Summary: If study is your thing and you are a top student, UNSW can provide a lot of pathways and facilities to put your skills to good practice and build a portfolio with. If you're going to need help to learn your degree, and also want at the same time to maintain a healthy and sociable life outside study, forget it. I would regard UNSW as mainly a pathway for the dedicated, not a learning place for everyone. ---------------------------- Trimesters Cons: - Trimester system handles some degrees well, some terribly. If you are in a built environment degree, heavy amounts of work will be crammed due to content that can't be effectively segmented in short periods of time. - Much shorter holidays and less frequent holidays. Holidays don't line up with people from other unis. Pros: - Benefit UNSW's appeal to overseas systems, attracting students who have to pay at least 3x as much money per course I know lots of people who have changed unis due to trimesters, or don't want to change but regret choosing UNSW due to trimesters. Trimesters are simply a heavy net negative for students. ----------------------------------- Studying You will notice that the vast majority of positive reviews focus on the campus, whilst the vast majority of negative focus on the study experience. You think about what role uni plays for you, and consider the priority for your 3+ years. After 3 years in the uni in 2 different degrees/faculties, it is my opinion that the university falls extremely short of teaching expectations considering its "prestige". Tutors are too hit-or-miss to be able to rely on for help, and UNSW will most likely be too neglectful of your concerns to help you get over them, so it's really on you. The uni does have access to a lot of resources and also provides good facilities that you can use to practice your skills. Degrees are also structured with courses that are good for producing work which you can directly include in a portfolio to prove these skills, making good students all the more employable. Many degrees also offer exposure to career industries. --------------------------------- Opinion on UNSW as a business It seems highly likely that UNSW's high-quality student output is a combination of high-standard students as well as resources to help them excel; but teaching and communication is definitely not in that mix. UNSW is on a path towards building reputation based on catering for overseas students and the highest achievers for profit, not a path of leading young generations into a more educated future. Ironic considering it has "NSW" in the name. My opinion on UNSW is poor because it's my belief that schools should strive to help the collective, not individuals. Schools teach. Teaching is leading. Good leaders don't fixate their attention to only the biggest players in the team.

Modern university that has been undergoing some sort of construction or renovation of it's facilities non-stop over the past 30 years. No cars allowed to drive through campus anymore (actually, not since around 20 years) - only a couple of entry points and cars must be parked in the car park facilities located nearest to these entrances. Visitors used to the convenience of driving inside Asian and North American university campuses might find this a bit off-putting, though the campus isn't that large. Short-term parking is exorbitantly expensive, so either purchase an annual pass or park in one of the side streets nearby - however, some streets only allow 1 hour parking on weekdays so students and staff may want to consider parking further away or catching a bus to campus. Whether you are a student, staff or visitor, expect to do a lot of walking. The walk up the steep hill to the upper campus is a killer, but you'll get fit doing so! You'll need to be fit to manage the walk between the upper and lower campuses in the 10-minute breaks allocated between classes. Food on campus is way overpriced though students get a 10% discount. All food outlets close very early though (like rarely will anything be open after about 3pm) and almost nothing is open on weekends (though this may have changed since). However, since there are a ton of restaurants along nearby Anzac Parade, there is too much competition for on campus food outlets to be open longer than lunch time. Teaching style is pretty much rote style and based on memorization, which is the teaching style the majority cohort of students, who are mostly from China, India and South-East Asia are used to. Subjects are heavily exam based, especially in math and sciences/engineering. Many subjects take 70% of the grade from final exams, so if you flunk your finals, you'll fail your course. This is the polar opposite of American universities, where final exams only contribute perhaps 20% of your final grade. Extra credit is unheard of here and the professors/lecturers are harsh. In many ways you don't feel like you are in Australia, but rather in Hong Kong or Singapore, when you are a student here.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW; branded as UNSW Sydney) is an Australian public university with its largest campus in the Sydney suburb of Kensington. Established in 1949, UNSW is a research university, ranked 44th in the world in the 2021 QS World University Rankings and 67th in the world in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. UNSW is one of the founding members of the Group of Eight, a coalition of Australian research-intensive universities, and of Universitas 21, a global network of research universities. It has international exchange and research partnerships with over 200 universities around the world. The university comprises seven faculties, through which it offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The main campus is in the Sydney suburb of Kensington, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from the Sydney CBD. The creative arts faculty, UNSW Art & Design, is located in Paddington, and subcampuses are located in the Sydney CBD as well as several other suburbs, including Randwick and Coogee. Research stations are located throughout the state of New South Wales. The university's second largest campus, known as UNSW Canberra at ADFA (formerly known as UNSW at ADFA), abbreviated to UNSW Canberra, is situated in Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). ADFA is the military academy of the Australian Defence Force, and UNSW Camberra is the only national academic institution with a defence focus.

