Advertised as open at 7am on Saturdays, rushed here to get antibiotics for an ill animal, at 7:15 store was locked and no one answering the phone, nothing I can see on the door re: opening hours etc. Someone pulled up in a blue car with a custom/pet related numberplate and looked at the shop and drove off, not sure if that was the owner or staff or a coincidence Usually I'd say the 7am thing was a typo as every other day lists 8am, but both Google and their own website has the 7am Sat start. Edit: Owner replied saying they don't stock antibiotics, but a friend has bought triple C here (chlortetracycline, an antibiotic) under the vetafarm name. Most places stock it as part of their product line, and we were under instruction from a vet to purchase and start this immediately for a sick chick. Chick is doing well now and the needed supplies were bought elsewhere to see him through until an avian vet could see us. The reply they left to me almost implies a lack of vet care etc on my end here, which is not the case. Also, having bought aquarium supplies here before they have antibiotics for fish under the seachem and other brands. It's disingenuous for the owner to throw back a 'we are not vets we do not have this product' when they, like most other stores, do carry basic first line first aid, and some of those products are indeed antibiotic agents (others are antiparasitic, or antifungal, etc). You should always get vet help for ill animals, but sometimes that help involves starting first line treatments which are avaliable through pet shops until your appointment, as was the case here. Edit 2: And they seem to have deleted their response.

If you care at all about animals, DO NOT SHOP HERE. Please don't just dismiss this review, I'm not a vegan, I don't spend my weekends protesting KFC but I do care about the health and wellbeing of animals, especially my pets. This place is quite frankly disgusting. There is absolutely no care for animals. Fish are sick and dying in the tanks (and many just left there dead, see pictures in other reviews), reptiles are left without water for God knows how long. Their treatment of animals during grooming is atrocious and seems to leave pets scarred and distressed. They very obviously source animals from illegal operations (puppy farms and the like previously, I don't think they stock puppies anymore). The fact that this store exists as it still does without being shut down by authorities is a disgrace. The mixed reviews are because 5+ years ago this store was run significantly better. This is what happens when owners/management change to people who do not care about the business and only care about printing money. You should be ashamed of the suffering you cause to other living creatures to make a buck. What kind of a person could care so little about spending their days profiteering by selling overpriced animals that are neglected in any way possible if it can save them a penny?

0 stars if we could. A week ago we purchased 2 fish and bunch of plants for our established aquarium of 15 years. I've never had a problem with my fish due to how much effort I put into the tank.. Firstly one of the fish died within 2 days, 2 days after that white spot started to appear on some of our other fish. A week on and all 12 of our fish are dead. Some off our fish we have had for over 10 years these fish are irreplaceable and most worth around 500 dollars each, this has been a terrible experience. We called upmarket pets, this was a complete waist of time, of course as mentioned in previous reviews they just denied any accountability or compassion. I ended up just ending the call it was pointless. Meanwhile we had other pet shops get involved to try to help save the fish with no luck. This operation should be shut down, please read older reviews before you give them your money. They knowingly sell sick animals. Shameful

Even the fish at nearby Vic market are fresher than theirs. The whole business is extremely brutal to animals, customers and staff. Most snake water bowls were dry. Fish and ornaments overcrowd the tanks and they took forever to scoop out the fish for us. Decomposing dead fish piled up, fighting fish are kept in small jars without a filtration system and apparently having alga boom. I told them their turtle was stuck in the filter but they just ignored that, so caught up in blabbering “knowledge “to already annoyed customers. Despite this, I just desperately wanted to be served, pay for my item and leave. A man who claimed to be the manager kept interrupting and insulting an elder staff at counter, while two other employees just sleazily judged a female customer’s ass. Gross.

Woah. That was a visit like no other! Have been to this store numerous times. Looks alike a dump, but has a good range and staff who really know their stuff. Today however, a person who I assume is the owner (manager at the very least) deemed it appropriate to have a performance conversation with a team member right beside the cash register. Regardless of validity of such a conversation, I felt it was completely unprofessional. The phrase, "one more strike and you're out" was used. As a people manager myself, I can't imagine doing something like that to a team member, nor would I allow my customers to have the experience I just encountered. Appalling behaviour from the management in my opinio.

