I’m unsure if the staff has changed since all of these below positive reviews, but unless it’s friends of the staff, that is the only other reason why I can think this place has a high rating. My sister is being transferred from this facility (thank GOD) mainly due to the staff’s incompetence. I will say **not EVERY doctor and nurse, but Select Specialty Phoenix definitely has some bad seeds within their facility**. My sister was improving so much more when she was in the ICU before her move to Select Specialty Phoenix. Since getting there, it seems as though every other day she was faced with a new problem without her original health issue being fixed or at least being informed what was causing it. With being there almost a month and being told “We don’t know. We are running more tests” over and over, with little to no communication from the staff, you start to question if some of the nurses and doctors onsite are actually qualified or just interns. We designated ONE person from our family to call instead of bombarding them with multiple people calling, and that one person calls ONCE if not TWICE a day just to have an update on my sister. If we get an update, it’s the same thing “we don’t know” or us being told of a new issue that she’s developed since being at Select Specialty Phoenix. If we don’t get an update, its “the nurse will call you back” and then no call back. I understand maybe not feeling a personal connection with the patients because at the end of the day, they are a stranger to you. So when you nurses and doctors (again not all the nurses and doctors but a good chunk of them) at this specific place get to go home to your families at the end of your shift, that “stranger” is MY family. MY family I’m waiting days, weeks.. to have home healthy but have barely any update on when that’ll be. We’ve stayed patient.. we gave your staff the benefit of the doubt.. we remained calm and crossed our fingers. The incompetence, lack of both any form of sympathy whatsoever and any concrete information on what’s causing my sisters ORIGINAL ISSUE/what is being done to fix it, rude tone of voice from some of the staff, my family and I had enough. On a side note with my sister being in the actual facility, when she was able to work up the strength to text (which wasn’t often due to her being so sick) she had let us know she was informed to use her call light if she needed to use the restroom.. but when she would use it, they would not respond in a timely manner which resulted in.. well.. you can probably paint the rest of the picture of what happened and what my sister had to sit in until they picked up their feet and came to help her. She felt humiliated, thanks guys! I do not recommend Select Specialty Phoenix to anyone for any type of health care. If your friend or family member is needing a legitimate place to recover and you want them to be in the best hands without having to second guess that or worry.. if you want to have 100% full confidence in the entire staff not just a few of them, do yourself a favor and do not bring them to Select Specialty Phoenix. I am so disappointed.

I'm a Nurse Manager and have been a nurse for a long time. I was very nervous and skeptical about having to admit my son to Long Term Acute Care Facility after receiving amazing care in ICU. The staff definitely has changed my perspective on LTAC here at this facility. When I was told that my son was transferring to LTAC, I had so much anxiety because I knew the care would change from the ICU setting. As a health care provider, it is really scary to see your loved one suffer and be on the other side as a patient. I can't give enough praises to all the staff that provided care for my son here. All multidisciplinary teams worked together in managing his condition. RT, PT/OT, ST, care managers, but the nursing team had my heart (I might be little biased ). There were some that was lot more laid back (lazy) as I was doing all the care for my son, but for the most part, everyone was so helpful and there were few that really stood out. Karen (CNA), this lady, I can't say enough great things about her!! As long as she has been a CNA, she still remains compassionate and it really shows. She has proved to me over and over again that she continues to do this because she is passionate about what she does and how she provides care. She was very meticulous about how she took she took care of him. She treated my son as if he was her own child/grandchild. I spent most of all my days with him since he was there, witnessed Karen interacting with other patients. She was always so polite, kind, patient, and simply loving. I always knew when she was working before I even saw her because I would walk into a clean, tidy room and my son always smelled clean. I was trying to hard to recruit her!! This facility is lucky to have such an amazing CNA! Brian (CNA), he just really knew how to interact with my son once he started speaking and knew how to redirect him when he was getting agitated. When I couldn't redirect him, Brian always knew how. I would say from my son's perspective, Brian was his favorite. He also was compassionate and treated my son with respect and kindness. Abby (CNA)- very similar to Karen and Brian, very kind, compassionate, caring, and patient! She even came to check on us on break when she wasn't assigned to him to make sure we were okay. I'm excited that she is in school for nursing! CNAs are the heart of nursing and these 3 were just EXCEPTIONAL!!!! Nurses were fantastic too! Jay, Melissa, Greg, and Alvin stands out the most. There are others, but I can't recall all the names. RTs were all fantastic!! I can't recall all their names. Paul and Mike were the last 2 RTs who worked with my son and they are great!! I would recommend this facility to anyone who is in need of Long Term Care. Because of all their wonderful care, my son was off of the ventilator before leaving the facility. I'm forever grateful!!! The staff here are fantastic and really care for their patients as if they were their own family. I highly recommend!!!!!