In my humble opinion, much WORSE than both UTS and University of Sydney (I have attended three universities in Sydney). Lecturer explained a search algorithm to 400+ students by saying "you go go go, then you back" without teaching aids or visuals. It is barely even English language in construct! Some other faculty informed me verbally before I'd applied that CSP allocations and subsequently award are highly probable, but months later asked to "apply again" and submit through some system (including Application FEE of course), only to award full-fee place. I cannot believe a uni asked for $100 from you, so they can accept and ask you to please pay more. I have also worked on a project at UNSW, and a permanent staff had told me that the uni is run by maybe a very homogeneous group of folks at the top who cares about driving profits, perhaps less so about providing quality education. The one thing UNSW is very good at is marketing. I remember winning some award for a maths competition overseas when I was between 7-10 y.o. and the award was presented by then the Minister for Education. A lot of impressionistic bias get to my head early in my life! Do not forget to question why "Google Local Guides" below are saying positive things about the university. Perform more thorough a research. This would be a good start for demonstrating ones' academic/intellectual curiousity, instead of getting spoon-fed a degree :)

Dropped it. Although I enjoyed learning here and the societies and arc are friendly and always try to make it easier for students to make friends. The humanities subjects are interesting and yes UNSW is very orientated towards new technologies (even fine arts) Not a fan of the trimesters which make the teachers and students produce more quantity in a shorter amount of time and was said to encourage more international students to come for the university's profit. Even the term dates now correlate more with say Chinese terms Otherwise I lived my exchange experience and UNSW offers exchange to almost everywhere I think and if you do a science degree related to Antarctica, you can go there too!! Edit: a professor would "trick" students into writing a one-sided report by teaching from only one perspective. Then after the marks were given, he'd reveal the other perspective with might've seemed like an obvious side to the argument but because students wanted to trust their professor the students didn't write about it. The professor just wanted to make it seem to the board that he was teaching the students a lot of content. Apparently he's pretty well know in his field too. Playing tricks definitely helped him.

did you think the days of piracy were over? well... they aren't INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, these guys want your money bad and they will give you as little as possible in exchange for it. (I got nothing). I intended to study a graduate certificate. Only when I paid the enrolment fees, 4000 DOLLARS, they disclosed the availability of the modules that comprised the certificate. All the modules that I intended to study were full so I thought I would get a refund... Guess what... they STOLE my 4000 dollars and offer no compensation for it. (I asked them to offer me other courses such as public speaking…) it is important to note that they only disclose the module availability when they get the hand in your wallet, prior to that there is NO INFORMATION/WARNING. As an indication of how BAD this institution is just try to contact them... The student support is horrible, long wait times and unqualified people. Again, if you are an internal student don't waste your money here. This institution gets good ratings just because relative to other institutions in this country it is better: "In the world of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."

Be warned: If you are an Indian / Hindu student: This university supports Hinduphobic content. My review is in relation to the International Cultural Studies teachings delivered by Mina Roces. As an undergraduate student, I and thousands of young impressionable students were subjected to Hinduphobic commentary and content through the distorted and malicious lectures of Roces. Such commentary involved remarking that the God Rama - and by extension - Hinduism - was a mysoginist, and presented Hindu holy men as if they were sadists. The religion was presented through various ways as demonic. I raise this to the attention of the university, its academic council and the Dean. Despite attempting to raise this directly to the university, (complaint no. 1171). The request I raised to the universities attention was glossed over. Until such academics are held to account, your Hindu students - and large Indian diaspora) are subjected to destructive, malicious content.

The moment you step into this place, you get the sense and feels of it being an innovative place. A place with a stunning main walkway with different school buildings either side of it The campus is divided into lower and upper campus and access to all parts of the campus is fairly easy. A very reputed college in Australia, with it being 6th in the Group of Eight Universities in Australia. Great connectivity to the city , with light rails available at both ends of the campus and frequent buses all around. Friendly people, friendly staff, overall a friendly vibe. A tad bit heavy on your pockets, but the effects of that heavy cost models are seen in the infrastructure, the facilities and the level of teaching. Both coursework and research is highly recommended The only thing off according to me might be the Trimesters that have been started. This adds unnecessary load and tensions on the students. Overall A really good university.

