I was initially very reluctant to write this review as I have been going to Newlands for rugby matches for the past 25 years. The stadium is and will always be a legend! It frequently draws the faithful crowds so there is always a good atmosphere during games. Entrances are well demarcated and there are more than enough attendants to help you find your seat. There is a beer-garden next the stadium which is opened during big matches and it's a nice option to grab a beer and build up some "gees" (spirit) prior to the match. The stadium however is showing the signs of aging and money not being allocated to refurbish it - for example the sound system within the stadium doesn't work well as you can't make out what is being said, and the big screen frequently gives issues. Regarding parking, there are a number of schools and fields surrounding the stadium that are used for parking on match days. These areas are all within walking distances of the stadium and have a fixed parking fee payable in cash. Overall this stadium will always have a special place in my heart, but it needs a lot of TLC to get back to its glory days.

Was a great experience watching the Stormers play against the Sharks at Newlands Stadium. I believe for safety reasons you not allowed to take in anything consumable of your own. Even if it's a bottle or container of water or small snack. Consumables inside are overpriced. A donut costs R15 for one and the donut ain't big at all. But we enjoyed the live game none the less. Side-front seats are the best compared to sitting at the horizontal ends of the stadium. Possibly being able to receive the ball as it drops into the stands. Obviously a lot of Stormers fans since its the Western Cape rugby team. And it was their home ground. So fun was had! Arrive early to find parking nearby. Or if you don't mind walking too far, you could park in stadium on mains covered parking or Cavendish Square. We paid R50 for one of the parking zones right outside the stadium. And few food stalls were found enroute to the entrance. The first line of security were willing to assist in finding our entrance towards our seats. And there's security right before the seats and markings to help you find your seats.

There are halaal food stands available inside and outside the stadium and vendors are constantly walking about with snacks in the crowd incase you get hungry or thirsty. A live rugby match is something you have to experience for yourself and with the crowd it makes it even that much more exciting. I recommend the grand stand seats as its protected most from the sun on hot days but being as unpredictable as Cape Town weather can be always have a jacket on hand. Furthermore they have been well organised on the days we have attended and there are security at every entrance. P.S beer is sold on the premises so be aware that there will be people drinking around you, get there at least an hour early before the game starts to avoid difficulties looking for seats and to be assisted, as well as to beat the crowd to food vendors. This stadium is a non smoking, vaping and hookah pipe zone to accommodate children who also attend.

Newlands Rugby Stadium is a historic rugby union stadium located in Cape Town, South Africa. It is one of the oldest rugby stadiums in the world and has a rich history in South African rugby. Newlands is the home ground for the Western Province Rugby Union and the Stormers, a professional rugby team in South Africa. The stadium is known for its passionate rugby atmosphere and has hosted numerous international and domestic rugby matches over the years. It is also recognized for its iconic setting against the backdrop of Table Mountain. Please note that the future of Newlands Stadium has been the subject of discussions and plans for redevelopment, so it's advisable to check for the latest updates if there have been any changes.

Had such a bad experience today at the stadium. Stewards are exceptionally rude and almost attacked us for having a bottle of water with us. Then, my girlfriends ticket did not scan and we got seperated as she had to go look for a ticket office to sort the issue out. I was not allowed to get back out to help her. The stewards are also not very helpful and did not seem in the mood to help me get to my seat or to the ticket office to fetch my girlfriend. Furthermore the stadium is old and outdated I thought it's sad that it is being demolished (as its got such a rich history). But now I think its great! We won't be visiting ever again or supporting- as we have supported a great deal in the past.

  • Gerrit Cloete

Visited the stadium for the Stormers vs Brumbies game and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of access, well planned stadium. There where no long ques and we used Laerskool Groote Schuur's rugby field for parking @R50 per car, that have security. The stadium also has security officers and attendants. Non smoking stadium. Beer and ciders where available. Bathroom was clean and tidy. Good view of the field. We came early and left late(r), it is busier when game starts and ends, as allthough not chaotic. Capetown always guarantees colorful commentary from the local supporters.