I am giving 1 star because I have to in order to leave a review. My mom was transferred here April 10th, she was finally transferred out of this place on May 31st. There were a few days where we honestly didn't think she would make it out of there alive. She had suddenly developed dementia per her attending MD. The psychiatric nurse practitioner called it delusions. We really didn't know if this was permanent or if she would return to her normal mental state and no one could us. The first time we started making arrangements to transfer mom to a SNF for rehab therapy days before the transfer she developed a GI bleed. On Mother's Day her pulmonologist called to get consent to put her back on a ventilator and put a trach in. At this time she was due to transfer out to a SNF for rehab later that week. The pulmonologist told me that without a trach there is no way she can transfer, and by the way she also has pneumonia. The third time she was ready to discharge the day before the transfer day I was called and told they "forgot" she has a feeding tube and needs to have surgery to place it in her side. The day of surgery was delayed a day because they forgot to check her chart and see that she has an allergy that requires pre medication. This place has no discharge planning coordination. On at least two occassions when we went to visit her she was trying to yell for help. On four occassions while we were visiting her bed pads were soiled with human waste and we went and had to ask for assistance several times. On three occassions the call button was could not be located (once it was under her bed and twice it was tied up on the wall behind all of her monitors).... this is a bed ridden patient and during part of the stay had a trach so had no voice. When we asked for a bed pan it took 20 minutes for someone to show up. There was a note left for me from occupational therapy on her white board to bring good moisturizer for her skin and another note for me to clean my mother up. I live 2 hours away, so a phone call in advance would have been nice. I spent $150 in hygiene products and a manicure kit, dry shampoo and an electric razor. Gave mom a massage and manicure for a few hours. Left the items with a note to feel free to use them on her when I am not there. She discharged 6 days later and none of those items transferred with her. Her samsung galaxy 9 note is also missing. We still have the charger, hopefully they do the honorable thing and replace her phone. The communication to the family was horrible. I called daily for updates, but it was useless. The care they provided was just horrible. I can go on, but that's enough.

I don’t understand why this place doesn’t have more reviews. My father was transferred here from Barrow Neurological Institute after an 8 day stay in the neuro ICU after brain surgery. Unfortunately it was the only option since he needed more respiratory support. The unit it run-down, chaotic, and despite the busy hallways with people constantly walking back and forth; patient care is severely lacking and you barely see the nurse or tech. For the 3 weeks my dad was under Select’s care, his teeth were brushed by a member of the team only ONCE!! Every other day my family members had to wash his face, hands, and brush his teeth. Come to find out that due to the breathing treatments he had every 4 hours, someone should have brushed his teeth each time, but that DID NOT happen despite asking. The only time it was done was after asking the respiratory therapist, Barry, but even then he was arguing saying it’s the tech’s job or anybody can do it. It took him at least a half hour to finally do the job!! Toileting was also a MAJOR issue. It took at least 20-30 mins after pushing the call light for someone to come in and help my dad with the bathroom. Unacceptable!! By that time it was too late. Oftentimes the call light was pushed but someone out at the desk turns it off without ever sending anyone in and the process starts over. Nurses and techs do not listen to physician orders as well. My dad was supposed to sit in a chair at least twice a day and several days that was not even done once. When personally asking the nurse to help with this task, she said she needs to “wait for the tech” or made up an excuse why it could not be done. Even went as far as saying “he doesn’t want to,” which I know is NOT the case! Nobody cleaned his PEG feeding tube site which should have been done EVERY DAY. The care at Select was so appalling I would never return to this facility and highly DO NOT recommend it to anyone. It’s pretty bad that you have to be at the hospital every day almost 24/7 to make sure your loved one is getting proper care or attempting to care for them yourself. Barry the respiratory therapist and Erin RN were the most disappointing and worst care takers. However Sierra, LaToya, and Karen all RNs actually did their jobs, were polite, helpful, and caring. They explained medications, plan of care, and tended to their patients. The only positive comment about this place is that the housekeeping staff cleaned everyday and were polite.

