I had my husband moved here from another hospital when he was on full life support - the hospital I moved him from were ready to pull the plug on him. Within a day of being at Toronto General (part of UHN) he started to recover and eventually made a full recovery. The care from the nursing staff was excellent in the ICU, but the residents bedside manner left a lot to be desired. Still I was so grateful to them that I decided that I wanted to work for them. I thought I would be working for an excellent organization, but I couldn't ignore the bad management. Pay is good, in some cases people are overpaid for their skill set, you can literally walk in off the street and make well over $20 a hour to clean floors or be a receptionist. Benefits are good, but hiring practices are poor here - there is so much nepotism and buddy hiring within departments. HR are not closely governing or screening who is hired and this lack of experienced and fair management results in a poor culture/morale throughout the organization. You only need to read their 'ask emma' online anonymous staff Q&A to see how poorly staff are being treated and it's not limited to anyone department. I loved both my jobs here, but I left my first job because of the toxic culture only to find that the department I transferred into was even worse; many staff were continually bullied by management and HR did nothing to fix it. High blood pressure, anxiety and fear of losing our jobs was an every day reality. Eventually all of the original staff in my department left for the sake of their health and happiness. I was really disappointed when I saw my fellow supervisors refuse to pay staff according to the law, many times they would 'negotiate' staff to working overtime at straight pay, even the managers who did know the law still didn't pay staff correctly for extra work, and just like the hiring practices, HR did nothing to oversee how staff were being paid. I you ever have health problems where you need to take more than a day or two off, their occ health staff bullied you to return to work before you're well, telling you to 'suck it up', it happened to the staff who I supervised and to me when I needed time off and disgustingly they did it to a friend who had cancer, she was bullied so much that she had to start going for chemo on her lunch break to get them off her back. This hard working woman was eventually fired after over 30 years of loyal service. This hospital doesn't practice what it preaches, too many managers who are responsible for staff don't follow policy and there is no one managing this poor treatment. However, if you can get a job where you report to a director, you will be treated far better; I worked with two CEOS, many VPs and Directors, most of whom were decent people and good people to work with. I expect a hospital to care more about the well being of its staff, but like most businesses my first hand experience is that they care most about money. I am still disgusted that their major donors rule the roost: Many of their major donors support the hospital very generously but there are often very self serving conditions attached that would shock you and aren't anything to do with enhancing patient care. We certainly have problems in our health care in Ontario and this, like many other hospitals could do a lot better with fiscal responsibility, I have seen far too much mishandling of funds that, as a tax payer, is distressing to me. If you can handle the BS, by all means get your foot in the door here and enjoy the good pay benefits for as long as you can, but remember to get out as soon as you start to become affected by the low standards, negativity and lack of support.

I can't believe people giving one star reviews for vaccine mandate. Seriously learn science. Some of my friends and family members work in The ICU and covid has been super bad, from people dying to them being overworked, and having to tell their family member this person isn't coming back because they didn't get vaccinated. Being vaccinated greatly reduces the seriousness of covid, lessens your chance of ending up in the ICU. It's. not experimental drug I met a virologist who studies vaccines who told me how it works and that it's been around for awhile they just hadn't done clinical trails on it yet. Reviews are for services and all I see is people who are who refuse to accept science. There is A TON of credible peer reviewed research on the development /history of mRNA vaccines. Clearly people don't want to educate themselves. UHN Has provided so many great services and have been super helpful towards my family who have used their hospitals.

I’ve been coming to UHN every 4 and 4 months with a family member as a translator for many years. With the vaccine mandated ended… they NOW require anyone coming in to show proof of vaccination (mine you patient doesn’t need to show vaccination) i should have been informed of this change on the phone as i called to confirm. Luckily i had a copy of my vaccination on my phone. They have never even during this pandemic asked for proof of vaccination - only now what a joke!!! In other words, if you aren’t vaccinated you cannot come in with your family members to assist them whether that is a mobility issue or language barrier.

If you're given an mri appointment, you must confirm the exact time of your mri. We got a phone call 2 days prior to our appointment and were told our appointment was at 10:30. A patient would assume this was 10:30AM, IT WAS NOT. How a hospital running 24hrs a day booking appointments make this kind of mistake, how they have not moved to a 24 hour clock is beyond belief. I am sure that this entire network is fantastic, but be aware of this. Please change this so you're not disrupting people's lives for no reason!!!!

Dealing with this health network has been an unbelievably awful experience. There is no communication whatsoever. No social support for patients. Absolutely no understanding at all that some patients live far far away. Every single extension you call has a 5 minute voice message about all the different protocols and procedures. No one tells you when appointments are, you have to call around and chase people. I feel for anyone else who has had to deal with this network.

I would like share my experience and deepest thanks for the outstanding assistance and care I had during my recent operation at Toronto General Hospital. The nurses who cared for me after my heart operation were incredibly attentive and kind, and gave me the greatest care possible. I sincerely appreciate the commitment and effort put forth by all the staff, including Nurse Asha and Nurse Practitioner Lisa. Thank you

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews. Everyone at UHN has treated me with great care and attention. You can usually get someone on the phone quite easily, or they do call back promptly. Waiting times are also minimal in every department I have visited. The UHN patient portal is a also updated as soon as test results etc. are available. Thank-you to everyone who makes this happen!

Went to the ER because I was having an allergic reaction, I had hives all over my body, face and scalp. But they passed it on as if it was nothing, all they told me to do was take benadryl, next day my eyes got swollen and I couldn't open them fully...so thank you for your incompetence staff and lack of assistance... never going there EVER again!

This place has mandated a dangerous and experimental medication which they call a vaccine to their staff or they will be fired (although it apparently doesnt give immunity or stop spread from those receiving it). What a human rights and ethics disgrace.