  • Mark Chapman

While the game was riveting and there was plenty of great atmosphere, the wait at the single bar that was open in the entire stand was monumental making efforts m8ss much of the game. The choice was also poor, coupled with the fact that they ran out of several beers during the match with the stadium less than 25% full which was appalling. This stadium really needs to up its game if it wants to compete with the other stadia around South Africa, or even just getting the repeat us in essence of the Western Province supporters.

  • Stefan Els

The toilets are disgusting and fast away, and buying drinks is a chore: you are limited to buying two beers at a time and the bars are very far especially if you are high up in the stands. Parking is a nightmare; using a taxi or Uber is really the only viable option, trains being as unreliable as they are. There are also relatively few restaurants and bars close by of you want a pre-game meal or drink. This venerable stadium has outlived it's usefulness.

  • Albin Klatzer

The energy of rugby fans is unbelievable, stadium itself is well equipped seats are decent depending on the amount you pay. I enjoyed watching roughly 5 games during the season and each one was amazing. I can utterly understand why people buy season passes as watching live is completely different than watching live from home. Alcohol is served throughout the game at a bar inside the stadium as well as snacks can be bought from vendors.

  • Herman M Solomon

Not very disabled friendly....disabled toilets were locked and no feedback was given after submitting a complaint....The wheelchair seating area is used as a thoroughfare for vendors and many other spectators who do not want to go down and up the stairs in front of this specific area....The area where the stairs are should be extended to prevent the wheelchair area from becoming a thoroughfare....

  • Annalena

The Newlands-Stadium is a bit old and is not the technical highest one but it's still a authentic stadium. You get food and drinks there and in general everything that u would probably need during the game. The stuff helps you to fine your seats and everyone was nice. There are defiantly better stadium but when you visit a rugby game it's not really about the stadium. So I still had a great time.

  • Divan

This is a great place when you go there you feel the history of rugby that was written here in blood, sweat and tears. It really sucks that they are closing it this year and moving the games over to that POS greenpoint stadium. It will not be the same watching the sport that made this country so great once without being in the Newlands Stadium, the one true home of South African Rugby.

  • Amanda Lade

The stadium it self it quite nice, very pretty view in the background of the mountains and food and drink was a reasonable price. The signage for where your seats are is really bad so it was difficult to find out seats. A lot of people seemed confused as to where they were seating which made the first 10 minutes of the game hard to see as people were in the way the whole time .

  • Kirsty Williams

If you ever have the chance to watch the rugby from a box, I highly recommend you do it, such a great experience. Totally changes ones idea of how rugby should be enjoyed. You are fed and totally welcomed by everyone. If you are watching from the stands, remember to bring a warm jacket, the stadium can get pretty chilly. All round great time no matter where you watch from.

  • Simba Tevera

Nothing like stepping into this stadium when the stormers are playing a good rival. Stadium is really cool and being here for a local game is a great experience. You can purchase alcohol inside the stadium but you cannot drink it at the stands just something to keep in mind. Finding parking can also be a challenge on game days so be prepared and plan your trip.

  • Frank Wilkinson

Well designed stadium, I was sitting right at the back and could still see everything. The crowd were pretty good, not as rude as They are at other South African stadiums. The bars are efficient and friendly, toilets aren't the cleanest in the world, but much better than most stadiums. Overall a very enjoyable evening watching the rugby!

  • Modiegi Maroga

It's a beautiful stadium, my issue and huge issue is with the security guys who are on duty drunk, on two occasions other people have been going out with brandy which we all know is not allowed, however they would refuse us to leave with it. The guy was rude and incompetent, needs more paitrons and waiters, the ques are way tooooo long.