My husband was a patient at Select Specialty Hospital – Phoenix, an acute care hospital. He was cared for there for four weeks from mid-December 2020 to mid-January this year. He was extremely ill when he was admitted to Select Specialty and most sadly was not able to recover from the numerous medical events and challenges sustained at a previous hospital and subsequently at Select. But during those last four weeks of his life, I believe he was given the utmost care and compassion from the Select Specialty staff, particularly the nursing staff. It must be noted how significant this was as the Covid-19 pandemic was overtaxing hospital staffs everywhere. My husband did not have the Covid virus but because of its severity and prevalence in Arizona hospitals, I was not allowed to visit him at all during those four weeks. I was able to make three video calls. Other than that, I had to rely on getting information from occasional calls from his doctors, but primarily from the daily calls our son and I could make to his nurses. Each nurse would very kindly answer my questions about his condition and would agree to convey to my husband my daily messages of love and concern. It was less than an Ideal situation, but it appeared to me that everyone I spoke with genuinely cared about both my husband and for me. I have the names of many of the nurses who were there to offer their caring and expertise. I prefer to keep their names private as I did not ask permission to use them. I believe they know who they are, and I hope by writing these comments it is one way to make certain they are each made aware of my thanks. I do need to offer special gratitude and love to the three members of the nursing staff who were with my husband as he took his last breath on this earth. I will be eternally grateful that he did not have to die alone.

I want to thank all the nurses , staff. After my daughter Katherine Scott came out of I C U From suffering from flu type A . When Dr Jullian Called my grandchildren and said that their Mom and my daughter Katherine Scott may not make it through the night. When She was transferred up to Select I KNEW she would and was a handful but I got to hand it to the Nurses CNA's and all Staff that took care of her. You guys did awesome And I want to thank you all very very much. There were times when her brain didn't function and I know she was mean and very vocal to some of the staff. But you folks handle it very professionally . And the sitters that sat in there with her I give them a 10. One Particularly named " Adrian " was awesome and a very caring individual with her. I want to thank everybody very very much for the understanding and dealing with a patient that at the time was having brain malfunctioning. Doctor Julian you are such a doctor of faith and I'm very blessed to have you on Katherine recovering. She was discharged from Estrella rehab center 5 days after Showing great signs of memory and walking.. you all saved my daugter. Hugs to each of you all.

I am a physician and have not had a very high opinion of LTACHs (long-term, acute-care hospitals). My wife had a long ventilator run at another hospital after a severe illness and was unable to wean from the ventilator. They suggested moving her to Select Specialty Hospital of Phoenix at St. Joseph's Hospital, and I was very reluctant. I did a tour and was very impressed by the staff and the facility, so I agreed to the transfer. Select lived up to their commitment, and had my wife weaned from the ventilator in under 2 weeks. Despite being in an older building, the facility is kept very clean and odor-free. I was most impressed with the staff. Every staff person we met, from janitor to nurses, to nurses' aides, respiratory therapists, and medical staff, were exceptionally nice, pleasant, caring, friendly, and thoughtful. Even when doing the most heinous tasks, they were pleasant and respectful. That meant the most to me and my wife. I would highly recommend this facility should the need arise for anyone's loved one, and would not hesitate to use it again if I ever had to. It has changed my attitude towards LTACHs (at least this one!!).