A great university with a high global ranking, modern facilities, and the latest technology. Tools and software that are used by real workers and companies are introduced to students from early on so they know how to use them. UNSW is good for its practical courses that prepare students well for joining the workforce when they leave. They seem to be pretty progressive and aren't afraid to change things up to improve the student experience (although whether some of their decisions eg. Trimesters are actually good is controversial among students). UNSW is a bit further from the city centre than other universities in Sydney, so it could take longer for some students to commute there. But I like the relative peace and quiet of the suburbs around UNSW compared to the busy, crowded city centre.

It's better to spend your money somewhere else instead of this Uni. The School fees are ridiculous compare to what you gonna receive/gain in return. Unprofessional staffs are everywhere, you could even meet some racist staffs or students, not a friendly place to study and it's a boring campus. Too many international students especially from China and Indonesia makes you feel like you are not in Australia, they are renting and staying nearby as well so don't be surprise to see Asians dominance around the campus, and it would be better off if you could speak Indonesian and Chinese cause there are heaps of offers in those language unless you're living somewhere else and just come to the campus for studying. Beaches and the natural environment in Australia is not that nice as well.

  • Ruse DeLaRaison

UNSW is not a great student experience. It is built on a hill -- lots of stairs and not a very attractive campus; terrible for bikes. Surrounding area is either the Randwick Racecourse or ugly old low-density residential. Not very interesting, no nearby pubs or cafes. Public transport is terrible; basically only irregular/unreliable buses and forget about it if you need a bus later at night (after say 7.30pm); be prepared to wait half an hour. Food on offer is average, good stuff down the lower campus near the IGA. Most of the students are spoiled kids from the suburbs living with mummy and daddy. University of Sydney is much better. Staff and teaching/research facilities are pretty good however.

  • Lay

University is perfect but thought I would meet international students and get international experience before I came here. Now this place is like biggest china town in Australia. The only language I hear in all of my classes is Chinese except from lecturer. It’s very hard for me to make friends. I'm doing Master. During tutorial classes, some Chinese tutors walk to Chinese students tables and TEACH IN CHINESE !!!!!! University lecturer and university demonstrator do not understand 9 out of 10 tables are all chinese students and how frustrating it is for other students to learn in Mandarin speaking class rooms Career center even don't care about your career. All they think is about MONEY!!!

I was trying to visit the Centre For Eye Health (CFEH) off Barker St. Thanks to Covid parking was quite easily found after a bit of a search, but in normal times you won't be so lucky. The campus is huge, so if you want to avoid long distance walking you better know where to park close to your destination. The campus itself is spacious with lots of garden areas such as the quad and the top one near Matthew's building. Canteen were unfortunately closed when I visited about 4pm after the appointment. I feel like the campus tries its best to accommodate for everyone but when it's hard to find free parking hard to give it 5 stars, unfair as it is haha.

Going to UNSW is the best decision I have ever made. The university has major impact on who I am and the way I think and do towards success. You will get to have a value network of all smart and hard working fellows who carry in them loads of potentials, talents, confidence - who motivate you to be a better, more rounded person. I am very proud being part of the university - didn't like climbing the stairs that much when I was doing my course but other than that, the students, the teachers, the campus, the student clubs and sports centre, the facility if I have missed anything else, are of world class standard.

  • Nathan Edwards (natrad)

Studied Aeronautical Engineering here for 2 years. Facilities are fantastic, however the teaching structure and lecturers were sub-par for a university of this prestige. In my last year of studies, many of my lecturers struggled to compose a sentence in english that could be comprehended by most English speaking students. It's disappointing that an Australian University can't even provide local students a fair chance at learning the content that they are paying for. I moved to Sydney University, and although facilities are not up to UNSW's, the lecturers and subject structures are far better.

The University of Sydney (USYD), also known as Sydney University,[5] or informally Sydney Uni, is a public research university located in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1850, it is the oldest university in Australia and is one of the country's six sandstone universities. It was one of the first universities in the world to admit students solely on academic merit, and opened their doors to women on the same basis as men.[6] The university comprises eight academic faculties and university schools, through which it offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.

  • Joe Claire

This school treats study abroad/exchange students really poorly. International students are locked into the classes that they signed up for a week before the classes even begin. How does it make any sense to be forced to take a class before I have even seen the syllabus? They give regular students a few weeks to change their course schedules with no penalty. Because of this policy, I ended up taking classes that taught material I already knew and this entire term was a waste of time. I would not recommend UNSW to anyone.

  • Dr. WH Tan

Spent 3.5 years for my doctoral degree here. The university offers a really conducive environment for studying and researching. There are many restaurants nearby to hang out with your friends, most notably around Anzac Parade. I really love how quick and helpful the staff in this university is in resolving problems encountered by the students. This is undoubtedly the best studying experience I have had in my entire life.