  • Jay Reeler

Always a good match day atmosphere at Newlands. No beer outside the bar area at games effectively means no beer at games... unless you're prepared to watch on TV in the bar, or are lucky enough to have a box. Also, the higher seats on each tier tend to have a limited view due to the overhang, so be sure to get lower seats if possible

  • Lloyd

The location is magnificent but unfortunately management have made poor decisions. Beer is R35 out of a can (no drafts) and the only alcoholic beverage allowed out of the stadiums underground bar. While, popcorn was bin was R40. It's quite obvious they are keen on keeping adult and family supports away from the stadium. Real shame.

  • Keith Masvikeni

Gotta love the atmosphere when there's an international match . Last went there when England played South Africa. The stadium itself can get chilly though when it's after midday so a little jersey or sweater might do. By opinion the best area to seat would be the Grand Stand favourite spot to sit would be the Grand Stand side.

  • Armehl Dodgen

What a rubbish experience! Our snacks and water got confiscated by the security at the entrance gate and thrown into a clean wheely bin. When we asked for our stuff back after the game, the bin was conveniently taken away before the game ended and our stuff just disappeared. No one took responsibility. Daylight robbery.

  • Pearson Cleghorn

Watched the game between The Stormers and the Bulls. OK game with better result. Security is good and the food vendors, toilets and public areas are all clean and neat. Love the pre-game and halftime entertainment. Stands also neat and security visible at all times. Assistants also helpful with showing reserved eats.

  • Brent Eichstadt

For my first time it was a pleasant and enveloping experience. I almost thought after the Rugby game that I would become a avid supporter of rugby. The atmosphere and crowd draw you into the game, making you feel that either the referee or a 10 year long supporter. Best seating places is the Grand Stands.

  • Black Carpet Events

Security needs to be more strict. Flow of everything went well from the school grounds where we parked taking a walk to the stadium. We could unfortunately not hear anything that was said over the PA system. Even if youre are seates in block c row W railway, you need to be able to hear whats going on.

  • Liam “Jelly jr.” Carolus

Always an awesome place to be. You get to cheer on the rugby teams with various locals. There's a great 'vibe' to it. Sad to see it being destroyed by the end of the year, so get there soon to experience a real South African, especially Cape Townian, culture. It's an enjoyable place for all ages.

  • Simon Denman

Being a Sharks fan, I thought it would be torture to be there with my Sharks gear on. Instead, it has a brilliant atmosphere, with people who are passionate about their rugby. If you've never been before, then I would definitely recommend you visit it at least once for an awesome experience

  • Sinjin Swanepoel

Spontaneously went to support the Sharks here in Cape Town. The tickets were well priced, the gentlemen at the ticket counter picked the two of us excellent seats and I asked security inside for directions and he actually showed us to our seats. What tops it off, is a win by the Sharks ;)

  • Zahir Harris

Was at Newlands Rugby Stadium for the Stromers VS Blues match... The vibe was awesome, the staff were friendly and everything was easy to access, whether it be food (Halal or not), drinks, coffee; everything was easy to get.. Some of the items are pricey, so bring extra cash

  • Lazola Matshobongwana

It is such a pity that this great place, will no longer be able to hold tens of thousands of people behind their team. It will no longer have the thunderous roar so associated with it when a man crosses the whitewash. It is great to know that my last time was victorous.

  • Lionell Herringer

Was great fun especially when the Sharks beat Problems at their home ground. 80% of the Newlands faithfull were very friendly and gracious in defeat but why they had to BOO! and disrespect the goal kicker left a bad taste in my mouth. All in all good value for money.

  • C A

Who doesn't like Newlands? Its a beloved sports landmark in Cape Town. The only negative I have is that the ushers are not of the most accommodating or friendliest. When you attend for a game, go early as the queues can get quite long. Other than that I love it!

  • jason superjase du toit

iconic cricket ground with one of the best views in the world. it loses one star for the poor food options, with cash-only payment, and the super-slow ticket offices. if you bring your own food, and get your tickets in advance, this stadium is almost perfect.