I was transferred here from a trauma because I was involved in a motor vehicle accident in June of 2021. I suffered a a broken neck, broken skull, broken rib and a broken pelvis. I also had a TBI. From what I recall, there were to RN''s on the night shift that were extremally rude. Given my medical situation and the medication I was given, I tended to be loud when I needed assistance. I remember the male nurse telling me that he served in the Air Force in a medical unit and used his GI money to become an RN. The other nurse was a brunette female. When I needed assistance, I had to yell because my hands were tied at the wrist to the sides of the bed. Instead of checking in on me to see what I needed, they just yelled at me to "SHUT UP". My spouse was not happy with the way I was treated even when she was present in the room. She found a rehab center to get me out of there as soon as possible. If I could give negative stars, I would, This place needs to be inspected by the board of health during all shifts with a no notice inspection and have their license revoked.

My dad had open heart surgery on 12/30 and suffered a major stroke during surgery. We were transferred to Select on 1/16 and within a month my dad was trying to communicate, standing, and taking sips of water. All the things the neurologist said he would never be able to do again. Select Speciality Hospital has provided my family and I with encouragement, hope and never showed a doubt in recovery for my dad. Angelina CNA would take extra time out of her day and randomly do some type of PT with my dad and I believe she is the reason he is where he is at today. Along with the PT staff Rosa, Carly, ST/OT Genice/ Kayley, Dr. Ahmed, CNA's Brian, Sam, Mercy, Delores, Karen, RN Edna, Dolly, Jaime, Kristy, RT Trish. They all had some type of special impact on my dads recovery and went above and beyond in different ways. All the staff here truly care about their patients and the strides they make everyday, we could not be more thankful for Select Speciality Staff.

My husband had a serious medical issue with an extensive hospital stay. He was medically stable but unable to come home and needed additional respiratory support to wean him off a tracheostomy tube. After meeting with Ryan Colby (COO) and touring the facility, I knew this was where Bob needed to be. Within days I saw significant changes in his physical and emotional health. Every member of their medical team genuinely likes their job and their patients. They get to know the patients and their family members on a personal level, allowing them to provide optimal and compassionate care at a high level. While there are too many to mention, a few of the staff who impacted our lives during Bob’s three week stay are: Ryan, Annette, Nancy, Jami, Jen, Jeremy, Greg, Jaime, Grace, Val, Brea , Cody, Roger, Daniel, Dr. Buckner and Dr. Raza. Without you he wouldn’t be home. So grateful -

Awesome.staff ...husband came here for Ventilator weaning. So many favorites...he is Navajo and they even have a Navajo CN Val that checked in every day to speak Navajo. Very comforting... Love them all Niza and of course Jeremy always ready with a smile. Professional and experienced. Cant thank them enough. Can't leave out Ryan CEO who makes sure running smoothly and is very visable. Our story did not end well. Keep an eye at all times . RNs consistent a few scary CNAs. And couple of Respiratory did not seem to understand to take him off ventilator after 6 hours. Kept leaving him on for 12 because busy. He ended up with severe scarring from ventilator and passed away 2 months after going there. There are alot of excellent people there but they are understaffed and exhausted. Keep an eye on your loved ones and ask questions.

  • Lee Cole

The worst medical facility I have ever seen. The place is filthy, they don't even bathe the patients. At one point a portable toilet/chair was actually overflowing. The staff is extremely hostile, to patients and family members. One of the nurses actually punched my daughter (a patient) in the nose. My daughter was recovering from surgery at St. Joe's to remove a tumor. After being in Select Specialty Hospital for a month (they said they would have her out in 8 days) she weighed 70 pounds. She's 36 years old! They also performed surgery to put in a feeding tube, even though she refused to sign the consent form. And they didn't want to sign a medical release so we could get her out of that pit. DO NOT make the same mistake our family made. Stay away from this place!!

Jeremy has been critical in my recovery as well as the staff at select Jeremy has made my stay amazing. Moreover, the entire staff has been amazing. They are miracle workers. I was on the verge of death and suffered paralysis; now I’m on my feet again and moving to Barrow’s for rehab. I couldn’t have done it without Select and their staff. Rosa and PT have been amazing, and I’ll miss them, especially Sophia, Chandler, and Carley. CNA Brian, Alexis, Dolores, Maryann, Karen Ford, Sabrina, and Adrianne all have been so great and patient. They know their stuff. Respiratory therapists Mike Hernandez and Lydia have been wonderful. Hope, CNA Bri and PT Brianna have been amazing as well. Night RN’s Cameron and Hillary have been great as well.

