"Horrible experience"
"Nope, absolutely not"
"I have to be honest with this one"
"The only reason I gave this one star was cuz I couldn't give it no stars"
Considering part of town that this grocery is located in, they probably should be called but not so safe way. However, the staff are pleasant and humble and they have basic necessities and prevent us from being in a complete food desert in the local neighborhood. Prices are a little higher than I think they should be. If the food is relatively fresh and most things are clean and reasonable considering me terrible location that they're in, I do appreciate them remaining on site there and not closing like Mr. Marsh did because without Safeway we would really be in a bind during periods of no vehicle. That leaves us getting on the bus to haul heavy groceries from the store to the bus stop from the bus to our house on the east side. If you decide to roll the proverbial safety dice and venture to Safeway, pay attention, go during daylight and arm yourself. The gang activity, murders homicides and robberies in this police district are outrageous and I wish I had a solution for that. But other than the blight around the grocery store, Safeway is holding their own .
Horrible experience. I stopped in to buy some meat on my way home. I noticed the ribs were like odd color and smells, then I realized most were dated 9/17& 9/19/2016. Asked the meat department about it he said all the meat was fresh and he just put it out today. Seriously? It was 9/23/2016, so some was over 5 days expired. I also snapped numerous pictures of the meats. Then I took a closer look & some had no date of packaged or expiration dates. The meat department totally lied. So I figured no ribs then I will grill burgers & chicken. Nope expired meat again. What is going on with this store? So after searching 10 minutes found 3 packages dated from the rack he(meat department) brought onto the floor, packaged on 9/22/2016, reminds you the day I was there was 9/23/2016.After telling the meat department & the cashier my concerns about their meats, why are you guys selling expired product & meat without dates at all? A consumer dosen't know how long before the meats go bad if its no dates. The responses on this "well the dates are incorrect" Seriously?
Nope, absolutely not. When I walked in the door immediately upon walking pass the carts, it literally smelled like ROAD KILL! I was looking where I stepped cause I just knew it was a dead dog or skunk in a isle somewhere. There's 2 letters that explains what I was thinking,,,, P.U. I got 3 words for you ,,, Board of Health I wanna make a report cause with the way this store smells, how do I really know if it's ground Chuck or rolled over duck, , sea bass or cat az, chicken or fish or squirrel?? I couldn't imagine getting meat from here, if it smells that bad in the pack, can you imagine how it smells in a pan? I started laughing cause I didn't know rather to vomit, or try to make it to my car. I just couldn't believe that store smells that horrible.
I have to be honest with this one...I was very shocked to discover most prices at this store are not one,not two, but are shockingly three times more than other area stores. Second, and even more disappointing, the selections are not healthy food choices. We could not find many low sodium, low fat, nor sugar free options. It was actually super disappointing, not just for my own personal tastes but because as a local, I know the area is truly a grocery desert. So, that means locals face higher prices with less quality food choices. I know prices are up but, not 3x! I left and drove to Aldi where I bought the same items for much less!
The only reason I gave this one star was cuz I couldn't give it no stars. Horrible's store smelt incredibly bad like Rotting Flesh. The cashier had jerry-rigged some sort of system between three credit card machines but none of them seem to work stood in line for 26 minutes manager didn't like the cashier so he wouldn't do much to help nor would he bring you buy out of his register. Poorly stocked the security guard standing there agreed with me he wouldn't shop there himself. Best thing to Board of Health could do was close this place down before it gets make somebody sick.
So me my niece my beautiful baby daughter who is 2 years old was in Safeway last night and I really came up there just to see somebody that works there when I finally did see the person I was looking for and waiting on they showed up so it really felt good to see them there Safeway is an okay store I really don't shop with this story of me my fiance and our beautiful baby daughter wish up at the Kroger in Ohio cuz that's where we live but we right now are residing here in Indiana I'm so tired of being an Indiana I'm ready to go back to Ohio already I've been ready
One of our depended upon neighborhood fixtures Safeway on East 16th is a throwback to simpler times when you could go to a clean place, close to home, and actually be able to feed yourself and or family without the headache, hassle, and huge overhead attached to the buying experience of most food markets nowadays. Safeway here and the Sherman Drive location have both been immensely reliable food sources to the neighborhoods they serve for decades as we hope they continue to be for decades to come. Thank you Safeway!
I gave this store a 3, because sometimes it smells. However, I understand due to the fresh meat being prepared. I don't do full grocery shopping here, because the "regular" stuff is so high in prices. What I do like about shopping here is the variety of fresh meat and fish, along with it being smaller store to get in and out! Thanks for doing what you do and hopefully some of these reviews that aren't down right nasty (although, this is their experience) will inspire any necessary changes moving forward. Blessings
This is a grocery store, not a super market. Carries many national brands and quite a large amount of store brands or regional brands. Limited produce selection (don't expect anything more exotic than bananas). I was told by neighborhood association leadership that store has new management. It is very convenient to my house when I don't want to make a Kroger run. Reasonable choice for getting staples. Small meat department. Carries a very limited beer and wine selection.