Sydney, capital of New South Wales and one of Australia's largest cities, is best known for its harbourfront Sydney Opera House, with a distinctive sail-like design. Massive Darling Harbour and the smaller Circular Quay port are hubs of waterside life, with the arched Harbour Bridge and esteemed Royal Botanic Garden nearby. Sydney Tower’s outdoor platform, the Skywalk, offers 360-degree views of the city and suburbs.

  • Matt Irwin

- Great, all-inclusive, forward-thinking campus culture, without the stuffiness of other Sydney universities. - Excellent college accommodation, particularly Shalom College. - Friendly and helpful staff, great teaching and research opportunities. - Many opportunities to get involved and give back to the university. - Graduates ride off the well-deserved, widely-respected brand both here in Australia and overseas.

  • Jim Lea

I obtained my PhD, Masters and Bachelor of Engineering (1995) from UNSW. I have learnt many practical and relevant skills during my studies at UNSW. The skills were immediately applicable when I joined the workforce in Jan 1996. I have many memorable memories at UNSW. I consider UNSW as one of the best universities in the world and highly recommend this university to potential overseas and local students.

  • Nam Chuong Pham

Spending two years at UNSW has really grown me out of my comfort zone. The most challenging here is to manage time for the heavy coursework load and make friends. The uni should really put more effort into improve international students life since we are usually isolated and the fact is that the gap of culture is really huge in Australia. In addition, UNSW should really improve quality of teaching.

  • Regan Mooney

The facilities are modern (albeit many stairs!) and the staff I came across are knowledgeable, experienced, professional and friendly. The social life of the university is great. It can be a little tricky to get to via public transport (train to Central and a bus or light rail up Anzac Pde), but there is definitely free street parking available (and a carpark if you are willing to pay for parking).

  • Victor Hugo Morales

University of New South Wales is a great university where you can find hundreds of undergraduate curse. I will study there if I pass in a test which I will do in February. Furthermore, in this university you can meet a lot of people and make new friends while you study. Besides, This university is very close to the beach, what means that you can live close to the university and the beach. pefect

  • Exploreyourworld Highgate67

Over priced for the service you receive , untrained staff , subject outline snot updated with current dates , spelling mistakes, unfriendly staff, there are better options than studying at UNSW, lecturers do not reply my emails, please do not study in this university, when you get trapped please dont say wish i went for other university. or why was i not told that the service was really bad

  • Alex Suchy

Completed my bachelors degree here in the Engineering faculty. It was a great experience, many of my lecturers were world experts. The equipment we used were top of the range and the University grounds are also quite nice. The prestige associated with going to a top university enabled me to secure a graduate position with a top Australian company. A top choice for engineering students.

  • Sachin Kulkarni

You feel like you are in some kind of a maze, till you reach the desired destination. Fun fact: One of the persons joining us for a play at the science theater has been working with UNSW for over 8 years, BUT even that person had difficulty locating it The students on campus and even librarian had no idea where it is. However, once you find, its a nice, cozy and clean place.

  • Dayann Ogaz

I'm a student of the Foundations Studies program and I find that it is a very quick paced course that varies very much depending the teachers that you get to have both in tutorials as in lectures. The installations are pretty good and constantly being updated which is very nice to have. I hope university offers better academic experience than the foundations program.

  • Vicky Huang

Horrible University. They cancel their courses a week before the trimester starts without notifying students. And then took ages to response student’s emails and phone calls came up with no solutions. Waste our time and money, can’t finish our degree on time. If you just come to study in this university because of its fame, it’s totally not worthy!

  • Kevin Nguyen

Decent university with good facilities. One of the top universities in New South Wales! It's a shame that transport here sucks. Should get better eventually with the new light rail. Worth checking it out as a higher education provider. Pro tip - get rid of your gym membership because the stairs will give you the best calf workout known to mankind

  • ABDUL WAJID SAHIB

UNSW has a unique focus on the scientific, technological and professional disciplines. It offers an extensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs. A perfect place for student to boost up their career. And Infrastructure Is Quiet Good .. The faculties Are Very Intelligent to provide Good Education to us...........

  • Antonia Xu

Really REALLY good university in terms of quality of academics and students, but the university administration is very slow to respond to the feedback of its students. Very evident in lack of study spaces, how the university dealt with communicating the transition to trimesters, etc. but still loved my education there.

  • Hossein Salehi

A large and beautiful campus that you always feel safe, welcomed, and respected. The graduate research school (GRS) was really helpful and supportive during the pandemic and travel restrictions. I could start my program on campus with their support, and they refunded my mandatory two-week quarantine fees.

  • Jonathan R.

