My partner had a cup of Clam Chowder with a grilled crust (toast) and 2 pc Cod & Fries. I had 3 pc Fish n chips with slaw. Both dinners included lemon wedges and tartar sauce. There were plenty of clams in the creamy chowder. My partner has eaten a lot of chowder to compare this to. He says it is fresh and the best he has had in quite a long time. He didn't even add salt, which he always does. Not that it was salty; it just didn't need it. The Cod pieces were 2 inches thick, steamy, flaky, fresh & moist. The light batter was thick and crisp, not saugy. Superior to fish we've enjoyed from other places that boast about being the best in the Pacific Northwest. The slaw was not of a creamy variety and not overpowering with vinegar or seasoning, just fresh with flavor. 6 o'clock on a Friday night at Hawthorne Asylum was full of hungry people, but seating was available without a hassle. Staff at Tall Boy were friendly, even in the frenzy of the dinner rush. Only a 20 minute wait which we didn't mind. I'm not sure what it is like around there when it is raining, seems to be enough coverage to stay dry while eating. Had to park 2 blocks away and walking was well lighted. Traffic lights and crosswalks at every corner made us feel safer than some venues where you cross lanes of traffic at your own risk. Hope to return soon to try some of the other varied menus of the other food carts there.

Was hired after applying online and worked a full prep shift. During that time the owner refused to wear a mask. He was the only one in the Asylum who did so - there is a mandate as I type this. The only time he acknowledged we were in a pandemic was to tell me a story about how homeless people are making thousands of dollars a month getting vaccines over and over. To make matters worse I didn't see him wash his hands once, even after leaving the cart and opening doors and drinking coffee and handling cash. After all this, the raw slaw veg was not rinsed in any way. He frequently mentioned worry about the health department cracking down on him, and lamented about how all his staff basically bailed at once. After this intro day I sent an email saying that if he wasn't going to be wearing a mask I was going to keep looking for work. There's no point in arguing and I'd seen enough. He then ghosted and still has not paid me for my shift. Maybe skip this one: you don't want seafood from a guy who takes food safety regulations as food safety suggestions.
This is the best fish and chips I have ever had. They have the perfect crisp-to-fish ratio. The fillets tend to be relatively thin which makes for a nice crispy piece of fish. Fried zucchini has the same awesome batter, nice, crispy and well seasoned. The cole slaw is unique and delicious. It gives some welcomed and necessary freshness to the meal. The clam chowder is really good too. Instead of letting the clam meat cook in the chowder and get all chewy, they put clam juice in the chowder to give it nice clam flavor then add clam meat on top that is relatively tender. This is the way to make clam chowder. It is so good. The fries are crispy and well seasoned. I just love this place and used to eat here all the time at PSU. Gonna have to make a visit sometime soon.
Ordered on their website (NOT a third party site) two days in advance, received email confirmation of order. Showed up on time, they said "Let me get back to you", 15 minutes later they said they had no record of the order, even as I showed them my phone proving there was a fully paid order. Why didn't they tell me that from the start? Had to wait another 15 minutes after that to get my order. Were I the owner or manager, I'd offer up a free extra to make it up. Nothing. No apologies. Food was good, but next time I'll hold off on tipping until I pick up the order, will tip accordingly if they do that again.

Looked around the asylum for something new. Fresh chowder and fries sounded good. Clams are supposed to be locally sourced and from WA. Right from the get go, the chowder was missing salt. It's was bland and the sourness from the lemon was overpowering. The consistency was thick but not rich. Maybe xanthan gum as a thickening agent. Ordered a regular size of fries. I haven't received a more disappointing order of fries from any food location. Yes #1 in that department. The included sliver of bread that came with the chowder was great.