  • pieter lee

The cool drink guys over charge u. Had a great expensive time with my friends. : ( rugby board needs to do something about this. Makes capetown look like a money shark operation. So sad that there rugby team gets rated by the amount you pay for a drink.

  • Brandon

Good rugby atmosphere but the stadium is a bit dated.Chairs can be broken and if you are a first time visitor it can be hard to navigate around to bathrooms or the snack shop.Newlands brewery is on premises if you decide to drink some of the gold nectar

  • Fazlin Begg

Atmosphere nice just waited to long for the coffee guy to come my way ..the 90min went so quick ..but what do they say when you have a good ..time flies ..was my 1st time on Newland very big thou...I enjoyed the game and atmosphere...will go again

  • Janelle Uys

Always love Newlands Stadium!!!! Zero stars for Computicket giving us the wrong seats. Selected and Paid full price to sit on Grand stand and got the tickets showing Railway seats in the sun. NOT OUR BEST Currie cup final experience!!!

  • Leon Hanekom

We are going to miss Newlands. What a atmosphere and we saw some the best rugby matches. The joy between people when WP/Stormers won with the smell of boerewors and the disappointment if we lose. Thanks Newlands for all the good years!

  • Juan Britz

Awesome stadium. Watched the match between Stormers and Blues. Atmosphere was awesome. Great stadium with friendly staff. Loads of food and drink vendors. Stadium was nice and clean! Sad that this piece of history will be destroyed!

  • Tredoux Smit

Good overall stadium but some aspects are outdated. No Parking available what so ever only certain opeb spaces if you are very early. Some seats are very crowded. One of the best rugby stadiums in SA when it comes to team spirit.

  • Anton le Roux

The second oldest rugby stadium in the world, Newlands is always fun to visit for awesome matches, whether it be The Stormers or Western Province, and formerly the Springboks. Parking can, however be relatively problematic.

  • Joshua Visser

This stadium's atmosphere is amazing. The seats aren't to comfy but you don't notice because of the action. Security is at its best but personal security is a must as well. The registration process is easy and comfortable.

  • Adrian Jonson

The stadium could do with some updating. It’s looking a little sad and the seating is all over the place. Great crowd and atmosphere though, with most local games being well attended. Parking is a major problem as well.

  • Grant Mc Dougall (Greatest Tour Ever)

It's all about the Western Provence spirit. Wonderful to sit with the crowd and enjoy the energy generated by amazing teams and absolutely fantastic fans. Will always recommend this to any lover of sports and events

  • Verity E. Cupido

I love this place, when there is big matches you can feel the proud South Africans all together. It's a feeling you can't describe only when your are there you experience the feeling. Parking is just limited.

  • Grant Insley

The atmosphere at Newlands is always electric. Some of the most passionate supporters you will find anywhere. Sometime I wish the team would play with the same passion. They seem to lose the passion at times.

  • Lee Richardson

You are always close to the field in this stadium. And it’s always full so the atmosphere is incredible. Don’t sit too high up on the lower stands because your view will be obstructed by the stand above..!

  • Kay Adonis

First time going and I enjoyed the experience. The vibe in the stadium was great, toilets were clean and it only took a few minutes to get in with visible directions making finding your seat a breeze.

  • Laszlo Nolan

It was my first time at the rugby stadium. I liked it alot. The seat were reasonably comfortable. Security up to scratch and sufficient food and drink stands/stalls. Would definitely go back again.

Great Stadium. Unfortunately the game was poorly supported stormers vs sunwolves. Did not deter from a great atmosphere. Good security. Cud offer more on refreshment and food side. Great location.

  • Arnard Venter

We walked around the place. Unfortunately you can't go in anymore. Sadly, it is very run down and there is a place where you can look through and see most of the stands but it is a sad sight.

  • Mansoor Narker

Iconic Newlands Rugby Stadium. Always a fantastic atmosphere with some epic matches . Today a legend , Chester Williams, state funeral was held on its hallowed turf. RIP CHESTER WILLIAMS

  • Nico Louw

Beautiful stadium and amazing GEES! A must for all travellers to experience! Currie cup or super rugby, always filled with amazing people from all over the world having a great time.