UNSW Online is a joke. The student advisors all seem to be absent-minded teenage girls who don't reply to emails or return calls as promised. After a colleague shared some of the UNSW Online course materials for his Post Grad certificate with me, I think I dodged a bullet by not enrolling here.

  • [redacted]

Nice campus for a tight location, decent facilities and a hit and miss staff. Its become the new China town with their international acceptance rates going 1500+ every term. Try playing spot the non-Asian; while you're waiting in the extremely long queues for public transport to the city.

  • Salah Alqaisi

This campus is lovely and contains everything that the student wants. Banks, restaurants, gym, walking areas, relaxing areas, modern library and car parks there. This one of the best universities in the world especially in mining studies, computer science and medical sciences.

  • Dave-oh

This school is making ludicrous amounts of money from its huge numbers of international students, and they have the nerve to call their alumni asking for donations. Feigning interests in what they are currently doing as a form of back entry to ask for money is low.

  • Thaís Pedrete Vilela

UNSW looks like a very modern university and it is very beautiful inside. It is very focused on technology and is very well ranked in the top world best universities. It is situated in Kensington, a bit far from the city but it is a very nice and accessible suburb.

  • A P

Just remember this. Beyond the slick marketing and emotive advertising, you are just a number. You are not treated liked a human being, only a drop in their ocean of thousands of students. They do not care about people, only about the dollar value over your head.

  • Peter Kam Fai Cheung

My younger son checked in Fig Tree Hall of UNSW on February 17, 2018. What I have observed is that UNSW people share one common trait ie they are all very hospitable to help the freshman settling in. I am so pleased that my son will be in their great company!

  • Elijah

They've done an alright job recovering the university energy after covid restrictions were liften. There are many amazing hardworking intelligent people. But unfortunately, the University generally puts profits far above educational outcomes.

  • Matt Matt

Never park here! They will fine you even if your late to your car by 30 seconds and the car park is empty. They try and squeeze every dollar out of anyone they can. There is no need to fine people when the carpark has spaces available or if

Food is delicious! Quadrangle food court has so many different things to eat. The burgers are great at the unibar. There's also the Whitehouse where there is some more fancy stuff. Even more things in upper campus that I have yet to try!

  • Chenny Chen

Campus life and student life are amazing! However location is terrible and transport there is atrocious in the mornings. Recommend every student to do afternoon or night classes - cause with the 9/10am classes you’ll be late for sure.

  • Jupiter Waskito

Not going to compare with other uni but I love the campus. Everything is within reach from in-campus accommodation where I live. The fact that UNSW is in the top 50 world ranked universities by QS should tell us something …

Nice big campus , but the trimester system is a big joke as it tightly crams a 14 week course into 10 weeks which places pressure on both Students and Teaching staff to learn/teach the content throughly causing mental strains.

Its a very good university. I have a lot of friends who study there and they always say that the classes are so good and exciting. Another good point is the classroom, which is so large. The teaches are very competent.

  • Delta Hbar

I am so thankful that I was not accepted for a role at UNSW in their finance team. Good on FWO for taking the UNSW to federal court. UNSW teaches accounting, yet doesn't have anyone there to maintain records. Flawless.

  • Patrick Huang

I spent five years studying at UNSW. It is a high level university and the only disadvantage (to me) is the low teacher-student ratio... That means professors are always busy and you're likely to engage with TAs most.

  • B. XI

Have spent two years here, and it's time to say goodbye to this lovely place. I still remember what the dean had said in the opening ceremony. We are one of the top fifty universities in the world. Thank you, UNSW.

This review is for the financial aid office. They never answer your emails and when you call you are told that someone will call you back and they never do. I have tried to sort things out for weeks with them.

Part of the Group of 8 prestige unis of Australia. Yes the entry requirements are harder and higher than other local universities but it’s simply due to higher standards here

  • Shayan Yar

One of the best universities in Australia. The campus has become even greener and more beautiful due to limited number of students visiting it under Covid situation.

Nice campus and facilities. Modern, spacious and plenty of friendly students around. Definitely worth a visit and by all means pop to the beach afterwards for a dip.

They always say a good university is based on their history, but besides this, I always think that an excellent university is based on their teachers and students.

  • Ushy Bushy

This place sucks. Disorganised mess, recycled content for numerous subjects. Subpar and unprofessional staff. I have seen daycare centres with more organisation.

  • Keith Lai

An overall a good university to study in. The Engineering faculty has several useful courses which teach highly relevant skills needed in real-world situations.

  • HenryIggy Khush

For being in the top 50 Universities of the world it is a very dead university. Boring labs, bad lecturers, shocking multi-factor security, very disappointed.