Best fried fish on the west coast. No hyperbole I worked at one of the highest rated chippies in New England back in the ‘80s. The cod and chips I had from Tall Boy was the best I’ve ever had. Perfect batter. Perfect cook on the fish. The fries held up underneath. A decent tartar on the side. Fish and chips does not get better than that Want a true UK experience? Get your Tall Boy meal, head out the side exit of the Asylum, down the block to Away Days and order a pint of Bus Stop bitter. You’ll be living the life they could only pretend to on Ted Lasso

This was just okay. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get this again. Only got the clam chowder and it was lacking flavor surprisingly enough. The toppings were pretty decent but overall it was not the best. Took a few minutes to get noticed to even order which kinda ruined the experience. I feel like if the food pods focused on serving people instead of acting like it’s an inconvenience to take orders it would thrive more, this was not a popular option at the pods and I can understand why.

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST FISH AND CHIPS IN PORTLAND!!! Are you looking for perfectly seasoned and battered fish? Hoping the fries are crunchy and delicious? Wishing the tartar sauce is tasty AF?! Look no further! I was introduced to this fantastic food cart today, and I know I will be back OFTEN. It's worth a drive from the west side... And I mean deep west side (Beaverton). The staff couldn't have been nicer, the portion couldn't have filled me up more perfectly... And the jalapeño Lemonade was incredibly refreshing. DEFINITELY give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.
This fish is so good I can’t even pace myself... we’ve only gotten to-go orders, and within 7 minutes of delivery they’re already gone, and I’m left craving more. I should put them on auto delivery each week haha! Great quality fish (I get the gluten free)- not at all fishy. Sauce is amazing. Chips are just okay because they’re kinda soggy, and I like crispy (wish they had sweet potato fries, though I know that’s not the norm). I also wish they had more sides... the coleslaw is the smallest size on the planet but is the only other option besides potato.
Great fish and chips here, freshly fried and very crispy. I really enjoyed the clam chowder and little piece of bread that it came with. They have several options of fish for the fish and chips which rotate depending on their supply and the current fishing season. I got the pacific cod. I would definitely eat here again as it was a great warm meal for a cold night and I would get it again.

omg absolutely perfect fish and chips!!! i have had two perfect fish & chip experiences of my life. this (tall boy fish & chips and seafood) cart at the asylum- near cartopia also, was one of those top 2 experiences in my life with fish & chips. fish = perfect batter = perfect fries = perfect so go go go !!!!!!! you will be very happy that you did my only regret was not seeing that they made clam chowder and i did not try it with my meal. i have high hopes though that it will also be amazing.
Best fish and chips I have ever had. Better than the fish and chips I ate in England which, according to my friends who live there, was "the best fish and chips in England". Hard to describe how absolutely delicious this place is. We live nearby and this cart is now #1 on our list to take friends & family that visit. Also, you HAVE to get the jalapeño lemonade - pairs perfectly. Doesn't hurt that everyone who works here is incredibly nice.
The Food is to die for, hot, fresh and deliciously prepared. Wait times are fair b UT totally worth it and you must try the jalapeño Lemmonade, its the best drink in the world

Such a yummy fish and chips shop!! If you’re gluten free - the cod is amazing! (They do use a shared fryer for the fish so not celiac safe) but the fries!!!! Oh man!!! The Fries are celiac safe - they have their own fryer and are delectable!! The staff are incredibly sweet and hospitable! This place couldn’t have exceeded our expectations any more. If I lived here in Portland I would be eating here happily very regularly.
Took a while to get the food but it was well worth the wait. The fish was fresh, got and tasty. As with most fried food you should eat it right after you get it so it's hot and crispy. The process were good and the food great. I would recommend. A++

Flavor was great, they lose a star because when I ordered I was told 5 minutes, actual wait time was over 20 minutes. My wife's food was cold by the time I got mine. Also they need to have Tobasco on hand.