Jeremy Dickson is the most warm hearted, compassionate person Jim & I have had the privilege to meet. His competency and integrity were outstandingly securing when confronted with the horrific situation my husband was experiencing as a patient,. Jeremy ‘s compassionate understanding provided each of us with the emotional support we required to adjust to the reality of our situation and move beyond hopeless to instead, experiencing hope and restoration of the possibilities still ahead in our lives. Because of Jeremy, and the wonderful medical staff we recently chose to return Jim to Select Specifically Hospital for their skilled expertise to remove his Tracheae tube recently installed in our local hospital two hours away from Select.

What my family appreciated the most about Select was the hospital's patient advocacy program. During her stay, our Mom had good and bad interactions with the staff (to be expected during stroke recovery) but we were given the resources we needed to reach nurse team leaders, her therapists, and hospital administration who were helpful in getting us the answers and guidance we needed. A big complaint among our family was the ongoing construction - noisy and uncomfortable, causing some issues. In the next few months I'd suggest to anyone to ask for clarity about the ongoing improvements schedule. That said, I imagine it will be an ideal place for patients and their rehabilitation when it's complete.

  • D. Sanchez

Pros & Cons you have CNA by the name of barton works nights thats terrifies my father by having his breathing tube pop out his neck while being tucked in bed cause, his words> (Im on a time limit). Than you have another night worker by the name of Kathleen (karen) she is respiratory that complains about her job and her feet hurting and no explanation to my father while being Treated while he is sleeping just suction his throat without warning. There is also cocky Michael another respiratory idiot less talking micheal no one cares about your love life and complaints of other coworkers. Hope more people like me speak up since our family members cant speak do to a respiratory trach in there throat.

  • T Martinez

This place is horrible 3rd floor patients have to share rooms and it takes the staff a long time to come to the patients that have hit the call button my mom shared a room with a patient that kicked her legs and had her feces smeared everywhere they tooked exactly 20mins to come in and see she had an bm I just about gagged no one should have to endure these conditions my mom got no rest I stayed with her around the clock I was afraid to leave her they stuff these patients in small rooms with only a curtain to seperate their space i wouldnt recommend you leave your loved one alone especially at night the staff are loud and in inconsiderate!! Beware of this place!!!

  • Sal Edwards

I’m retired from having spent over 25 years in the medical field. A friend of mine was here and I was impressed with the quality of care she received. All staff members were compassionate in providing excellent patient care. The response time to her call light was reasonable given the staffing ratios. I was equally impressed with the smooth transition from and to St. Joes Hospital when needed. As a pet lover, Thank you for allowing pets to visit. I’m a firm believer they help in the emotional healing of patients. I fully endorse Select Specialty Hospital - Phoenix!! Respectfully, Sal

  • Brittney Garcia

I wouldn't give this place not even 1/2 a star. By far the worse place you could send a loved one. Nurses take forever when call button is pressed. One of my mother's nurses had the audacity to tell me my mother was the worst patient she ever had & bugs them too much. They had her sit in a wheelchair with feces for 2 hours. Refused to give her water & crackers between meals. I was on the phone with her while she asked a nurse for her food & the nurse told her "I'll feed myself before I serve you" The list can go on & on. Patients are there to be cared for not be treated badly!

  • Herbert Petty

My wife was at Select Specialty Hospital in Phoenix inside of SJH. They took excellent care of my wife. The staff was very supportive and caring. The doctors did a very good job in explaining my wife's care in terms that I could understand. When it was time for discharge it was a seamless transition from Select to the next facility. In terms of the recovery pathway road to health, Select is an asset. I would recommend to anyone needing their care to utilize this hospital. On a scale of one to ten they are a twelve in my eyes .

  • Lavinia Poenar

I’m not one to do review... but this is one well deserved, so before I begin I just want to say thank you!... Thank you to the staff and wonderful care team that this facility has, in the 6 months we were there, we were always greeted with a hug and smile, the staff was always on top with keeping us informed of any procedures that were happening. They went above and beyond expectations for caring for my father. We will always consider this place a second home and our family.