It's clean, but even their discounted items are still really expensive which is a joke......they need to teach their employees about rotating the stocked items....i have bought some expired items from them and didn't realize it till I got home....their fruit selection isnt the best, fruit tends to be bruised or overripe, if u need one or two quick items it's your store to go but if your grocery shopping your better going to a kroger or walmart etc
Generally over priced and under stocked. This chain used to represent higher quality and service, but it seems now that bare bones and corner cutting is their recipe to maximum profits. Most staff members are pleasant and friendly but don't go out of their way to help you. The store is fairly clean however it's gloomy ambience makes it appear less so. I rarely shop at this store, and when I do it's for a few quick items.
Overall, the store is fine. I don't always love all the prices. Some of them are high. Their meat prices are pretty good depending on the meat you want. I do not like the overall smell of the meat as you first walked through the doors. But other than that the store appears and kept. Too bad our stores do not look as fancy as the Safeways I've gone to in other cities in other states.
I love this store. Everyone is so helpful and so nice. It's very earthy and it blesses our neighborhood and it's just a pleasure. They have a great selection of fresh meats and old style Cannery of beans and things that I used to get when I lived in Alabama. Best store in Indianapolis. The cashiers are wonderful and the people that come in the neighborhood they are so so awesome
Sometimes large items on a pallet are blocking the aisle so you can't get down them with a cart. You have to turn around and go back the way you came which I think is inconvenient. Also the items for purchase are priced differently than the price in the computer so it is rung up higher than expected. The star rating is mainly because the employees are very friendly and helpful.
This place is horrible there is a Caucasian older lady with glasses and she said a racial slur to me and got upset when I started to get loud with her she also lied and didn’t allow to me to pay for my items and I had no choice but to leave I normally always shop there but now have lost my business and any person of color should be cautious attending this horrid business
I love this sweet little store. Have been going there for years. I stopped going to Kroger on 10th and Shadeland because they had one cashier and a 100 foot line of people so the wait was at least 45 minutes. Safeway has more cashiers and you are in and out of there quickly. I am so glad that store is still there. I hope it never closes.
Poor customer service. I was in there with my wife trying to check out with one item no one was at the regesters no one greeted us and we waited 5 mins for someone to come help us and no one did so we layed the item down amd went to the dollar store across the street for what we needed. And the store smells really bad like rotten fish.
Nasty the store at 25 an Sherman got bad meat out someone tht use 2 work there said tht bad meat they soak it in salt water. 2 bring back color. The store at 16 00 n.Emerson has meat setting out uncover with flyies around in room an lady in same room doing other stuff not covering meat. Lots meat uncover an 1 person working back there
I really don't like this place. I've been to several locations, and all are the same. Food over priced, not really a great selection to choose from. This is a store that was put in urban neighborhoods to provide them with the bare minimum food Supply at double the cost. Safeway get two thumbs down from me.
This place is great for the neighborhood. Selection of items is smaller than other places. Prices are higher. Most meats are bulk packaged. I wanted 1 pound of hamburger ( on more then one occasion). No one seems to know if they even carry it. I can usually get in and out quickly.
Didn't find what I was looking for, the meat department was disgusting...dried blood on the shelves and chicken visibly rotten. Prices were ridiculously overpriced. It's a shame the way they hike the prices in that low income neighborhood. I'll stick to Walmart, Kroger or Meijer.
Most of the "fresh"produce was past its prime. The store is small so there isn't as much selection as a larger store, which means brands with higher sodium, fat content and unhealthy choices. Prices were also higher than typically at Kroger. The staff was very nice though.
Safeway Grocery store is probably one of the only few stores that still have meat available. I was able to get hamburger ( frozen in the roll), chicken, ribs, roast, fish etc. However, I wasn't able to get eggs. But that seems to be everywhere. Good looking out Safeway!!
This is known to our family as the stinky store. As soon as you walk in the door a horrible smell hits u...GROSS!!! The people that work there seem so nice every time I go in there, though. They are very helpful, IF they have what you are looking for.....
Nice place, but it's got a fairly limited inventory and has somewhat higher prices than nearby competitors. Produce area had a number of veggies and fruits that were going bad, but the deli and meats departments were reasonably nice. Too much white bread!