I've always stated that since moving here over 10 years ago, from B.C, I've only got one favorite fish n chips joint, now I have 2. This review is for the fresh halibut fish and chips and it definitely is up there with fresh halibut fish 'n chips that I had in Anchorage, AS. Yeah, it's pricey, but it's worth it! The fries are ok, but the halibut is where it's at.
This place seems to be open for just a few hours every day and there is now way to check their hours. I stopped by 2 days in a raw hoping to get some fish and chips and both times they were closed. You guys should definitely update you business hours or at least, put a note on your truck so customers won’t waste they time driving to see a closed food truck.
$5 - Cod Slider* was near perfect. A hot mess to eat, but the cod was incredibly tender & a hefty, filling, little chunk. All the other ingredients complimented it well. $8 - ½lb Steamed Manila Clams. Hard to describe as my dad ate the little bucket in less than 2 minutes. I assume it was delicious. Cook was also friendly. Great food truck.
Fresh, in-house baked bread, tender clams, non-mayo coleslaw, perfection! This was not my first visit, nor will it be my last. The picture says it all!

The best fish and chips I've had for awhile. I had the Alaskan Halibut. It was very tender and the seasoning was perfect. The fries were exceptional. Skin on fries with perfect salt. The only thing I didn't care for was the coleslaw. I'm pretty picky about coleslaw. I would highly recommend this cart. Ask for what fish is the freshest.
We visited Tall Boy Fish & Chips on a Sunday night near closing. We ordered the two piece fish plate and cup of clam chowder. It was absolutely delicious! Perfectly seasoned and the right temperature. Plus, they checked on us half way through our meal to make sure we were happy. Thank you Tall Boy! We’ll be back.
I waited 45 minutes for fish and chips. I understand they were cooking my food to order, but it doesn’t take 45 minutes to get fish and chips. And if it does, these guys should let you know you’re going to be waiting that long. I certainly would’ve gone somewhere else and come back when I had that kind of time.
The (2 fresh thin sliced) Jalapeño Lemonade, Lg. was delicious, refreshing and had just the best aftertaste of capsaicin at the time for me, it was perfect on a hot sunny day.

I was telling my friend about how this is the best fish and chips I've had in years, but upon trying to recall what restaurant did it better, I arrived at the conclusion that this is actually hands down the best fish and chips I've ever had. 10/10.
Delicious gluten-free breading option available, fresh and moist fish, bright and clean slaw to lighten up that fried food feeling, good fries, and delish milk-free tartar sauce. Perfect.

Awesome Gluten Free Fish & Chips made with rice flour! Fries are skinny and well seasoned. The staff was amazing and remade our food when our beeper didn't go off cause we were to far away in the car. Please go support …
Tucked back against the best tables with overhead heaters and rain shields, music playing overhead. I love the vibe here. Came for what has already been called out: FRESH Pacific seafood! No complaints. Just delicious.
The guy working here was really cool! The food is absolutely amazing come here and try everyone ! He definitely deserves fat tips for the awesome food and great customer service!Thank you so much! Worth every penny!!!
The fish was excellent. I only wish there was malt vinegar with it. The lemonade started out great, but by the bottom of the cup, the jalapeño became a bit much.

Steamed Clams-Half Pound
Had a 3-piece fish and chips. One of the pieces was pretty good, the other 2 over-cooked. And I was disappointed that the chips were frozen commercial fries rather than fresh-cut. So just OK in the end.
My husband and I enjoyed the fish/chips and clams sooo much ! Fish was fresh and delicious! The owners were so kind and friendly! I highly recommend going here to satisfy your fish and chips cravings.
A small seafood restaurant on Rubik. Not bad sea reptiles. The portions are not very large and after the pandemic the assortment has significantly decreased and the menu has changed. You can visit.
Extremely overpriced for the smallest, tiniest portion of food. Just felt cheated and still hungry afterwards, the littlest bit of fish I did eat was very delicious.

Might be my favorite food cart in the Asylum food truck pod. The seafood is always fresh. The halibut was flavorful and crispy. Fries and tatar sauce are the cherry on top
The best fish and chips I've had since moving here 4 years ago, it's the whole package. Great batter, generous portions of high quality fish, and an amazing dipping sauce.
Hands down the best service we've ever had. These folks went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. One of the best parts of our trip to Portland.