My dogs love coming here so much! The staff are so lovely and my dogs have come to learn that if they sit while I am getting their supplies, they get a pat and a treat! Whenever we get anywhere near here on our walks, my usually slow and ambling 15 year old starts pulling on her lead and trying to lead me towards the shop!! My other dog is 7 and usually very shy and anxious but they have been so patient with him and now he runs to get there and get his treat and pat too! I have been given great advice here and really happy with my purchases, especially kibble recommendations (I give their kibble as training treats now because they love it so much!).

Great place. Super helpful. Great variety. Totally ridiculous they're not allowed to sell the pets they used to. I have some doctor & nurse friends that would take a visit to see the pets after a particularly trying/emotional/sad shift at some of the hospitals near by. Spending time with the puppies/kittens etc seemed to take the edge off and allow them to keep at it. I tried to fill the gap with my very cool and old cat - sadly he passed to the big C recently. I've tasked them with the job of finding me another. When that day comes, my go-to guys as t UMP will be my first stop

Just one lovely lady attending the shop. That is where the good part ends. Following comments are not a staff review. They are nice to customers but proper caring for aquarium needs more manpower which I think requires a management revamp to make it happen. A good place to bring kids to educate them about pet neglect and how it looks like. Plenty of dead and injured fishes to show the consequences of lack of care. Went in having something in mind I want to purchase but walked out empty handed as I rather not support the business with such level of pet fish care.

Great store, reasonable priced items, good staff and service close to Queen Vic market. There’s always bowl filled with water for the quadrupeds with their biped owners. I love the many selection of items that your pet will surely enjoy. Special treat too if you become a member for your furry friend will get a surprise on their birthdays ( discounts etc ). The staff will also give advice on what’s on and preferred by other pet owners. Bring your furry friends and they will enjoy shopping too and free treats and pats from the staff.

I was looking for a new good quality cat tower online and travelled in to see Borzoo who I spoke to on the phone. He was very knowledgeable and couldn't help us enough with our purchases. We got the bonofido chateau cat tower the quality of this brand was exactly what we needed for our 2 queens. Highly recommend anyone to go here for any of your pets needs this store has everything and more for your fur family members desires. Thanks Borzoo and sorry we destroyed your beautiful shop window display

Bettas kept in tiny jars, no quality of life whatsoever. Inhumane treatment of fish here!!! Also overpriced. Edit: temperature controlled rooms or not- the fish are in a tiny jar with a fraction of the water they require. Even with water parameters in check these fish are under significant stress and boredom which will make them susceptible to illnesses. NOT adequate care at all, just greedy owners cramming in more fish for profit. Pitiful. Stop misleading customers who do not know any better.

I really enjoy shopping at Upmarket Pets near Vic Market! They have an excellent variety of dog treats that my furry friends absolutely love. The staff is super friendly and helpful, which makes the experience even better. However, I must mention that some of their toys and dog products are quite expensive, often nearly three times the cost of what you can find online. Despite that, I continue to visit mainly for their fantastic selection of dog treats.

Loyal customer over 5 years, its Great, I love it, my dog loves it when you shop in store, but the web store is still hopeless over years of time, there are some product still haven’t upload to website / no photo / description not match / PayPal link is not working At the end of the day, I still keep going to shop in store every month or so, would be great if you can fix the website so I don’t need to travel 1.5 hour to shop from you

  • Michael

I found these guys online and they offered the cheapest price in the area for the litter my cat needs. I called ahead to ensure there was stock, the man was polite and quickly able to confirm they had the item in. I did not see any animals there, except for their freeroaming white parrot and another beautiful green bird in a big cage. Thanks for providing the essentials at a fair price!

The aquarium is really really bad. I bought four guppy here, one male and three female. One of the female looks unhealthy and dead in the second day. The male one always scratched himself on the ground of tanker. That means he has parasites. He cannot eat anything, became thiner, a few weeks later dead. One of the last two females also looks bad now, I am so worried about her.

  • Ekeke

Rocky the dog loves coming here. Loyal customer he is. 6+ years. Jay or Rainbow both do an amazing job at pampering him with his haircuts. The staff have always been friendly to me and him. They call to give me updates on appointment cancelations and/or if any issues with Rocky. He is now ready for summer. Thank you for being such a beautiful team. :--) +luv

Aug 2022 update Operating as normal post COVID. Masks not required. QUITE A WIDE RANGE OF FISH AND AQUARIUM EQUIPMENT Bought some frogs here (you need a permit to buy / move frogs and tadpoles in Victoria) and they were very helpful. Lost of fish on sale too (for both indoor and outdoor pools) as well as water conditioning products and advice

  • Jenny Liu

The pet shop is good, the aquarium is awful, the seller’s attitude is awful, anything u ask, he will just grab for u immediately, but if u wanna have a second thoughts or chose the one (fish / plants) by ur own, he will be very unhappy in the next second said“ they are all the same!” … really bad experience. Never comeback again.

