandise seemed a bit on the higher side. Staff is really nice. Museum is totally worth 10 bucks, highly recommend!
The New York Transit museum is amazing to understand the industrial history of NYC and the USA. The museum has photos from the early construction and model trains from each of its iterations at the lower level. During the summer the entrance of the museum can get a little hot and sweaty but after the first exhibit it will space out to be comfortable and breathable. A fun place to take children and take photos along the model trains and buses.

This place was a great place to experience the history of the transit system. The staff were kind and there was no line to enter. The museum includes a lot of interactive parts including turnstiles, old trains and buses. I was able to spend around 2 and a half hours there from reading all the exhibits and interacting with everything. Great place to spend the afternoon or morning. There's also a gift shop with a plethora of metro themed goodies.

Fabulous museum located in Brooklyn! Highly recommend visiting whether you are a tourist visiting the city or a local, the subway system is a very complex system that has taken over a hundred years of work to get to where it is today and this museum showcases all of it along with the bus system as well! The vintage train cars are incredible and really give you an idea of what it must have been like to use the system in those time periods.

What a great museum! I take the subway all the time, and it was quite fascinating to see how it was built, as well as see all the old school trains! The old RTS bus had the nostalgia factor :,) The museum is in an old subway station (what better place for a transit museum!) Ticket prices of only $10 a person were totally worth it! They even had the old subway tokens on display! Made me appreciate our eclectic modes of transport more!

I love this museum, it is located in the decommissioned Court Street subway station (what better location for a transit museum), the station was opened in 1936 and closed 10 years later in 1946 due to its proximity to other stations. The cars still have the old advertisements along with their period furnishings. Just sitting inside one of these cars sends you back in time, especially with the very moderate number of visitors. This is quite an exceptional museum.
Great for kids. 10 per adult. Kids were free. The kids enjoyed the lower level and seeing the older models and playing on the old busses. Since this place is located in an older station Ada almost seems ignored. Most of the underground does not have ac. It would be interesting to have the old tokens as purchasable souvenirs.

Amazing museum! I loved learning about the MTA! This museum tells you how the subway was built from the early days. You can see tons of old photographs. Learn about the subway throughout all the years! You can see a bunch of historic items. Check out the turnstiles from throughout the years. Go inside all the old train cars from all the decades. You can learn about the busses, trains, and trolleys. Check it out it was amazing! I want to go again!
Underrated museum built in an old subway station. Informative, well designed and kid friendly. Plenty of historical information and model subway cars to explore. For only $10 its well worth a stop if you are in the area! Beware that there is no a/c except in the gift shop so a cold/hot nyc day will feel similar underground.

The New York Transit Museum was a great experience learning about how the subway system was built. At $10 a person it's very reasonably priced. There's a ton of great pictures and artifacts to explore with detailed descriptions on how the system came to life. This is one of the few museums in New York that has affordable prices, children who love trains enjoy it and you can learn more about the history of this city. The children loved this experience! I recommend this museum, the prices of the trains are much cheaper to buy them in this store than in Amazon for those who want to collect them. The truth is that we as adults enjoy visiting it.
A nice gem in Brooklyn that is interesting for both kids and adults. Located in an old subway station this place has exhibits or if you want just wander around old train cars from different eras. Loved looking at the old advertisements in the cars that were accurate to the period the cars were in operation. Definitely one of the cheaper options in NYC at $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
Entrance is down a set of stairs off the street into an old subway station. Two levels, 1st level has a lot of photos, & artifacts, including various turnstiles. The lower level is different train cars on both sides of the station. Also has a store. So much to see.

Fantastic transport museum housed in a disused subway station. A really comprehensive exhibition on the building and development of the New York transit system - I do love a transport museum and this was a great find on a trip to Brooklyn. Plenty to keep adults and kids occupied! More

A fantastic museum. It really feels like a love letter to NYC through the eyes of the people who built, ran, and used the transit system. The decommissioned vehicles feel like stepping into a time capsule, complete with outdated ads and slogans. Highly recommended
Adult admission is only $10 and definitely worth it. Good mix of history and entertainment. Saw lots of kiddos, but great for any age.

I can’t believe I’ve never been here. The museum is an actual subway entrance. Not to give too much away, I’ll just say I was pleasantly surprised and had a good time.

Classic spot, full of fascinating photos and artifacts. Some of the coolest things are the old trains, which stretch back over 100 years. Some of the panels could use updating, but overall a great place to visit - even for this native New Yorker! More
Great collection of the history of transit system. The high light was the vintage carts and trains at the bottom level. Great experience for the kids!

very interesting museum! took us around 1.5-2 hours to see of most of the exhibits just note that there is not AC in most of the museum which made it pretty tough, maybe it’s better to come on a cold day definitely suitable for kids and strollers
LOVE this Museum. It’s in an old subway station and has subway cars from different decades, even with the original ads!

The transit museum is really nice. You can see the process of creating the subways and they touch on how the workers were often taken from poor communities, mistreated, and the conditions they worked in. They have the old turnstiles and the
A wealth of beautifully preserved transportation history. The presentation is excellent too, being down in an old subway station. This is a must-see if you're in New York and you're passionate about transit and trains. Guides are extremely
Great place to learn about the subway system in New York City. I also highly recommend the guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the system and made the visit a lot more interesting. The gift shop had many cute

This museum has been on my list for a while. Decided to swing buy during a free Sunday and thought it was a great way to spend roughly 2.5 hours. It’s not huge but has a breadth of information to read on the walls - the photos were also
This is a GREAT museum. So much history and great visuals and experiences to see it all. Both for subways and buses - took my two year old boy who is very active and it was a great interactive space. Super affordable. Highly recommend.
It's a perfect place for everyone to learn about the development of New York City's public transportation.

It is so fun walking through vintage trains and turnstiles and learning about the fascinating history of helping New Yorkers stay on the move! Really fun for kids and adults alike -- a must see in NYC.
Highly recommended! From entering the museum through a converted Subway entrance to being able to walk through all the old cars going back to the 1900s it was tons of fun and really interesting.
So much fun! We went through it in about 2 hours but could have stayed for more. Worth every penny ($10).

Well kept museum balancing fun with actual historical and literary info. I recommend for all ages though it seemed kids were getting all the fun playing roles in transit trains and buses ;)
My son absolutely loved this museum. The life-sized buses were so fun and the collection of historical trains were so cool to walk through. You felt like you were going through time.
Excellent place for spending time and experiencing the history of transportation in NY. For kids and adults as well. You can spend easily an hour there.
Very nice and they have an activity for kids on the lower level.

Really cool museum with lots of subway cars almost all of which you can go on! And a great gift shop too which I thought was reasonably priced.
Last visited 15 yrs ago. There are some newer displays but otherwise about the same. A good visit if you love transit and/or have kids who do.
My kids always have an amazing time here. My toddler loves playing on the buses.