Very expensive on condiments. This store banks on people using foodstamps because if you're spending cash $100 barely gets you a cart of groceries. I'm sticking to Aldi or Kroger at least you see a discount when you use your Kroger plus card
Poor selection of brands, produce is less than fresh, and there is always an ofacious odor coming from the meat counter. Check out is quick but not friendly. Prices are high, the most scary part is this establishment is still in business
I have never smelled a odor and have shopped there for many years . They are friendly and make a point to address you when entering the store . I go there for certain meats ,and soda (faygo) of course their fried chicken and hot foods .
Safeway Grocery is the perfect store to go to find meats, grocery, and sauces that you get can't find anywhere else. Safeway is my kind of store! If you're handicap like myself, they make sure you have the help you need.
Their meat is terrible and their prices are too high it's not like what they used to be they used to be a fine store:the store has greatly emproved the meat looks great the store is clean an the employees are friendly
Convenient neighborhood market. U might find things missing elsewhere. In-house sliced Bacon is excellent, nice and normally pretty thick, DELICIOUS THEIR SMOKED MEATS ARE VERY FLAVORFUL …
Great neighborhood store. Can get in and out quickly. Cashiers friendly and everyone who works there is helpful. Been shopping there since it was Prestons' in the 70s. The store is in great shape today.
I called on the phone and asked for deli and the lady answered the phone rudely. My grandpa asked if they were making hot wings today and they lady said no I’m not making those today, in a rude manner.
They’re prices are high, but I go here often because it’s convenient for some of my “quick” grabs. I wish they would add more to their meat selection because over the years it’s been majority pork.
Decent for a corner market in the 'hood. However that is all it is. Limited on lots of items and if you're trying to have your family eat healthy, I'd definitely recommend Kroger over this place.
we love this store and the location great employees.Have a great variety of fagyo soda then anyone. If you haven't shopped their you must check them out .Their deli is great and nice meat choices.
This is one of Indy’s best kept secrets when it comes to buying meat. The prices will make you drive from another county they are so good! Don’t buy anything else in there, it’s way too high!!
This is my place to shop the prices are good just doors are clean the salesperson's are very helpful and prompt and usually there is not a long line to stay at DIA so I rate them excellent
Went there for two things and they were out of both. Also they are expensive. Don’t buy butter here it’s way cheaper at Walmart. They also have Zero organic milk choices.
This is also my favorite store I love Preston Safeway because I love the quality of their meat I don't do it if I can goods but I love the high quality meats fast service
Every time I go there looking for cultural ingredients and foods, I'm never disappointed! I even find snacks that I would never see in your traditional markets.
Nice manager nice cashier but milk was super high. Only one choice for milk too. Been there long enough getting money from customers so upgrade store....
Was able to find what i wanted but that store stinks so damn bad you can smell it in the parking lot. Smells like the old 7/11 stored used to. Just rank
This particular Safeway is extremely clean. I have been to this location 3 times and impressed every time! Employees are super helpful and friendly.
Store is always organized and very easy to find what I'm looking for. Never have to wait forever to check out either. Employees are kind as well.
There's been some fixing up at this store. It was much brighter and more straightened up. A better shopping experience because of these changes.
So they don't except $20 bill of there not made after 1995. Because they choose not to get the equipment to tell if bills are fake or not
They never have fried chicken. Don't even think about getting some on Sunday. Go to Kessler or Illinois. Just not good customer service
Took a friend there, I was going to pickup something from the deli. Disappointed it was closed, it was not 6:15pm, maybe next time.
Although the store could be cleaner, they seem to have a variety of grocery items. Their meat selection is very good for a safeway.
Love Safeway! Been there a long time! People are friendly and helpful! I like that about a neighbors store! I’ll be back!
Great place for meat a lot of variety. An all different types of links . There good . I'm a fan of the hot links myself.
Small store and a lot of generic brands. High prices on most items. Numerous items with no pricing on the shelf.
A very good place to go if you need to drop in for food are hot chicken for lunch or dinner or other things.
It's a good lil story it's a lil bit in price but you don't have to walk a mile in it good for us handicap
Like stepping into a Piggly Wiggly in the early 80's, seriously doubt they could pass a health inspection.
Extremely over priced for not very good quality. Clean store terrible prices and selection.
They have good choices and lots of brands to choose from. Meat section is very good also.
Really awful grocery. All processed food and sugar drinks. Stunned, no seltzer waters!
Laura was super nice and made sure I got everything I needed in a timely manner
Employees at front-end very rude n slow.great service in hot food area
Very convenient. Clean. Enjoy shopping there. Keep up the good work
It's was a different name on the store and did respected people.
This seems like the only place I can find those Scott Peterson's
It smells horrible as if the meat is spoiled in this store.
Great products and the cashier get you out pretty quick.
Always friendly family feel in there love this store
Good staff but kind of pricey on some items
People don't know how fresh there meet is