  • Jasmine Alcouffe (TheFluffyTheropod)

Great aquarium, heaps of amazing quality bettas, all that I saw were healthy. Great variety of tropical fish, definitely worth visiting. Ignore all the bad reviews, they clearly just have something against this place. I didn’t see a single dead or sick fish, and there’s definitely a great selection of supplies.

  • 戴安琪Angie

we sent our guinea pig Milo on boarding there because we had to leave Melbourne for Christmas. it's cheap (7aud/d) all the staff are super friendly and they agreed to feed him vitamin c pellets every day. he also has his own cell, hes way bigger than other baby piggies lol. (*¯︶¯*)

Excellent customer service! Twice I've been in isolation and they have been so helpful to ensure I get my order of hay for my bunnies. They have a great range of products and have given good recommendations in the past too. Great to have this store so easily accessible in the city

  • Tee

Absolutely love this store, a big thank you to Damien! Popped in for some toys for our bunny and ended up having such a lovely chat and purchased an amazing sling carrier as well!! Overall great experience, highly recommend. One of the best pet stores in Melbourne, hands down!!

  • Leslie Morgan

My posting concerns the small part of this shop where you enter a colourful doorway and go down to a shop full of fish, reptiles and the accessories associated with their care. There is no wheelchair access and the staircase is steep but if you are able it is worth a look.

  • Yu-Chi Huang

I visited the store on Sunday a month ago to buy a heater for my betta fish, but they only had the stock for 25w which was too big for my tank. The female staff suggested that the stock for 10w will come on Monday or Tuesday next week. They

  • Callum Grierson

The bettas are kept in tiny jars that leave no room for them to move let alone have their needed space, causing them unneeded stress that can result in illness and eventual death, such illnesses that will spread to your other fish! Buyers

Alyssa, the employee on ground level is incredible. She was patient, kind, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful! Alyssa is one of the only great things about upmarket pets. The products themselves are very hit and miss. The foolproof items

The pet store manager, Damian, was seemingly helpful when I ordered a cat tower. I called numerous times to confirm it and ask when it would be delivered. He always said it was on the way and not to worry. After about 2 months of waiting

  • Yi June Yap (Lev)

One of the larger pet stores with a bigger variety in the city area. The staff are friendly and approachable and you can tell they love their pets. Also their resident cockatoo was very patient and kept me company while I shopped near it.

  • Keoma Borges

Everything that I expect from a great and real-life pet store I find in Upmarket. Large range of products and options. The only place I can find the favourite treats for Binky. We can even pet their own parrots. Highly recommend.

  • Aaron Jenkin

I recently visited this aquarium and bought a few fish. They had a huge number of fish across wide range of species and all in very good condition. Although very heavily stocked, they have high water turnover and all

Leaving a 1 star review due to price. 166 for a bag of royal canin. The tag said 145 and i got to the counter and it said 166. Checked online and other retailers selling the same bag for 120. Very greedy.

  • Sanji Nara

Really awesome place. I am a first time fish shopper. Philip over there was a really passionate about his work. He helped us choose our fish and the accessories we need. We had a great time.

  • Brianna Robinson

Went a 6 months ago to get 2 Fish. If you care about the safety and health of animals please don't go here. If you know a lot about fish, this place is disgusting, but I saw a lot of fish

  • Adele Parli

A great range of everything you could possibly need for your pets. Lovely helpful staff (especially Baz) and really fair pricing. Super convenient location too, right by Queen Vic Markets!

The parrot is so adorable. If you are lucky enough, you would hear he/she say "Hello" to you. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask for his/her name. Does any one know, please?

  • Thomas Liontis

Has a lot of pet related bedding and food but more so for dogs and birds, they don't have many other things for other pets.

  • Henry Chiew

Poor customer service and overpriced items. I could find the exact same item for half the price at another local store.

  • Michael Pace

We bought a lovely cocker spaniel x golden retriever from upmarket pets and she has been an absolute gem in our lives.