  • CJ Town

My mom is currently in Select Specialty and she has been treated with genuine kindness, compassion and professionalism by all staff and administration. She has had a rough road of recovery but her nurses have been so attentive and the RT's have been wonderful at answering our questions throughout her many challenges. While we regret our mom has needed to be a patient, it has been a relief to see the competency and high level of care for her!

  • Jeffery Alexander

I was transferred into Select from Honors Hospital. I was suffering from COVID and GBS. I received very good care. I couldn't walk, situp or anything that required using muscles. The PTs there got me out of my bed and got me to walk a few steps. Thank you to Jeremy for getting me into EnCompass Valley of the sun. I am now walking on my own without the need of a walker. Thank you to Jeremy and the cna's and nurses, and especially my Dr.

  • Ioan Poenar

As a previous Select patient, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Select and the staff. A very special thanks to Brett Albillar who took me outside for the first time, when I doubted I would ever be able to, you encouraged me, and I looked forward to it every week. You have all been a blessing and I’m so grateful to have been in your care. May God bless you all. And I look forward to visiting everyone ....with donuts.

  • Herb Petty

My wife had an excellent experience at the Select specialty rehab Hospital on Thomas road next to St. Joseph hospital. This is her second time being there. They saved her life twice along with the great surgeons at St Joseph hospital. I highly recommend this facility if you want great care. I've noticed other hospitals send their critical ill patients to to Select Hospital via helicopter daily. IMPRESSIVE.....

  • Bruce Cairns

The people actually providing the care are excellent even if stretched thin. Especially Karen, Jeremy, and Justin. The nurses are a mixed bag. Most are good, some are rude. Doctor Buckner, our treating physician was very good. The cardiologist was arrogant and dismissive, but what else is new. The administrators were insufferable bullies. I can't overstate how awful they are. The discharge lady was top notch.

  • Taylor Hayes

My dad was here for three weeks after being in the icu with covid, he had a trach and peg. After three weeks of being here he was decannulated, eating food, was able to walk with a walker. This hospital has done a wonderful job getting him back to normal. Special shout out to Jeremy for taking amazing care of him and forming a great relationship!!!! Thank you so much for the awesome care!

  • Emanuel Turner

The third floor Rehabilitation Ward entire staff and doctors have been excellent in the care of my brother who is recovering from cardiac arrest. They have been attentive and committed in their endeavors to help him achieve full health and recovery. In my opinion I think they do an outstanding job with my family member and other patients in the Ward.

  • Susan Chaco

I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at St Joseph's Select. My husband is being treated for head trauma and I know he isn't always easy to deal with. NA Jeremy, Adrian and Rosemarie never tire of his constant questions/requests. The nurses and therapists are compassionate toward my husband. It's comforting to know he is taken care of.

  • Randall Rowe

I just spent over 3 weeks at this facility. There are always a few problems that were fixed quickly. The staff was great, friendly, and helpful. The nursing and CNA staff made me comfortable. There are too many to mention about how much I appreciate them. The wound care was excellent. The Doctors are professional and helpful.

  • Janette Politzki

This was a great experience for my husband's recovery from West Nile Virus, ensufilitis, and meningitis. He had wonderful and caring nurses, PT staff were exceptional. It is because of the PT staff that he was able to move on to his next therapy. We want to give everyone here a huge thank you for all you have done for us.

  • Christine Berta

I'm very pleased and happy that my uncle was cared for by RN and CNAs Nurses were informative and educated in regards to my uncle's care. Select hospital is in need of face lift however, the quality of care super exceeds the way facility looks. I I would highly recommend I'm select hospital to friends and family.

  • Robert Jordan

I had a phenomenal experience with the entire staff. They cared and provided excellent care during my three week stay. Five stars. The COO Ryan Colby is a very capable executive that sets some very good standards for his staff. A big thanks to all the people that made my three weeks a success.

  • Karen Nimmons

I was a patient at Select hospital on two separate occasions for several months. I received excellent care and support. Recently I visited the floor where I was cared for to visit the staff who took such excellent care of me. The hospital can use a face lift but I wasn't concerned about that.

Horrible. Would give one star If I could, im not sure WHO they end up hiring for these roles but they need a revaluation on who's hiring who. Recruiters are mediocre and clueless.