  • Brett Redelinghuys

Great history but the stadium is tired and badly set up. When busy to get a drink it feels like a cow being sent to slaughter. Still great for viewing the game but needs some work.

  • Ben Locke

Glad I went for the last international game. The stadium itself does need of an overhaul, general faculties are dated and not up to spec compared to other stadiums I have been to.

  • rob southey

Seats very close to the field which is great but probably best that the stadium is at the end of its life span.facilitiea are poor and not meeting modern day safety requirements.

  • Aubrey Tapiwa “Tiger” Ndisengei

Fantastic stadium, awesome atmosphere, beautiful people. First time watching the Stormers play at home, especially because we were playing the Crusaders. Had an outstanding day!

  • Naz Alexander

Erf 153664, Boundary Rd, Newlands. Watched many a rugby match here. So many memories and sad to think that there will be no more matches played here. Truly a bygone era …

  • Andre Greeff

Great atmosphere surounded by picturesque scenery of Cape Towns table mountain. Strict security ensures a safe and civil visit. Great crowds contribute to a vivid experience.

  • Derick Briers

Last ever International Rugby test at Newlands was won by England 25 -10 against the Springboks. Sad day to see this era coming to an end. But the experience was phenomenal.

  • Willem Myburgh

Newlands Rugby Stadium has a fantastic vibe and definitely a enjoyable experience watching rugby with passionate fans! Make sure to go early as parking can be a problem.

  • Joshua Bond-sanders

AMAZING EXPERIENCE AND AMAZING PRICES. TICKET WAS £10 AND BEER WAS CHEAP. DIDN'T BOOK EITHER WE JUST ROCKED UP AN HOUR BEFORE THE GAME AND GOT GREAT SEATS. LOVED IT

  • Roy Demas

Always a great atmosphere visiting. Pity WP Rugby Union is moving to Cpt Stadium. I wonder if we will have the same atmosphere. Great game. Pity The Stormers lost.

  • Creche Turner

Securities are totally useless when it comes to direction and assistance. First time there and I was completely lost. Other than that, the atmosphere is amazing.

  • Esethu Sobhekwa

The atmosphere was electrifying. Only thing I didn't like was security failing to control the croud, people did what they wanted and sat wherever they wanted.

  • Kilo Bravo

A wonderful day at the ageing Newlands stadium to watch the Boks take on England. Just a pity that much of the seating is exposed to the elements (rain).

  • Vanessa Scanlen

Just felt so nostalgic to drive past Newlands Rugby Stadium. Have so many amazing memories. Please tell us what you are planning to do with the stadium

  • Thamsanqa Zantsi

Great atmosphere. Parking on game day is a nightmare to find around the stadium and it’s expensive so it’s best use a taxi hailing service like Uber.

  • Robbie Cameron

Wonderful atmosphere at an institution of a stadium. Bit too old to be a world class stadium now but still a wonderful atmosphere, come on Stormers!

  • Allan Sheppard

Sad to say..not good. Ticket buying system terribly slow. Tickets for standard match over priced. Stadium set outand feel very cramped.

  • Lucie Bartlett

Stormers home ground. Fantastic atmosphere. But standing area doesn't allow drinks outside the bar and no screens inside the bar so...

  • Ross Grootendorst

Fantastic, just absolutely fantastic atmosphere. The oldest rugby stadium still in use in South Africa and possibly world wide?

  • THOMAS RAYMOND

What game. Stormers beat Jaguares. Pity stadium was so empty, but don't worry, Ill be there as much as possible. GO STOOORMEERS

  • Jeff Arizon

Not wheel chair friendly. You sit far from field even if you are 2 rows away from field. Toilets is old and not enough.

  • EdWillDoIt

Newlands, what can I say. Every Province/ Cape based Bok supporter has to experience it at least once. Love going here.

  • Cobus Ackermann
